I am keen to build an intranet site for our secondary school, we have no money to spend on expert help so I have to go it alone. I envisage the site being a sharing site for staff and students, news, canteen menu, gallery for photos and videos etc, and a secure area for staff only, containing forms, room bookings and so on. I have toyed with a Joomla site with some success but my stumbling block is the secure area that requires an LDAP lookup, I have spent hours configuring SHMANIC jmapmyldap, only to find it too flaky for words. As soon as I thought I had it configured correctly one minor change threw it off track, now I've lost faith in it. I am wondering if someone can point me in the right direction, I am not entirely sold on Joomla, I'm quite happy to learn a new system if necessary. Many thanks

Just a general query for those schools which have an intranet. What software do you use, and what's the most useful thing you've accomplished with it?

Good morning, We have an intranet built on the older version of iis, looking to redo this preferably with something a bit more techy/user friendly - what do you fine people use in your schools? Free is best as we only need something VERY basic, first page is student how-tos and guides, staff page is accessible via AD account - links to sites, docs, IT & Site team ticketing system Kind regards, Adam

Hi all, I would like to set up an intranet for our school at the moment we host our (internal) sites on Godaddy but this is to be taken away from me.... long story. OK I have set up a Windows Server 2012R2 Called it Intranet given it a Static IP and Installed xampp. I have set it all up and when i type localhost I see my website, I have set up a virtual host and also set it to intranet, set up the server ip and intranet in the hosts file but the page will not load. Local Server Fine, PC on network it just times out, can ping Intranet server by name and IP. RM had a great how to many moons agao and its a long time since I set a webserver up. Anyhelp would be great.

Hello, We've just received our annual renewal from our suppliers who support our moodle vle, and at just under £3000 I started to wonder if we're getting value for money. I know that only a few of our faculties use the VLE in "anger" and the majority of users just use it as a thoroughfare to get to other apps / links. Students mostly use it to access their files. I was just wondering how many schools (we're a secondary) still use a VLE and if you have ditched it what do you use for an intranet etc... Thanks in advance D

We require for this key role in the school, an inspirational and creative individual to manage our website as well as develop our school intranet and learning platform. Experience of designing/maintaining a website is essential, as are good communication skills. Good working knowledge of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash. Experience of working within an education environment, and a design or media-based further education qualification are both desirable. For application form and details please visit our website Helenswood School Helenswood School, The Ridge, St Leonards on Sea, East Sussex, TN37 7PS. I'm sorry to have to ask this but... I'm trying to set up an internal (eventually external too) helpdesk. I've set up Liberum Helpdesk on a machine I've built with Server 2003. I've got it all running fine on a virtual website on the IIS of this server. All I want to do is to be able to either... Link this into our network so I can just put a link into our users' start menu...and eventually (This is the and/or bit), integrate it with our school website. I would like to keep this running on this server due to space issues and also to keep it seperate. I've given it an IP address, but this is where my knowledge fails me drastically because I recieve the error 'Name Error: The domain name does not exist. 'when I try and access the IP address. Can I link this to our web server so that it can redirect users to the helpdesk? And if not how can I just make this server accessible as a link in our program sets so they can log into the helpdesk? Sorry I know it's a beginner question... Thanks for reading this anyway and thank you in anticipation of any help offered!! Laura

Is anyone out there mirroring there online moodle website with an intranet server? I am just embarking on the process and wondered if anyone had a similar experience. I have a lamp server running on Vmware ESXi and I'm ready to go. My school is part of a managed service so all I am waiting for is an ip address for my 'unmanaged server' to make it accessible to the lan. My plan is to do a nightly sync of the moodle data directory and database. We find our VLE nearly unworkable when trying to run over the net at busy time so hopefully this will provide a sort of offline version. It occurred to me that most vle courses don't change and the 5Mb/s downloads I am getting on the lan may make the pleasant a whole lot easier. Anyway let me know if anyone else is doing the same.

Hi everyone, Just a quick question regarding how you use your internal intranet sites. I am in the process of making a nice shiny new one, but what I want to know if how many you have. Do you have a separate intranet site for students and teacher, or do they all get pushed to the same site when they open a browser? The reason I ask is because I'm not keen on having 2 separate sites to maintain, but I can see the advantage of being able to pick and choose what I target to either audience. What do you guys think? Regards, Sven.

Hello, Does anyone know of a good internal website which would sit within our intranet (or not) and would be the default page for the whole school (admin and curriculum). This page could have links, weather, and a message board, which could only be updated by the heads of site and senior teachers. Any ideas? Thank you.

I've noticed that quite a few resources in our shared areas are duplicated, i'd like to provide the ability for staff to search our shared areas to see if content exists before adding duplicated resources. Anyone using or concidering using this or do you already have an alternative running? http://www.microsoft.com/enterprisesearch/serverproducts/searchserverexpress/default.aspx

We have Spiceworks set up internally and awaiting SLT approval but I've run into a problem with the shortcut on Windows 7 which is preventing us releasing it to the staff. -All of our accounts can access the portal by hostname on XP but only some can access it on Windows 7. -All accounts can access it by IP address, but that doesn't seem to work with SSO so isn't an option. -Local admin account can access it. -Domain admin can access it. -One entry in DNS to the correct IP address. -Editing the hosts file doesn't make a difference It works fine using our Pre-Prep login but not using the student login. I did a GP report and checked all options applied by the Pre-Prep GPO but nothing seems applicable. The other difference between these accounts is that the student account loads a mandatory profile from the server whereas the Pre-Prep account loads the local default one and settings are applied by the GPO. The domain admin account also uses the local default profile. Is there something I need to change to get Windows 7 mandatory profiles to be able to resolve intranet names?

I am using Moodle locally hosted on Intranet Students can access it without any problem. Its a normal server with one NIC. We have a setup of Local Active Directory, DNS & DHCP etc. Currently the setup is that the IP address of the Moodle is mapped with ISP and LAN users are accessing it via that external IP address. It means that even local users on LAN use the External IP address to access it, which is a bit slow. I read a lot on forums and everyone is suggesting to forward local machines via DNS to point at the external address. How can i do it? I want to have the settings of external IP address in Moodle Config file meanwhile i want the intranet users to access the server on LAN with excellent speed. Can anyone tell me in steps how to do it via DNS? thanks

Those of you who have not yet seen Firefly 6 should look here for some screenshots from the 3 themes, Themes - Firefly Help There is a huge change coming to Navigation with all our Sections being rolled up under a single resources button to make room for other functions such as Markbook and Tasks. An extra two mouse clicks / taps are required to access anything. As a Head of ICT who has managed Firefly in my school for several years I feel this is a backward step and I think my users will be up in arms. I would prefer the menu to stay as it is , or to be more customisable like Wordpress. I believe we are losing some of the flexibility that brought us to Firefly in the first place. Please have a look at the screenshot and if you too are unhappy, contact Firefly asap as the final release is 5 months away and it may be possible to persuade them to make changes.

Can any one suggest any nifty things I can use to demonstrate Sharepoint frees greate features. Set it up with the thought of moving our internal intranet over, created a site & some sub sites but I'm having a bit of a block of what to do with it to show it's full potential. It's all looking very meh, not much more than we do at the moment with our current set up. Or to put it another way, what cool things do you do with yours?
