Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone can help, we currently have a mix of Windows 7 computers and some new Surface 3s running Windows 10. For the last few years we have used mandatory profiles on windows 7 which has worked well. However with the new Surfaces running Windows 10 I have created a new .v5 profile which works however the default apps such camera don't seem to work. Has anyone got them working or knows of a way to get them working. Let me know if you need anymore information? Kind Regards

In Focus -> Profiles -> Session Manager We currently have an active report running. I've realized the Reporting Period has been set from September until June. This has caused dropped subjects to appear on students reports. Will changing the reporting period have any affect on the data already entered into the report? (For example would changing the reporting period from September to June to May to June, delete/remove any data staff have already entered?)

Hi all, We are using roaming profiles on windows 7 and are seeing more and more issues with student profiles. Students will work for a whole lesson and when it comes to saving they are sometimes prompted with a message "Word cannot open or save this file because the path name is too long", however the path they are saving is on the root of their documents.. We have been working around this by copying and pasting the work remotely and saving it for them in their areas, then doing a local and server profile reset which will fix the issue for the student. I have attached an image below of an example. We have around 860 students and this is happening approx 2 times a day, sometimes with the message "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable". We've noticed that this one happens regularly if students or staff move computers each time they login, and it created a separate local profile in the format username.domain. If anyone that has experienced the same issues could comment that would be great.

hi this is just a quick publish on a problem we came up against and solved, incase anyone has the same issue. From windows 7 Microsoft have some bizar method of naming for users documents when storing on a file server. It creates a file called desktop.ini in the users documents and from the moment this is done, their folder will only show as "Documents". Not by the name you define in AD. To combat this we discussed with some other local schools and they had set a script to delete all desktop.ini files on the file server, and schedule it so any new users it will catch and correct. Jump forward 5 years to Windows 10. We are now looking at changing our profile system. We realised that after a period of time the users login became slow. Not directly after it had been created but shortly after. We tested taking the users directory to another server, this worked. we took the directory to the c drive of the file server and that worked. We rebuilt the server and re added the user documents drive and that worked fine. We thought we'd fixed it. We thought it may be a formatting issue or an access issue. Then all of a sudden it started again. So we back tracked everything we had done to the new server to get it up and running. Volume shadow copy, permissions, and desktop.ini removal script. So we added a new drive, and applied each of the above in turn, until we found out it was the desktop.ini removal script. A users profile will struggle to build if it fails to see the desktop.ini file. Thus causing a 2 minuet addition to our logon times. I post this because so many of our local schools copied each others method for windows 7 profiling and may encounter this issue. Simple fix allow the desktop.ini file and if you need to find a users folder, change your field names at the top of explorer to show "filename". This shows the true folder name.

Hello, I've been encountering a slowly growing issue of Internet Explorer 10 not picking up our GPO settings for proxy settings etc... any insights as to why and any tips to sort it out?

Hi, I have windows 7 setup to use mandatory profiles for students which run off a network share. It works OK but isn't as easy to manage as xp was e.g. I have installed Photoshop elements and premiere elements and want the acceptance agreement that shows each time a user uses it to go away. In xp I would set the load the program and setup the desktop as wanted then copy the profile to the share and make it mandatory. I can't do this in 7 because the copy button is now disabled. I tried making a profile using sysprep but ended up breaking a machine trying. I fixed a similar problem with office using a showoptin key. Does anyone know the regkey for pse and pre that stop the acceptance agreement? Or is there a better way to achieve what I'm after? Thanks

Hi All, We have just installed a new managed wireless network on site. We used to have Ranger installed on the laptops which had to be taken off as Ranger Network was not designed for wireless networks. My question is how do i lock down the student areas similar to Ranger, will the new settigns conflict with the existing Ranger GPO settings? Are there other tools i could use in parallel with Ranger that can be installed on laptops only? We are running a Windows 2003 environment with XP clients. Regards A

Hi, For some WEIRD reason I've been having issues with our user profiles (Windows 2003) in that I have duplicate folder names (e.g. swilson, swilson, swilson) but when i open one of them it will be the profile for a different user in the address bar!! If I change the folder name to that user- it duplicates the name and replaces the folder name of some others almost randomly... what's happening? I thought it was a corrupt profile at first but it looks like something else may be happening. Any ideas? It's driving me nuts.

There comes a time where roaming profiles need to be backed up, however, Windows 7 and Server 2008R2 does not allow you to access the roaming profile folder unless the user has specifically given access. Here is a quick logon script I wrote to deal with this issue. Hi All, This is causing so much pain one of our customers has windows server 2008r2 acting as 3 citrix servers however we are getting an awful lot of temporary profiles even after removing the security identifiers they seem to eventually reoccur. All users log in with roaming profiles. Any ideas? regards Josh

Hi, I am having a problem with a pair of our servers both are 2008 R2 SP1 , the are used by student to run programming software through the RDP system and RD Web, they are set to pick up mandatory profiles from another one of our DC servers. Which works they get the profile the issue is that they never update. E.G. I made a change to the profile to include links to a new program set so I changed and updated the location of the mandatory profile. If a new user logs on they get the full program set if a users who has been through the process before opens the program set they only see there existing options, they can load the software if you direct them through the drive to it so the issue seems to be caching of the mandatory profile. Now on a work station normally at this point I would go to the C:/ and clear out all the store users information. But as these are running on the server and this it now critical to the curriculum , I really don't want to do this. Without being sure that it will resolve the issue not make it worse. Any suggestion? Your help would be much appreciated.

Hi guys, I've got a fault in a school that I've posted over on serverfault but not getting very far: Terminal server logs off users after 5 minutes - Server Fault Perhaps some of you have come across the problem already. The basics are that we have mixed 2003 and 2008 terminal servers. The 2003 servers are fine, but 2008 always kick off users after 5 minutes. We have removed mandatory profiles in case the v2 profiles were at the root of it, but also it gave quicker logons. I originally thought that this happened for staff only, but we've since found a domain admin with the same problem. Here is how the sessions look while a staff member is logging on: No "errors" as such, just information that the user is being logged off. No event log events created on the host at all. Anyone here had a similar problem? Thanks

Hi all just hoping for some help/advice again if possible. We have deployed UE-V correctly I hope.... but we're not sure how to get UE-V to save the outlook profile, I've enabled the gpo to capture settings for outlook 2016 but it doesn't seem to be doing it. Is there something that needs setting in the office gpo separately from the UE-V applications gpo ? We are running a hybrid network with mirrage & VDI both using a mandatory profile, any help would be appreciated. Cheers

So... I know this has been covered in numerous threads of different natures and I have read loads about profiles in Windows 10, but I cannot find a decent way of sorting for my school environment. Currently; Win 7 Students are mandatory Most Staff are Roaming some sedentary users are local profiles Everyone has redirected folders to home drives. Requirements; Win 10 1809 EDu Reliable login experience with own customisations As fast login times as possible Minimal files left on desktops (if possible) I have ruled out mandatory for Win 10 as I read this is not supported or recommended by many. Roaming profiles are an option for staff, but I fear that profile storage size will mean slow login times for them... Which brings me on to my recent trials of UE-V. I am trying UE-V with local profiles but keep hitting walls. If I login to one machine and make changes to the taskbar (as Microsoft Documentation states to do) I can login to another machine and the change stays.... Great....But if the local profile is deleted from one machine the whole thing becomes unsynced and a complete mess. Local copies of profiles are going to fill my desktops very quickly unless I clear them out, hence this test. What is the answer? Just local profiles with re-directed everything to a home drive? I am getting rather frustrated with Win10 and would welcome any advice. I need to get this ready for this Summer... time is ticking! Thanks in advance.

Hi Edugeek's, We have a bunch of workstations currently running Windows XP Pro, with our server running Server 2008. The students and staff use mandatory profiles with "My Documents" redirected to their home drive with only a couple of users in school office using roaming profiles. We are looking to move to Windows 7 or maybe newer but will need to replace a chunk of the machines to run the newer OS so would like to stagger the update as the budget doesn't allow us to go out and replace the old machines. My question is, how do you deal with profiles with Windows XP and Windows 7 running along side each other? I understand that if you have roaming profiles enabled with XP, it will create a Windows 7 profiles using the appended V2 and there are no real problems. But can you have mandatory profiles running concurrently to cover both OS's? If not, any suggestions on a good course of action to take to help migrate?

Windows 7 Client Server 2008 R2 It was hard to come up with a title for the thread as i have went around in circles for 2 days now. Student user has a basic mandatory profile. Log it on, on a fresh image. Every GPO is working fine. Internet, all fine and loads everything fine. Log off. Log back on again and HTTPS sites stop working. Everything looks fine in Internet Options. SSL 3.0 enabled. This continues until i delete the local copy of the profile. This is IE9 and Chrome. Chrome using system settings. FF works and also using system settings. Time server is fine as it works for admin and the student when it first logs on. I've taken machines and users out of usual OU and put it in an OU with only the Default Domain Policy where it only gets the proxy details (which is where i'm having another problem, but one thing at a time). Any thoughts at all? Driving me crazy and taking far too long. Cheers Stu

Hi, I am working at a school and over the holidays we have upgraded our network from 2003/xp to a 2008R2/Win7 network. Most things are working as they should but we seem to be getting a few odd issues popping up. Just wondering if anyone has any idea on the following? When students log in to the network a few of them randomly seem to be missing the documents folder and are unable access any documents/folders. The odd thing is some of them are able to access the documents, but are missing random files and folders (the files/folders show up on the server) or the folder is greyed out and has a cross through it and some of them are unable to access the documents what so ever, coming up with the error that the location could not be found. This is only happening to students and not staff. Student accounts and staff accounts both use different profile types and group policies. Staff users have a roaming profile whereas students have a mandatory profile with roaming appData. If anyone has any ideas or information about what could be happening any help would be much appriciated! Joe
