Hi The people who knew sharepoint left years ago, since then we have been adding the odd link, changing room bookings etc. But have all been too scared to do much in case we break it as we do NOT have the knowledge required to fix it. To be honest it is not widely used but there is some key information still there that needs to stay and requires updating. So it has to stay in some form or other. I want to upgrade the OS (from 2003 to either 2012), virtualise the server, and feel more comfortable about how it is put together. The first stage is to remove old data - we really do not need to know who had booked room 5, in period 2, on the 22nd Jan 2008! The most urgent question is what is the file called EXTRANET? Why is it 160GB - yup GB? How do I shrink it? Is Extranet the external access to the website as this is now only available internally? What would happen if I rename it? If it all goes horribly wrong can I just rename it back and it will fix itself? Why was it last updated on the 23rd March, when I spent most of yesterday (27th March) removing old photos and room bookings? Is there something like WinDirStat I can use on a website to find out what is taking up all the space? Is the fact that this file is in a directory called 'Farm Backups' mean it is a backup and can be deleted? Thank you for any help and please can any replies understand that I know nothing about Sharepoint. Debbie

Hello, I have a weird problem with our SQL 2008 server that hosts SIMS (it was SQL 2005 before, but we migrated it to try and solve this problem, it didn't) We had Capita remote-in to install hosted SIMS Learning Gateway. They ran a tool to create a new user in SIMS to allow ADP to work. However, after creating it, we couldn't login. We went into SQL Management Studio to try and change the password, but when we tried to get into the properties for the newly created account we got this message: Cannot show requested dialog. (SqlMgmt) Property IsLocked is not available for Login '[CGSadp.client]'. This property may not exist for this object, or may not be retrievable due to insufficient access rights. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) This was connecting logged on as administrator with a trusted connection. If we tried to login as sa, we got this: Login failed for user 'sa'. (Microsoft SQL Error: 18456) If we tried to go into properties for sa, it gave the same message as above. Thanks, David

I've been having a specific problem on Windows 7 clients on our Server 2003 evironment. We have been testing Windows 7, and building a profile to work with it (all of our clients are on XP...but new systems will come with Windows 7). The profiles are all working, except when it comes to printers. We have a vbs script which runs on logon, checks where the user is logged on, and assigns (and defaults) the correct printer for that room. It also deletes printers on log off. On Windows XP, this work flawlessly. However, coming to Windows 7 we encounter massive delays on logon times, caused by this: "Do you trust this printer? Windows needs to download and install a software driver from the \\%servername% computer to print from %printername%. Proceed only if you trust the \\%servername% computer and the network." The vbs scripts run sliently in the background, so the user cannot see this message to click Install driver, so it waits for it to time out and default to Cancel, and then it doesn't install the printer. I have been researching this for a couple of days now, and I can't figure it out. I have tried using group policy for "Point and Print", allowing it in the forest and/or specified trusted servers, but that didn't work. Also tried using another Windows 7 machine to use GPO Management to disable warning messages, and that didn't work either. The messages still appear. Any ideas?

Hi I have been trying to disable authentication on a share we have with little success. If you browse using a windows xp client (on domain but local user account) you get the auth prompt. The server hosting the share has "everyone" as permissions for the share and ntfs. The server is 2003 sp2 and I have tried turing the various local policies to allow anonymous access but it still prompts. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi all, Not sure if this is the best section for this but here goes. I'm having an odd issue with windows 7 client computers applying GPO's in the school I work at. When users first log on the user GPO isn't always applied, if the user logs out and in again the policy is applied. This only happens on my Windows 7 Machines. Background: Server = 2003 Standard 32 Affected Clients = Windows 7 Pro 32 GPO's are set up with separate computer and User GPO (different GPO for Pupil and Staff). Other GPO's apply items such as printer settings software and some scripts. Additional - my logon scripts contains the GPUPDATE command which may help the second logon. Any Ideas?? Thanks

Currently using Windows Server 2003, with a VBScript to add icons to my desktop for multiple users on the same PC. My script will make the icons appear with each user login but I am having an issue with the physical location of the icon. Is there anyway to automatically have each icon appear at a desired location? PC is 64-bit Windows 7 Pro.

Hi I work in a school and we have two networks curriculum domain and the admin domain. Untill today i've been able to just add the admin users to curriculum folder permission to allow them access. I've come back from holiday and admin staff no longer have access. I checked the sharing a security and instead of it saying "admin 13" it just has unknown account followed by the SID, I am however able to remote into the curriculum server from an admin machine. Is this an easy one to sort out? The curriculum server is running 2003 and the admin is running 2008 if that would make any difference. Any help would be great

Hi all, This is my first post but it's confusing the hell out of me, so here goes. We have just installed a new server as the old one is, well, old, and have set up the new server as primary domain, dhcp and dns server. Our clients are either windows 2000 or XP. Everything is ok with the XP machine, they are now looking to the new server for group policy. The problem is with the 2000 machines, they are just not picking up the group policy so apart from students having full access to machines the main issue is the desktops which are now stored under \\newserver\desktop$ for some reason some of the 2000 machines are still pointing to \\oldserver\desktop$. Now here's the strange thing, sometimes is will point to the new location and sometimes it points to the old location, it seems to be very intermittent. I have checked the DNS all seems fine, active directory replication all seems fine. I have flushed DNS and the machines, deleted the local profiles. Sometimes simply restarting the computer works, but then later on in the day when a student / teacher logs on it loses all the permissions again. Sorry for the long and probebly senseless post but any help would be trully aprretiated, Thanks, Dan P.S. if anyone needs more information, just ask, thanks. Also the servers are Server 2003.

Hello All, Very weird one. I have a Terminal Server that is also a print server causing some major issues. It has happened three times now but at totally random times. It is running 2003. When the issue occurs all users can not logon it looks like their profiles are loading but just taking ages e.g. 30mins! I have by process of elimination and server \ infrastructure checks been able to narrow it down to our print \ TS server. Upon a restart or disconnection of this server all goes back to normal. I see no alerts in event logs and traffic levels appear normal at the times that it occurs. There are some map printer scripts that rely on the server at logon and this is the only thing that I have thought of linking the problem as you see only minor delays if you are already logged on. Before it was narrowed down to the TS\Print server it looked like a broadcast storm. Nothing in the event logs looks untoward. memory leak maybe??? I hope that this is understandable. I am going to do some hardware checks on the server next... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

HI all, I've recently got a new server to replace our aging domain controller and I've been going through the process detailed here: Step By Step Guide for Migrating Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003 Server | Windows Reference So far I've done 3 of the 4 steps: New server is on the domain and holds all 5 FSMO roles plus the GC role, I've migrated all shares and transferred and authorised DHCP. Did all the checks with DCDIAG's, all fine. Before demoting the old (Server 2000) server I thought I'd see if a client could log on with the old server removed from the network (took the network cable out of the server). The client connected to the domain but was ssssllllooooooowwww, around 8-10 mins to log on. I researched the problem and found that the clients have the old server's IP address as the DNS server If I demote the old server to a member server and remove it from the domain, give the new server the same name and IP address as the old server as described here (Disconnect the old server (win server 2000),Raise the domain level functionality to native Windows 2003,Rename your new windows server 2003(Part4) | Windows Reference) Will this cure my really slow logons? Sorry it's a long post, any help/guidance is gratefully received!

Hi all, Im trying to get psexec to remotely run simsbac.bat on one of our servers. I'm trying: psexec \\servername simsbac.bat and im getting: simsbac.bat exited on servername with error code 1. I have tried the same code but connecting to another workstation which works fine, it's just when connecting to the server. The same error occurs with any command including cmd. The firewall is off and I am using full admin rights to both the workstation and the server. Also running simsbac.bat on the server localy works fine so it't not the .bat file. Any thoughts any one? Cheers, Dan

Hello All, Is there any reason anyone knows of that would stop net share > c:\shares.txt creating the txt file? All I want to see is our shares...I'm on an RM CC3 network, running Server 2003 - does anyone have a workaround, fix, or alternative for viewing shares? Thanks, Laura

Hi All, I'm looking into our school's password policy and I want to set AD policies for staff and some KS2 classes so that their password expires / must be a certain length etc. A bit of research has told me that Windows Server 2000 / 2003 only allows 1 password policy, defined in the default domain policy. I can't use it as I don't think our KS1 pupils will cope with changing their PW every 30 days, it not being the same as the last 10 and being complex Does anyone know any good third party tools for multiple password policies, I've had a look at the Specops solution but I think it might be a tad expensive.

Hi Guys, Well, I'm really looking for a piece of best practice more than anything and I think I have an idea about how I'm gonna tackle this one, but thought I'd float it on here and make sure I'm not missing anything. Most computers in the primary school where I work are members of a domain (Server 2003 & XP Clients) however there are a few computers that buck this trend and are not members of the domain. I want to clean up the school and make all classroom PCs members of the domain. One of the problems that I foresee is that teachers are already actively using a profile either locally or using network administrator access. This is something that I've allowed to go on for too long now and we're tightening the belt. Ideally I'd like each teacher to be using their own login (which they have been setup) instead of administrator. The problem is they now have documents/settings on the local/network administrator profile that I'd like to 'seemlesly' transport to their own profile. What's the best way to do this? Stephen

Hi all, I am setting up a lab with windows7 machines and I want to add a little protection to certain folders/files. I have Centurion to restore the machines back to pristine state once they are restarted which is great. What I want to do is install a link to the server for a testing package the students will use with teacher directions. No AD, no Samba in place, each machine is on their own. I want to use both NWEA MAP and ExamView Test Player which require a link to the app on the server and a login to use. Now my issue that these folders need to have write access to save the text score data. Once kids figure they can right click and find the server path they could potentially start messing up files on the server. Does anyone have a way to prevent right click, or protect certain desktop icons/folders? It just dawned on me that the best solution may be to create another user on the machine that is only available for testing. Then when a teacher wants to use those programs we will log into those accounts only (which will be passwd prot and hidden from login screen). Is this the best practice? Thanks for the feedback on this, most appreciated.

Hi everyone, This is my first time setting up an AD network and ive been having some problems. Ive got a HP proliant tower server running server 03, 5 windows 7 pro workstations connected to a switch into the server. Ive configured the domain and dns server, added the users and computers to the AD but when I try and login to the domain from one of the & workstations I am getting the message "The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship" I have googled with little avail just wondering if anybody knows where the source of the problem is. Im quite a noob when it comes to networking so please bear that in mind, would really appreciate some help on this one.

Hi all, Our SIMS server is running on a virtual server - Server 2003 standard R2 x86. (It was converted from a physical server). I have given it all the resources the OS supports i.e 4 cpu cores and 4Gb RAM. We currently have a problem where CPU usage hits 100% on all cores and causes speed issues with SIMS because it's busy, especially around the time of year they do profiles and assman. I can confirm that the activity is caused by SQL(SIMS) and not anything untoward. I want to improve performance of the SIMS server. The virtual host has lots of spare resources (While the virtual SIMS server sits at 100% on all virtual cores only 5% real cpu is used on the host.) Ideally I would like to create a new 2008 R2 server image and migrate SIMS over but I had a look and there are loads of SIMS integrated software that make this a bit tricky. So.. I know I can't upgrade 2003 x86 to 2008 R2 x64, but can I upgrade to x86 2003 enterprise to allow the use of more RAM and CPU cores? If I do will I have to repair SQL 2008\SIMS etc or should it all just work? Thanks,

So here is the situation: I run a smallish school network (~75 computers, ~150 users) and I have come across a very strange problem. When the internet connection is lost (due to any number of reasons from crappy service from the ISP to cleaning ladies knocking a cord loose) my domain logons take an extraordinary amount of time (5-10min) to complete. This *only* happens when the internet is off. As long as the internet connection is good, logons are processed in a matter of seconds. The setup: 2 x Windows 2003 R2 x64 Domain Controllers both running DNS 1 x Windows ISA 2006 running DHCP Clients all run Windows XP SP3 Pro. About half the users have mandatory profiles with redirection and half use regular roaming profiles. Both types are affected by this problem. Until recently I was using only one DC that provided both DNS and DHCP services and a firewall (PfSense) out front. Same problems then. My DNS servers are set to forward to the google DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) because after much testing, I get much snappier results then by going with my ISP's DNS servers. That being said, I have the same problem when using my ISP's DNS servers. Ok, I am sure I left out some important details that some nice chap will point out for me, but I am hoping someone with a big brain will be able to tell me what stupid mistake I have made here cause this has been bugging me for almost a year now! Cheers!

If I don't solve this in the next week I'm giving up. And I can't give up because I've wasted far too much time on this learning curve already. Ok so I've set up my helpdesk. I think this is server related - or how I've got my IIS set up. Or maybe neither. When I try and access the default website by the ip address of the server it's on, I get a windows logon box. And can't get access to the website unless I put in administrator etc. This is me being ignorant about server setups, but is this a simple thing that anyone can see as to where I'm going wrong - something you have to do on networks? Or is it something I need to trawl over liberum's support again? I don't think it's liberum though, as the helpdesk it working ok as an admin, it's just accessing the actual website. I think. Should I just go back to teaching windsurfing??
-
I'm sorry to have to ask this but... I'm trying to set up an internal (eventually external too) helpdesk. I've set up Liberum Helpdesk on a machine I've built with Server 2003. I've got it all running fine on a virtual website on the IIS of this server. All I want to do is to be able to either... Link this into our network so I can just put a link into our users' start menu...and eventually (This is the and/or bit), integrate it with our school website. I would like to keep this running on this server due to space issues and also to keep it seperate. I've given it an IP address, but this is where my knowledge fails me drastically because I recieve the error 'Name Error: The domain name does not exist. 'when I try and access the IP address. Can I link this to our web server so that it can redirect users to the helpdesk? And if not how can I just make this server accessible as a link in our program sets so they can log into the helpdesk? Sorry I know it's a beginner question... Thanks for reading this anyway and thank you in anticipation of any help offered!! Laura
