Can I disable right click on certain icons? Won't the users just be able to go into the folders and find what they are looking for? I think a separate account is the best bet.

Hi all, I am setting up a lab with windows7 machines and I want to add a little protection to certain folders/files. I have Centurion to restore the machines back to pristine state once they are restarted which is great. What I want to do is install a link to the server for a testing package the students will use with teacher directions. No AD, no Samba in place, each machine is on their own. I want to use both NWEA MAP and ExamView Test Player which require a link to the app on the server and a login to use. Now my issue that these folders need to have write access to save the text score data. Once kids figure they can right click and find the server path they could potentially start messing up files on the server. Does anyone have a way to prevent right click, or protect certain desktop icons/folders? It just dawned on me that the best solution may be to create another user on the machine that is only available for testing. Then when a teacher wants to use those programs we will log into those accounts only (which will be passwd prot and hidden from login screen). Is this the best practice? Thanks for the recommendation. I know of Aruba and I wish I could convince those with the money to see it your way (mine too!). Why do these companies never put prices of hardware on their websites (or am I just missing it)? Hard to make a choice when I need to email the companies every time to ask.

Interesting as I just contacted Aerohive and the local Korean partner put 10APs plus ethernet switches and a controller at more than $20,000. I know of Ruckus and can I just get 1 or 2 APs on their own? This is where I need to start before the school will throw down more cash.

I have Apps at my school and (almost) everything works great. Easy to set up and to manage groups of users (new functionality this year). I recommend it highly for simplicity's sake. I have 50 users and for free it's great along with a decent support base in the forums. I say 'almost' because after I installed Postini it continues to block a lot of list serve mail I receive but gives me a nice 'Quarantine summary' daily to users so they can get their messages delivered. Also the footer on outbound messages doesn't play nice with IE (any version) as the text refused to line break when viewed in IE...safari, firefox and chrome are fine.

Thanks Synack, good to know that it doesn't take much space. Showing my inexperience here but when you push out these images are you pushing to an already partitioned drive? This will be the first time for me doing this so should I be pushing these out to a pre-formatted drive or an unformatted one?

FOG is exactly what I was going to set up tomorrow morning. Laptops aside I still have 75 other machines to manage. My idea is to install win7 on the laptop, get it configured the way I like, run sysprep and then use FOG to catch an image of it. Do the same with the other machines in the school. Never tried it before but looks totally doable with plenty of tutorials out there. Once I have done that I can send that win7 partition to all the other laptops I hope. I know win7 has the boot partition in front of it and I am a bit worried about that but it seems like FOG is ready to deal with that issue. See - Select "multiple partition image" instead of "single." - Windows 7 Image When I do the multiple partitions I guess I will then have to then go in and format the unformatted space to the DATA partition. I would like to save all 3 partitions but I don't have a hard drive with enough space for the image (I am wildly guessing that it will require a little less than 250G...if it doesn't that would be great - how much space will this image take up?).

Thanks for the responses. I was thinking of the C/D split because that's what I do with my own machines. Countless windows fails and my data is still safe on the D: (fingers crossed for no hardware fail). Even on my linux boxes I partition...just seems to make sense to me. Maybe the E for recovery is not useful. I am just thinking of restoring machines that are not on the network (ie a teacher takes the laptop home for Christmas break and windows bombs). I will create the windows image and was thinking of just restoring the partition if necessary from the network if needed, keeping the data intact. What if I lock down areas of the drive what happens if windows fails? I have seen DeepFreeze in action but not worked with it. I have never worked with Centurion before either so I don't know what options I can expect and capabilities I will have. By efficient imaging system what do you use and/or recommend? J

Hi all, my admin just bought ~20 new laptops for teachers and they arrived today. The company has already installed win7 on them and they apparently had 0 foresight as they left the drives as a single partition (other than the one win7 makes itself). I want to repartition the 230g hd's to C: 65gigs D: 110 gigs E: 65gigs C = windows D = data E = recovery image (thinking DriveXML to make it because it's free but open to suggestions...CloneZilla maybe). Does this make sense to you? I am not sure about the necessary size for E so I matched C but is this the right thing to do? I will then install Centurion on the comps to freeze C and E which will help in recovery. Never having done this before I am interested in the general opinion of my setup and suggestions as to what works. Any and all input appreciated.

We aren't on a domain because I don't have the expertise to set one up or the time to manage it. Plus our server is in Korean. So hopefully they will hire someone and we can get it done. I've emailed Ruckus and am waiting for a reply. There are no prices on their website so it's hard to know what I can get for the money I may get (now raised to $1000 give or take a few hundred).

OK sorry I wasn't sure of the major differences between the terms AP and router. I see what you mean now but since we have no AD/Samba going on I would like to have some level of control over certain rooms (like allowing student access at certain times of the day). I have explored Ruckus last year and almost got it but I will try again. How much as I looking at budget wise for a solution that can do what I want? If I was to buy an AP for a single room that can handle 25 people which physical AP do you recommend?

Right, well that depends on the cost. I agree but I don't control the money flow so while I will push that I can't guarantee it. I looked up AeroHive and sent them an inquiry. In the meantime I guess what I am looking for are reliable routers that can handle 25 connections at one time. Any suggestions?

Hi all, the headmaster at the school went out and bought 20 laptops for the teachers at the school. Now today he told me they arrived and I pointed out the lack of a wireless solution within the school. We have a few 54Gs around but they are sporadically placed and don't cover what we want to cover. I got the green light to buy some more APs and I was looking for recommendations. The wireless network is unmanaged (no domain) so they are all stand alone. A staff meeting will have 25 laptops so it would need to handle that kind of volume. Can anyone recommend a brand to buy to cover the school? Jason
