So I kinda have it working, but not 100%. I can get it to deploy and install, but the end user can go into the configuration and close down the server without prompting for a password. I am installing the latest msi version via gpo and am using the registry area of gpo to set the right keys. I tried to push it down via batch file with the msi switches but was having no luck, that's why I went this route. At least it's installing this way...just not configured properly. One thing that seemed odd, is that I could only find registry keys under HKLM/Software/TightVNC. I read somewhere else about stuff being under the Wow6432Node but there's nothing there. I also read there should be an ORL key, but I can't find that either. Any suggestions/ideas? EDIT: Nevermind, not sure what was going on, but I had it install on another computer and it worked fine. I think this was was wonky because it was the one I've been messing with.

Hi, I've just begun working at a school that has purchased a class set of iPads, some of the Ed tools they'd like to use are on Flash websites, these websites work OK with Puffinbrowser (at home) but Puffinbrowser doesn't work through the LEA's firewall & web-filtering and the LEA don't look like doing anything about it. My idea is to put something like a VNC app on the iPad which opens a session on a Linux box where they can view the flash websites. Ideally the app would open a session and auto open firefox and not let them view anything else, has anyone tried anything like this? I'm also assuming the Linux box would need to be quite high spec if 15+ pupils are going to open a session simultaneously? Many thanks

Hi, I just started experimenting with Skeep VNC console. It seems to work pretty well for our AD computers. I am trying to deploy it with MS logon II enabled for security. The problem is that when I configure it on the console and then deploy, the ACL settings are not transferring to the client. It installs and starts the service but there is nothing under the "Configure MS logon groups" and it won't connect. If I configure that manually at the client, it works. I only need one domain admin group for all the PCs in the OU. Is there a way I can set the ACL under group policy? Thanks for the help, Walt

Hi all, Can anyone recommend a free (VNC or other) remote dekstop client for a Mac (Yosemite). Need to remote into a Mac from a Windows machine over a LAN. Or tell me how to use the Mac built in one with Windows RDP. Cheers in advance

Script noob here, I've been trying to come up with a scrip which runs a batch file that uninstalls any vnc software and then installs ultravnc. I''d like to add the if/then statement similar to below which will look to see if TightVNC exists and if so will run the uninstall batch to remove, then if needed install the new UltraVNC through msi installer, otherwise it will just exit. I am going to add this into the computer startup script. I'm hoping somebody might be able to look at this and tell me if I'm even close. ------------ if exist "C:\Program Files\TightVNC\." goto Action1 if not exist "C:\ultravnc.txt" goto Action2 goto Action3 :Action1 \\server\VNCDeploy\removevnc.bat goto END :Action2 if exist %SystemRoot%\SysWOW64 goto 64-bit \\server\VNCDeploy\UltraVnc_10962_x86.msi echo "UltraVNC" > "c:\ultravnc.txt" goto END :64-bit \\server\VNCDeploy\UltraVnc_10962_x64.msi echo "UltraVNC" > "c"\ultravnc.txt" goto END :Action3 :END

I've seen a bunch of reports of ARD breaking after the latest 3.7 update. These problems are all about Mac ARD clients and the fix involves disabling the firewall on the target machine. Well, I'm not having that problem. I just installed ARD 3.7 and I can control a client Mac just fine. What I can't do is control a Windows or Ubuntu client from ARD 3.7. It lets me observe but not control. Needless to say, this worked fine as recently as yesterday. I can still control non-Mac clients using built-in VNC, but that's a pain. I'd rather have ARD working again! I tried deleting and re-creating one of the affected clients from my ARD list, but that didn't make a difference. Setting the 'encrypt passwords and keystrokes only' pref didn't help either. BTW, I'm on 10.8.5; Mac clients are a mix of 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. Nobody's running 10.9 yet. I have been tasked with researching/proposing a new solution that includes a help desk, asset management, and the ability to remote support (e.g. VNC) to users on site. We currently have none of these. I'm just looking to get a feel for what sort of solution others may be using (this is for an independent school), and get some feedback on what I'm currently looking at. Help desk For the help desk/ticketing component, I am currently considering: Spiceworks SysAid (On-premise) OSTicket Kayako (Download) Web Help Desk (SolarWinds). Spiceworks is probably my favourite pick right now, simply because it is so easy to use + customise/brand, and generally seems geared specifically for IT. Having a good experience for our end users is very important, and the fact that Spiceworks seems to supports Active Directory SSO for the user portal with very little fuss is great. Dragging and dropping to design the portal, and being able to create custom ticket forms + attributes/fields is also quite nice. As for e-mail queues, this seems to be quite robust as well, and taking a look at the E-mail templates/variables I think some very professional looking notifications could be created. I'm also quite fond of OSTicket, having used it in another project. I'm glad to see the newest versions are getting better. This could be customized to our hearts' content, considering it is open-source. I am a little concerned about the help desk aspects of SysAid and Web Help Desk; the whole category soup that users would click through to identify their problem seems designed to help route a much larger ticket volume than we would anticipating and would likely confuse our end users. One advantage SysAid has is that it integrates the ticketing, asset management, and the remote support into a single product. Kayako is certainly a solid solution for ticketing, although like SysAid and Web Help Desk, if you want to customise the look and feel it seems all you can do is download a pack of HTML + CSS and make your changes to that. Asset Management On the asset management side of things I'm looking at: Parago School Asset Manager Spiceworks SysAid Web Help Desk (SolarWinds). Kayako "Advanced Assets Module" The first two, Parago and School Asset Manager, are not really "IT Focused". These would certainly be very useful to the school as a whole, but probably aren't the best place to start since our project is IT specific, especially considering the pricing structure. We have had on-site demonstrations for both and were particularly impressed with Parago, with the way it organized assets and provided a virtual representation of the school. Spiceworks again seems to handle asset management quite well (I only tested it in inside a virtual environment so far, so haven't inventoried things like switches or printers). I have seen other spiceworks users complain about performance/impact of scanning on the network so I'm a little concerned about how well this would work in production. The tools you get in Spiceworks for assets are a bonus too (WOL, one click-VNC, etc.) I did have a few issues getting SysAid to properly WMI scan and deploy its agent to assets. This seems to have been eventually resolved when I pushed out some firewall exceptions (though I had been trying with the client firewalls disabled at one point). I haven't played too much with Web Help Desk's asset management so far, although I can see it does include a WMI scanner alongside its integration with 3rd party network discovery tools. Remote support Products I've looked at for remote support: VNC (RealVNC Enterprise, UltraVNC, TightVNC) ABTutor Impero SysAid Dameware Mini-Remote Control (SolarWinds) VNC is an obvious choice, although unfortunately the open-source versions are a little flaky with encryption/AD integration which would be nice to have. UltraVNC does have a screen blanking feature however, which not even RealVNC Enterprise fully supports (you would need to toggle the blanking on the server settings and then reconnect for this). I have used ABTutor v6 quite a bit in a past role, and generally found it to be quite a nice solution. I did encounter issues with the mirror driver on Windows 7 however, preventing Aero from working and more importantly breaking some D&T designing software. Hopefully the situation is better in v7. It's also a shame that AB doesn't seem support any form of authentication other than the connection password.. though perhaps we could configure the windows firewall to only allow connections from a management subnet/VLAN etc. It would also be nice if AB supported a command like argument to directly connect & watch a client; this way we could integrate for example Spiceworks using CustomURL to do a one click from ticket/asset to remote support (the best AB can do right now seems to be the -g flag to bring up a specific group). Impero is quite popular and seems to be packed with a lot of features. Unfortunately as some others on the forum have pointed out, it does come with a premium price tag. SysAid does come with a remote support aspect, however it appears to be licensed per channel, and isn't cheap. After getting it working, I discovered that it is merely a customized UltraVNC plus a more limited HTML5 client. Paying £100s more just so we can run more than one UltraVNC session at a time doesn't sound great. The Dameware remote control solution seems nice, including its own enhanced protocol as well as being able to connect to VNC/RDP. --- Bit of a long post I know, but if anyone currently has such a solution, is working on one, or has any experience with any of these products it would be useful to hear from you. Thanks, Karl

Hello all, does anyone have any views on the merits of Ultra vs Real VNC programs? I am planning to use it wirelessly from a laptop in the classroom to control a computer thats on the network connected to a projector. We have a (shock!) Novell network if that makes any difference. Cheers.

Hi everyone, but of an interesting problem here. The music department have ask me if its possible to view things displayed on an iphone on a macbook (and then through a projector). The macbook --> projector part is no problem but I'm having trouble finding an app that will allow me to view what is displayed on the iphone on the macbook. They'd like to be able to walk around and video what people are playing and display it on the big projector screen. I've looked into some apps (iDemo and Veency) but they require jailbreaking and as the phones are personal ones I wouldn't feel comfortable hacking them apart. I've also had a look into IP cameras etc but they are "too costly and have too many cables" (head of musics words). Any suggestions? Cheers James

Hi, Not really sure where this should live... I see Tight VNC is now an MSI. On the wesbite it tells you about all these lovely switches you can use to install the product in the way you want it. But i cant find any documents with all the switches. Does anyone have anything please? Thanks

We have recently started using VNC to access the teachers machines in order to solve little problems that they might have, like program installation, and accessing network drives. But when i try to connect to one of the machines i get an error of it is really starting to annony me as i have looked evrywhere for the answer. i am currently using VNC free edition V 4.1

I have a situation whereby a user has 2 laptops that connect to our network, and uses (professional / paid for version of) RealVNC to remotely connect to (up to 3 different) desktops. Both laptops can connect OK and browse the internet etc. Both laptops can also connect to the initial RealVNC session, whereby they are presented with thumbnails of the (three) remote desktops. Whichever laptop then connects first, to any of the 3 remote desktops (within RealVNC) the connection and remote (control) session is successful. However, whilst the first laptop has an active remote (control) session connection, when the other laptop attempts to connect to any of the (3) remote desktops, RealVNC connection fails (with a peer-to-peer network error). Even when one laptop is connected on our network, and the other (or both are connected) via a different internet connection (e.g. tethered mobile connection) – they both connect and function correctly. I have also switched the order in which each laptop connects (to eliminate any potential laptop specific issues) but makes no difference. Therefore, I know it is something related to our Internet connection, or more precisely our Firewall (e.g SonicWALL). I also ran some Packet Monitoring during the connection attempts, and (going by dropped connections) the following was noted: DROPPED, Drop Code: 160(Multicast forwarding not configured), Module Id: 25(network) Can anyone help, or advise of suggestions? Many Thanks,

Our school forces all internet traffic (ftp, http, https) through their web proxy. We have no access to change DNS servers, but I have set up a VPN to connect to my home computer. Is there anyway I can apply the proxy settings through TightVNC or another VNC program? Thanks, mathpie (Also, tunneling at the home computer is not possible- the router is password protected and it is not the default password.)

I have been looking into RDP settings and have found out that you can Enable RDP to act like VNC (ie - see the other person using the PC, take control etc) but it's disabled by default. I guess that it is modifying the registry in some area but can't see where. My plan is that if I can find the key its adding/changing, I can create a batch file, distribute to multiple servers/workstations and enable it on all devices. Any suggestions on how I can proceed?

Hi Guys, I have managed to get my version of TightVNC that came with Lanview 3 mangled in file transfer so that it doesnt work any more. I know Lanview is now on V4 but as I had not donated I am not entitled to it. I was hoping that someone could make the V3 tightvnc installation file available for me. If not if someone could give me a walkthrough on how to modify a standard install of TightVNC to work with Lanview V3. Thanks in advance Marc

I want to set up a system so that a VI pupil can access the IWB from a laptop in a secondary school. The Techie is raising objections. I need background info please.

Hi all, This is my first post and hope all you guys will help me in the issue. I want to access the office PCs over the Internet. The office PCs are in the LAN and LAN IP is 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3 and so on... I can able to access them locally using WinXP Remote Desktop and tightVNC but when I try to use outside from the office over the Internet then unable to connect We have an eTEC router in the office and I've configured the router firewall and open the port to access LAN PCs. Also have configured Windows Firewall, but no joy. I also have tried to open all TCP ports 1 to 65000 however no luck!! PLEASE HELP.. Thank you in advance; Have a nice weekend!
