Hello, Okay this might sound rudimentary, but I'm in need of some help here configuring my server. I am fairly new to Server 2012 R2 and I've only recently started studying for my MCSA due to my new job. Listed below is the hardware i currently use for my lab and the issues I've been having. Current hardware setup: So first off I have an ISP modem/router right now that hands out a 10.0.0.x IP address. Then I have a linksys router that I'm using and it hands out a 192.168.1.x IP address. Then I have a netgear 8 port switch. (Only Switch i had on hand) I have an Ethernet cable running from port 1 on the ISP modem to the Internet port on the router. Then I have an Ethernet cable running from port 1 on the router to port 1 on the switch. Then on port 2 on the switch I have an Ethernet cable going to the Windows server. So when I go to build the server I turn off DHCP on the router and leave it with the static 192.168.1.1 IP address with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 Then I setup the DHCP server and DNS server with the address scheme of 192.168.1.2 Also I have statically map my servers NIC to the following. IP: 192.168.1.2 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.1.2 Secondary DNS: 192.168.1.1 Services Currently Installed on the Server Active Directory- Working DHCP- Working- Scope: 192.168.1.40 - 192.168.1.75 Router: 192.168.1.1 [*]DNS- Working [*]RAS- Not working Current RAS Configuration: I configured it for VPN Access only to test if someone can access docs, software, etc. outside the network. i have the DHCP automatically handing out the DHCP to the clients instead of having an address pool. i have also allowed access for the VPN in AD and I'm using PPTP. -I have port forwarding on the router setup for PPTP: 1723 and i have enabled VPN Passthrough. -on the client side i have configured the vpn connection going to the server "192.168.1.2" and i entered the correct domain credentials, but it wont connect to the network. Currently im stuck at this point and i've watched every video under the sun on how to configure Remote access with 1 NIC and i still cant get the remote access to work.

Hi, Moodle was previously installed using an installer called Bitnami and I have been told that Moodle cannot be made available outside school as IIS was not configured on the 2008 server. Does anyone know about Bitnami installers for Windows as I have never come across it before?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could advise on the following scenario: I have a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and staff need remote access to it. I have used products that you log into a local server and displays the users files, the files that need to be edited have to be saved to the local machine then uploaded. The data being accessed needs to be kept secure and not taken off the local server has anyone created a solution using webdav ? Thanks.

Hi All, I wonder what could be the possibilities for sharing files securely on Windows server environment if you are not allowed to use any free services (Drop box, rapidshare.com, etccc) and must be securely published to the Windows Client users ? FYI: at the moment I'm using Juniper SSL VPN to access terminal server environment.

( I have reached out to Admin about community feedback, but never got a reply, Apologise if this against TOS) I've recently started working alongside OptiTune to help get the product ready for the MSP-Market. However.. being in education for 10 years and seeing the price I managed to negotiate for our MSP (Education) it made me realise Network Managers could really make use of a product like this. I'm not here to sell anything to be very clear. I'm only working with OptiTune on a Roadmap and Community Feedback to steer the product in the right direction. Long story short - Ignore the price on the website. I'm looking to work with some Network Managers at schools, to understand pricing, usability and requirements. I was an Infrastructure Manager at a Trust for 7 Years so completely understand budget constraints which is why I was personally never able to afford an RMM solution. Hello, I'm having a few people struggling to get a VPN connection to our 2012 R2 server. We have a static pool of 13 addresses but they don't all get used even though there is demand from remote users ie the connection attempt is rejected even when there is enough IP addresses in the static pool. In this screen shot I'm confused as to what the 192.168.8.192 IP Address is? When the static range was entered it just appeared. Do you need enough free IP address for the range you enter plus the generated IP Address? Many thanks

Hi All I need to give my staff a static IP to enable them access to Office 365, our office 365 is setup to only allow access from specific IP's, so far I've tried to use a VPN using "Perimeter 81" but it seems the laptops I have for staff although new they are struggling and also with the VON usage and their slow home internet its becoming almost impossible to use, so I need something like a smart DNS provider that masks the home IP's of my staff, is there anything that does that ? by using a smart DNS their internet speed will not be effected and I can whitelist a single IP on O365 but I can't find anything useful online most of the smart DNS I'm finding is for personal use and most of them are for people wanting to use netflix etc I can't use my own vpn as I neither have the bandwidth onsite nor will it solve the slow connection issues, any advise is much appreciated.

Hello all, We use Microsoft Direct Access, it's brilliant, I love it but I am new to the role and the previous Manager implemented and maintained this system. He used certify the web to take advantage of free certificates. The downside being they only last 90 days. We have a few servers that need updating so I decided to invests in a 2 year domain wildcard. The certificate has expired on the DA server and I need to import the new one. I am really struggling as I don't have a huge amount of experience with Powershell and have never used Server Core edition, I've only ever worked with a GUI. I have the.cer certificate and have copied it to \\da1\c$\certificates and have tried to use the following commands as per the screenshot but it gives me an error that it can't create that file because it already exists. I have also tried running Remove-NetIPHttpsCertBinding & netsh http delete sslcert ipport=0.0.0.0:443 to delete the existing certificate and remove the bindings then repeated but same problem. One thing i'm not sure about is the Application ID. When I run netsh http show sslcert it shows me 4 certificates. When doing the new bind, I am using the application ID from the one that shows an ip port of 0.0.0.0:443 - is this the what I should be using? Hopefully someone can look at my screenshot and tell me where I am going wrong. Any help would be much appreciated as I've spent hours on this! Many Thanks

Hi all, I may be soon taking on another school and I'm looking for the best way to connect to that school remotley. I need to be able to remote desktop user's machines and the Domain Controller. Years ago I did this at my current school using a VPN but only using PPTP on the DC (I got told that having the DC as the VPN server was not the greatest idea in terms of security so stopped after a few weeks). Any advice would be great, I'm open to suggestions for VPN or using an online service such as LogMeIn etc

Hi Guys I have been asked to implement remote access for staff and students to access their home drive from their home. Firstly Student must be able to access the home drive with the same username and password they use in the school to log into the network. Secondly the teaching staff be able to access their home drives and another shared drive with the same username and password they use in the school to log into the network. Please suggest any technologies if anyone have done this type of setup. Thanks

Yes, I know it's an old subject, and maybe this should be behind the red door, except it's of no interest except to those on LGfL. I find the restrictions are increasingly impeding the resolution of problems at my site. I deal with many external support companies (RM, HP, EBM, IOT, Serco, NRS, 5i, PS Financials, Tech-Ex, Securus, Impero etc. etc) each of which has several support staff potentially requiring remote access, so trying to set each up with a USO is just impractical, as well as adding delays to me getting support when I need it. I really can't see how allowing password-protected remote access to my networks is anything to do with the Grid, who seem to think they're a corporate IT department instead of a service company. Once a support agent has gained access to our network they're logged on as an account inside the school, and are fully traceable. And they only get in when I say they can. How are others faring?

We are currently installing our WLAN. This is a seperate network next to our wired LAN. The wired users are connected to shares via network drives and we would like to keep this functionallity. The wireless users, who connect to sharepoint, are all known in active directory, but their devices are not domain devices. We would like to make it possible for our wireless users to connect to the network shares/drives via Sharepoint. Is this possible through some sort of hyperlink in a portal page? And is this possible through remote access? Like working at home? Thanks in advance!! Best regards, Leon

Don't know if people have seen this already but Microsoft now allow deployment of Windows Server Essentials (formerly Small Business Server) by adding the "server Essentials Experience" role to a existing instance of Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard or Datacenter. Server essentials offers among other things "Remote Web Access" which can access files on the server and Windows clients on the LAN via RDP. Also you are no longer forced to use the build in Exchange server. Hi, my boss told me to let you all know about this little app that I've been making with the help of the RM Communities, so here goes. Over the past 8 months I've been building a website which I've dubbed Home Access Plus, it's a website coded in C# which allows students & staff to access their my documents, a basic booking system (staff only), a basic help desk (staff only again) from any internet enabled pc in the world. I've just released version 4.6, which has been a major build, and includes a new my computer interface, built in silverlight, and sporting drag and drop features, as well as near instant response times. Hi I'm possibly looking into setting up DirectAccess for our school so that the teachers can access their logins from home! has anyone got this setup within the LEA and have you got it working? is there anything i should look out for when setting this up or what do i need to prepare for it? As far as I'm aware / researched, I need to have a server that is a member of the domain 2 NICs one for internal and the other for external I need firewall ports opening up on the LEA firewall. and i need my Server FQDN in the LEA DNS. does this sound right? im currently studying for my 70-680 and read this in the book.

Hi just seen a great bit of software for Mac/IPAD etc.... its called foldr and allows you to access your Schools files from anywhere. Does anyone use it, or got any alternative?

Hi, I'd like some guidance on giving primary school teachers remote access. I have an an external ip forwarded to 172.16.1.226 on port 443. The PDC sits on 172.16.1.2 and a secondary dc on 172.16.1.5. My first thoughts were to turn the SDC into a terminal server and change it's IP to 172.16.1.226 but 5 Cals were in the region of £600. Now I've turned my attentions to OpenVPN to give them remote access to their mapped drives but I can't get my head around what needs installing and where. I presume OpenVPN server needs to be installed on the 172.16.1.226 computer. This means my PDC would need to have 172.16.1.226. Or is there a way of forwarding traffic to 172.16.1.226:443 to 172.16.1.2:443 posibly using Smoothwall? Many thanks for offering any help.

Hi We've just had a new server installed and domain built from scratch. Since we've had everything up and running again we can't conect to any external (outgoing) remote desktops connections. We keep getting the folowing error: The computer name and domain for the remote computer is correct. We're with exa-networks for firewall and filtering and they're adamant it's not them. All internal remote connections are working well and we can remote in to the site via offsite/mobile internet. We can also make external (outgoing) remote conections using a domain device to and mobile internet. We've also tried using domain admin account to establish a remote access connection to offisite server with not luck. Any thoughts on which step in the process we've missed will be greatfully recieved. Thanks in advance.
