Hi all, We have been told that we need to have Chromebooks in the school due to their multitude of benefits. I have embarked on the uphill battle of getting them perfect in our school for use with the students. A little background information on what we have done already We have signed up to Admin.Google.com so we can remotely manage our Chrome devices which is perfect for the most part. I have ventured two options in regards to creating a 'client' for the students to use to log into the virtual system, I will explain below. Kiosk Mode Via the console online I can assign a kiosk app to start upon boot, since I dont have the time nor the patience to create my own Kiosk app, I have decided to go with the top rated kiosk app so colourfully named 'Kiosk'. This app works very well, it allows users to boot straight into a predefined URL and gives them no access to any other parts of the Chromebook, with a nifty 'Admin' feature which you secure with a password to allow a 'way out'. The problem with this Kiosk app (and later I find other kiosk apps) is that the Citrix virtual sessions never actually launches, it just hangs. I have tried this through the internal portal and external CAG, all with the same result, I have concluded that the Kiosk apps do not work with virtual environments. Chrome Public Sessions This seems to be Googles answer to Kiosks, or something similar. Via the online console I can configure a multitude of options, forcing users to use google safe search for instance, blocking the installations of apps e.t.c e.t.c It also allows me to auto launch the web browser and point it to a URL as default, and logging into the virtual system works!. So what's the problem Ryan? Public Sessions can be configured in many ways, as described above. However, you cannot lock down the bar at the bottom of Chrome OS, allowing users to use the search function, to click network settings, Bluetooth settings, volume. Users can navigate to the devices main settings and adjust the display, touchpad ... the list goes on and on. I can just imagine how much fun a handful of 12 to 18 year olds will have with that much power... Hopefully you can see my headache, so my question to you guys is ... Do you run Chromebooks in your school, if so, how the hell do you lock them down ? If you don't run virtual, but you have managed to lock them down without an auto launched kiosk app, tell me how oh guru! Thanks Ryan TL/DR 1. Kiosk App applied via the admin console don't seem to work with a Citrix Virtual Environment. 2. Public Sessions is too wide open, kids will change all the settings and we'll have a bad time! 3. I'm pulling my hair out finding a way to get these to work in our school. 4. TELL ME HOW!

Not too sure if any knows the answer but I have been ask to install impero on the Citrix Servers so the teacher can see each connection. Is anyone aware if this can be done and if it can be done what should I look out for? Just found this information Citrix Xen Desktop: Base template and a cloned desktop pool Install the Imperclientsetupxxxx.msi to the base image. If you want the name of the thinclient to report back to Impero console you will need to install Citrix tools. Static Virtual Machine Install the Imperclientsetupxxxx.msi to each static virtual machine in use. Citrix Xen App: For published desktops: Deploy Impero client to the Xen App server using the Citrix recommended install practices For Application publishing: This is currently an unsupported configuration for Impero. It has not been tested and is therefore not currently supported.

Hi, I've just taken over a new network which uses Citrix VDI-in-a-box and it's seems to have developed a problem. I know nothing about this product apart form it was working a few weeks ago and I haven't (previous technician might have) touched anything. The problem that I have now is that when a user logs onto the box, the user is pushed to the session and the user gets logged in but then nothing happens. No applying gpos, no installing software, no nothing just sits with the windows wallpaper and the shutdown/restart icon on the bottom corner and nothing happens. If I rdp into the hyper-v box it logs in but I'm guessing Citrix then logs me out automatically. So the hyper-v box works fine but there seems to be a Citrix client problem. I'm utterly clueless in how to troubleshoot this problem so any help would be great. Thanks yours.... Novice.

Hello, I have a very strange problem with Virtual desktops on HP t410 All in Ones. By default I have set the cursor scheme settings to "Windows Standard (extra large) (system scheme)" on teacher and student desktops. This works fine when using the virtual desktops, however there seems to be a bug with certain sized cursor that the cursor changes and then a black square appears behind the cursor (see pictures below) Set up Windows 8.1 Ent (64bit) Citrix XenDesktop 7.5 HP t410 AiO Wondering if anyone else has come across this? Thank you, William

Hello all, Quick Query to any Citrix experts out there. I have setup a XenApp Server to host Applications (SIMS, Discover, Solidworks etc) and a XenDesktop system for VDIs used for internal thin clients and external remote access. The XenDesktop VDIs have the Citrix Reciever installed, and this connects through passthrough authentication and presents the user with the correct applications. The issue I am having is printer re-direction. The VDI picks up local printers from the host (be it a home computer or a Windows thin PC client) however the XenApp apps do not pick up these printers. If the Reciever is installed on a fat client printers are re-directed to the apps successfully. any suggestions on what I may be missing here/ how to get this working? Cheers

Hi All We are running SOLUS 3 Agents (Version 3.4.64) on all our Citrix Servers. There appears to be a problem with the software where it causes the session to flash for about 20-30 seconds at launch. I'm presuming that its trying to check for an update. Has anyone else experienced this? Also is there a way to hide the SOLUS Agent? There isn't any need to have this on the Citrix Servers. Thanks Tom

Hi guys! I am fairly new to the world of desktop virtualization. And I have a question some of you may find funny due to its noobish nature. I am also new here, so if I missed anything or did something against the norms of this forum, I apologize in advance. First, I will explain the process: My client has a server that holds X number of images (.TIFF files). Multiple computers access that server via Citrix to work on those image files. The extent of the 'work' mentioned only includes: 1. Labeling - by inserting a line of text on the image, like a watermark of sort. 2. Validation - the image is a scanned copy of documents. Image quality is not that important, as long as it is readable. The Fineprint: 1. Server is located on a different continent. 2. As a security measure, image files cannot be downloaded, thus the need to access the server via Citrix. All applications needed to work on the images are also published/virtualized from there. 3. There is no minimum screen resolution requirement to view the images as long as it is readable. 4. Connection to the client is via MPLS/IPBB (40Mbps). Some Notes: 1. Version of Citrix being used TBD. 2. Assuming they are using v4.5 or later, and SpeedScreen is already enabled (well, it is enabled by default). lol 3. Other image compression tools were already used. THE QUESTION(S): Is Citrix the best tool for this job? What are my alternatives/options given this kind of task? The client finds the image rendering too slow and cumbersome, even with the image compression activated. From what I have read, Citrix employs lossy compression while VMWare, lossless. There is still a lot of gray area in this scenario. I have already sent my set of questions to the client (will get the answers next week as soon as the person responsible comes back from vacation), and I will be posting them here as soon as I get them. TL;DR: Working on image files on a remote server using Citrix and the client finds the image rendering too slow. What are my other options aside from Citrix? Thank you!

Citrix have just announced a new version of their free Xen Server, version 5.5 The bullet points: * Consolidated Backup allows third-party backup vendors to interface directly with XenServer to provide full and incremental, in-guest, file and image backups of virtual machines. The new consolidated backup capabilities in XenServer also provide customers with the ability to execute full GUI-based snapshots directly from the XenCenter central management console. * Enhanced Conversion Tools make it easy to convert virtual machines created in the VMDK format (commonly used by VMware) into the VHD format (commonly used by Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V). The new XenConvert tools also make it easy to seamlessly convert between any of the common open virtualization format packages, including OVF (open virtualization format), OVA (open virtual appliance) and XVA (XenServer virtual appliance). * Enhanced Search enables customers to view and manage XenServer environments by a range of criteria including VM name, resource pool, location, server, storage repository, snapshot time, and network name – all from a single location. It also provides the ability to create custom views or folders. * Active Directory Integration makes it easy for customers to use their AD credentials to mange XenServer hosts as well as log and audit user activity. * Expanded Guest Support adds SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, Debian 5.0 and RedHat/CentOS/Oracle 5.3 to a growing list of supported guests that includes virtually every version of the Windows and Linux operating systems. The beta, as well as a 30-day trial version of Citrix Essentials, is available at Citrix Systems » Citrix XenServer: Efficient Virtual Server Software. The beta version of the new Citrix XenServer 5.5 is also available today and can be downloaded free of charge from Citrix Systems » Products » -- XenServer/Essentials » XenServer. The 5.5 version of both product lines will be generally available June 19. Linky: Citrix Systems » Citrix Upgrades Server Virtualization Product Lines for XenServer and Hyper-V

I have an issue with the clocks being wrong on all our terminal clients (all running ThinStation or HP's debian linux version). The machines all have their hardware clocks set correctly, and the server has its clock set correctly, yet when users log in, their clock is 1 hour slow. This obviously causes trouble with things such as calendars and time sensitive applications (FMS for example). I have both of the 2 Time Zones options in the Citrix Presentation Server Console set to disabled (ie. do not estimate local time for legacy clients and do not use clients' local time). And in the Group Policy applicable to the terminal servers, the 'Allow Time Zone Redirection' option (under Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Terminal Services -> Client/Server data redirection). I've tried combinations of all of these, to no avail. Any ideas how to solve this annoying issue?

One of the things I keep getting requests for is a single sign on system, which can integrate any software without needing modules etc... for it. Now the only packages I've come across that can do this are Citrix Platinum and another like that. The issue always turns up as being cost. We're talking hundreds of pounds per computer. Does anyone know of either a cheap system that does this or an open source project that is doing this? Or am I forever doomed to pass messages back that it is and always will be outside our financial reach?

Hi, I have implemented XenApp with NetScaler and wanted to publish a desktop to enable shortcut on desktop type access to MS Access Databases which users insist on using. After reading up it is apparent the publish desktop option is not secure enough for my environment and to do this it looks like I need to purchase the XenDesktop module. I currently have 2 NetScalers for redundancy and 1 XenApp Virtual Server and a Management VM. I have bag for resource available to increase the 2008 R2 VM Server and could create more VM's to increase servers for load balancing. I have 20GB infrastructure and 1GB to the Desktop. I only need to support 50 users with a Desktop with 3 shortcuts to these (vile) DB's and wonder - and appreciate this is a wide open question - Can anyone provide a little assistance by way of a technical approach and if I need to supplement resources to support - assuming my XenDesktop thoughts are correct. The VM for XenApp has 8 CPU's and 64GB RAM I think from memory. Any help would be gratefully received. Kind Regards, JOhn

Hello, We are running XenServer and XenDesktops 5.6 and have created a gold image for students to use with both Windows 7 and Office 2013 activated via our internal KMS server. The problem we have is when we create the desktops from the gold image (approx 30) they are no longer activated. I was wondering what the best practice is for KMS activation for both windows and office on citrix virtual desktops? Any info would be great. Thank you, William

Hi All, What spec of server would be suitable for 60 clients to connect to VDI In-A-Box? We want to run Windows 7 for all users so 1.5GB minimum RAM for each connection?, want around a 20GB base image, we use HyperV for virtualisation. Any more info you need just ask, thanks!

The USB drive maps correctly to U: as I want however I get an 'access denied' errror when I attempt to open the drive up. This even happens as Administrator. I have checked: Group Policy Settings Terminal Server connection settings Citrix Policy Settings Citrix Server Settings Any ideas?

Hello, I recently made a post about deploying printers via gpp. I have this working fine for our physical systems on site however I have seemed to have overlooked our citrix desktops. Is it possible to use Item-level Targeting (an environment variable) to add a printer based on the client name of the desktop and not the actual computer name? We have 3 rooms all with thin clients which have desktops from the same XenDesktop pool. Is it possible to deploy a printer using gpp to citrix desktops based on client name? example: Citrix Desktop Name: VSTUW8-024 Client Name: H11-06 Printer to map: H11-Mono Hope this makes sense? Thank you, William Edit: I found a way to do it using Citrix Policies. A video can be found at http://www.citrix.com/tv/#videos/5177 Just need to use Client Name instead of IP range as that is what is used in video

Hi All, We have just switched from windows embedded to thinpro HP t510 thin clients however when connecting to the published desktop via the ICA connection the full screen display does not display the correct resolution. Is there a setting of some sort on the server side where you can configure display settings for the clients as I have exhausted all avenues to get it to display correctly we are running xenapp 6.5 windows server 2008 r2. thanks in advance

Hi, I don't know if this is possible or not? We've got an old DL380 G5 server in our office that isn't being used. This will eventually be replaced however we're wanting to trial Citrix. We've been given 2 iPad's as a donation (iPad 2, 16GB) and 4x Thin Clients which we're planning to use a endpoint devices with Citrix. We're planning to install XenServer to the DL380 and use a free trial of Citrix XenDesktop to look at it's possibilities. However, from the XenDesktop - we're going to want to play YouTube on the Thin Clients. Is there such a way we can configure the Thin Client to have the YouTube video rendered on the device itself (using the internal graphics card) rather than on the Server? We have no third-party Graphics Cards on the Server itself, so wanting to render all videos on the Thin Client, if possible? Might be asking a stupid question, but wanting to know what our options are? In short: 4x thin clients, DL380 - wanting to play video on thin clients without assigning graphics cards to DL380 - possible? Thanks.

We recently setup two Citrix Access Gateways to allow our users to ssl vpn into our network. It works great on windows 7 machines but on windows XP you can not hit anything on network. I get an IP address i can ping the IP of the client from a machine inside the network and I get replies but when I ping from the ssl client to the machine inside the network I don't get any replies. Also it works on XP if i turn off windows firewall. Any one have any suggestions as to what windows firewall may be blocking? I have nsload.exe as an exception on the firewall but still does not allow any traffic to go through.

Hi all you citrix bods, I have a question. I am wanting to turn on our Web Interface for certain key members of staff to use to remote in. Only thing is I want this to be secure. ie. HTTPS site and then secure connection to the server. What do I need to do to do this? The admin guide isn't exactly the most helpful thing in the world. I am running Windows 2003 R2 servers, Citrix XenApp 5, and will be using ISA to do the 'publishing' as it calls it. Also, what ports need to be open? Cheers Tony

Citrix have released new versions of both XenApp and XenDesktop.
