I think it depends what you define as real time. If you absolutely have to have minute by minute access to the latest information then you are going to have to go with SIMS webparts. If you want to see what is possible using SharePoint (which I am assuming it is you are using) then take a look at the Twynham School website (which helpfully appears to be down at the moment). Alternatively take a look at Mike Herrity's blog for a run down of what they have done. They have used SQL Reporting Services to pull out information from their CMIS database. A bit late in replying to this but though I might as well anyway... If you have a School Agreement and have either of the Core CALs or the Desktop School CAL (which includes Vista, Office and Core CAL) then you will have the client device licenses for SCCM. That is correct. SCVMM Workgroup Edition can manage up to 5 physical hosts. Pricing wise then you'd be looking at around £100 (but much less if you're doing it under School Agreement). If you're going to grow past 5 hosts then pricing does go up quite a bit for Enterprise Edition.

When I spoke to MSFT last week they didn't know exactly what version of Windows 7 would be included in the School Agreement, although it wasn't one of the licensing specialists I spoke to. Assuming it follows the same principle as the previous agreement which included Vista Enterprise then I would expect that it would be for Windows 7 Enterprise - which does include BitLocker and BitLocker2Go. Yes it does seem a bit unfair

If you have a School Agreement then you will be able to install Windows 7 for no extra cost as part of your agreemnet. The EU issue has no bearing on this. What you will not be able to do is migrate from Win XP to Win 7 using upgrade media you will need to do a clean install of Win 7. I would suggest that this is the best way to approach this anyway to stop any legacy hardware/software issues coming with you and messing up your new setup. It is supposed to be available to all volume license customers on 1st September although I have read that it may be released in mid-August too. So you will be able to download the relevant media and get access to your volume licenses for Windows 7 from the Microsoft MVLS website.

A full feature comparison can be downloaded here. The majority of schools where we have deployed XenApp have been via Advanced licenses. To get additional features like provisioning and application performance monitoring that will definately add value (but cost even more) you need to go to the Platinum Edition. There is an upgrade path to the other version from Advanced if you decide you need the additional features in the future.

No Frontpage is now called Expression Web Web Overview < Product Information | Microsoft® Expression®. There is another product that is sort of a derivative of the old Frontpage called Sharepoint Designer but that is solely for the design of SharePoint pages and not for generic web design. You will need to license your school for Expression Web if you want to continue to use Frontpage (or upgrade to the newer product). Think cost of Expression Web is around £2 - £3 per machine under a Microsoft School Agreement.

Students (and therefore parents/guardians) will only be covered to access your SharePoint site remotely if you have bought Student User CALs for every student. You will also need a Windows Server CAL for every student too. School Agreement Student Core CAL = under £1
