Hello all, Quick Query to any Citrix experts out there. I have setup a XenApp Server to host Applications (SIMS, Discover, Solidworks etc) and a XenDesktop system for VDIs used for internal thin clients and external remote access. The XenDesktop VDIs have the Citrix Reciever installed, and this connects through passthrough authentication and presents the user with the correct applications. The issue I am having is printer re-direction. The VDI picks up local printers from the host (be it a home computer or a Windows thin PC client) however the XenApp apps do not pick up these printers. If the Reciever is installed on a fat client printers are re-directed to the apps successfully. any suggestions on what I may be missing here/ how to get this working? Cheers

Hello, We are running XenServer and XenDesktops 5.6 and have created a gold image for students to use with both Windows 7 and Office 2013 activated via our internal KMS server. The problem we have is when we create the desktops from the gold image (approx 30) they are no longer activated. I was wondering what the best practice is for KMS activation for both windows and office on citrix virtual desktops? Any info would be great. Thank you, William

Hi, I have implemented XenApp with NetScaler and wanted to publish a desktop to enable shortcut on desktop type access to MS Access Databases which users insist on using. After reading up it is apparent the publish desktop option is not secure enough for my environment and to do this it looks like I need to purchase the XenDesktop module. I currently have 2 NetScalers for redundancy and 1 XenApp Virtual Server and a Management VM. I have bag for resource available to increase the 2008 R2 VM Server and could create more VM's to increase servers for load balancing. I have 20GB infrastructure and 1GB to the Desktop. I only need to support 50 users with a Desktop with 3 shortcuts to these (vile) DB's and wonder - and appreciate this is a wide open question - Can anyone provide a little assistance by way of a technical approach and if I need to supplement resources to support - assuming my XenDesktop thoughts are correct. The VM for XenApp has 8 CPU's and 64GB RAM I think from memory. Any help would be gratefully received. Kind Regards, JOhn

I am interested in your opinion on the following: I am installing a new VDI solution which will be based on Citrix XenDesktop. This much is certain, what is not quite so clear cut is the other variations that I could use. Which of the following would you use and why: Scenario A: Install XenDesktop only. Install all applications onto the base image and manage user applications via group policy and logon scripts. Scenario B: Install XenDesktop and XenApp. Install a small base image consisting of the core OS and esential apps that all will use and publish other apps to users via XenApp. Scenario C: Install VDI-in-a-Box which is essentially the same as option A Considerations: If I take Scenario A then the images will bloat as I install more and more apps which could result in extended load times and more demands on storage BUT the licence costs are lower. If I take Scenario B then the images will remain small but there is the possibility that users will be confused by the delay when applications are launched [streamed via XenApp] resulting in multiple clicks and multiple copies loaded. Users can also be confused by the difference between accessing shared storage where local drives are presented differently in published apps. The licenses are also more expensive. There could also be the temptation to install more and more software into the base image to resolve the issues just documented. If I take Scenario C then the user interface is clean and manageable but I still have the same issues as Scenario A. My gut instinct tells me that the correct way to go with this is to go for Scenario B so that I can maximise of the 'Power of 1' features - but this will probably impact on usability of staff and students in that it will cause confusion which will inevitably result in going back to Scenario A in the long term. Thoughts and considerations welcome. Thank you, Martin

Citrix have released new versions of both XenApp and XenDesktop. Issues fixed in XenApp 6.5: CTX130371 - Issues Fixed in Citrix XenApp 6.5 for Windows Server 2008 R2 - Citrix Knowledge Center Issues fixed in XenDesktop 5.5: CTX130369 - Citrix XenDesktop 5.5 - Issues Fixed in This Release - Citrix Knowledge Center However, it doesn't appear that you can upgrade from a previous version - you need to do a clean install followed by a migration: Installing and Configuring XenApp - Citrix eDocs Chad

I have put together a brief case study of our Citrix school-wide deployment, for anyone who is interested. I'm happy to go into more details if required - just let me know. Hope someone finds it useful. Donald Desktop Virtualisation Case Study.pdf

Afternoon Is there an easy way of finding out what XDs are using what Base Disk on a datastore? I have a number of base disks, some dating back over a year and I am convinced that they are not being used. When i run a Pending Update is Yes seach I get nothing back so i know that all my XDs are up to date, but I dont want tdelete the old base disks in case i break something! The other alternative was to delete all the XDs, clear the datastores and then re-create the XDs - good idea? Hope someone else has come across this? Wayne

Hi, I'm looking to properly try out Citrix XenDesktop at home with a spare Server and PC I have. I used to have an ISO for Citrix XenDesktop 5.6 Express Edition when it was current (2013 era, I think?) however when searching for it on one of the servers, it appears I have deleted it and are having trouble obtaining the installation files anywhere online. It used to be a free product and was wondering if any of you had a copy of it you could send me? I still have my original licence file in my E-Mail however when trying to obtain the installation files off the Citrix website I get redirected to a page with "Oops, the page your trying to view isn't here." Any help or guidance appreciated. I know it's a long shot but hoping one of you may be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks, Tom
