About rdk

  1. I know it'll be tomorrow for a response. it does seem to be random across different users, which is why its such a weird problem. I'm wondering if it's an issue with home routers/ISP as there seems to be nothing our send to distinguish between users.
  2. We are currently teaching online our 7-12 school in Melbourne of about 920 students. We use Meet for all our classes and meetings, and for the most part it is going well, with teachers and students all working from home. However, we do have the situation where occasionally a user joins a Meet but are immediately kicked off. Sometimes they click/join/get ejected multiple times and can never join, and sometimes the do manage to get on. Sometimes this lasts for an entire afternoon then seems to resolve itself. This seems completely random - we can't determine anything about the user, the Meet, the browser, the extensions. We've tried upgrading OS/disabling all extensions, different browsers etc. The one constant is that it occurs on a Mac (we are a Mac school). Anyone have any ideas, or have experienced something similar?
  3. I'm a teacher as well as having some IT admin responsibilities and I deal with a lot of work email after hours. If I'm working at home I would rather get the email and deal with it then if possible, rather than wait till 8:30 the next morning when a load arrive and it might not be until late afternoon or evening when I can deal with things. And when I've dealt with someone's problem or answered their question I want to send a "done" email immediately. In short, it would mean more work, not less, to have restrictions on sending (and thus receiving) out of hours email.
  4. This is ours made in Google Sites. Student's is similar but with embedded Google Docs daily notices that the office edits.
  5. We use Spanning backup. Quite expensive, but we only do it for staff, not students.
  6. We're a girls' secondary in Melbourne (yr 7 - 12) and we've had unblocked YouTube for about 4 years with no issues.
  7. Somewhat patronising. And we wonder why there's a recruitment crisis in education.
  8. We use Spanning at $US20 per user, but we only back up staff/faculty/shared accounts, not students.
  9. If going down the Google Apps route I strongly recommend Hapara Teacher Dashboard. It costs (here $5 per student) but worth every cent - makes sharing/distributing/checking work seamless for both students and teachers. Your most IT-illiterate teacher will be able to use it to have access to student work done in their subject. It sounds dramatic but Teacher Dashboard revolutionised our use of GAFE. Classroom does something similar (but I don't think as well) for free. I wouldn't try to use GAFE (sharing between teachers and students for work) without one of those two tools.
  10. I'm surprised your school lets teachers talk to kids - you never know what they might say.
  11. I've done the education ones ie Google Certified Educator: https://www.google.com/edu/training/get-certified/ In general, harder than I thought and lots of "gotcha" type questions - ie questions like "how many users can edit a document at the same time". Besides knowing "lots" the specific answer is not really important in terms of using the applications well. But the admin exam looks interesting. I would only recommend if you have been actively administering a domain for a while.

    Upgrading MacBook

Does that mean it made no difference, or it made a great deal of difference?

    Office Mac 2016 Preview

Installing now. Will be interesting to see what its like. The old version hasn't started to feel outdated to me yet, not like Pages etc before the last update.
  14. I've just done some quick testing. We have G+ turned on for those year levels that are 13+, but all year levels (organised in Sub Orgs) have YouTube turned on. With a newly created account in a Yr 7 sub-org (no G+) I can access youtube (and be signed in) and watch videos but not upload a video or create a channel. This might be because a brand new account can't be in good standing immediately - I'll have to see some of our kids at school next week. I didn't know about the G+ thing so this wold be news to me.
  15. Can you expand on what Salamander is please?
