2013 and the state of VLEs in some schools
NewOrder replied to speckytecky's topic in Virtual Learning Platforms
Adoption of a VLE is very difficult. Whatever one you select does not depend on the technology but the group of people to drive it forward. SharePoint is both a success and failure in the commercial world for the same reasons. If its well implemented with governance and the topdown message it works. If its just put out there then it fails. It becomes a glorified shared drive. -
I worked in the field of SharePoint in education for a number of years but I now work in the corporate world. Oddly this is the same issue businesses have. They all want document management and information management. Versioning is the biggie. If you succeed with the SharePoint buy in, the next step is start with a document policy followed by document storage rules. Then governance for your libraries. Versioning, retention and auditing. Always use content types for your documents.
-
Last year I completed a document mangement system for a Global organisation using 2010 server. I used everything you mentioned and more. Workflows retention and auditing. Content organiser, send to and routing. Content and document types. The only thing I did not use was folders. The problem is schools still use folders in sharepoint libraries what a waste. Recently I had to assess whether I could rebuild a similar system in Office 365 or foundation server. The answer was no. But what I've seen of schools over the years using SharePoint most only need foundation or 365. Because most only replicate shared drives ( folders ) in sharepoint.

Recently came in contact with 5 Free Schools 1 Bromcom, 2 Progresso and 2 hosted sims. All moving from on premise servers

[sims] SIMS & FMS Summer 2012 release is available.

Has SLG been pulled today ? -
Check to make sure that openhive works fully with Capita ADP.
-
To use the words Learning Gateway is deceiving, although I do not think Capita did it on purpose. SLG has no learning element ie SLK or moodle, it is merely a webbased cut down version of sims to give staff, students and families a view of data. It allows some writeback. I have just returned to education from a contract in the NHS working with a BI company. They certainly have the webparts, interaction for their data that schools could only marvel at. Mind you it was sharepoint 2010 connected to a OLAP cubes and sql

Does anybody have 2 factor authentication on their VLE or external access to MIS?

I assume you are talking about Birchfield? I believe they have packaged their videos in to scorm. Certainly not the best way to do it. For online delivery you need smaller scorm packages with links to video. This makes it easier to use in learning Platforms.
-
If you build an LMS into live@edu you nearly have it all. Do you need your own school hosted vle? People will say is it secure is it linked to the MIS. Well how many VLE's are truely interoperable with their MIS, how many VLE's push their scorm results to the MIS?

The issue will be cost. Not many 2010 hosting suppliers at present. SharePoint 2010 Hosting | Hosted SharePoint 2010 | SharePoint 2010 Hosted

Using 2010, SharePoint designer and visio you can create workflows. You draw it out in Visio. Then add with SharePoint designer then upload. Youtube has some excelent demos. -

Unfortunately you are correct. I know its a cost issue but you certainly get more for your bucks. 2010 allows users to do more out of the box with little code needed. -

If you have 2010 you can do some simple work flows linked to lists. A lot better than 2007. Using SharePoint designer you can start a workflow then if you have visio you can visualise your workflow. Those 2 really work well with 2010. Remember Your list can have a calendar view.
