Hello! I have been asked to run a KS2 Coding club (starting tomorrow, nothing like short notice eh!) and I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations on what free websites are out there to use? I'm hoping to identify a group of children to become 'digital leaders' to pass on IT skills to younger children and run this club as a curated group, rather than a baby sitting service So far we only use Code.org, which is awesome! and free iPad apps such as SpriteBox, ALEX, DaisyTheDinosaur, BeeBot/BlueBot/etc. We are a chromebook (and ipad) school so websites with Google SSO would be fab. Suggestions are very much appreciated, Thanks!

Morning all, We have been teaching computer science for a few years now and I originally put in place some virtual machines to use Visual Studio programming which involves EXE's. Sadly the Virtual machines are being abused and people are deleting each others work so I am looking for a new solution. How does everyone else deal with Programming classes that need to save executable's? Currently EXE's are banned on our network drives with FSRM for obvious reasons. I was thinking of scripting some kind of special area to save, just not sure how to do it.

Hi folks, I was wondering what other schools are using to run A-Level Computing and/or Programming courses. We have been teaching it for three years now, but the teacher running it still hasn't decided what software they need for it to be completely successful. I've asked numerous times what software they require, but they just respond 'I don't know, programming and code don't really interest me to be honest'. An odd response from someone supposed to be teaching the thing, but enough of my moaning. What I have set up is: Windows 7 hosts computers, on the network with all the usual group policy restrictions in place. VirtualBox installed on each PC with a Windows 7 VM configured. The VMs are not connected to the internet or the school network, they have their network cards disabled, but students log on to Windows with admin accounts. Installed on the VirtualBox VMs are .net framework, C# developer and python. If a student does anything untoward on one of the VMs or installs anything they shouldn't, we just delete the VM and copy over a fresh one for them. The problem I have got is that our students want to use Visual Studio to put a nice front end on things. Whilst I can install it for them, it requires connectivity to the internet in order to launch each time. Given that these VM's are unrestricted, so that students can create and run their own code and batch files etc, the last thing I want to do is join them to my network or allow them out onto the internet. Does anyone have any suggestions or decent free alternatives to Visual Studio? thanks in advance.

The staff want to introduce python programming into the school. I was wondering how this can be done safely. My concern is that a pupil will cut and paste malicious code into python make an exe and run it. Also a program that is easy to deploy would be nice

Hello, Our school district currently has SIF (school interop framework) running between our student info system and various other databases. I want to know if it's possible to write one for our library automation system, as to purchase one would cost us thousands initially. Looking on the web, I found this: uva-core - Google Code Uva Software And plan to play around with it; however, I'm wondering if anyone else uses SIF or has had any experience doing what I'm trying to do. Thanks!

I am a masters student, currently doing research on creating an access control system that utilizes a smart card reader, a magnetic door lock and an existing information system developed on the .NET Framework that should avail data that the access control system then uses to determine if access should be granted or not. I have been searching for some kind of programmable access control system (smart card reader and magnetic door lock) that can also be connected to an information system over a network, but my search is yielding no helpful results. Could someone please help me with some information on what equipment and software I would need to pull this off. All help is highly appreciated!

Hi, I'm trying to revise my "knowledge" in C++ and program probably worked is doing something stupid. Program should read from file First name then last name and finally mark that person got, then move to another person and so on. Next step program asks user to enter his score and compare this score with scores which read from file (Mark < Score) and display and write to file everyone who got higher mark than user. Instead of that program writes to file details of first person from file either she got higher score than user or not (doesn't follow program condition). Here is a code: // lab5_q1.cpp : Defines the entry point for the console application. // fstream.cpp // #include #include #include using namespace std; void main() { ifstream InFile; ofstream OutFile; char FirstName[20], LastName[20]; int Score; int Mark; cout << "Please enter your mark: "; cin >> Mark; InFile.open("Records.txt"); InFile >> FirstName >> LastName >> Score; OutFile.open("HighScores.txt"); OutFile << FirstName << LastName << Score; while (!InFile.eof()) { InFile >> FirstName >> LastName >> Score; if (Mark < Score) { cout << FirstName << " " << LastName << " " << Score << endl; OutFile << FirstName << " " << LastName << " " << Score << endl; } } InFile.close(); OutFile.close(); system("pause"); } Note: if you want to test this code just create file records.txt with example names i.e John Doe 65 Jane Smith 42 Carl Young 59 Sarah Jones 77 Kevin Harris 68 Chris Billington 73 I bet it's simple but i'm groping. Thanks

Just wondering what sort of solutions you guys have come up with for this.. Our ICT department want to teach PHP at key stage 5. Obviously this requires some sort of webserver to interpret the PHP commands and output to HTML. The ICT department are not interested in online services such as compileonline.com We could either set up our own internally or go for a hosted service, with a subdomain and associated ftp account for each student taking the course (roughly 10). I'd be grateful for any thoughts alternative solutions members of Edugeek have come up with. Cheers.

Morning all, Been asked by an IT teacher about good sites that the kids can use to learn Java. Something they can do in class and at home in their own time if possible. We are currently using codeacademy.com for javascript and html/css which is fantastic, and a site I would recommend. Has anyone come across anything similar to this? Thanks

Hello everyone, Been asked to deploy Microsoft Small Basic out to our IT Suite computers. We use App-V for all our software deployment. However, I have packaged the software into an App-V 5.0 SP3 Package but when testing it, Small Basic continually crashes during launch, at the splash screen. I have tried tweaking various settings in the Sequencer, to no avail. Was wondering if anyone else has had any success with getting Small Basic App-V'd? Any help much appreciated.

Hi Everyone The school has around 10 probots (Pro-Bot) do any other schools use these? They are good for basic programming and control. The software supplied still ships with Windows XP drivers and will not work with windows 7 machines, has anyone else faced this problem and can anyone point me in the direction of a workaround or windows 7 driver? Darren.

Hey all, I wasn't able to find posts on this topic, and honestly, I'm not sure it's possible. Here's what I'm looking to do: Our helpdesk is ran from an externally hosted website @ http://www.myschoolbuilding.com I have contacted SchoolDude (our helpdesk provider) and was told I cannot accomplish what I'm trying to do via any tool that they have. Once the org. code is entered, users type in their email address, fill in general information (name, location, problem from a combo box, etc) and submit their request. I'm trying to make the process easier in our computer labs for them to enter work orders for lab issues, yet still use our already-in-place work order form online. I'd like for the email, user info, and problem type pages to be automated. I am familiar with C++, Java, and Python, and feel that within at least one of these this is possible. I'm love a push in the right direction, or to be told it's not an option so I can at least stop looking. =) For more detail, feel free to look at the work order system itself: The below link is the first page our requestors see, asking them to enter their email. SchoolDude - ToolBox Login Next, the page asks for additional information. I've attached a screenshot. At the bottom of the page is a Submit button. Hopefully what I'm looking to do is clear - if not please ask. Thanks!

i have been tasked with setting up python in our computer science lab, part of their course is to learn python. i herd that there has been many problems with installing python in schools one being that the default save directory is on the C:\\ drive which is no good. is there a way of installing this successfully? the default save directory will need to be in student documents area. i would appreciate any advise.

Probably a silly question, but most of the programming environments that we would like to use give students unacceptable access to the C: drive and other areas. This is a problem for our technicians, because as a teacher of AS/A2 computing I need my students to be able to program at school. We have one great big CC3 network and no "safe" rooms. Where do we go from here? Jim

Can somebody please recommend me a free (decent) online course or good book that I can use to learn python. I am interested in learning the language but I'm not too sure what is the best way to go about it. If someone could help me out that would be great. (This will be my first language.
