Hi folks, I was wondering what other schools are using to run A-Level Computing and/or Programming courses. We have been teaching it for three years now, but the teacher running it still hasn't decided what software they need for it to be completely successful. I've asked numerous times what software they require, but they just respond 'I don't know, programming and code don't really interest me to be honest'. An odd response from someone supposed to be teaching the thing, but enough of my moaning. What I have set up is: Windows 7 hosts computers, on the network with all the usual group policy restrictions in place. VirtualBox installed on each PC with a Windows 7 VM configured. The VMs are not connected to the internet or the school network, they have their network cards disabled, but students log on to Windows with admin accounts. Installed on the VirtualBox VMs are .net framework, C# developer and python. If a student does anything untoward on one of the VMs or installs anything they shouldn't, we just delete the VM and copy over a fresh one for them. The problem I have got is that our students want to use Visual Studio to put a nice front end on things. Whilst I can install it for them, it requires connectivity to the internet in order to launch each time. Given that these VM's are unrestricted, so that students can create and run their own code and batch files etc, the last thing I want to do is join them to my network or allow them out onto the internet. Does anyone have any suggestions or decent free alternatives to Visual Studio? thanks in advance.

My CS students are using VS2017CE as their IDE. Board controlled assessment criteria requires no internet access. VS2017CE checks license validity online every 12 hours. Currently I have the following in my filtering exceptions list. Has anyone else noticed any more URLs used for this purpose? Activation seems to still be failing, but not for everyone. officeclient.microsoft.com vo.msecnd.net vortex.data.microsoft.com vsspsext.visualstudio.com azure.com vssps.visualstudio.com digicert.com graph.windows.net

Hey all, looking for some advice. Environment : HIGH SCHOOL - Computing Students Network : Win 2K/2K3 Hosts: Win XP with Visual Studio 2010 Students can code a module, and run it with the debugger, and it works fine (when it has not yet been saved). As soon as you save the project, trying to run it from the debug command, or launching the built executable generates the Software Restriction Policy block. We can't take out .EXE from the Software restriction policy because that would cause free-for-all, and we can't realistically specify a single filename.exe as that would count on sutdents saving the project with the exact filename, and also would open up possibility for students understanding that filename.exe is not being blocked, and then renaming other applications we are trying to be blocked from running. I would assume there is someway to run code from the debugger that compiles the code inside it's own kind of virtual environment, free from policy settings. Does anyone know if there is a sensible way round this? I may be looking over something blatently obvious. Any contributions greatly appreciated. Regards Neil

Hi all, It's been a very long time since this was asked of us and it then it was dropped due lack of interest. It's come full circle now and they want to use Visual Studio and the only way will look at it is through a VM. What I really could do with knowing is how to package (msi) a ready-to-go VM with OS (XP - to keep it light) and any other software they need. Has anyone accomplished this recently (save having to re-invent the wheel). Any guidance much appreciated. Thanks Manny

I have successfully established a tcp/ip connection between my raspberry pi (server) and my windows pc (client). I want a live video streaming via netcat (the similar command which we use in the raspberry command window like raspivid -t 20000 -o - | nc 172.16.26.32 5001 ) AFTER the tcp connection betweeen the two devices is established. On the server (Raspberry Pi) I am using Geany- a simple c++ compiler to write my code. On the client side (windows PC), I have to receive the video and display it using openCV. my thought process was 1. use netcat for a finite time (eg: 20 seconds) and save it in a tcp ip buffer. Later, transfer that buffer to the client via TCP-IP. 2. Follow the above procedure in a loop until i get a keypress. My question is: 1. How do i include the raspivid libraries on the server side code. 2. How do i include the netcat libraries on pc and raspberry (On pc i am using visual studio 2012 ) What I have tried: Initally i tried to write the netcat function in the c++ code the server side. But it didnt work as i didnt know which libraries should be included.

I'm configuring an automated Visual Studio 2017 Community Ed installation for Visual Basic desktop application development. Works fine, except I only get UWP ("Universal / Modern application") as a option when creating new projects. Which extra workflows do I need to install to enable desktop application development for systems other than Windows 10? Alternatively, has anyone had any issues with just installing the whole thing? Only installed workflows are currently "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop" and "Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.Universal Current respone.json, in case anyone else is looking to deploy. Build using guidance from Microsoft Docs {"installChannelUri":".\\ChannelManifest.json","channelUri":"https://aka.ms/vs/15/release/channel","installCatalogUri":".\\Catalog.json","channelId":"VisualStudio.15.Release","productId":"Microsoft.VisualStudio.Product.Community","installPath": "C:\\Program Files\\VisualStudio 2017 Community Edition","quiet": false,"passive": false,"includeRecommended": true,"norestart": true,"addProductLang": "en-US","add": ["Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.NativeDesktop","Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.Universal"]} Edit: Solution was to install ".Net Desktop Development" (Microsoft.VisualStudio.Workload.ManagedDesktop)
