Hi All, Trying to just get some info before I give this a go my self as it could be a huge waste of time. Can you have Mac OS running VirtualBox or similar, with a Windows 10 VM on which is a domain pc with direct access, will it work? My reasoning for looking into this is with GDPR coming in and everything portable needing encrypting on our network, FileVault sorts out the mac side but i'm struggling to bitlocker the windows side too without breaking the mac side. Second question leading on from that would actually be, can you have mac with bootcamp'ed Windows 10 with filevault and bitlocker both running? Thanks Ross

Hey guys! I'm back in the forums asking more dummy questions I'm trying to install virtualbox via sccm. I've managed to extract the msi, and I have ran the msi with both quiet and passive switches, but the program keeps failing to install! Does anyone have virtualbox in sccm currently and, if so, can you save me from this hell of not being able to deploy it? Thank you so much <3

Hi folks, I was wondering what other schools are using to run A-Level Computing and/or Programming courses. We have been teaching it for three years now, but the teacher running it still hasn't decided what software they need for it to be completely successful. I've asked numerous times what software they require, but they just respond 'I don't know, programming and code don't really interest me to be honest'. An odd response from someone supposed to be teaching the thing, but enough of my moaning. What I have set up is: Windows 7 hosts computers, on the network with all the usual group policy restrictions in place. VirtualBox installed on each PC with a Windows 7 VM configured. The VMs are not connected to the internet or the school network, they have their network cards disabled, but students log on to Windows with admin accounts. Installed on the VirtualBox VMs are .net framework, C# developer and python. If a student does anything untoward on one of the VMs or installs anything they shouldn't, we just delete the VM and copy over a fresh one for them. The problem I have got is that our students want to use Visual Studio to put a nice front end on things. Whilst I can install it for them, it requires connectivity to the internet in order to launch each time. Given that these VM's are unrestricted, so that students can create and run their own code and batch files etc, the last thing I want to do is join them to my network or allow them out onto the internet. Does anyone have any suggestions or decent free alternatives to Visual Studio? thanks in advance.

Hello I am trying to set up a virtual RM CC4 machine on an apple mac in VirtualBox. This is my first few steps into the virtualised world. I have tried making an XP VM and then pxe booting it but its having none of it. Has anyone done this before? Have any guidance on how to do it? or possibly a guide? Is it possible to pxe boot a virtual machine from a physical RM network? I have looked at the physical to virtual tools but it takes an age to make an image. Is there a better way? Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys, I'm trying to remove the hardware from the equation when imaging client PC's; like we do with server VM's these days. Has anyone tested the idea of virtualizing client pc's like we do servers? It would save time with image updating/creating across multi-platforms etc. Just not sure if the client/students would see or feel a noticeable performance decrease using a VM'd xp/win7 vs the a normal install? It also would save a huge amount of time when you do your hardware upgrades. Thoughts?

I need to install some kind of Virtualization software on my home computer (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) primarily for testing Server 2008, Linux ISO's, etc. VMWare Player and Virtualbox seem to be the names that keep on cropping up as recommendations. Any others (or thoughts on which of the 2 above would be more suitable)? TIA

Hi all, It's been a very long time since this was asked of us and it then it was dropped due lack of interest. It's come full circle now and they want to use Visual Studio and the only way will look at it is through a VM. What I really could do with knowing is how to package (msi) a ready-to-go VM with OS (XP - to keep it light) and any other software they need. Has anyone accomplished this recently (save having to re-invent the wheel). Any guidance much appreciated. Thanks Manny

Hello I would like to have virtualbox installed on our system so that Linux can be used by students(Ubuntu version). Is it possible to do this without giving students access to the c drive? Any feedback would be useful. Thanks.

We have been using Virtualbox to provide an XP VM for computing lessons and it's been working brilliantly. I've created a new VM to provide VS 2012 and a few other programs on a Win7 VM. This time Virtualbox doesn't seem to be immutable even when the GUI reports that it is. The only workaround I have found is to create a snapshot and push that out with the VM. The VM seems to boot from that everytime making it act like an immutable drive. It's a massive bellyache and I'd rather fix the root problem. Does anyone know what I've done to mess up immutable drives? I used VBox 4.3.12 r93733 to make the VMs and the classroom machines are using 4.3.10 r93012. I'n my research people had this issue with 3.2 but it was working for my XP VM in 4.x.

Morning All, I've looked just about everywhere on the internet and can't find a good answer for this - im hoping some of you guys will have the know how to help. Its a problem I can't seem to a) get my head around and b) might be lacking certain knowledge or skills (<----much more likely!) The school currently has council provided broadband and content filtering, which is pretty much the de facto standard in most places. One school I work with has BT inifinity coming in on an independant line, only currently used by one person (They are aware its totally unfiltered, there is no access from children) The coucil cannot, or will not, upgrade the current 1mbps line shared by the whole school to infinity (about 60mb) so i've been tasked with finding an 'economical' way to sort this out. I wanted to set it up so that the council internet can still be access via "council-proxy" and our internet access by "BT-Infinity" proxy - and the two to be switched as and when required. At my disposal is a dedicated server running 250GB SAS 10.2k drives with 12MB of Ram and Xeon 2.2 Quad processor, so in terms of bottlenecks we should be ok. It runs Windows Server 2008R2 standard. Currently, the BT Homehub is running on 192.168.1.254 (The standard) and the internal network, 10.x.x.x. Both connections run through this server - they are not bridged. I have virtualbox setup with ubunutu server, running dansguardian and squid. Squid effectivily runs on port 3128 and points to dans guardian on 8080. I am using 'freeproxy' on windows server, to direct traffic from the internal NIC (Static) 10.x.x.x to *Any* Dans guardian works from a loopback address on the virtualbox flawlessly From the machines on the 10.x.x.x network, if they use the proxy for this server - sometimes dansguardian blocks the site, other times it doesnt. I imagine this is because of FreeProxy pointing to *any* means it sometimes gets through to the HomeHub running on ~1.254 One problem is virtual box sets the linux machine an IP of 192.168.1.26 as a bridged adaptor, and FreeProxy must bind to an IP address on the host server, that would be ~1.25 - there is no option to freely specify ~1.26 I should mention as well, I am hoping to get away with not purchasing anything other than the HomeHub and have the server do the legwork - but it is limited as to which configurations it will allow....you can't even set DNS?????? I purposely havent set up iptables yet as I wanted to get it working correctly on Dansguardian first. Does anyone have any idea's how to achieve this? - should I be setting up squid on the linux server as a proxy and leave the proxy out of Windows altogether? I feel like im missing a trick. My knowledge of Linux isn't brilliant either, so please be gentle Apologises for the long introduction and many thanks in advance for any advice you might have Thanks Chris
