1. Afternoon Guys, Got yet another issue with DPM. working with DPM 2012r2 and im trying to backup an exchange 2013 server as a VM. It creates the initial replica then it tries to do the first sync and i immediately get this error. An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Call context cannot be accessed after call completed (0x80010117) Ive googled this and have had pretty much no luck at all, the call context cannot be accessed part of the error seems to be a generic error that covers a wide variety of issues, just wondered if anyone has come across this error before with DPM Ive checked the event viewer and there are no errors logged related to this, unless im looking in the wrong place? im checking the application logs and asking DPM to publish alerts to EV just tells me the same error that DPM is showing any help would be greatly appreciated -Vicky Tofield IT technician for The Hatton Academies Trust
2. Hey guys So we use System Center (damn American spelling) 2012 DPM to do our tape backups. I have installed this on a new server and everything is going well until I try and protect a machine. When expanding the disks DPM throws an error stating that; DPM cannot access mount points under the path NO_PARAM because the SYSTEM account has been denied permission. (ID:6012). Now, the path NO_PARAM..... what? It dosent make any sense and no amount of googling has brought me any joy. The error details tell me to grant SYSTEM access to allow list folder contents and read for items in the specified path. SYSTEM has access to the entire disk by default. This happens on all servers and is preventing the use of the software. I'm thinking that there must be a GPO or something which is being applied which would deny SYSTEM access to the local drives, I cannot for the life of me think what setting this might be and was wondering if anyone has come across this before?
3. Hi guys, Been having a lot of issues with our DPM server. Basically i had Microsoft support remote on to take a look at a separate issue. The tech emptied the temp folder which removed the MTA folder. I had no idea this folder was in there until i got back into work from the weekend to see all the tape backups had failed. After a quick Google search i found out this MTA folder is needed during tape backups so re created it and the tape backups ran. Now im getting the following warning. The backup tape job completed, but the catalog was not built correctly for although no data was lost, you must rebuild the catalog to access the data of the backup job (ID 3312) file copy failed due to an I/O error. Source location:\\\MTATempStore$\file.mbc Destination location: C:\program files\microsoft system center 2012 r2\DPM\DPM\Temp\file.mbc The network name cannot be found. Ive looked at the active shares on the server and it turns out the MTATempStore$ share is missing. Does anyone know how i recreate this share and what permissions i need to use, or if this is even the issue, anyone seen this before? -Vicky It Technician Sir Christopher Hatton Academy
4. Hi guys! We are looking to upgrade our current instance of DPM to the latest version of 2016. We will also be upgrading the OS. Just wondered if anyone out there has performed this upgrade yet, how did it go, what sort of issues did you come across. More importantly we are looking at the way that the new version of DPM handles storage. From what ive read you can create volumes now. Ive found information on creating new protection groups but how does it handle the exisiting replicas on disk that are using the older file system Vicky IT Technician Hatton academies trust
5. Hi Guys yet another random DPM issue. Everything was working fine two days ago, nothing has changed im just suddenly getting the following problem. Setup is SQL 2012 on Server 2016 with DPM 2016 Im trying to add a server to an existing protection group, i get to the end of the "wizard" click on update and get the followingthe console then restarts and the server i "added" is not there. Ive checked and all the services its moaning about and they are all running i go into event viewer and have the following error: Log Name: Application Source: MSDPM Date: 31/08/2017 09:58:52 Event ID: 999 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: COOPER.hatton.internal Description: The description for Event ID 999 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. 6. Hi guys, we have just set up a DPM 2012r2 server at one of the sites in our trust, what i would like to do is have all DPMs alerts come to my inbox at the primary site, but im not sure how to setup alerts for a remote DPM server... Just wondered what methods if any you guys have come up with thanks Vicky IT Tech Hatton Academies Trust
7. Hi guys Not sure if this is a DPM issue per se, i assume it must be as this is a test restore im having an issue with, the actual server itself is up and running. So ive restored the VM, started it up, it shows the windows logo with the swirly dots, does that for about 30 seconds then i get a black screen. At random times a window will appear, sometimes its just the border, sometimes its the full window but its empty, occasionally i actually get an error message, it stays onscreen just long enough for me to read "sign in process intialization error, see event log for details" Googling just keeps pointing me to Windows 7, saying things like boot to safe mode, last known config, i cant do anything with this server, a restart hasnt helped. Ive tried two different restore dates now one from disk and one from tape, has anyone else had this problem restoring a VM using DPM Server version is 2012 r2 Vicky Tofield IT Tech Sir Christopher Hatton Academy
8. Hi, I've setup Data Protection Manger 2010 for our Backups, since Backup Exec was becoming expensive to maintain. Most Servers backup OK but a few always have problems with the cookies folder in the user profile. - This normally just results in a warning. but.. There is an server with redirected profiles on it, (More cookies than Cookie Monster could eat) so DPM reaches the 100 failed files limit and "the replica is inconsistent" error. An error line from the failedfileslog.txt is: 0x80070005 \\?\Volume{d1d45b15-30e3-11df-8924-00137267215c}\Profiles\Admin\Cookies\admin@hitbox[11].txt I know I could add these as exceptions but that's a lot of work. I don't understand why it can backup all other parts of a profile, but gets stuck on small txt files. Is there an easy fix? Mmmm, all that talk of cookies has made me hungry
9. Hi guys, im looking into possibly virtualizing our DPM server. We currently have a physical 2016 server hosting DPM 2016 with SQL 2012r2. (we upgraded from DPM 2012r2 to 2016) We have 2 Powervault MD1200s attached for the storage and a Powervault 124T for the tapes. Has anyone got their DPM setup virtualized and if so, could let me know how they did it or point me in the direction of any guides. What are the advantages/disadvantages of having DPM as a virtual machine Thank you! -Vicky Tofield IT service desk supervisor Hatton Academies Trust
10. Hi Guys, just wondered if anyone has come across this before. Im running DPM 2012r2, everything is set up and working, ie protection groups are set up and succesfully backing up my servers, no critical errors. The next step is to set up the notifications and this is where im having issues. So i go to options, i enter my SMTP details and enter an email address to send the test email too. Click send test email and get the following error Connection to the DPM service has been lost. Review the application event log for information about a possible service shutdown. Verify that the following services are not disabled: DPM DPM Replication Agent SQLAgent$mssqlserver MSSQL$mssqlserver Virtual Disk Service Volume Shadow Copy ID: 917 I have checked the services and they are all running. 11. Hi Guys, Hope you can give me some much needed help! Having issues with DPM 2012r2. Im trying to back up a virtual machine but have suddenly starting getting the following error DPM failed to communicate with the protection agent on because access is denied. (ID 42 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005)) Ive googled the issue but i keep getting resolutions for servers in a non trusted domain scenario, my servers are on the same domain. i followed this link and have made sure the account DPM is using is a member of the appropriate security groups DPM failed to communicate with the protection agent but still getting the same error, it was working fine which is the confusing thing, this error only occurred last week, nothing has changed on the server, no windows updates have been installed. any ideas? 12. Hi. We've recently installed DPM 2010 (trialing at the moment) on our new network to provide us with the backup solution. At the moment, I've installed the agent on our two file servers and think its great so far. It backs up to an iSCSI disk on another physical server running FREENAS. It all seems to work fine except several times a day, under 'Management' > Agents it shows unavailable and I get the following emails: "DPM failed to communicate with fileserv1.domain because the computer is unreachable. " "The protection agent operation failed because it could not communicate with fileserv1.domain" I have turned off firewalls on both the DPM server and the clients I am backing up. Sometimes if i right click on the agent and click refresh information, it changes to 'OK'. Which means our backups aren't guaranteed and some synchronizations do not occur. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
13. We've just noticed that on selected servers our backup jobs are not running according to the schedule we have set. They appear to be around 30 minutes earlier or later than specified. For example: I have 4 DCs in 1 protection group set to backup the system state at 11:30pm everyday. The jobs are actually running at 12:00am the following day I have 2 seperate volumes of the same fileserver set to back up which should run at 7am, 11am and 4pm. One of the volumes is running this schedule while the other is running 6:30am, 11am, 4pm. They are in the same protection group. Here are some screenshots showing the discrepancy: 1: From the monitoring tab cleary shows the job started at 7:04:11 am - http://i55.tinypic.com/k3ocl.jpg 2: From the recovery tab showing that the only 3 points for 7th Jan are 6:28am, 11:02am and 4:01pm - http://i52.tinypic.com/jjl0ee.png The situation for the DCs is the same, monitoring tab shows the scheduled start time, recovery tab shows a different time. The DCs in question run W2K8 SP2 and the fileserver W2K3 R2 SP2. We are running DPM2010 and the agent versions are 3.0.7706.0 Any ideas why the jobs are running like this? Cheers Adam.
14. Hi guys current setup server 2012r2, SQL 2012 and DPM 2012r2 Trying to upgrade to DPM 2016 and getting the following error You cannot upgrade the existing installation because the DPM database version does not match with installed DPM version. Ensure correct SQL data files are copied from an existing DPM SQL instance and attached to the given SQL instance, then run the program again In the past ive had to restore the database from our secondary DPM server so im guessing that has something to do with it maybe? ive no idea what SQL data files its on about either Any help would be greatly appreciated! and if you need any further info let me know! regards -vicky Tofield IT Tech at Sir Christopher Hatton
15. Hi Guys having a fun time trying to upgrade DPM from 2012r2 to 2016. First attempt failed so i restored the database from our secondary DPM server and ran DPMsync. All back to normal for round two. Now when i try to run the upgrade again im getting the following error Ive got no clue where to even start with this and its driving me crazy. Has anyone managed to successfully upgrade from DPM 2012r2 to 2016? help! Vicky Tofield IT Technician Sir Christopher Hatton Academy
16. Hi guys, hope someone can help Every time i go to view a report in DPM 2012 i get an error saying that the mmc has stopped working. after looking in event viewer i can see that I'm getting an application error, event ID 999 (see below) The description for Event ID 999 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. I check once a week and last week i could view reports without problems, so I'm just a bit stumped as to why all of a sudden I'm getting this error, nothings been changed on the server. just wondered if anyone has come across this error before thanks in advance and if anyone needs anymore information let me know Vicky Tofield IT Technician Sir Christopher Hatton Academy
17. Evening All, Having a few issues with DPM at the moment backing up servers. I currently have two servers that no matter what I try or do always have a inconsistent replica on their D drive. Its starting to make me go crazy as we moved from Backup Exec to this thinking it would be an upgrade and a darn lot cheaper with also getting the whole system centre suite for the same cost. Both servers are 2012 R2 except DPM server on 2016 and have the latest agent installed along with windows backup. All of the VSS Writers never error and when I run a manual backup on the server with wbadmin from command prompt it all works fine. Their coming up after a consistency check stating it has completed with an unexpected error of the following: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Cannot create a file when that file already exists (0x800700B7)) I've googled and googled and fine no one with this issue nor a solution. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ashley
18. Hello All, Im looking at SCDPM as its part of our VL with MS and thinking of doing this deployment; The HCI and synology are already deployed. This thread is more asking is this a suitable setup for DPM 2019. I have tried to use iSCSI in the past and that had always corrupted the disk on the synology so i am a bit hesitant trying DPM out again but this time doing it correctly. I look forward to your advice and ideas. thanks
19. Hi, Currently using a combination of DPM 2012 R2 (Windows 2008 R2 Storage Server) for short-term backups and to (ageing) Dell LTO4 TL2000 Tape Library for long-term backups (D2D2T); and I need to review/upgrade this solution; both due to warranty implications and additional storage is required (more so for DPM2012 R2 on a Dell NX31000 appliance). A potential (D2D2D) solution being contemplated is to procure 2x DELL DR4100 appliances; each one would replace the current roles of NX3100 (short-term) and the TL2000 (long-term); and we would then build a VM based DPM2012 R2 on Server 2012 R2 platform (so that DeDuplication can also be utilised for greater data storage efficiency) and this would the free up the NX3100 to be reconfigured as additional NAS data/storage space in general. The 2nd DR4100 (long-term) could then be relocated elsewhere in relation to DR. An alternative thought would be to utilise Microsoft Azure (as that works with DPM2012 R2) for long-term backups; and continue to use our NX3100 as the DPM2012 R2 Server; or indeed build a VM based DPM2012 R2 Server and utilise the same disk pool on the NX3100. Ideally, I would like to review (and cost) every option, as like most schools at the moment, our budget has been significantly reduced this year so all the more pressure to ensure that all solutions are covered; along with their potential costs. I am interested in (feedback/advice from) anyone else who has started to use Microsoft Azure/Cloud Based services for their full (off-site / long-term) school backups? and what things we should ensure that it adheres too? (guidelines, policies etc.) as I am thinking that it would be one less bit of physical kit to manage/look after combined with not having to worry about upgrading/replacing the equipment every 3-5 years or so. I've found some Microsoft websites that give some indicative costs; combined with using a PS Script that 'claims' to calculate space required for 30 days of data based on current Protection Groups within DPM2012 R2 but it is still a bit unclear to be honest; especially in how we ensure/calculate that there's enough space for monthly/yearly long-term data retention. Maybe we have to work with a Microsoft OVS-ES reseller? to ensure we get discounted education pricing? Thank you. NB. Currently use RedStor for SIMS backups only; in keeping with our LEA's SIMS Support Team guidance.
20. Hi guys, I have DPM 2012 set up at one of our primary schools, what Id like to do is get the tape management report set up so once a week I get a report about their overdue tapes. what I've done so far is navigate to the SQL server reporting services via internet explorer http://server/reports clicked on the DPMReporterDataSource page Ive checked the credentials stored securely in the report server entered the account I want to use and checked Use as windows credentials when connecting to the data source Then I click test connection it fails with the following error

The permissions granted to user 'VICTORIA\dpmadmin' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) Get Online Help

http://flanders/Reports/images/blank.gif

dpmadmin is the account I am logged onto the server with, so obviously there is a permissions issue somewhere, but I have no idea where to look, I feel like Im missing something obvious, but ive no idea what! ive looked in the SQL server management studio at things like the security tab of report server and what users are in there, but I don't know if im looking in the right place with that? ive looked at the DPM admin groups via compmgmt but I don't think that's where the problem is im very new to DPM so im a little lost, any help would be greatly appreciated, if anyone needs any more information just let me know thank you! -Vicky Tofield IT service desk supervisor for the Hatton Academies trust
21. Hi all, I was wondering what you guys use as your backup system? Are people still using tape or just HDD? Are you still running the software based systems or have you moved over to appliance/cloud solutions? What would you recommend? We're currently using Microsoft DPM2012, and to be frank... it's a royal pain in the backside! The great bit is that staff and students can perform self restores (not that they actually do that as they still keep coming to me) and the use of previous versions is very handy as well. But surely there are other "better" products out that which is more reliable than this product. Can you run (on the same server) DPM 2012 for the self restores/previous versions and run something else to do full backups at the same time? Or is there just a better product out there that can do it all? Thanks
