I’d like to know about other schools’ experiences migrating from on-premise file storage to OneDrive/SharePoint. Did you move to OneDrive user profiles? How do your user profiles work? Are they 100% cloud only? Currently we store on a NAS (all the usual file server features) and folder redirection. How do you handle the key Downloads/Pictures/Music? For those with apps like Adobe/Unity, anything to be aware of? Currently on AD/domain-joined so not Intune joined just yet. I am in the position to trial this with a small set of users, which will also tie in with an Intune migration eventually. Thanks.

Hello everyone, I have an interesting issue that I cannot work out for the life of me! I have the following folder setup on one of my file servers for user's home drives: \\SERVER-01\Users\%USERNAME% I have also got DFS replication between this file server and another for these home drives with the following path: \\DOMAIN\Data\Users\%USERNAME% My problem is that if I setup an auto apply quota on the parent folder for the home drives (Users), the quota does not get applied to each of the folders. This happens when both mapping to \\SERVER-01\Users\%USERNAME% as well as mapping to \\DOMAIN\Data\Users\%USERNAME% I have other shares that I replicate using DFS and they have quotas such as: \\SERVER-01\Apps - \\DOMAIN\Data\Apps and the quota for this share is working as it should. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Jonathan Worth.

Hi there, I just wanted to get other peoples thoughts on the best way to implement a file server solution that allows HA. Currently we have a Dell Equallogic SAN which we will be using for storage and what I was thinking was to use Server 2012 as a means of presenting that storage to the users on the network. The 2 ways I see that I could possibly do this is to either make 2 X virtual 2012 servers in a cluster which will then connect via iSCSI to the SAN. Then use Classic File share with continuous availability. However all of my client pc's that will be connecting to this share are Windows 7 for the foreseeable future and from what I read if a client was performing a large file transfer when one of the nodes goes down then they get an error about the location no longer existing. While this is not likely to happen every day (the large transfers I mean) it does occasionally happen between certain departments. Or my other thought on this to have those server 2012's running with Network load balance IP between them with an appropriate record pointing to said IP that would be the new file server name that we use. But I am not sure if this may cause conflicts with both servers being connected to the SAN and if say one user was load balanced to one server and accessed the same data that another user would be using while connected through the other server. Any advice that you could offer regarding this would be appreciated.

Hi guys and gals, I'm setting up a new Virtual File Server to take over from an aging Physical. At the moment, all the data is on one drive (D:), and (badly) split up into folders/shares etc. At a previous school I've had two VHDs one for Pupils and one for Staff and had Homedrives and Pupil/StaffShares on each. I was wondering what you guys do? Do you have one big VHD (ours would be around 2TB, and carve it up just with folders and use FSRM to set Quotas and rules etc, or would you have separate VHDs, and if so, would you have a separate VHD as above, or go further one for each main share? Approx Sizes Staff Home - 540GB Staff Share - 815GB Pupil Home - 190GB Pupil Share - 280GB

Hello I have a file server on 2012 r2 which needs to be upgraded so I decided to attach the storage drive to a 2016 server and re setup the GPOs and shares on the network. Unfortunately for some reason when you a user goes into their own network share (\\fileserver\staffhome\%USERNAME%) they are unable to rename files already created before it was moved. The error comes up "An unexpected error is keeping you from renaming the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with his problem. Error 0x80070780: The file cannot be accessed by the system" Am I missing something? Thanks

Hi All, We have just virtualized our file server using Hyper v and all seemed to be running well. We currently have an issue with the servers CPU is currently running up and down all of the time. See the image below. The process using this is "System" . Lately the server has started to drop its connection to users and when it does the CPU idles at 0% - 2%. It brings itself back online again in around 30 seconds. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks

Hi We are looking to migrate the file server to a new server. I am planning to use robocopy but they are so many commands, could somebody point me what switches I need to copy all files and take permissions with them. The plan is to move the files and run again to to copy everything that has changed. Thanks in advance

Hey Guys Really hoping you can help me, I did call up county but that was a week ago and they still can't help me! Basically I have a file server which has the Staff's home drive, Pupil's home drive, Staff share and Pupil share on it. These are all mapped from my Domain Controller server using Group Policy. When teachers are using their laptops and the laptops go to sleep the laptops drop connection from the server for a few seconds and loose connection to all the mapped drives. Once the wifi reconnects itself they all reconnect again no problem. Except for the staff share which to enable to reconnect you must full restart your machine. I can't understand why this is really hoping you guys could shed some light on this as a lot of staff are getting annoyed about this! Thanks Alex

We have set up a cluster file server on 2 blades running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I can access the file shares on the cluster using the cluster name, eg \\clustername\share, but I am unable to access them via the cluster's IP address, eg \\x.x.x.x\share. Does anyone know how to resolve this?? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi All, Been watching these forums for a while but this is my first post, please go easy I think I'm possibly being paranoid but let's see what you all think. I work for a company who primarily look after a bunch of primary schools and my job is to visit each of these reguarly for maintenance visits. What I'm seeing is more and more teachers coming away from using their USB sticks and instead using google docs and office live for document storage. Apart from pictures, office type documents make up the majority of files stored on the servers. Projecting 5 years or so into the future - is the future for local file servers in our schools bleak? I'd like at some point to move to a role in a secondary or college. Currently in our Primary schools we don't use Exchange or Sharepoint etc but I guess secondaries and colleges would. With the future looking more and more cloud based, are Micro$haft Online Services and the like taking the bread and butter away from our jobs? Please tell me I'm just being paranoid.

installing a server for the first time. Have windows server 2019 installd. I cannot get the network set up. and I want to run repetier server on this and also have a file server on it. what do I need for that.

Afternoon everyone, I know there a lots of threads on here relating to this issue, and even on the internet. We have just moved all user home drives to a new file server and now all the user folders are showing as my documents rather than the username. We had a fix for this on our old file server, and that was by using the FSRM to file screen all desktop.ini files. Now the file screen policy worked a charm on the old file server, but re-creating the policy on the new file server doesn't do anything. We have set out the policy but unfortunately the folders are still showing as my documents. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Regards Harry

I am migrating staff file servers and want to make sure that I get the NTFS permissions right first time as I have experienced in the past that it can be very messy and difficult to fix it later. The file server will host Home folders, shared folders, profiles, desktops, downloads and settings(for redirected favorites, links, searches and start menu) and will be located in the main folder ‘Staff’. These are shared and mapped via active directory using DFS paths. So the UNCs look like this: \\Domain\Staff\HomeFolders\%username%\ \\Domain\Staff\DesktopFolders\%username%\ \\Domain\Staff\DownloadsFolders\%username%\ \\Domain\Staff\Settings\%username%\ \\Domain\Staff\Profiles\%username%\ \\Domain\Staff\SharedFolders\ This is what I am trying to achieve: First of all, I would like to make the desktop folder read only so no one can save to the desktop. I would like to prevent all the users from changing the permissions and sharing the folders if folders if possible. The users should not be able to take ownership either. Not sure if there is any way to do this but I would also like to prevent them from putting the files directly in their home folders. I have created folders under SharedFolders for different departments and would like to prevent users from modifying the names of these or creating new folders in SharedFolders. The documents folder and settings will be redirected so I need to know the permissions for these parent folders. I have created a spreadsheet detailing all the folders, groups and permissions which I am sharing here. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1K4PrCLboDcVKhnfKiWbvypExGQVcgjT6K9EBRAv6gHc/edit?usp=sharing Also, do I need to go to advanced permissions to achieve this or the six standard permissions will work fine? Moreover, should I be creating new ACL groups as per MS recommendations or the existing groups should serve the purpose? I am having hard time trying to work out what NTFS permissions I need to assign to which groups for different types of folders. I will really appreciate if people can assist me with these. I am open to all suggestions and would like to know if there are any other recommendations to avoid any problems later.

Hi All, I have just built a SCVMM server based on two hyper-v nodes in a failover cluster environment. So far it is looking great: - 2 hyper-v hosts - 8 NICS on each host 3 iscsi dedicated, hyper v network team, management nic team - shared ISCSI storage We will be migrating the existing VMs from vsphere that already use the iscsi shared storage. We want to create some file servers VMs in VMM but just deciding the best setup for the following: 1100 users no more than 500 concurrent. How many fileservers would be appropriate to access one or more file stores? We have 1 TB of shared storage currently available and We will have another 1TB off shared storage once we start migrating the existing fileservers and vm's.

Hi guys, I am about to receive a new Dell T330 16GB - (x4) 600GB SAS 10k RAID 10, so 1.2TB for OS (HyperVisor Type 1) and Data. My idea is install Windows Server 2016, add Hyper-V role (which is Type 1 as far as I know) and create a VM with Windows Server 2016 running as a File Server. This VM will be Backed up on a NAS. This FS will be a Member Server on my domain, it will be my sole VM, I have 2 DCs, AntiVirus and WSUS, running on Server 2008 R2 no virtualized. Am I doing this move right? Thanks.
