We have installed Sharepoint 2010 Server edition to handle document and image libraries. We also are running mixed Mac and Windows clients, all authenticated via AD. Faculty are accustomed to saving vast quantities of photos on Windows file shares in the past. This became untenable and users would not adhere to reasonable quotas particularly with photos. Sharepoint was attractive because of browser based cross-platform support both on campus and on, especially with Office 2011 installed. Anyhow, we have been unable to come up with any control for file sizes, besides the single max file size option in Sharepoint [default= 50 MB]. We really want to set max file sizes by type, max number of files in folder. For example, one user last year uploaded 730 photos into a single public folder. So we don't want that kind of scenario to repeat itself. User education is fine, and so are over-all quota [ie. 10 GB per faculty member] but we want also get at huge numbers or inappropriately sized files by type. Anybody find a plug in that helped with this. Sharepoint is our only alternative. We are committed to it, so other options are not on the table. SMB shares on Windows shares for Mac clients are pretty unbearable in terms of speed, so this drove us to Sharepoint was well. Any tips or solutions on setting quotas in Sharepoint would be greatly appreciated.

We have integrated a hundred Macs into our network. When ever a Mac tries to read a directory on a Windows 2003 R2 file share or Windows 2008, it takes an inordinate amount of time. Even listing a simple sub-directory with just 3 1K files in it can take upwards of a minute. Now we installed an afp file share and speed is dramatically faster under exact same testing conditions. But of course we are a Windows and Linux shop running AD. And even if we bought three or four Mac Pros and set up afp file shares, we'd have no way to manage them. This problem of slow smb directory and file listing is driving us crazy. We have tested for months, replaced a core switch, tested and replaced cables, new N AP. All work perfectly with Windows client. No delays etc. Even simultaneously with Macs and Windows laptops, Windows machines are fine. Any suggestions, we are going crazy?

Our engineering department is commissioning their own IP switched network to build a parallel network around the entire campus. This switched network will have it's own core switch, access layer switches, the whole ball of wax. 80 cameras. Total throughput expected around 320 MB We have our own network with fibre backbone access layer switches scattered around campus and a Cisco 6509 core switch that the school was hoodwinked into buying in 2007. Our 6509 has a 32 GB engine. Core is running at 3% of CPU capacity and total network throughput on the core switch is roughly 1% of the 32 GB capacity. I cannot understand why engineering doesn't use our existing network as we have massive capacity to spare and a top notch backbone to go with it. We are switching to gigabit. The engineering dept. wants to put in their own megabit CAT 5 backbone. All this just confounds me. Does your school have the CCTV integrated into your network? Thanks for any input. Bob
