We have like many, procured our summer allocation of computers (Dell Optiplex 760 Small Form), they turned up yesterday, we un-boxed them and set them up in our imaging lab. We had 20 on a session and that's when hell was realised! Image just one (forced multicasting for the test) and we get a solid 690MB/Min on ghost 8.2 Image two or more and we get 2-6MB/Min, now we tried this on both multicast & unicast! We tried a few different specs of computers two hpdc5100 on the same cables produced 600+MB/Min, Even the Steps taken so far. Downloaded the latest packet drivers from Intel for the nic in the machine, this yielded no difference at all. Tried them on their own switch with fresh cables, no wimpy switch either, Cisco 2960G, still no joy. Our last solution is not ideal, but we will put the hard drives in to other computers and image. Dare i ask if anyone else has seen such problems before? It feels to me like a faulty network card driver/firmware

1000Mbit of internet here Classcharts and Parentmail (and a number of other sites) will offer print previews, or reports as a downloadable PDF. The issue I'm having is that when you go to download one using MS Edge it'll open a new tab, pause for 15-20 seconds then close the tab and the download is available. Using Firefox (on my test PC only) the download will open the download dialog instantly. (these are tiny PDFs around 100kb) not sure where to start, this seems to be an edge problem but I did disable the antivirus during testing to no change. I allowed popups but this didn't help, turned off enhanced security for the website, no change. Ideas? (other than use Chrome) EDIT Edge will download immediately if I use the save link option.. ((Not always available.))

Hello fellow edugeekers/SIMS frustratees, One of our receptionists has been noticing a significant lag in a few of the modules within SIMs, specifically when she is doing any work on attendance and with some reports. There are no errors thrown up, other parts of SIMS and the computer work fine. This is a recent issue and not a long-standing one with her account/her SIMS installation. Any suggestions?

Hello all, I really hope someone can help me here... Since I started here Policy Central has never worked properly. When I first started, the web based console would constantly throw SQL errors at me when I tried to review reports. This hasn't happened in a while, but what i'm experiencing now is it being really really slow. Some times it appears to load instantly, but sometimes it can take a very long time to get into the web based console. Having to sit there and wait whilst it loads. Anyone got any ideas? Would really appreciate it if someone can help. I have logged a call with Link2ICT, but they dont seem to be too bothered. I have asked for them to remove it from the server and then install it again, but I've been told I'd have to wait for to happen. How hard would it be to do that myself? Though I would rather just try and fix the problem rather than reinstalling. Many thanks.

I have recently been testing Windows 8 and its compatibility with the application suites used in our main ICT rooms - Thankfully no problems there! I have disabled the 'Show first sign-in animation' GPO so that I can see what is going on, besides most of our pupils have new laptops with windows 8 preloaded and know what they are doing. When I domain join one of these suite computers during a users first login I get the following screen This screen stays for a long time - I recorded 5 minutes several times. Entirely by accident one of the students realized that if you press CTRL + ALT + DEL to interrupt the Preparing Computer screen you can then access the desktop immediately. This makes me think that there isn't any vital config going on during this preparing computer stage and it is probably hanging. Has anyone else encountered this? I am not sure what to do about this long login wait. Thanks

Hi, Kind of posted about this yesterday but in the wroong section asking for the wrong advice. Our librarian has, over the last few days, had problems with the font drop down in office - (word, powerpoint and publisher at least - don't think she's tried the others). It juust opens, blank and then crashes the whole program. Takes ages to force close. Nothing else is running at the same time, I have been through and deleted about 90 fonts that were unneccesary (no idea how they got there but the PC has been there about 10 years so someone must've installed them before I worked here). Still the same problem. Not really sure where to go from here, no one else is having this problem to my knowledge. She has 2gb of RAM so more than enough for what she needs. Nothing else has changed on her set up recently. Anyone got any ideas? Really at a loss!

Since migrating our installation of SIMS.net to a new server recently, users have complained of very slow response when loading up the document server. Specifically when clicking Reports > Run Report, there is a delay of exactly 2 minutes 6 seconds before showing the list of reports. During this time, Sims.net application is not responsive. - Tested on server: no delay at all - Tested on three clients: exactly 2m 6s delay on all of them Whilst testing I've done the following: - switched-off on-access scanning (antivirus) on both client and server - ended all non-critical processes / stopped services - run three concurrent file transfers across the network to client using Robocopy to see if this affected this delay - it did not - run Filemon / Procmon to attempt to determine what might be causing this None of the above affect that 2m 6s delay when clicking Reports > Run Report. - Server: Win 2008 Std 32bit - Clients: Win XP SP3 32bit - Sims.net version currently 7.142 (Autumn 2011 I think) This wasn't an issue before I migrated the server installation to my new Win 2008 instance and re-installed doc server. Rather than posting results of my Filemon traces here, can anyone help given the above info? I haven't re-installed Sims.net on the clients yet... Many thanks! Mat

Good Morning everyone, We've had generally slow internet access for ages, which we're sure (following various tests) is a result of something inside school. We do have what I believe to be a strange network/DNS setup (but it may be perfectly normal) so allow me to explain: Our three DCs are normal DNS servers, each replicates etc etc. These are SCS1, SCS2 and SCS3 for the purposes of this thread. They resolve internal DNS fine. However nothing on our LAN has access to the county WAN/ISP feed other than our Censornet proxy server and mail server - these have two NICS, one on each. Thus no DNS request for an external domain will resolve from a workstation. Censornet (linux based) has to have an internal DNS as its first DNS otherwise it fails to identify our workstations via reverse lookup. It does have second and third DNS pointing to County, but being Linux it always tries them in order whereas windows has specific DNS servers per NIC. Thus when the internal domain lookups timed out, Censornet then tried looking to county and immediately got a result and displayed the page. Over christmas, I came up with a plan which seemed logical. I had our server support team install secondary DNS on the mail server (which has LAN and WAN nics). SCS1,2,3 now have a forwarder set so any external domain requests are forwarded immediately to Mail1. Censornet points directly at Mail1, so it can lookup external domains, but also can resolve internal stationnames. Now, first set of questions: a1): Does this seem ok as a DNS setup? a2): Should Mail1 receive updates periodically from SCS1,2,3? There are a couple of stations which don't have PTR records on Mail1 but do on SCS1,2,3 until I tell Mail1 to reload/transfer the zone from master. a3): Which should I be doing - Reload or Transfer - in this situation? a4): Is there something I should check to see why this isn't happening? SCS1,2,3 are set to notify all the NameServers listed, which I understood to mean Mail1 should therefore request an update when it is notified? Secondly, when I set this up at Christmas our internet speeds soured through the roof (as Censornet no longer had to wait for internal DNS to timeout). However they have dwindled to a snails pace over the last two months. Until yesterday evening - I was reloading the zone from master and managed to crash DNS on Mail1, so I restarted the DNS service. I came in this morning and internet access is back to full steam ahead. My thoughts go back to our old ISA server which we had to periodically restart to maintain internet speeds. b1): Why does it appear that I need to restart the DNS service on mail1 periodically to maintain internet access speed? b2): Is there something I can change to stop this happening? I'm happy to schedule it every weekend or suchlike if neccessary but it strikes me as odd. Sorry for the long post - I hope someone can cast some ideas in my direction. TIA, Peter

Hi, I have been having this really annoying issue where the internet seems to drop to an unusable speed say 0.4Mbps. When I do ping tests these either drop out or take an unusually long time. I can still ping the router no problem. Each time this happens i have been going to the router and performing a Cross over test and the speeds are coming back just as they should with no drop in speed and all ping tests are coming back. the router has been replaced two times and upgraded to a Cisco 2800 series; however this issue keeps occurring. I have been onto the main switch and even reset this to its default settings. I also reset the router and this does not improve the speed. any help will be much appreciated as the slow internet is driving me mad! Not to mention all the teachers! Thanks James

We have been experiencing some issues after the database was upgraded by our SIMS support to 2012, they have looked at it a few times and have concluded that the issue is with our network. However I don't see any issues. The issue we are experiencing is that clients connecting to SIMS take minutes to load and is longer than it used to be, however when signing in to SIMS on the local server the load time is much quicker. We are running full version of SQL 2012 on a Windows 2008 R2 server. Is there anything I can do to diagnose this issue and what type of network issues can cause this? Gramzon

We have had a new website developed for us and are in the process of setting it up. It is a PHP based site with MySQL running on a Windows 2008 R2 Server with IIS. Although the website works and can be accessed it is very very very slow to load each page. My thoughts are that it is have trouple connecting efficiently to MySQL however I have very little experience in troubleshooting these issues. The Web Development company we are using are out of ideas. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated - I can PM you the link to the site if needed.

We have integrated a hundred Macs into our network. When ever a Mac tries to read a directory on a Windows 2003 R2 file share or Windows 2008, it takes an inordinate amount of time. Even listing a simple sub-directory with just 3 1K files in it can take upwards of a minute. Now we installed an afp file share and speed is dramatically faster under exact same testing conditions. But of course we are a Windows and Linux shop running AD. And even if we bought three or four Mac Pros and set up afp file shares, we'd have no way to manage them. This problem of slow smb directory and file listing is driving us crazy. We have tested for months, replaced a core switch, tested and replaced cables, new N AP. All work perfectly with Windows client. No delays etc. Even simultaneously with Macs and Windows laptops, Windows machines are fine. Any suggestions, we are going crazy?

Trying to install "AVerTouch Win v1.3.2097.0 (msi)" for an avervision F17+ that the English Dept. purchased without consultation. Anyhow above having to download the drivers at 300kb/s (so 20 minute download) the bloody software keeps faulting out saying I have to be an administrator! Well I am an admin so I suspect another issue.. anyone running this software? (I've tried compatibility and Run AS)

We're having a strange problem with adobe photoshop cs4 when students login and try using it, it runs like a bag of spanners doing anything - like clicking on the file menu takes ages to load before you even get to the point of creating your project When we login its all smooth sailing as it should be on the I5 PC's with 4gb RAM and SSD's Anyone experienced anything similar? How did you resolve

Hi all, I'm dragging up this old thing for discussion again. Firstly, a bit of an explanation. We use HDGuard across 2000 devices, ranging from labs to laptops running on wireless. Because of the sheer size of our campuses, and the number of students that use these devices, it is pretty much a given that we have to use one of these products. We've been a HDGuard user for 7 years, and have always found it great. However, we are all know, there is a noticeable performance hit from running software like that on machines (we tested Deep Freeze and its performance hit was actually worse than HDGuard). So, our issue. Because of HDGuard, obviously our machines never save a profile onto a machine. The impact of this the students still need to build a profile every time they login to a machine, and we enforce a reboot when a student logs off. Also, regardless of whether or not the machine students login to has our full lab image on it (including Autodesk, CS6, Archicad, Office, etc), or just a 'slimmer' version (Office + Basics), the time from boot to desktop can be anywhere between 3-5 minutes. Now, I'm not sure how that compares to other schools, but for us it is unacceptable. This is on brand new hardware, but the issue with this is the disks in the machines are just too slow (5400RPM drives, probably 'green'). Now, when it comes down to it - these are my questions and discussion points: For environments that use HDGuard/DeepFreeze/Similar, what is your typical time for a machine to boot, a user to login, and a usable desktop environment to be up? For environments that don't use HDGuard/DeepFreeze/Simlar, what is your solution to keeping machines clean? Do you schedule imaging? Do you just trust your AV? Do you use Mandatory Profiles, and if so, how does that impact your network when you have 400-500 devices logging in in a period change? How does your WiFi hold up for that? Have you noticed any performance hits? If you do use mandatory profiles, and we have dabbled with that in the past, some software still generally freaks when it tries to do things with the user profile. ArchiCAD is one that comes to mind. How do you deal with that? Anything else to discuss or points to raise? Thanks in advance, Justin

Office 365 slow only on the SWGFL?
chazzy2501 posted a topic in South West Grid for Learning (SWGfL)
I've been using it here at work and thought the website was laggy and slow... Until I used it at home where it was great. I've tried it again this morning and it's slow... So the swgfl or kcom are ballsing something up. it doesn;t seem like a bandwidth problem but a latency issue. I click 7 seconds later something happens. I've tried other workstations same issue! All other websites are fine... Anyone else use 365 and get this issue? -
Hi, We are currently running backup exec with 9 windows servers and 1 mac server. I have setup the remote agent on the mac server using the script and all looks fine, I can browse the server and the crednetials are all working fine. however every morning i come in and the backup is still running. AT 3MB/second! Can anyone shed any light on why this is so slow? One thing worth mentioning is that the mac server doesn't appear under macinstosh resources, I have to browse for it manually within the domain list. Many Thanks, Dan

We've got some Toshiba Z30-A machines, really nippy machines, but are taking an age to image with WDS. Any particular reason this might happen? Only seems to affect this particular machine model.

All.. Could someone with Office 2010 try to open this file? We've moved from 2003 to 2010 (woo!), and the Staff here are having issues with certain Powerpoint slides taking yonks to open. And when they do, it says it's blocking external content - there aren't any external references. Atmosphere – Key Areas no WebText.ppt This is an example. It's a copy/paste of one of the slides. It's a single slide PPT with a picture, and some text. Except 2010 says it has external content - and the external site in question no longer exists. Is there some way of telling 2010 to just behave like 2003, and open the damn thing without (I assume??) checking for hyperlinks being valid? Incidentally - this happens no matter where the PPT is saved - network drive, C: drive etc.. Any help MASSIVELY appreciated!!!

Hi, Has anyone experienced any problems with TT load times on Windows 8? I'm using a Dell Venue 8 (recommended by TT). The program takes 2 mins to load every time. It's not a massive program and runs fine on much lesser machines. It almost seems like it's waiting for something before it will load the program, or something is timing out. I've tried turning the antiviruse off, checked the event logs etc, but nothing. Any ideas or input would be much appreciated! Thanks!
