Hi All, Second attempt to post this, sorry if any double up. Hope someone can help with this issue, i've been banging my head against the wall on this problem. My school has purchased an initial lot of 28 HP mini 5103 netbooks for our classrooms. We've decided to also start deploying Windows7 with these and a the new staff laptops. I've spent the past few weeks setting up the GPO's to prevent unauthorized access to things like the system drive and other network machines, etc. etc. Now when i test it with a student account everything looks great and golden rays beam from behind the machine. Until i remove the network cable and try to log on using the same accounts wirelessly. Then it all junks out on me and the user is logged in with a temp profile with no restrictions. I've tried pinging it at the login screen and receive no replies. it will only make the connection wirelessly after a user logs in. I'm assuming this is the main issue now and my last hurdle. Is there anyway to configure the wireless connection to start pre-logon? I've set the usual computer gpo's to wait for network, attempted setting a roaming profile for my test account, and other attempts that have become a blur of gpupdate and restarts. basic info if needed: Server 2k8 R2 DC Zonedirector 1000 w/ Ruckus AP's HP Mini 5103's running Win 7 Ent. x86 Once this is done, i'm going to get them out to the classrooms. In which time I'm sure I'll have to tackle the random user account docs being renamed to 'Documents' from 'Username'. thats a mystery as well right now cause it doesn't occur every time. many thanks for any and all help!

Hello! We're looking for a cheap laptop charging trolley for 16 - 20 laptops- anyone know the best place / price to get one? They all seem to be pretty expensive...!!

Im testing my chippie skills here but need a bit of help with charging scenario. I have a nice big secure wooden cupboard in the ict suite which is set to be made into somewhere to store and charge 40 netbooks. Now I can easily build all the shelves and make cables nice and tidy but I am unsure about safe charging? There are 2 mains sockets situated just outside the cupboard which I have cut holes to but am unsure about rigging up extension leads preoperly. How could I do this safely (if at all). I was thinking of 2 rcds connected to 2 surge protected extension leads then leading to 5 of these: Belkin Surge Concealed 8 Way Sure Protector - Misco.co.uk Im not sure how the setup works in a proper charging trolley? If anyone has any opinion or ideas that would be great. I will take some pictures of my project for those interested. Thanks in advance

Hi All, I have been having a play about with Chromium OS today. Downloaded from Chromium OS builds by Hexxeh. Booted it up off a memory stick and worked really well . Just wondered if anyone had come across a way of being able to lock the settings down etc, so that the students cant fiddle. I know that at BETT Google were talking about the Chromebooks and being able to centrally manage them form a web interface ... but only if you buy a Chromebook with ChromeOS installed. I was thinking about maybe configuring some memory sticks with Chromium OS, giving them to some of the students on a trial and setting up a room or a suite of our netbooks so that if the Memory Stick is inserted into machine before its switched on it would boot upto that memory stick, that way if its the students personal one it wouldn't matter what settings they enabled/disabled/changed etc. Only thing that I can see wrong is that when ive tried it on a few different machines I have had to put in the WiFi Password and Proxy settings each time. Maybe there is a way around this? Any input would be gratefully received, might turn into an interesting thread ... ?!? Thanks Tom

We've got about 6 Samsung N140 netbooks doing nowt. They have Win 7 on them but they're really sluggish and we need them to be faster- especially with today's demanding requirements for speed and efficiency. Anyone got any ideas what i could do to get them rocking?

Hi all My school wants to see every student with a laptop in lessons. They wanted to start a scheme where the parents pay for this, as the school has no money. The parents have politely declined this, stating (mostly) that their son/daughter already has a laptop at home. SLT’s response to this was to ask me why we can’t allow students to bring their own devices in to school and access the internet (and VLE) through the wireless. I have explained that it is a terrible idea, etc, etc, but I can only come up with a few technical issues with the concept: I know that I can secure the wireless pretty tight, but my concern is the myriad of empty wall sockets across the school allowing access to my un-VLAN’d flat network. MY question is... Does anyone here allow students to use their own personal laptops in school? If so, are there any modifications you make to the laptop or your network? If you don’t currently do this, but were asked, what would you say?

Have just been informed that there are still somewhat amorphous (but needing to be actioned sharpish) plans to buy 60 new machines for the Year R/Year 1 kids at one of my schools. It's leaning towards netbooks mainly on the size/cost factor - they've worked out that when they're that small, lugging around a full size laptop (or even opening the lid!) is a chore. Needless to say the budget remains shrouded in mystery, but has anyone got any recommendations? I see that the Samsung NC10 is highly rated, and should be in what I imagine the budget would be, but it would be nice to have a couple more to look at. If any suppliers see this, feel free to chime in ! On a tangent (and maybe this should be a separate question, but I wasn't sure which category), has anyone used Ubuntu/Netbook Remix/Edubuntu or any other non-Windows OS in a similar situation? I'd quite like to use something that isn't Windows, mainly because most of the problems we have had have been down to rubbish/legally dubious/HDD-filling software being loaded on by the kids/families and I figure that they might find it all too much of an effort to learn a new OS. (Though maybe the lack of an optical drive might alleviate some of that). However, the project is very much based on the idea that the families use the machines at home, and I am dubious about how easily they would be able to connect printers, wireless and the like. (Not to mention teachers not being able to cope with the unfamiliar).

Hi, I'm an ICT Manager at a Primary School. We're due to have a raft of laptops being replaced in the next 6 to 8 months, and I'm looking at netbooks as a possible alternative to cheaper laptops to replace them. I'm personally looking at the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 as the replacement. The only problem being that I'd want to have Windows XP Professional / Windows Vista Business on the machine. Are Dell likely to respond to any requests, or am I going to have to buy seperate Vista Business licenses to do this? Does anyone have any recommendations on netbooks the kids might find handy?

I'm looking to buy 30 netbooks for use within the Maths Department and 20 laptops for video editing/graphic design. We currently keep our laptops in Lapsafe Trolleys and i've found that constant recharging throughout the day has resulted in depleted battery lives. I've also got issues with pupils pulling off keys. Does anyone have any advice/experience on purchasing and using laptops and netbooks in a school environment? I'm looking for laptops and netbooks that are durable enough to be used frequently by teenagers and have batteries that would last the full school day on one charge. Also, which laptops, within that criteria, would you recommend for video editing? Thanks

Hi all, Having read a good few threads and reviews etc on netbooks, I am still confused as to whether these devices are suitable for my network. It seems to be trade-offs of quite crucial elements depending on vendor. ie. battery life, Atom CPU, limited to 1gb RAM, intermittent wireless issues. Settling for any of those elements makes it a short term investment for me. My question is: Does anyone use these successfully in lessons for students using wireless, XP/Vista for office 2003/2007, other apps (not Adobe CS3 etc or heavy resource/processing intensive apps)? I have been looking at the Dell mini 9, Acer Aspire One, Eeepc 901 and Advent 4211/12/13 but looking at forums, they all seem to have as mentioned problems or tradeoffs. Any help would be appreciated

Just been watching James Quarles from Dell talking about Dell's vision of the connected Classroom Video: What a connected classroom looks like | IT PRO This is great, but slightly embarrassing for Dell, given that everyone in teaching is already using this stuff, and people like Microsoft, Apple, Frog, Smart, Promethean (honestly, I'd run out of space if I listed them all) have been talking about this sort of thing for years. Where on earth have they been? It's scary that the biggest name in education PCs seems to have only just realised where teaching is going... What does everyone else think?
