Hi, All our servers runs on on-premise VMware cluster. We have Active Directory with multiple child domains. We have recently migrated from on-premise Exchange to the Office 365 for the emails. Few departments use SharePoint to store the teaching/learning resources (Site-Pages/Documents library). We use Veeam for the backup; DR site has critical servers replicated by the Veeam. Do you guys use Azure VM/Storage or any Azure services for your school ? If you do then could you please share your experience on what do you use it for ? Thank you

Hello, I'm looking at putting the case forward for replacing some of our aging hardware, we have an HP EVA (HSV300) with 4 disk enclosures containing FATA and FC disks, making a total of 36TB capacity. It's all 7 years old now, and HP support costs are increasing rather drastically. We have a VMWare environment consisting of 3 hosts and a single backup server that all use the EVA for storage via 8GB fibre channel. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to storage solutions, so can anyone give me some suggestions for what to look at as a replacement for the EVA? Something along the same lines in terms of capacity and performance is fine, although any increased performance wouldn't be a bad thing. I'd like to keep our data in-house and not in the cloud. Thanks in advance.

Just a quick post to find out how the fine people of edugeek setup your computers and storage for video editing. A little background. We have used Adobe Creative Suite in our Media department for a number of years and have setup a NAS where each student has a secure folder for saving projects, capturing footage, scratch disks and media cache etc... This system is not without flaws but it has worked very well for 5+ years. However with the uptake of HD cameras and content, which in theory streamlines the editing process, we are starting to see alot of systems crashing, hanging and generally being very slow when working on video projects over the network. I have discussed this with the rest of our ICT team and we have a number of ideas, I was just hoping that some of you may have implemented something that we have not thought of. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Okay so I have a client that is seeking for a suitable way to backup 20TB of data, does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe using an external hard drive. Recommendations would be extremely helpful.

Hello, On our site we currently have 90 iPads for students to use. Some staff now want students to be able to save the research work that they do on the iPads to be able to access it from the PCs in the school. The way I was thinking of doing this was through using dropbox, but this would obviously mean a lot of hassle setting up every student with a dropbox account. Also being able to share work with their teachers would mean the staff having to set up a shared folder and typing in each individual students account. We do have fronter, and I wondered if anyone had any ideas for a solution that would be quicker and better than using dropbox before I get to work setting up approx 900 student dropbox accounts...

Ok, so I have 2 Dell R710, twin 6 core Xeon w/HT, 16GB RAM, FC HBA acting as fileservers running Server 2008 R2 I have just purchased a Dell FC SAN made up of: MD3600f MD1200 24 x 600GB 15k SAS drives The MD3600f connects into my SAN switch, along with the 2 file servers. The MD1200 connects via dual 6Gbps SAS into the MD3600f. The File servers hold network homes for around 2000 users (mainly macintosh, so quite a read intensive workflow). We have about 1200 devices. FS1 = ~1000 students roughly 2TB FS2 = ~1000 students roughly 2TB How should I configure my storage to suit this environment. It needs to be fast - we were using a sata based system before, but it couldn't deliver the IOPS we required, hence the new SAN. Now the questions: Should I have one raid 10 array per server, or one large raid 10 array split into luns per server? Should I separate homes and profiles onto different luns, or physical disks - we do have some windows users too. I only initially require about 4TB (after RAID and formatting) but this will grow as i move other users over. Any thoughts / suggestions welcome. Thanks.

How much storage space do people have? I currently have an issue regarding this at my school, in that my space is being eroded, due to my store cupboard being slowly but surely taken over by the ICT teacher (as it is at the back of her classroom). So, my current storage space consists of, about quarter of a cupboard - which works out at an area 7" by 4" in size. I also have 3 shelves in my server room which are 3" by 1" in size, and I have 3 kitchen style cupboards by my desk. So, as you can probably gather, anything large has nowhere to go. I have now been told that a loft space is being arranged for storage of old equipment until it is collected - which is a bit odd really, as it requires a lot of effort to get it up there and then back down when it is collected... What do other people have? How do you deal with storage when you order batches of new machines? I'm not talking about 35 new machines for a suite (as these are a special one off occasions really), more when we order 10 new laptops, or a dozen machines for a new area etc... We had a big argument over it here, as I was told my desk area was a mess - explaining that I simply have nowhere else to put stuff never goes very far... So, any ideas, suggestions etc...?

Afternoon all, Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem or its just me? Upon testing a new install i noticed the C: Drive on a fresh machine was maxed out, a bit of digging and it appears OneDrive was syncing my entire directory to the device, or at least windows thinks it is! (despite files on demand being turned on). This has happened on a few machines with the 2024-07 Cumulative Update installed so i thought i'd cross check a device that didn't have the update. The device that didn't yet have the update worked fine and the C: drive was normal, i noted the Onedrive client version as 24.151.0728.0003 and proceeded to install the update. After it had completed i noticed the C: was now full like the other devices, I checked the OneDrive version again and it had changed to 24.146.0721.0003 which leads me to believe there's a bug in that version and the July update is installing it. I've created a quick fix script to remove the affected version and reinstall using Winget, this puts it back to 24.151.0728 and the storage issue is no more. https://liam-robinson.co.uk/july-2024-onedrive-client-disk-space-bug-workaround-fix/ I can't find anything online so I'm thinking it might just be me that's affected, has anyone else come across this? Has anyone here got a document management system in place in their school? We have roughly 90,000 files in our public area, and 300,000 in our teacher's private areas. And as such things can be a little hard to find at times. Has anyone implemented anything to ease this problem? I have been looking at the Google Appliance (the non-mini one,as the mini one has too small a capacity). Has anyone else looked into this?

Hi guys, Bit stumped, wondered if anyone has any ideas. Yesterday at around 2:30pm, both our SAN switches lost connection to the SAN. Hyper-V tried to failover but because the connection to the SAN was lost, we were flooded with disk IO errors and most the servers seem to have corrupted, not to the point they are completed screwed, they did come back up... but enough that we are having an absolute world of issues this morning, I have had to restart all the VM's and they were running disk checks, clearing entries for corrupt files. What is confusing me is that most the machines lost connection to the network as well as our cameras back to the NVR we have. Initially before I discovered the SAN was having a fit, I thought one of our access switches in the server room had gone awry, but the SAN switches are directly plugged into the SAN so how did they also lose connection (apologies if I sound dim here and am missing something, I am fairly new to delving into the technicalities of SAN storage) Does this sound like a power issue? a switch issue? a cabling issue? am I potentially missing something? - head full of questions! I do not want this to happen again, obviously, so am trying to work out what on earth happened! Many thanks

I'm sure I've seen on Edugeek schools saying that they use some sort of online solution for creating portfolios of work. Currently our GCSE Photography pupils create large powerpoints with 4+ screen shots (using the Snipping Tool) per page and text details. These are unweildy and use a lot of space just creating the things. We'd really like to find a neater solution. Online sounds great as it will save jumping through hoops giving moderators access. Thanks

The Multimedia teachers are looking at moving away from graphics to video.. They've rightly seen the issue that having 30+ pupils editing video could be too intensive on the system. The PCs in the classroom are fine, however the pupils storage is all on a DELL SAN in RAID6 that may complain under such a load. if that wasn't the issue then 30 plus pupils storing gigs of uncompressible video to be backed up will take too long or too much space. (pupils have 2gb of network storage currently.) I can increase their storage quotas but the backup windows may get quite long on days after 30+ video edits have occurred. (backup is a raid5 HP server on 1 gig link, using vranger. backing up the whole VM incrementally) BUT Pupils have massive online storage via OneDrive and we have a 1000/200 internet connection.. any cunning way this can be leveraged?

Anyone fancy a 30.7TB SSD. Well Samsung have started manufacturing them. The 16TB model are going for about $10,000. Samsung Newsroom Post According to Samsung This breakthrough was made possible by combining 32 of the new 1TB NAND flash packages, each comprised of 16 stacked layers of 512Gb V-NAND chips. These super-dense 1TB packages allow for approximately 5,700 5-gigabyte (GB), full HD movie files to be stored within a mere 2.5-inch storage device. In addition to the doubled capacity, performance levels have risen significantly and are nearly twice that of Samsung’s previous generation high-capacity SAS SSD. Based on a 12Gb/s SAS interface, the new PM1643 drive features random read and write speeds of up to 400,000 IOPS and 50,000 IOPS, and sequential read and write speeds of up to 2,100MB/s and 1,700 MB/s, respectively. These represent approximately four times the random read performance and three times the sequential read performance of a typical 2.5-inch SATA SSD*. “With our launch of the 30.72TB SSD, we are once again shattering the enterprise storage capacity barrier, and in the process, opening up new horizons for ultra-high capacity storage systems worldwide,” said Jaesoo Han, executive vice president, Memory Sales & Marketing Team at Samsung Electronics. Would you stick 30TB's worth of data on one drive? So, who's got a spare $20,000? iSilverback
