We have some classroom sets of iPads managed using Airwatch which we set up before the release of Apple School Manager. They each use a unique Apple ID, are in various class sets with their own groups of apps etc and have pretty much done what we wanted. We used DEP into Airwatch and they've been pretty good ever since. We're now getting asked to deploy them higher up the School where shared use is not so easy to handle - file management etc - and where everyone already has Google for Education/Chromebook individual logons. The idea being that multi-user logons are more appropriate in this area. From what I can see, to 'convert' these iPads to individual logons using the 'Education' feature (they do meet the spec) first requires the integration between School Manager and Airwatch etc, but then seems to suggest re-enrollment - which I'd like to avoid if I can. Has anyone gone down this road? We were wondering if it is as much work as it looks and how all the existing Airwatch groups and apps will fit into a scenario of School Manager/individual users and are there any other pitfalls awaiting us (very much non-Apple) support guys. Can anyone offer any advice please? Thanks in anticipation. Ian

Hello, On our site we currently have 90 iPads for students to use. Some staff now want students to be able to save the research work that they do on the iPads to be able to access it from the PCs in the school. The way I was thinking of doing this was through using dropbox, but this would obviously mean a lot of hassle setting up every student with a dropbox account. Also being able to share work with their teachers would mean the staff having to set up a shared folder and typing in each individual students account. We do have fronter, and I wondered if anyone had any ideas for a solution that would be quicker and better than using dropbox before I get to work setting up approx 900 student dropbox accounts...

Apple Configurator... There's got to be a better way
clarnold posted a topic in How do you do....it?
In my school district we use configurator to manage our iPad deployment. We have 4 different types of iPad carts that all need to be set up in different ways. At the moment the process we are using to update these iPads is to bring in one iPad from each cart, pair it up with it's sync station, run the updates then update the apps to the appropriate folders. The problem is at the moment we have 30 carts and we are getting 30 more in the spring. It took me all day just to move apps into their appropriate folders for 30 carts. And the worst part is that I am repeating the same 4 layouts. I can't help but think there has got to be a better way so that I am not doing the same task over and over and over. I want to know, is there any way in configurator to either A. Export the backup of one of each of the different cart types and then import it to the other sync stations, thus eliminating repetition. B. is it possible for one iPad to be supervised by multiple sync stations? This way i could have 4 "base image" iPads and just connect them to the other sync stations then back up those images. C. If I connect an unsupervised ipad to a sync station (to do the same thing as B) will it mess up my supervision on the rest of the iPads? Any suggestions would be great!- 7 replies

Hi All, We have a set of 32 iPads. They iPads are running ios 7.1.2 with FileBrowser for business v5.4 being pushed out with Apple Configurator v1.6. We have created a startup.settings file which works when I Assign Users to the ipads. However we need a way of refreshing the iPads so that all photos, documents and any other personalized settings are removed. I can't seem to do this when the iPads have users assigned to them. Is there anyway to keep the settings in FileBrowser while removing all other documents from the iPads. Thanks in Advance

Hi all, We are having an issue with one of our iPads. The iPad is running ios 8.0.2. We are trying to deploy a FileBrowser configuration file by assigning a user using Apple Configurator. However when we attempt to assign a user it fails if our Meraki Management profile option is ticked. The iPads are also taking a long time to refresh and check in/out. Has anybody else had any issue similar to this or have any ideas on how we might be able to resolve this? Thanks in Advance

Hi all, We have around 600 iPads at our school and use Meraki as our MDM. Everything works pretty well(ish) overall, but we're starting to have issues with pupils switching on 2-Step Verification on their iPads. We have always set up their Apple ID's for them so we have control over them but after the last couple of iOS updates, they have been given the option to add 2SV and it's giving us a massive headache when they forget their Apple ID password etc. as they have linked it to their personal mobile. Aside from managed Apple ID's which I haven't gone down the route of yet as a) I haven't had enough time to properly investigate, b) I want to make sure actually works and c) I ideally don't want some managed and some not, so would have to switch all to manage which is probably a huge headache to do, I don't know what else to do. Any help or advice if you are in a similar situation, would be much appreciated. SG

I have a weird problem, keep in mind this school has been working fine with Meraki upto May 5th of this year. These are iPad Mini Gen1, and iPad 2's, so they are all on iOS9.3.5. For some reason, all iPads on the Meraki console are showing as offline, and not checked in since May5th. But, their GPS location is updating. I can't refresh profiles, app lists, or get activity. On the iPads it is letting me re-enroll the iPad in Meraki by using the m.meraki.com website, but it doesnt show this as connected on the Meraki console. On the network side of things, its a county smoothwall system, but I have seen the real-time filter and nothing is being blocked during this process. Also I can manually download apps via the App Store with no issues. I have tried static IP's, restarted our DNS and DHCP servers, I have gone direct to the proxy via IP. I have wiped the iPad fully, re-supervised it, installed Meraki and had the exact same problem. On the iPads I didnt wipe, and can still get into the Meraki App, I can see the app I just added today, hit it to download, and ... nothing! Although in the web filter it shows activity to the deployment site, but no app on the iPad. But the kicker, if I tether my phone to the iPad via a hotspot, everything works perfectly. Where could the problem be, if Meraki is setup fine. Filters are showing nothing being blocked, yet I can download from the App Store directly?

Afternoon all looking for advice/peoples experiences of rolling out IPads in schools. Ive got Apple School Manager setup and devices appearing and I have a trial set up with JAMF again devices all appearing fine. DEP and VPP are all set up and when I use my phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot the configuration profiles all set up fine. However as soon as I add the devices to our network which sits behind a Smoothwall proxy nothing works. If I bypass the proxy manually on the device communication with JAMF works again so problem lies with smoothwall settings it seems. We use Kerberos authentication as NTLM has caused us other issues in the past. As I understand it Apple does not support Kerberos therefore I am struggling to move forward with my trial. Does anyone manage I pads behind smoothwall using JAMF? If so are you able to share your knowledge? One other issue I've got is that App installations keep prompting for I Tunes logins in order to install. I'm sure I've got it set to device assignment in JAMF and not user assignment. Anyone seen this before. We are waiting to hear back from Smoothwall for advice, however any tips shared here would be great as well. Kind regards

Hi, I am having an issue at the moment with Shared iPad deployment. The iPads use DEP and talk to our meraki console, where they are supervised and configured as shared iPads from that DEP enrolment profile. Once they have been supervised the devices think they are in San Francisco and we seem to be unable to change the location of the iPads. There doesn't seem to be a restriction set...

Hi everyone, The school I work in as a technician has over 300 iPads, we currently manage these by Apple Configurator 2, this works well but could work better. We have a profile that blocks pretty much anything that hasn't got to do with school. We also plan to roll out Impero when the app becomes compatible with IOS 9. The reason for this post is I just wanted to know how other Schools/Organisations manage their iPads? Any particular apps, apple config methods or anything else? I just want to get an idea of how other schools set their iPads up, as unfortunately none of the other local schools use iPads. This is a Secondary School based in the UK, the majority of the school devices use Windows, hence the lack of experience. Hope you can help, many thanks. Marcus

Morning all, We have 1:1 iPads at my 3-18 school and are looking at replacing paper-based student planners with digital ones (preferably without spending a fortune). What are other people using? We have iSAMS as our MIS so it would need to integrate with that (obviously), to prevent me from having another system that needs administering separately Boomerang is on my radar at the moment. Many thanks in advance, ScubaGirl

Hi, We have some iPods and an iPad in school and it won't let me update the iOS. It keeps saying 'Unable to verify update. iOS 7.0.3 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the internet.' There's no issue downloading apps, going on online or anything else. Just happens when trying to update the iOS... anyone know why??

Hi Just about to start managing ipads using vpp and configurator. My instruction set says to download one copy of each app onto itunes on management computer and sync, then copying apps accross to use in configurator. However I cant tranfer the spps onto computer as I cant authorise the computer for use by VPP Manager as its associated with VPP! any ideas anyone? Cheers Steve

Hi I finally did my first install using Configurator last week (i got a load of useful info from guys on here to help me through the process thanks!) overall i've been quite pleased with how it works and it makes deploying apps and a master image a doddle compared to how i was doing it, there's just a couple of things i haven't cracked yet if anyone has come across these issues to help pls.... 1. I've bought 31 licences for the paid apps i want, used one code to redeem in iTunes and imported it into Configurator. When i imported the spreadsheet i noticed it wouldn't use the code i'd used in iTunes ("unable to redeem code with iTunes store") so re-downloaded the spreadsheet and re-imported it but still the same. I've deleted the app and added it again and the assigned codes automatically appeared but importing the spreadsheet again hasn't made a difference... i've checked that the mac is authorised with the ID in iTunes and rebooted etc but no difference. For now i've just bought an extra copy of the app but i'm sure it should let you use the code you've used to download the app with? 2. I've created a base profile with just the wifi settings in which has got them connected to the net and then trying to add the Meraki profile to them. When i first apply the profiles about half of them fail with installing the Meraki one but if i keep refreshing them or do them individually it does it eventually, is this just AC being temperamental or is there a different way to make sure it installs when they all refresh? 3. Lastly, I'm running AC on a Mac mini, never used one before and its only being used to set the iPads up, i've set it up as a stand alone but i need some form of backup for it. Is it worth using the Time Machine utility for this or can it be linked to a windows server backup, or any other suggestion if you use something different? Cheers

Hi, I've a bit of a conundrum that I can't help but think someone else must be experiencing. We've a couple of hundred iPad 2's that we purchased from AT Computers (no longer trading). We really want to push ahead making use of DEP, however our existing iPads are not available/ registered with apple and therefore aren't available in MDM. Our understanding: When logging into DEP we should have a list of previous orders that we approve for the programme. Although AT Computers have now been bought/ changed trading name (yey), after pestering them for the last 4 months nothings has yet happened. So I guess my question to you all is: "Do any of you have old devices that are available to the deployment programme?" Many thanks, hope you've had more success than us with this! David

We are looking to lease a significant number of ipads (800+) and need to put a proof of concept report together looking at 3 credible providers. Western Computer in Bristol are already in the mix but we are looking for two others who may be able to provide us with a quality solution. Does anyone have any recommendations? Cheers Andy

Title pretty much says it all. I have increasing number of iPads at one of my schools that the apps seem to stop updating and then show as Waiting or Loading. They have internet connectivity. There are sufficient VPP licences available for each of the apps. I've tried a different network i.e. home Wi-Fi network to rule out any strict firewall rules. The only way it seems to fix the issue is to Wipe the device, delete it from Endpoint Manager / Intune and re-enrol. At this stage it could be at least a dozen devices and I have no evidence yet to suggest the same thing wont happen again to the wiped devices. Any thoughts or ideas ladies and gents? Thanks in advance

Is anyone using this? I keep getting piles of iPads handed to me because "Seesaw isn't working", but most of the time things seem fine when I test them. I don't think it's the "one pupil has error, rest see a chance to skive" scenario though can't rule it out. I have seen Seesaw used in the suite and not been alerted to problems there, so it could be wi-fi (but why only Seesaw?) or an iPad/MDM thing. Basically, is anyone else experiencing problems with this app?

Still having problems with our iPad set up. We have a load of iPads (mainly 32Gb, a few 64GB) with Lightspeed as the MDM. Can't afford to change MDM unless there's a better free option. Thanks to the people on here these are at the stage where, on request, apps can be pushed out. (If they are actually available on iOS - don't get me started there). There is, and never will be (don't ask), any organisation of how the pads are deployed: It's grab as many as you can. As a consequence, individual logins ain't gonna fly, so a generic account is in use. If necessary, I guess an account/year or class might fly. Yes, this may not be recommended practise but it's out of my control. (Presumably) As a consequence we are having all sorts of problems: Log in randomly plays up iCloud backup doesn't seem to be working, and I can't see where to activate this in Lightspeed Storage space seems very limited but iCloud doesn't seem to be available as a storage option and OneDrive doesn't seem to work either iMovie keeps asking for an Apple ID and then sticks two fingers up Probably more... I know @Brimstone often mentions a caching server. Anyone know what exactly is needed and approximate costs? More to the point, has anyone got any solutions to the above problems that don't involve spending £££s/are easy to implement/"challenging" users can grasp?

hi the company who now supports our IT in school wants to blitz our existing ipads and use Jamf to manage them. All well and good except we have copies of a very expensive app installed and apparently there is a problem because the app is associated with an apple ID and jamf doesn't support Apple ID's. Has anyone else come across this and is there a fix?? I am in contact with the developers of the app but don't hold out much hope that they will be able to help. TIA Christine

Hi, I am hoping I can find some assistance with Apple School Manager and M365 Single Sign on. We currently have a single M365 tenant across the trust, but multiple Apple School Managers. Does anyone know if its possible to enable Single Sign On with multiple ASM's and 1 M365 tenant? My concern is that schools all use a single domain name across all sites, and didnt know how this would affect enabling single sign on. Chris

Hi, we have a iOS devices currently and we can only identify the device in the filtering logs and not the user and when we have 1:many devices this is not really suitable. We started looking at third party options such as solutions by Albion and Securly. However I contacted LGfL to see if we could "potentially" drop the SchoolProtect filtering part of the broadband provision as we do not want multiple filters and we were told "It is not possible to turn off SchoolProtect while still using the LGfL firewall. 3rd party filtering may be possible but will create interference ". I am fairly new to LGfL and SchoolProtect so any information or guidance would be great. Thanks in advance. Chris
