Does Meraki need OSX Server running MDM to deploy the apps silently? I'm just looking at moving a site over from using Apple Configurator to Meraki (as that seems to be getting more traction than Configurator & seems a better solution (allowing us to deploy remotely).

One of my schools has 30 iPads and uses Configurator to manage them. I have come in this morning to find that 5 of their primarily FREE apps are showing a negative number of licenses. It is my understanding that if its free then there should just be the word 'free' and no number next to it. I tried removing the app from configurator and re-adding with no luck. I am in the process of deleting the apps from the Mac Mini completely and re-downloading them. If that doesn't work, are there any other reasons for the negative amount and any other possible fixes? Here's a screenshot in configurator showing two of the apps.

Hi, Hopefully you'll bear with me on this one, I'm looking for advice and / or how you are currently deploying your iPads. We currently have two differing uses of iPads; bays and student one-to-one project. I think the easiest thing to do would be to explain what we're currently doing, then assess what and how we want to improve. Currently, we use the Lightspeed MDM solution. We have VPP codes but now want to move over to the managed distribution so we retain the ownership of the app. At the moment we are using one Apple ID to configure all iPads (though we do buy enough codes to cover the amount of iPads). We have been using Apple Configurator to supervise, install the MDM profile and then Configurator to deploy the Apps (quicker than OTA). The main problem we come up against, more so on the one-to-one iPads where the students have their own Apple ID, is that any updates to the 'base' setup we do, they require the school Apple ID to update those Apps. This isn't ideal. I find the whole process of configuring iPads troublesome and too time consuming, they can't make it too easy like applying Apps to the device rather than an Apple ID, can they? It really isn't fit for purpose. Anyway, I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of applying Apps to devices as a base build, handing them over to students and then them not being prompted for the school Apple ID. If we're doing it completely wrong, that's fine, we'd just like a few pointers on how the rest of you are bypassing these little niggles. -
Anyone have problems downloading ths ios 7.1.1 upadate in apple configurator. I am trying to prep some ipads via configurator but it keeps failing on the ios 7.1.1 update and as these are supervised devices I cannot turn the auto update off in configurator/ Any help/advice Stuart

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of setting up around 200 iPads for staff and pupils. TL;DR In Apple Configurator, when I'm restoring a 'Master iPad' to a new set of devices, the apps installed are linked to the master iPad's AppleID and I can't update them (after I change the AppleID of each device) without first putting in the Master iPad's AppleID password. Read on to see what I've done so far. - I have created separate AppleIDs for each device - in fact I created more AppleIDs than we'll ever need for the foreseeable future so we don't have to be white-listed again, etc (using a script to automate the creation and verification) - I have set up VPP, added apps (only free for the time being and in the process of getting Apple to grant me the free licenses for eligible devices for GarageBand, Numbers, Keynote, etc) - I have set up Meraki and added the managed devices (again via a script for the verification) I have also prepared and supervised some iPads for testing and here's where I'm having some issues. In Apple Configurator I have set up a custom wallpaper, our wifi, the Meraki enrollment profile and a few restrictions and that all worked fine. I was able to push out apps via Meraki and they were silently installed to the supervised iPads. When I was doing some reading up about how to deploy the iPads, I found a lot of instructions on how I can set up a 'master' iPad and have that restored to each new iPad with a core set of apps, folders, etc The first time I did it, I didn't realise that all the apps were 'stripped' before restoring the iPads, so in effect I had 'blank' iPads. After some more reading I found that I had to get the .ipa files, and add the apps to the Configurator; which I did. I then restored a bunch of iPads. These iPads were all logged in with the 'master' iPads AppleID. I logged them out and logged in with a different AppleID on each one. The problem is that those apps are linked to the 'master' iPad's AppleID and when I try to update them from the AppStore it asks me for that AppleID's password. So, what am I doing wrong? Also, is there an easier/faster way of deploying the iPads with separate emails and AppleIDs - or am I asking too much of Apple? Thanks Edit: Just to say that this is not a 1-2-1 deployment. We're a 2 (going to 3) form entry primary school and we'll be deploying roughly about 20 iPads per yeargroup.

Experiencing a little problem trying to install and supervise about 14 iPad's. Every time I come to prepare the iPad's I get a message saying "Unable to communicate with device". I've used multiple cables and changed which USB socket I use on the MacBook but still it keeps coming up with the error message. I've attached a pic of what it says, it's starting to bug me now

Hi All, We have a set of 32 iPads. They iPads are running ios 7.1.2 with FileBrowser for business v5.4 being pushed out with Apple Configurator v1.6. We have created a startup.settings file which works when I Assign Users to the ipads. However we need a way of refreshing the iPads so that all photos, documents and any other personalized settings are removed. I can't seem to do this when the iPads have users assigned to them. Is there anyway to keep the settings in FileBrowser while removing all other documents from the iPads. Thanks in Advance

Hi all, We are having an issue with one of our iPads. The iPad is running ios 8.0.2. We are trying to deploy a FileBrowser configuration file by assigning a user using Apple Configurator. However when we attempt to assign a user it fails if our Meraki Management profile option is ticked. The iPads are also taking a long time to refresh and check in/out. Has anybody else had any issue similar to this or have any ideas on how we might be able to resolve this? Thanks in Advance

Can anyone advise whether a DJ mixing app exists that allows audio files to be imported via Apple Configurator? All of our iPads are supervised using Apple Configurator, hence they cannot be synced to iTunes. I have tried installing the following apps: djay (By algoriddim) Traktor DJ (By NATIVE INSTRUMENTS GmbH) DJ Mixer (By Musicsoft Arts) iDJ (By Numark) However, none of them appear to allow importing of audio tracks via Apple Configurator. I am using the 'assign' feature, and adding MP3 files to each app individually. Is anyone able to help?? I'm willing to buy any DJ app if it will work!!

In my public school job I'm responsible for a cart of 30 shared iPad 4th generation and since we are a Google school and we don't have a MDM, I've deployed them manually using only Apple Configurator (no Apple School Manager.) Here are some roadblocks and problems I've run into which I could use some advice and/or help with: When a new app is requested for use in the iPads, first I duplicate the old Blueprint and put today's date on it (for version control), I add the app to the Blueprint in a specific location as preferred by the teacher, then I reapply the blueprint to the existing iPads. PROBLEM: Since the iPads are numbered via the blueprint sequentially (e.g.. Library iPad 1, Library iPad 2....Library iPad 30,) when the changed blueprint is re-applied the iPads renumber themselves (e.g.. Library iPad 31, Library iPad 32...Library iPad 60). What option did I overlook or accidently click which causes the iPads to rename themselves every time the blueprint is reapplied? PROBLEM: When reapplying the blueprints, I have to babysit the Mac Mini to be there to click a user prompt (e.g... "Do you want to replace the apps?") and there are other things which require my attention in the meantime. How can I automate or streamline this process? ROADBLOCK: Besides apps, we also use web clips for certain educational websites where no app exists, however as far as I can tell, there is no way to prearrange the location of these webclips on the homescreen, which then need to be manually arranged on each iPad afterwards. Is there another way I can do this? ROADBLOCK: Intermittently it seems like when applying the blueprint the entire operation would get stuck or hang and remain that way until either I click "cancel" or at worst unplug the cart from the Mac Mini. Sometimes it would get stuck at downloading apps and other times it would seemingly get stuck at assigning licenses. Has anybody else experienced this issue? I've tried checking in the Mac OS X Sierra's Console.app but I won't let me view logs created at an earlier point in time. PROBLEM: Is there a way to prevent students from changing the home screen layout? On Android tablets that my manager manages for kindergarten and first graders it seems like there is no way the students can accidently move the app icons as opposed to the iPads. What am I overlooking here? Any and all help would be appreciated it because it feels like there are important things which I am overlooking but can't figure out what, and that frustrates me.

We have a student here who qualifies for ESA allowances, and has been assigned an iPad for individual use both in school and at home. We use Apple Configurator to manage iPads (10, plus this extra 1) at the school site, but this won't work for one taken outside of our network. Are there any MDM solutions which are suitable for just one device? I'm happy to use Configurator to handle profiles and configuration, but something to lock it down and track it when off site is required. We have VPP and Apple School accounts, but are currently only used for licensing applications.

Hi everyone, The school I work in as a technician has over 300 iPads, we currently manage these by Apple Configurator 2, this works well but could work better. We have a profile that blocks pretty much anything that hasn't got to do with school. We also plan to roll out Impero when the app becomes compatible with IOS 9. The reason for this post is I just wanted to know how other Schools/Organisations manage their iPads? Any particular apps, apple config methods or anything else? I just want to get an idea of how other schools set their iPads up, as unfortunately none of the other local schools use iPads. This is a Secondary School based in the UK, the majority of the school devices use Windows, hence the lack of experience. Hope you can help, many thanks. Marcus

Hi Guys Some apps such as Garageband, are paid for through VPP but then require a further in app purchase to unlock the full functionality, is this possible using VPP? or is there another way round it? Thanks and hope any one reading this has a great Christmas

Hi I finally did my first install using Configurator last week (i got a load of useful info from guys on here to help me through the process thanks!) overall i've been quite pleased with how it works and it makes deploying apps and a master image a doddle compared to how i was doing it, there's just a couple of things i haven't cracked yet if anyone has come across these issues to help pls.... 1. I've bought 31 licences for the paid apps i want, used one code to redeem in iTunes and imported it into Configurator. When i imported the spreadsheet i noticed it wouldn't use the code i'd used in iTunes ("unable to redeem code with iTunes store") so re-downloaded the spreadsheet and re-imported it but still the same. I've deleted the app and added it again and the assigned codes automatically appeared but importing the spreadsheet again hasn't made a difference... i've checked that the mac is authorised with the ID in iTunes and rebooted etc but no difference. For now i've just bought an extra copy of the app but i'm sure it should let you use the code you've used to download the app with? 2. I've created a base profile with just the wifi settings in which has got them connected to the net and then trying to add the Meraki profile to them. When i first apply the profiles about half of them fail with installing the Meraki one but if i keep refreshing them or do them individually it does it eventually, is this just AC being temperamental or is there a different way to make sure it installs when they all refresh? 3. Lastly, I'm running AC on a Mac mini, never used one before and its only being used to set the iPads up, i've set it up as a stand alone but i need some form of backup for it. Is it worth using the Time Machine utility for this or can it be linked to a windows server backup, or any other suggestion if you use something different? Cheers

Here I am again finding yet more issues of Apple in an education enviroment! Dont get me wrong iPads are great - i have seen many adverts where they make very good chopping boards! all jokes a side i can see that Tablets whether is be apple or other wise is the future atleast my 2 year old believes so! So currently running 15 iPads in a school net work enviroment and using Apple Configurator to manage these so that we can add apps and that set restrictions in one hit and not burdon the small team i work with doing it manually on every iPad. The results it works ok! there were a few after configuration controls like re-setting the restrictions code and unfortunutly the apple passcode can not be disabled but with all that in mind it was easy after setup and it worked or did! . . . We had hurd rumors that ios6 had problems with this offical apple product so kept the iPads on the old ios5 it was not a problem until the little darlings decided to update the ios themselves! Now we have no ability to centraly add apps so are stuck manually doing thus as the rumors were correct! ITs a known problem with apple apparently and yet there is not a date for a release of a newer version of the apple configurator! We have tried downgrading to IOS5 but apparently this is not possible not even for an apple engineer! so we are stuck! Any one else running in to errors with management of iPads? or what do you use and is it cost effective?

So, i have 32 ipads on the Apple Profile Manager etc. Am trying to add another - have created the user, prepared & supervised it on Apple Configurator, now I'm trying to enroll it for VPP app distribution - I send the invitation to the user device , go through the steps of logging in with Apple ID, accept the terms & conditions and then it says "Yoru sessionhas timed out. Try again" I have tried around 40 times , i have reset the network settings on the device, created an new Apple ID, cleared the Safari cookies, tried different wireless LAN's (we have a few different ones), have even erased and redone the device twice. Last time I did it , it worked after about 3 attempts ( and resetting network settings ) - i am now at my wits end ! Any ideas??

Hi, I have forgotten my MBA admin password!! Have got back into it but locked out of old keychain! I have supervised 33 iPads using that keychain so not sure what to do? Can I re-supervise with a new keychain or can I bruteforce the old keychain password. There is a tool for Leopard but no trace of a tool that works on Yosemite. The only thing I need the old keychain for in the iPad supervision otherwise I can blow it away. I am using find my iPad / iclould lock on these iPads also. Also using Lightspeed MDM. Advice?

Morning, Apologies if this question has been asked before I had a hunt through previous threads but could not find a related post. With a Mac Mini Server running Apple Configurator I have 60+ ipads that are currently supervised and running fine, the only issue I have run into so far is that when plugging the devices into a windows laptop I am unable to retrieve photos / videos on the devices. As you can imagine this is extremely frustrating for staff and students when wanting to quickly pull off the photo / video they have just made. I can understand the reasons for security to lock them in supervised mode but with the school only having the one mac osx device it will be difficult to have this accessible for a user to plug in and retrieve there media. I've played with the idea of setting up mapped drives to the mac server and trying to auto import photos using iPhoto to shared folders on the mac server but with the users trawling through hundreds of photos and the mac mini hard drives running out of space very quickly I can see this as a non starter. Any recommendations would be gratefully appreciated! Thanks Ash -
Hi, I work in schools and have been trying to figure out Apple Configurator 2 and along the way I have made some tutorial videos in the hope that they may help other people out and to try to remember what I did. I have tried to keep them as short and as precise as possible. So I thought I would post them here as they may help somebody out. Thanks Carl

So Apple TVs with latest update (5.1) are supposedly able to connect to wireless and through proxy servers using 802.1x. This is possible by uploading a Profile through Apple Configurator. support.apple.com/kb/HT5438 Has anyone got this to work? My profile which includes credentials, passwords and proxy server info works perfectly on iPads, you don't have to accept certificates, but the same profile will not work on Apple TVs. Very frustrating. Any ideas?

I am in the process of using Apple Configurator to manage 30 iPads. I have downloaded numbers of free apps in iTunes. But when I assign those apps to the pupils' iPads do I need to select each apps individually? Can I organise my apps in the Apple Configurator differently? Do I need to move those downloaded apps to the folders individually as I didn't find creating folder facility in the Apple Configurator? Is there a way to create app folders on the iPads via the Apple Configurator? Any suggestions welcome.

Help please We have just bought 15 ipads and a mac mini server to manage them We have got apple config working and can get them to a basic config but when we then try and modify them thru profile manager they just will not talk to server or server talk to them We have a Enrollment certificate and all that it just hangs when trying to push anything out to them the mac server is called macserver.local and is not on any domains. I have a dns forward macserver.local to ip but it seems to me it is when the ipads are trying to get to http:// or https://macserver.local that it freezes. So I thought that I would do a pac file so that I can exclude macserver.local from proxy and go DIRECT but it does not work copy of pac file follows it works in that the DIRECT element goes to macserver.local but proxy bit does not work. My pc just hangs function FindProxyForURL(url, host) { // variable strings to return var proxy_yes = “PROXY 10.12.4.122:3128?; var proxy_no = “DIRECT”; if (shExpMatch(url, “*.macserver.local*”)) { return proxy_no; } // Anything else use the proxy else return “PROXY 10.12.4.122:3128" } Any help on this please Stuart

Hi I'm currently working through a series ofissues updating a cart of iPads to iOS7 which are connected to a mac minirunning Apple Configurator. Below are the issues i am having if case anyone has come across them already pls. If i fix them i'll add to this to help anyone else with thesame problems.... Just to mention the Mac, iTunes and AC are allup to date. There's 32 iPads, on around half of them someof the kids have already updated the iOS over the wireless which means some ofthe apps now don't work until they are updated to new versions via AC. So problems so far: 1. When the new versions of apps were importedinto AC they were all showing as free inc paid apps so the codes couldn't be assigned. FIX: Delete the apps from AC first before you re-import them 2. Since the latest updates when the cart isplugged into the Mac iPhoto launches to view the photos on them and i get 30+boxes telling me "Photos in camera roll of iPad 'name' cannot be importedbecause the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device toimport them" A suggested fix is to open Image Capture and set it to notlaunch any app when the ipads are connected but it doesn't make a differenceiPhoto still opens and this message appears every time. 3. When I plugged one iPad into the macdirectly with a usb it updated to iOS7 ok, but when i plugged the trolley innone of them would check in to AC and i got 30+ boxes saying "AppleConfigurator could not connect to this device" The problem seems to bethat the iPads have a passcode on them... For the iPads still on iOS6 if the passcode isentered and then plugged in (either via usb directly or in the trolley) it thenappears in AC ok. Having a passcode on them didn't stop them checking in beforethe update?. For the iPads that have been updated over thewireless (now on iOS7), the problem seems to be when the passcode is enteredand then connected a message appears on ipad screen saying "Trust ThisComputer?" This is a new message? It's annoying as thecable in the trolley isn't long enough to work on the ipad while plugged and itwill be a pain to have to plug them in to usb one by one to turn passcodes offand click this message. 4. Another issue with passcodes is onceupdated, the user is prompted to enter a passcode as it does but each time theiPad is refreshed it wipes the passcode and prompts for it to be set again. It's annoying that before all this i was just starting to get to grips with it all argh! lol, anyway if anyone has come across these issues and hasa fix please comment -
I'm after some advise please regarding deploying iPads for some staff. We have had 20 iPads and haven't bought any for years, and ditched the Apple device management software used years ago. I think it was the Apple configurator which just managed apps and restrictions etc, but was still quite a manual setup. The MAc mini which was used has gone a long time ago too. We have just purchased 16 more ipads which are for Staff only and not for shared use. Really restricting these aren't really an issue, so looking at ways to deploy this in as little time possible. They will need: -to be setup for basic use, language etc (this takes ages manually per iPad) -Same appleID on each ipad -Wireless access set up for school (and use at home option) - can use a common wifi key -smoothwall mitm certificate installed Then: -Need some free apps and possibly some paid for one's (so a VPP is required?) -Email set up for each user (they can do that under instructions if necessary) -Then Find my Phone or something similar For these few, I'm looking at whatever can be done using free software. I've had a read of the different possibilities, but it all seems to end up with paying something along the line Can I do what I want with Apple Configurator for Mac and Apple School Manager? or is there something worth paying for for such a small requirement? (No budget!) Appreciate any advice from the experienced folk here! Many thanks in advance.
