About cbsc

  1. Thank you all for the suggestions. I have indeed contacted the person running the YouTube channel and await their response. Could I ask whether everyone else encounters the same issue (the "join" button is unavailable) if you browse to https://www.youtube.com/@BicenMaths when signed in with a Google Workspace for Education account? I just want to check it's not an issue only affecting our domain. We want to avoid using a separate Google account (out of Google domain) if possible, especially as the account will have the school's credit card associated with it (to pay for the subscription).
  2. Our Maths Department want to join a particular YouTube channel membership, which is a paid-for monthly subscription. When you browse to the YouTube channel using a personal Google account (or without being signed in at all), you are presented with the "subscribe" and "join" buttons (top right). However when you browse to the same YouTube channel when signed in with a Google Workspace for Education account, only the "subscribe" button is present and the "join" button is missing. An example YouTube channel is below: https://www.youtube.com/@BicenMaths This happens with any account from our Google domain, including admin accounts. These accounts are designated as being over the age of 18. I have contacted both Google Workspace support and YouTube support, and neither have offered any useful advice. I can't find any settings that would be causing this, and am wondering whether this is due to a limitation with Educational accounts. I would appreciate any advice!
  3. Could I please ask for some advice regarding 'Named User licensing' for Adobe Creative Cloud. We haven't started using the software yet, but before we do so I wanted to find out other's experiences and whether anyone is using user licenses successfully. We are an LGfL customer and have 120 free user licenses. As per the following link I understand that users can remain signed in to the app on up to two computers and can use the app on only one computer at a time: https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-apps-number-of-computers.html When using the software on a shared PC (W10), are users automatically signed out of Adobe CC when they log off the PC? If not, are they eventually signed out of Adobe CC or do they remain signed in indefinitely? If the user forgets to sign out of Adobe CC, what happens when the next user of the shared PC logs in and launches Adobe CC? Presumably they don't have access to the previous user's Adobe CC account? If the user has left themselves signed into Adobe CC at home and have left the software running, will that prevent them from using the software at school? Is anyone using a mixture of Adobe user licenses and device licenses at school? Is there any benefit to doing so? For example using device licenses for student PCs and user licenses for staff? That's assuming staff are more likely to remember to sign themselves out than students :-)
  4. Yes, as per my original post. Our staff are getting prompted to verify their age (using a credit card), which even if they wanted to, they can't as the system doesn't permit them to.
  5. That is an interesting response from Google Support. I'm not sure it is correct though, as I myself (and a few other colleagues) are able to access age-restricted YouTube videos when signed in with our school Google Workspace accounts. I still believe that this is a bug. Google appear to be in the process of rolling this feature out, and it appears to be randomly affecting users. How else can one explain how some users can access these videos, and others can't. All have the same settings applied to them in the Google Admin console.
  6. Teaching staff and non-teaching staff are in separate OUs, but have the same settings applied to them in the Google Admin Console. All users in our domain have "Moderate Restricted YouTube access" applied, including staff. However we enabled the option "Verified Google Classroom teachers can approve videos", which gives teachers the equivalent of "Unrestricted YouTube access". According to Google, Restricted Mode and age-restricted videos are not the same. So we wouldn't expect the above settings to make any difference to age-restricted content: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7354993?hl=en#zippy=%2Cis-restricted-mode-the-same-as-age-gating-or-age-restricting-videos
  7. No, we are not running Lightspeed.
  8. I can confirm that all of our teachers are members of the classroom_teachers Google group.
  9. I am after some advice! Some of our staff are currently experiencing issues with certain YouTube videos that are age-restricted. This relates to the following announcement in September 2020: https://blog.youtube/news-and-events/using-technology-more-consistently-apply-age-restrictions Some of our staff are able to view age-restricted videos successfully. When they browse to the video they are prompted that "this video may be inappropriate for some users" and an option to confirm that "I understand and wish to proceed". The video subsequently loads without any issues. However some staff aren't able to view these age-restricted videos. When they browse to the video they are prompted to "verify your age" and an option to "verify". However when they choose this option they are taken to another page informing them that Google "can't verify age" and that their "Google Account isn't authorised to use Google Payments". Obviously our staff are not going to start entering their credit card details in order to verify their age (even if we were to turn on Google Payments), and I assume that this is a glitch. All of our staff are using their school Google Workspace for Education accounts. This happens both at the school and off the network. All staff have the same settings applied to their accounts via the Google Admin Console, and it is not possible to set a DOB (that I'm aware of). Has anyone else experienced similar behaviour? If so, did you manage to get around the issue? Here are two examples of videos that are age-restricted:
  10. I have just got off the phone to Google Cloud Support, and received a follow up email. They have confirmed that the issue is on their end "where the invites for Guardians are not being generated by our system for certain address and we are currently investigating this further at the moment trying to determine a root cause".
  11. Thanks for the info. We also are using Salamander for the Guardian invites. Regarding your second point, we have also manually removed guardians and then invited them again, to no avail. I have done this for a number of parents, and none of them have received the invites.
  12. Interesting! Just to clarify (from your experience)... Google Classroom is configured to send emails to an outlook.com email address. In this case the parent has a Gmail account that's signed in on the device they check their emails on (presumably a smart phone), and subsequently the email is getting delivered/diverted to their Gmail account as opposed to their outlook.com account? Is this for the initial invitation email (which is the problem we are experiencing) or the weekly/daily summaries?
  13. Thank you everyone for your replies so far. Just to confirm, the issue is that some parents are not receiving the initial email inviting them to receive weekly summaries. We have gone to a Classroom and chosen "remove guardians" for the parent in question, and "invite guardians" to re-invite them. This has made no difference, and the parent reports again not receiving the initial invitation email. This has affected in the region of 30-40 parents so far, all of which that have Hotmail or Yahoo email accounts, although perhaps many haven't reported the issue yet. I have asked some of the parents whether they have Google/Gmail accounts, but haven't heard back yet. @Ditto you mention logs showing the emails being received. Could you point me in the direction of where I would find these logs? As far as I can tell, the emails that are generated via Google Classroom (initial invitations and weekly summaries) are not logged in the usual "email log search" section of the admin console. @dhicks that sounds like a good workaround. We probably have too many affected parents to make that viable at this stage. @paulkerton that's interesting, thank you. I am trying to ascertain the unique circumstances for a few select parents so I can pin-point what's going on, and await their replies. One of the questions I have asked is whether they have a Google/Gmail account, and if so whether they are signed in on the device they use to check their Hotmail/Yahoo accounts.
  14. We recently set up Google Classroom email summaries for our parents, and in most circumstances the parents received the initial invitation and accepted without issue. However a number of parents have reported that they didn't receive the email. We have asked that they check their SPAM folder, but they advise that the email's definitely not arrived. There appears to be a pattern, and in most circumstances the parents are using either a Hotmail or Yahoo email account. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue, and were you able to resolve it? I read somewhere that perhaps the parent may also have a Gmail account, and that it is somehow linked to their Hotmail or Yahoo account. This isn't something we have managed to ascertain yet. Thank you in advance.
  15. Thank you for all the replies so far, and for your very useful feedback. @timbo343 – let’s hope Google are listening to all of the feedback from schools, and will make the necessary improvements. @highsky – thanks for the link. As far as I can see, neither the Meet quality tool nor the extension report on attendees to a livestream. It would certainly be nice for staff to know how many people are watching their livestream at any given time. @rogerdnixon – thank you for your comprehensive reply and all of your advice. In response to the first three points… Question 1 I think Google should make it clearer to schools that there are distinct differences between using Classroom and Google Calendar when arranging meetings with students. I will certainly be advising our staff to avoid scheduling meetings with students using Google Calendar, and using Classroom only. When using the Meet link in Classroom you have suggested that “when a class teacher leaves the kids are booted out”. However from my testing it appears that if a teacher leaves the meeting whilst there are still students in attendance, the meeting continues indefinitely until the students choose to leave. If the teacher is the last person to leave, students are unable to rejoin. Either way I guess this isn't a big issue. Question 2 Google have given schools the functionality to prevent students from creating their own meetings (https://support.google.com/a/answer/9784550#turn-on-meet-video-calling). However this is somewhat redundant if students are able to indefinitely reuse Meet URLs that they’ve been invited to via Google Calendar. Granted (I assume) they wouldn't be able to invite new participants, but they can still hold meetings with the original (student) participants whenever they like. Question 3 It’s good to know that recordings are not automatically shared with students when using Classroom. Teachers have no control over the initial sharing of recordings when scheduling meetings via Google Calendar, and from my testing they are automatically shared with all participants (including students) despite Google suggesting that this won’t happen if they’re in separate organizational units. Either Google need to fix the problem or amend their advice.
