Does Meraki need OSX Server running MDM to deploy the apps silently? I'm just looking at moving a site over from using Apple Configurator to Meraki (as that seems to be getting more traction than Configurator & seems a better solution (allowing us to deploy remotely).

Hi All I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on a question for me. I have a couple hundred Apple iPads currently managed by Meraki Systems Manager in our school. We currently use a free version which doesn't allow the use of Apple Classroom. As a school we have access to Office 365 and Microsoft Intune, which I've looked at changing to so we can use Apple Classroom. When looking at setting it up I found Apple Classroom requires Signed Certificates to enable it to work. So my question is.. Does anyone know an easy way to create certificates without having to buy them? Or perhaps is there a way around them, Meraki doesn't seem to require these certificates like Intune does. Any help or insight here would be fantastic Thanks in advance!

[ipad] 'iPad storage full' when recording or on iMovie
vdao posted a topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Hi all, We currently use Meraki MDM for our classrooms iPads, not sure if this is related. The issue is when recording videos or using the iMovie app a pop-up message appears 'iPad storage full - you do not have enough storage to record video' Having received this message, every iPad has approximately 15GB free storage. So not sure why this is happening any suggestions would be amazing. I have removed and reinstalled the app, used different accounts and i've had no luck. Many thanks -
Hi All We use Meraki Systems manager to manage the 100 iPads we have. For a year everything has been running smoothly. Last week I had to renew the Apple MDM cert. I followed the guide provided by Meraki and renewed the certificate, everything went smoothly.. until now Clients are not reporting in and when I view a client it says the push cert is non-compliant. I clicked "what is this" under neither and it reads "This device is using an outdated APNS topic and needs to be re-enrolled. I have tried to un-enrol the device, and then enrol it by following the instructions on the iOS deployment page". I tried this with 4 iPads and now they will not reenrol. I have tried deleting the clients and removing the Profile, to no avail. I'm hoping someone has some idea on a solution to this before I try adding a new cert and attempting to re-enrol all devices from there. Thank you in advanced to any help!

Hi All We've had a small issue with Students jail breaking their iPads. While this has been dealt with from a discipline point-of-view I'm trying to find someway to keep half an eye on whether the little darlings have jail broken their iPads or not. Hopefully within our MDM (Meraki). Can anyone point me in the right direction? Regards Simon

Hi all, I'm trying to get Airplay working on some Ipads (IOS 8 & 9) using AirServer. The Ipads are Meraki managed. They pick up AirServer on the PC fine but will not connect. If I remove the Meraki profile on the 'pad.... Guess what.... It works. I have no Airplay settings defined in Meraki and very few restrictions. Anyone ever come across this ?? Cheers in advance

Hi all, We are having an issue with one of our iPads. The iPad is running ios 8.0.2. We are trying to deploy a FileBrowser configuration file by assigning a user using Apple Configurator. However when we attempt to assign a user it fails if our Meraki Management profile option is ticked. The iPads are also taking a long time to refresh and check in/out. Has anybody else had any issue similar to this or have any ideas on how we might be able to resolve this? Thanks in Advance

I have a weird problem, keep in mind this school has been working fine with Meraki upto May 5th of this year. These are iPad Mini Gen1, and iPad 2's, so they are all on iOS9.3.5. For some reason, all iPads on the Meraki console are showing as offline, and not checked in since May5th. But, their GPS location is updating. I can't refresh profiles, app lists, or get activity. On the iPads it is letting me re-enroll the iPad in Meraki by using the m.meraki.com website, but it doesnt show this as connected on the Meraki console. On the network side of things, its a county smoothwall system, but I have seen the real-time filter and nothing is being blocked during this process. Also I can manually download apps via the App Store with no issues. I have tried static IP's, restarted our DNS and DHCP servers, I have gone direct to the proxy via IP. I have wiped the iPad fully, re-supervised it, installed Meraki and had the exact same problem. On the iPads I didnt wipe, and can still get into the Meraki App, I can see the app I just added today, hit it to download, and ... nothing! Although in the web filter it shows activity to the deployment site, but no app on the iPad. But the kicker, if I tether my phone to the iPad via a hotspot, everything works perfectly. Where could the problem be, if Meraki is setup fine. Filters are showing nothing being blocked, yet I can download from the App Store directly?

I'm starting to hate Meraki lol - their SSIDs aren't broadcasting to some laptops. Might not be a problem with the APs but still, I need help. The laptop can pick up other wireless networks in the area, including hotspots, but our SSIDs aren't showing up in the list of available networks. Tried Windows updates, tried driver updates, tried a reboot. Any help is much appreciated

Hi all, I'm currently trying to grapple with getting a deployment of 60 iPads for our primary school to work the way we want it. The school would like them set up so that Year 1 and 2 students can pick up an iPad, find their name under their class on the iPad lock screen, tap it and type in a 4 digit passcode to open their session. However, I'm struggling with this - Shared iPad shows up to a certain number of users on the home screen, but the students have to log in with their Apple ID and password in order for their names to then appear. In other words, it's not pre-populated with the classes and students, and the school don't want to make things complicated for the students by giving them Apple IDs and passwords for first time sign-in. To give you the rundown of what we've done so far: - iPads all listed in ASM - Accounts for all students created in ASM and assigned to their respective classes - DEP and VPP sorted between ASM and Meraki - Test iPad currently assigned to Meraki MDM with Shared iPad switched on. - Settings profile created for iPads to restrict functionality, and set up to automatically deploy to any iOS device assigned to Meraki In Meraki, there is an "Education Configuration" option for the settings profile to configure Apple Classroom, which can pull users and groups from ASM and (I hope) do what the school are asking for - However, I'm having issues with this added to the settings profile and I keep getting an error message when I try to push the profile to the iPad, so I haven't been able to test this properly. Regardless of this particular issue (a support ticket has been sent to Meraki), is this what I'm looking for? Has anyone else managed their iPad deployment through ASM and Meraki for their school? How did you do it? Thanks in advance!

We have a set of around 60 pupil and 20 staff iPads, all of which were supervised using AC, and then enrolled in Meraki, which we use to push out all free and paid apps. Each device has its own Apple ID. We aren't eligible for DEP, so that isn't an option. We've been reasonably happy with Meraki, but have found that on occasion we get prompted for passwords on each device, but now that the majority of the features need to be paid for, we need to move to a cheaper option. I've acquired quotes from all of the MDMs lsited on Apple's website, and the two most affordable are LightSpeed (which was also recommended by another school) and ZuluDesk (slightly more expensive.) Does anyone have strong recommendations for one over the other? The iPads are several generations old, and I suspect that they can't be updated to iOS 11, so having the latest features isn't necessarily the highest priority. In no particular order the priorities would be: * value for money * consistently pushing out paid and free apps with zero users interaction with individual devices * full control of restrictions, such as disabling iMessage I would welcome any feedback, as I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks!

Bit of a complicated one to explain but I work in education where we have over 200 iPads on one site. Each iPad managed through Meraki has an iTunes account so I can deploy apps accordingly. Last Feb I had 30 iPads brought back to me as messages kept coming up saying "iPad has been disabled" This was mainly appearing when doing to update or download apps. It caused a lot of problems to the extent I spent a long time on the phone with Apple trying to get 30 iPad accounts reactivated. Apple claim that either the iTunes account or my VPP account have problems but it's nothing to do with them. In the end and after many phone calls I decided to come up with a new naming standard and recreate all 30 accounts with new iTunes accounts. It's been working and brilliant until one of the newly imaged iPads has appeared on my desk with the same error happening. Apple tell me the accounts are fine, Meraki is fine, new accounts work all okay. I can't seem to think of anything someone could do on an iPad account to completely lock it down and prevent apple themselves from reactivating it.

Hi all, I work at a K-8 school and we are using Meraki by Cisco as our Mobile Device Management solution. This seems to be working just fine but with the release of iOS 7 we are trying to figure out how to use all of the new features included pertaining to MDM. We have about 300 iPad 2s deployed. The teachers would love to be able to use free apps and, using Apple's VPP, paid apps. Right now we have to manually enter any redemption code into Meraki and then on each and every iPad log in using the Apple ID and password associated with the license purchased. I am aware, via several sources, that Apple now allows you to "silently" install apps. How can we do this? Anyone have any other tips to help in the deployment of the apps with the new iOS 7 features? Thanks,Colby

Hi all, I am currently in the middle of setting up DEP for our school and have a couple of questions that I wonder if anyone could shed some light on. At the minute our current provision is this: 32 iPad Airs in a "bank" (shared devices) 10 SLT dedicated iPads ~15 staff dedicated iPads 25 iMac suite We are using Meraki (free) for our MDM solution and now want to use this in conjunction with DEP to automate the enrollment and deployment process. I have setup our DEP account with an Apple ID and 2-factor authentication (don't ask...) and our supplier has been linked to our DEP account so any new devices we buy will be preconfigured for DEP over-the-air deployment. Deployment process is as follows: User "unboxes" a brand new iPad and switches it on Setup wizard asks to join a wifi network (our BYOD network works fine) The iPads serial number is recognised as being "associated" with our organisation (as it is added by our supplier to our DEP account) The user is asked to authenticate with their AD credentials (not sure if this is 100% necessary but it works so oh well) A NON-REMOVABLE MDM profile is downloaded and installed onto the device (the only way you can stop users removing the root profile is through DEP apparently, thanks Apple... User is asked to sign in with an Apple ID Siri/iCloud setup screens iPad is ready to go. Can Profile Manager and Meraki be used simultaneously? In the profile Manager console, I am able to see the new device and put it into a group. I am also able to set restrictions (basically create a profile) and assign it to this group, however they never seem to be installed on the device. In the Active Tasks tab I am able to see the job waiting but it will be stuck on Pending forever. Why is this and does anyone know how I can force these settings to be pushed to the iOS device? The internet connection is fine and our iPad SSID doesn't use a proxy. Ideally we would like the process to be as streamlined as possible. So the steps detailed above, then an automatic install of our Meraki MDM profile, and VPP app assignment (the bane of my life). Does anyone know why our Profile Manager settings would be "pending" and not being pushed through?

I had Profile Manager set up by an Apple recommended re-seller (given a month to deploy 40 iPads, didn't have time to do it myself with the other projects I had ongoing). I have found it to be slow and unreliable so am looking at ditching it and using Meraki Systems Manager instead. So far everything seems to be working great, app deployment is much quicker than on Profile Manager, VPP took a little while to figure out but I think I've cracked it. I can't figure out how to deploy iBooks, they don't appear when searching for an app under MDM/Apps/Add new/iOS app or when using Lookup by ID and pasting the bundle ID from the iTunes App Store in. Is it possible to deploy iBooks with Systems Manager and if not, what do you recommend I use? Thanks

Hi all, I have around 180 supervised iPads enrolled to Meraki. I have around 100 free and paid apps that I'm managing via VPP. This set up was working just fine up until a few weeks ago when I noticed that some apps couldn't be pushed to some iPads and I was getting errors in the Activity Log saying that it can't find the license. I'm pretty sure though that when I had checked at the time, the licenses looked ok under VPP on Meraki. Maybe not! I finally got some time to look into it properly and now what I'm seeing is the following weird behaviour with ANY app - not just paid ones - with a scope other than All Users. When I turn off Auto grant/Auto revoke and use a User tag(s) with a scope of "With ANY of" I can see that it says at the top of a given app the correct number of Users in scope. When I turn on Auto grant the number of Users in scope changes to 0 so it doesn't grant the license to the chosen user group. I can go in and do it all manually, but with 100-something apps and 8 groups of iPads (1 per year group + staff) this is a major pain. Is this Cisco basically telling me that I need to pay to have the Auto grant feature? I had a look and as far as I could tell I shouldn't lose any features. Any help or ideas on what to look for would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi All, feel as though I have become Alice and decided to go down the rabbit hole. I am wanting to implement a BYOD network which filters students in relation to the Smoothwall group they are part of. This requires Radius, which is set up on the Internal NPS server. We implement a wireless network from Meraki and I wish to VLAN the BYOD network off from the main network. All VLANS terminate at the core switch and then are routed down a single VLAN between the core switch and MX Firewall. I have Radius set up on smoothwall and a VLAN'd secure network on Meraki, i just need to direct all traffic to the smoothwall login page, can anyone help? provide advise? tell me ive done it wrong and how to correct? Many Thanks David

Wondering if anybody has made the jump to UniFi UXG Pro Gateways at all? We are about to upgrade our internet connections across our 12 schools and for some are looking at 5Gbps connections as the costs are not much more now for this speed. However, the Smoothwall appliances are not capable of this amount of through-put and we've not been entirely happy with Smoothwall for a while now and are therefore looking at moving away from them. Plan would be to move to a cloud-based filtering product (with support for 1:1 devices which Smoothwall doesn't do, apart from their rubbish cloud offering) and we are currently involved in setting up trials with Securly, LightSpeed and potentially Senso. All our routing is pretty much done on the core Aruba 5400 switches so would only route Internet traffic through the Gateway. Have contacted both Meraki and Aruba to look at their Gateway offerings with SD-WAN capability (we site-site VPN all 12 schools) but the costs for the Meraki and Aruba gateways are ridiculous! No educational discount per say, just potentially a bonus free year for each year purchased. Looking into it we'd potentially need at least a Meraki MX450 with quoted pricing so far of around 15k for the appliance and £25k for a 1yr license! Now comes the UniFi UXG Pro... spec wise is pretty much on par with the MX450 and in some areas better. £500 and no yearly fee...! Yes I know support isn't the greatest and warranty is only for two years but I could buy many of these over the years if they go wrong and still not come anywhere near the price of the Meraki. We are looking at getting a technical support package through 4Gon for our UniFi wireless anyway to keep as banked time for when needed. Watched many reviews online and whilst the GUI isn't always the best, the general reviews of the firewall performance and security is on par with pfSense. Just wondering if anyone has gone for it and what the performance is like, reliability etc?
