Hiya, I was looking at making a JAMF rename script which would rename our macs on enrollment or on check-in (once per "computer" or Mac rather!). I remember somewhere I used to be at a big complicated script that renamed it based on a spreadsheet and you had to have a file-share to the csv and setup permissions etc which for people less experienced in Macs and JAMF might be a bit of a pain! I made something which and easy in a sense in about 30 mins and I wanted to share as might help you with your mac deployments and renaming process... I've put a basic one for rename one mac, but the idea is you use the script (but just replicate by copying and pasting section "2a" for each mac you have)... How it works is section "2a" creates a MATCHED=Y value and a NEW_NAME variable IF a serial number match is found. The bit in section 3 then runs the rename script if the MATCHED and NEW_NAME variables are created in section 2a. " #!/bin/bash # 1 - Get the Mac's serial number SERIAL=$(system_profiler SPHardwareDataType | awk '/Serial Number/{print $4}') echo $SERIAL # 2 - List TTA Mac Names and there serial numbers in query below. # 2a - Compare Mac Serial and Mac Asset and if match is found then rename the mac using scutil script # Room: T9 if [[ "$SERIAL" == "<** ONE OF YOUR MAC SERIALS **>" ]]; then MATCH="Y" NEW_NAME="<*** NAME OF WHAT YOU WANT THIS MAC TO BE CALLED ***>" echo "This mac matches a mac in the list!" else echo "Not this one!" fi # 3 - Rename Mac using below script if a match is found if [[ "$MATCH" == "Y" ]]; then echo $NEW_NAME scutil --set ComputerName "$NEW_NAME" scutil --set HostName "$NEW_NAME" scutil --set LocalHostName "$NEW_NAME" # Flush DNS cache (optional) dscacheutil -flushcache echo "We are renaming this mac now." else echo "This mac didn't match any assetted serial numbers" fi " Hope this helps people and perhaps just restart the mac as a box ticking task!

Hi, for the last year we have been using Apple School Manager and Jamf without any issues. Now for some reason Apps will not install on our iPad's, can't get any support from Jamf something to do with our licence! Recently purchased AR Makr app in ASM, they've appeared in Jamf and I've given them the scope of iPad's I want it installed on and all iPad's are stuck in Installing, with this message In this state, we are waiting for an update from the device. Never had this issue before and can't seem to find anything about it! Thank you

Is there any way to prevent access to certain applications on Macs, but only when an account in a specific AD group is logged in? We have Jamf Pro, and it has a Restricted Software function, but this only functions system-wide, i.e. an app is either restricted for everyone or unrestricted. We'd like to be able to do something around exam accounts, e.g. preventing exam accounts from being able to use Safari or Chrome but leaving these apps available for any other type of user. Our Macs are all bound to AD as well as being enrolled in Jamf Pro. Thanks, Dan Jackson (Senior ITServices Technician) Long Road Sixth Form College Cambridge, UK.

Hi All Were looking at managing a suite of 50 imacs and 20 ipads. Do we need to invest in Jamf to dish out settings, apps and updates or can Intune handle these things? We already have Intune as part of our campus agreement but wondered if it was an good with Apple products. Most of the places i've looked mention Jamf as the way to go but at a considerable cost. Any comments greatly appreciated. S

Hi all, We have a bank of around 120 iPads ranging from iPad Air 2 up to iPad (8th gen) - all controlled through JAMF For those iPads that are assigned to one user (class teachers) a fair few of them are losing Wi-Fi connection after a few minutes or each time the device is locked/restarted, we have not had this issue on any shared device. Wi-Fi works for all other devices in the school with no issues. Solutions tested: Updating to the latest IOS - X Wiping the device completely and reinstalling user profiles - X Pushing profiles containing Wi-Fi credentials back out to the device - X Manually inputting Wi-Fi credentials to each iPad - X Testing a different Wi-Fi - X Each of these allows connection for a few minutes but then experiences the same issue of it completely dropping out as before, any other suggestions are welcome as this is getting difficult for class teachers to use their devices on a daily basis.

Hi We've previously used Jamf as our MDM solution but are now moving to InTune. We would create classes and add the students to the classes using Apple School Manager. Then the students would sign in to their 1:1 iPads with their Apple ID (using their school email address) and they would be automatically associated with their class. Does this differ with the iPads being managed by InTune - or can we still do the same by creating the classes in ASM and then getting the students to sign into their iPads using their Apple IDs (using their school email address)? Do we have to create classes in InTune? Or can we continue creating classes in ASM? Thanks in advance.

Hi guys, I've been asked to setup 20 new Macs with Jamf, both of which I have never looked at until 2 weeks ago! Complete beginner when it comes to Mac's, so apologies for what may seem like daft questions! AD accounts can log on etc, they can access their home areas on the Windows network. At the moment, I can save on the desktop with my test account and I noticed GarageBand creates it's own folder locally to save to as well, rather than saving it to the home area. Can I restrict access to saving locally on the macs and redirect anything that needs saving to their network areas? Thanks in advance :-)

We're in a bit of a sticky situation here... We are currently using NoMAD for the login screen across our Mac estate. We only installed it last summer to move away from treachurous AD binding. A few months down the line we realised that when staff change student passwords in AD, it won't sync the new password to the local accounts on all the Macs that user has signed into previously. We have looked at a few solutions like JAMF Connect, which advertises a password syncing feature.. but that only works if you change the password using Connect's password utility. There's no way staff will use this, and we can't prevent password changes in AD. This blew a massive hole in the ship! If anyone here has faced this exact situation, please pass on any advice on solutions to this, as I'm a bit stuck for ideas. Following recent renewal of our Jamf Pro license, our reseller managed to do some outstanding negotiations.. and got JAMF Connect included free of charge, so it's there is we want to use it, but still a few hurdles to get over. tried writing a script to do the password sync, but realised we can't be the only organisation with this issue, and there's no need to re-invent the wheel! Any tips, please share!

We have a fleet of iPads which are supervised with Jamf. The iPads are locked to Safari with kiosk mode and the students are only allowed access to certain websites. Every so often though an iPad comes into our office which has been completely reset by a student. Profile removed and PIN added is the usual thing they do. How can they do this though when the iPad is managed and is in kiosk mode? We can't seem to replicate the issue. Almost seems like the kids are taking them home and resetting them although we have an activation lock to. Anyone any ideas how the kids could be doing this?

Hi all, Has anybody recently migrated from an MDM, to a new one? I am looking at ditching Lightspeed LSMDM, and moving elsewhere, probably Jamf. Mainly due to the price per device per year. I've also thought Lightspeed's customer support, and lack of updates since buying in to them in 2016 has been really poor! (I did hear from our reseller that Lightspeed are mainly focusing on their Security filtering and less bothered about keeping LSMDM cutting edge). Unfortunately our Lightspeed licence has ran out over half term, so I have no access to the console. However, I imagine all iPads will need manually resetting one by one regardless? We're a 2 form entry Primary, over 400 pupils, currently have between 250 and 300 iPads (thanks DfE scheme!). Looking for pointers in what direction to go with this, if anyone has been in a similar position, any advice would be greatly appreciated! A

We've recently been contacted by a parent asking if there is a simple way to block sites at home, just like they're blocked by our filtering system at the school. Of course, our iPads are in an MDM, Jamf specifically, and I've had a quick look but couldn't see any way of blacklisting sites through there (if anyone could prove me wrong that would be brilliant). Does anyone have a solution to this query? This would of course be helpful for the school, but we can't think of an easy way to get this implemented, other than giving parents guidance on individual home network providers. Any help at all is welcome. Thank you

Hi all! First time posting but need some advice. We want to get Rekordbox on all of our Macs, we're currently using Jamf School to distribute any software but it looks as though Rekordbox doesn't appreciate that so much and instead gives an .exe file to use to download it. With how tedious and long of a process it'd be to download it individually on every machine, is there any way using jamf to have this download on all devices instead of having to do it one by one? Thanks all!

We recently installed new Macs with JamF School MDM. An issue with are having is students are not logging off or only locking their machines at the end of the lesson. The next student logs in then tries to open GarageBand only to be presented with an error that GarageBand cannot be opened as it is in use by another user. They cannot restart the Mac as it requires the signed in user to input their credentials.I have logged a ticket with our Mac solutions provider but all they could suggest is to put a configuration in place to force the Macs to logout after a certain period of inactivity, obviously not ideal for a number of reasons.Has anyone found a workout for this issue?

hi the company who now supports our IT in school wants to blitz our existing ipads and use Jamf to manage them. All well and good except we have copies of a very expensive app installed and apparently there is a problem because the app is associated with an apple ID and jamf doesn't support Apple ID's. Has anyone else come across this and is there a fix?? I am in contact with the developers of the app but don't hold out much hope that they will be able to help. TIA Christine

Hello, I am having an issue when i am trying to push apps to a group of iPads on Jamf. I get failure with the attached error message. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks in advance for any suggestions! David

Hi all, Wanted to know if anyone is encouintering the same issue as me. working on a new big sur mac image for next year. big sur doesn't seem to b playing ball when binded to AD. issues with profiles. when i login as different accouunts i have the issue where an apple popup comes up saying "mdm/profiles wants to make changes". it asks me to enter an admin password to do this so i do and then big sur deletes all the profiles and ca certs and then the mac is unenrolled. has anyone seen this or aware of a fix? Macs are enrolled with jamf.. this is where the profiles are deployed from. help would be much appreciated. Mat

I disabled WiFi privacy last week after seeing a thread on here. However, since this our iPads have been failing to check in with JAMF school. After some Googling and testing it seems that this is a direct result of disabling WiFi privacy. Upon connecting to an SSID which has WiFi Privacy enabled everything seems to work fine. I have a secondary SSID which I keep disabled for this kind of scenario, however, I'm unable to get the iPads to connect to this over the primary, I would disable our primary SSID over night and hope that the devices check in given time. However, we're a residential school so doing this would kick the kids and staff off over night Has anyone else come across this?

Hello, We are in the process of moving MDM from LightSpeed to Jamf School. For the most part, Jamf has been a far better experience, but I'm still finding my way around to some degree. This year all new iPads have been assigned to Jamf via Apple School Manager and we have transferred sufficient app licenses away from LightSpeed to Jamf to cover these. All this has worked without a problem. I've set up Device Groups for our staff and students and deployed apps to those groups. I can add devices to the appropriate groups and they get the apps installed. The apps all show up under Managed Apps on that device in Jamf. So far so good. However if I remove a device from the group, only a few of the apps are then marked for removal from the device, and none of the licenses are revoked. There is no way I can see to remove an app or license other than by removing the device from the group, except it doesn't seem to be doing this for the majority of the apps installed. I've checked that the licenses are being assigned to the device and not the user, and gone as far as erasing a device completely, after which Jamf shows all the apps have now gone, but still has all the licenses assigned to that device. I'm a bit puzzled, unsure if I'm missing something here because I'm new to Jamf, or something isn't working as it is supposed to. Some of the apps we use are paid-for and we only have a limited number of licenses, so at some point the need to revoke them from devices is going to become a real problem if we can't find a way to do this. Any help would very much appreciated. Best regards, Dan

Anyone bought any licences for either of the above recently? If so, how much did you have to pay? School currently has 60 iPads on Mosyle free and want another 60. I'm assuming that they'll want paying as the current free limit is 30 - maybe we joined the gang when it was higher? Or does anyone have any recommendations? We could use Intune, but that has yet to be set up and every time I start to loo at it I get brain ache. Used to have Lightspeed but I found it very clunky.
