⭐ Vertical tabs have finally arrived in Google Chrome! 👀 I've been using the Arc and Zen browsers for a while now and I found the vertical tabs feature really cool. Whilst Google Chrome isn't my main brownser, it's great to see it now available as an option in Google Chrome, especially for those times when I have to use it! 🥳 To enable this feature straight away: 1️⃣ Make sure your version of Google Chrome is up to date 2️⃣ Browse to chrome://flags 3️⃣ Search for Vertical Tabs 4️⃣ Set to Enabled 5️⃣ Relaunch Google Chrome 6️⃣ Right click on the tab bar 7️⃣ Select "Move tabs to the side" ⬅️ You can also collapse the tab bar for a minimal look and view more of the webpage.

DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS support is coming to Apple devices this fall. https://www.techradar.com/news/apple-devices-will-get-encrypted-dns-in-ios-14-and-macos-11

I asked this in the Windows 10 forum but my manager pointed out we also need to be able to support Mac users. We wanted to sign up with TeamViewer as we've used it in the past but we've tried to contact them about the nonprofit discount and had no response, so we're looking at alternatives. Basically we want something that will allow us to provide remote IT support both to organisation owned and personal computers. Does anyone have any recommendations? It needs to be something that doesn't require admin rights or prior deployment/installation to run (TeamViewer has its QuickSupport that people can just download and use straight away, so something that can work like that would be good). Also needs to not require any firewall faffing around.

Hi all, Trying to make a macOS Monterey bootable USB as I've managed to lock myself out/brick a device using JAMF. All seems to go okay when make the install but when I try to boot from it, it just comes up with that no entry sign and reboots. I've then tried to now make a Big Sur install but it keeps throwing up an error about 'the bless of the installer disk failed'. Tried it on 3 different USBs now and can't find anything useful online! I'm making the bootable installs on our Mac server which is on Sierra. Thanks

Has anyone got any experience of using intune with Macs? Specifically joining them to Hwb managed Intune and allowing students to log in with their hwb credentials?

I know this will be a loaded and detailed question but I’m curious where others sit with regards to their research, testing and the future of their Mac Management in Education and Enterprise? Our Background: We’re primarily a PC College with a small footprint of about 500 Apple computers Currently macOS 10.12 with 10.13 planned for summer deployment Windows and Mac user credentials based on Active Directory Profile Manager (Handling printers, custom settings, power management etc.) Munki (Software Deployment, App Updates, Odd scripts that’re packaged to deploy with Admin rights) Windows based servers with Azure AD (w/InTune) Microsoft SCCM coming into play college wide this summer Our Goal moving Forward: Ability to Image/Manage Macs (Manage Macs running APFS and future macOS’s) SCCM tie in for reporting of software, hardware and other features Ability to push out packages, application updates and macOS updates Ability to deploy and run scripts with ease Local Admin user control (similar idea to LAPS) * I know this is still a new idea for Macs What’re we looking for? With APFS coming into play it’s rumored that when macOS 10.14 is released APFS will be enforced which will be helped along when new hardware that is revised after macOS 10.14 is released. We want a solution that will handle pushing possible base OS, additional software, app installs/updates, macOS updates, scripts, reporting and general setting changes. What we’ve tested/demoed? So far we’ve sat in on demo sessions for JAMF Pro and Parallels Mac Management. So far from a SysAdmin perspective when it comes to SCCM and Mac Management it seems like Parallels has an edge over JAMF for integration. Integrating into SCCM looks almost seamless with reporting and being able to control the Macs. JAMF to me has always seemed to be the top tier Mac Management solution from reading reviews, Reddit and online forums but maybe with the need of Casper being pushed out with the enforcement of Profiles and APFS that top spot has gone down? The need to Install/Image a fresh Base macOS What options are sysadmins using to put a fresh base macOS in place? I know Recovery can install a base OS but if a lab needs a new base OS that can be a heavy demand on bandwidth. Upgrading OS’s year after year seems to be a little less liked than starting with a fresh OS to then build on that with added applications, settings and updates. I never liked upgrading OS’s and I would prefer not to unless there’s no option to easily install a base OS. There are a few tools out there like Imagr that I'm looking into for this purpose. Anyways I know this is a rather detailed post and a bit winded but if you have any input that would be greatly appreciated! I’m continuing to do my research and to evaluate our options but I’m always open and looking to see what others have done and what seems to work. Thank you everyone for your feedback!

Hi folks, I'm not expecting anyone to have answers this but I'm desperate to find some sort of solution and hoped a discussion might lead to an epiphany here! Basically, I'm currently in the process of testing out High Sierra with the eventual goal of upgrading our now old Mac network still operating on OS X Mavericks 10.9. Having solved the initial problem of Profile Manager not pushing out preferences (thanks to DNS issues!), I've now set off with the main task of looking at Open Directory itself. All fine so far, and I've worked out how to get network home folders from a share, however the bizarre issue is that macOS Server will not create the home folder in the share when I create users! Which is a bit of a problem because no home folder = no library = chaos... Has anyone come across this so far and know any way around it? I know High Sierra is still new but I'm hoping there might be some idea from Sierra or something I can try! Fingers crossed.

Hi All How do you go about imaging any Macs you have? I have read lots about NetInstall/Restore, but that's very old now and doesn't seem to work. I have heard of Deploy Studio but last time I tried to use that it just wouldn't work, though I think that may be worth another go. I'm curious as to what you use, and any recommended reading you may know of, as imaging Macs seems to be poorly documented online, and anything there is, seems to be aimed at the home user. Thanks

Hi everyone. I've got that same old story- Macs were bought as part of a secondary school music dept newbuild and after 9 years of use are EoL. We're not looking to stay in the ecosystem because of cost. The thing I'm struggling with is a concensus as to what is a suitable replacement to Logic Pro is in schools- I'm pretty sure the answer is Cubase (far from our head of music's favourite), but it seems that Ableton, FL Studio, Studio One.. maybe Reaper.. all have some popularity too. Which do your schools use and why? Anyone out there sticking with Logic? Thanks in advance!

Hello, Please can someone advise where i may be going wrong. I have copied a file called "ESSADB2020.png" to the clients desktop which succeeded. Now i'm trying to set that file to be the users desktop through a ARD unix command. Here is my code; osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to set desktop picture to "~/Desktop/ESSADB2020.png" as POSIX file' Which retrieves the following error. 33:48: execution error: Finder got an error: AppleEvent handler failed. (-10000) If there's a better way to do then, any suggestions are much appreciated thanks! PS. Please bare with, new to ARD and sending unix commands.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot why a Mac won't shut down or restart (without forcibly holding down the power button)? We're pretty sure the cause is some software or configuration profile or setting we have installed, as it doesn't happen on a clean macOS with only Jamf and Sophos endpoint on it, but trying removing things and adding them back on one by one hasn't illuminated the culprit. Is there any log file or "log show" predicates that would help us isolate the cause of this? We're running macOS Monterey, mainly Intel Macs but I have also observed the issue on an M1 Mac Mini. One interesting artefact we noticed is that if we use the Shut Down or Restart buttons from the login window, we briefly see the Fast User Switching animation before the login window comes back again. We're aware that wiping and upgrading/reinstalling macOS will probably make the problem go away but we'd really like to locate the root cause as this category of issue keeps coming back.

Helloo, not sure if anyone can help, but the past month across our whole deployment of 1000 Macs, we've been getting specific pages blocked at random 'Due to a filtering service problem'. These are fully allowed at the top level. We've had a Lightspeed engineer check over our deployment on Jamf, remote onto a machine, and all appears correct. At this time they're unsure of whats causing it. The issue happens more frequently when going to links without 'www.' in the URL. Such as 'https://amazon.co.uk/' will be blocked, but 'https://www.amazon.co.uk/' will be allowed, despite traffic in relay saying its allowed to both. Then there is a long list of sites we've got where both options do not work. We've tried different DNS servers, and get the same thing. Our Windows and Chrome devices are all working fine. Enabling the 'bypass rules on failure' does get it working correctly, but we don't want that option enabled for security reasons. Its at the point where we've now got the whole school on our back about it... Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Hi All, Wondering if anyone else has come across this issue. Seems to be that any student on a MAC device cannot download or zip any files on their google drive. They can download the files on other devices (windows, chromeOS) but seems to be blocking them when they're on a MAC. We have tried updating permissions to the folders and also installing a new chrome version on the MAC aswell as clearing cache and cookies. Started with newer MAC's but has now spread to all ages. Has anyone else had this issue? Any help would be amazing. Kind Regards -verysmartbenn

Hi, I've found a script (below) to change the setting in Big Sur to enable the right mouse click on our 'magic' mice (the ones that you can't charge and use at the same time). It runs perfectly fine, and changes the tick box in the system settings menu, but unless I toggle it manually, it doesn't take effect. (new users and existing users). Is there anything else that I can add to make it work? Many Thanks, CP #!/bin/sh# Turn on right-click for mouse and trackpadfor USER_TEMPLATE in "/Library/User Template"/* do if [ ! Hi All, Just making everyone aware of the changes Microsoft are implementing that will affect Mac devices if they are bound to AD. Microsoft have recently announced that they will depreciate the use of LDAP during a required security update in March 2020. This is to further to the Microsoft Advisory ADV190023 announced in August 2019. Full details of the recent update announcement can be found here. Microsoft will force all traffic over the more secure LDAPS protocol which by default will not be supported by your Apple Mac estate if they are bound to Active Directory.
