Hi Everyone, Have an issue where I am unable to send Profile Manager commands over the internet. For example, I can send Profile Manager commands over the LAN normally. I can enable lost mode, update device info etc.. But when it comes to doing it to a managed device that's been taken off site or tethered to my iPhone, when sending a command from the profile manage console it just sticks in the job queue and nothing happens. When I check the php.log I can see the jobs I requested when the iPad was on the LAN but I am not able to see the jobs that I requested when the iPad was taken off site or tethered to my iPhone. I've spoken to our ISP who manages the ports and they have assured me that all necessary ones for Profile Manager have been opened up. I've tried my best to troubleshoot why this may not be working but i'm at a loose end. Anyone out there who is able to lend a hand?

I've slogged my way through Apple Configurator 2's not-quite-intuitive process of iPad building and had everything work properly for the thirty-or-so iPads in school, but it was a right pain to have it constantly downloading iOS and Apps for every single iPad it built, time and time again. So I looked into what the solution would be, purchased MacOS Server and set up the caching server. After a couple of teething problems to do with firewalls, it started working and caching all the iOS and app builds. I deployed my usual blueprint and the iPads started to build. Hurrah, I thought. Until it started doing this: Why are some of these blacked out? I wondered. I looked deeper into one of the folders to find...this: Tapped on one in the hope it would begin installing. No luck. Deleted it and reinstalled it by downloading it directly from the App store: it worked. But I don't really want to do this for every. single. app. on every single iPad: the whole point of setting up Apple Configurator with a caching server was to reduce the amount of time I had to spend with the iPads, not increase it. So the only thing that has changed between iPads building successfully and not is the addition of MacOS Server. So I cleared out the cached files and tried again. Same result. I disabled the caching server entirely: same result. I tried adding one of the greyed-out apps directly through the Add > App option in Configurator 2: that worked fine. So why the heck are they all 'waiting' when other apps aren't, and why do they pull directly down from the App store on the iPad OK but not through Configurator 2 all of a sudden? I have two apps which fail to install on the older iPads because they require a later iOS version, but Configurator warns me about those and I just skip them without any issue. Is it the pre-MacOS Server blueprint I'm using - does that need updating now there is a caching server? Technical bits: I have a mixture of iPads in school ranging from iPad 2s (capped at iOS 9.3.5) to Air 2s (ongoing support). iMac running macOS Sierra 10.12.5 MacOS Server v.5.3.1 Apple Configurator 2 v2.4 No MDM Server: iPads come back to the office to be adjusted Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi folks, I'm not expecting anyone to have answers this but I'm desperate to find some sort of solution and hoped a discussion might lead to an epiphany here! Basically, I'm currently in the process of testing out High Sierra with the eventual goal of upgrading our now old Mac network still operating on OS X Mavericks 10.9. Having solved the initial problem of Profile Manager not pushing out preferences (thanks to DNS issues!), I've now set off with the main task of looking at Open Directory itself. All fine so far, and I've worked out how to get network home folders from a share, however the bizarre issue is that macOS Server will not create the home folder in the share when I create users! Which is a bit of a problem because no home folder = no library = chaos... Has anyone come across this so far and know any way around it? I know High Sierra is still new but I'm hoping there might be some idea from Sierra or something I can try! Fingers crossed.

Hi all, Around 4 years ago we purchased a Mac solution from a third-party which consisted of 16 iMac clients & a Mac Mini as a Server. These were setup by the third-party and a mac-savvy colleague who no longer works at our school. The Macs were bound to our Windows Server Active Directory so that the students could log in with their normal credentials. This solution has worked perfectly fine for the past 4 years up until recently – our mac server has been showing signs of dying and becoming unreliable. Our colleague who was skilled with Macs left around 2 years ago and it had been the intention of myself and our Network Manager to train ourselves to compensate for this drop in a vital skill-set, though because of time / budget / 1million other things to do, this unfortunately never happened. We currently have a support contract that is unable to help us because the Operating System that is running on the Server is too old (Mountain Lion). With the summer holiday coming up, we have decided to abandon the current Mac Server which was configured by a third-party and completely re-do our Mac Network ourselves. Fortunately, we inherited a decently specced iMac that we can use as a new server. Our goal is to run a Mac solution that we fully understand and are familiar with. Our goals for this project can be encapsulated by these 3 bullet points; Upgrade the inherited iMac to the latest Operating System, install MacOS Server and have this replace our old Mac Server. We would configure all the basics as needed then we will be primarily looking at Open Directory & Profile Manager. Create an image of a Client iMac after it’s had an Operating System upgrade as well as all the software that students require. It will also be bound to our AD Server, same as before, so that students are able to log in with their network credentials. I want to ensure that this client can be fully controlled by the Server Mac. This image will then be deployed to all the client iMacs Have a reliable backup system (most likely Time Machine) Our skills are predominately with Windows systems though we hope that seeing this project through, with the acknowledgement it may be a bumpy journey, will be greatly rewarding. I would be extremely grateful to anyone willing to help in what I would see as a “Help the noob” style thread. I will (and have already started) going through the process of setting up the Mac Server & all the clients over these next couple of weeks (over Summer) and will get stuck from time to time – when this happens I’d love for this thread to be my go-to place should a portion of googling not resolve the issue. I am currently at the stage where I have upgraded the New iMac server to the latest version of Sierra and installed MacOS Server. I have set a static IP address and given it a Host Name and have tried to create a new Open Directory domain, but I am met with the following error when trying to create a Directory Administrator; "This computer's host name is invalid. The host name does not resolve to any configured address of this computer. Please ensure the host name is correct." Google-fu hasn't helped me with this one so far -- does anyone have any ideas for this? Thanks for reading. Kind regards, Nick
