Morning All, We're currently in the process of testing Windows 10 for students (we already have some staff testing it for us who are giving helpful feedback), for students we would like to stick with a Mandatory profile, mainly because it is easier to manage one profile rather than 4000+ roaming profiles, and it is quick to log on. I have configured a Mandatory profile for Windows 10 and assigned it to our test student account, however when logged on with this profile the user's start menu does not open, the action centre doesn't work, nor does Cortana.. has anybody else experience this? If so, have you found a fix? Cheers

Two staff have this morning come to the office with laptops that have blank local profiles, despite being in use since September. Desktop contents, web history, Outlook profile, tile preferences all gone. I've not seen this before without it being at my behest! Both state Friday afternoon as the last time it was working, with one discovering the issue Saturday morning, the other this morning after not working over the weekend. Updates not a factor. Anyone know where I can start looking for solutions? I'm working through System and Application event logs, and nothing in the User Profile Service log aside from normal information entries. Edit: Windows Defender AV, nothing special.

Is there any way to prevent access to certain applications on Macs, but only when an account in a specific AD group is logged in? We have Jamf Pro, and it has a Restricted Software function, but this only functions system-wide, i.e. an app is either restricted for everyone or unrestricted. We'd like to be able to do something around exam accounts, e.g. preventing exam accounts from being able to use Safari or Chrome but leaving these apps available for any other type of user. Our Macs are all bound to AD as well as being enrolled in Jamf Pro. Thanks, Dan Jackson (Senior ITServices Technician) Long Road Sixth Form College Cambridge, UK.

Hello all Just had a mac server setup with Profile Manager installed- we're using it to manage a suite of macs. Currently having issues sending email invites to users so they can download some VPP apps. The invites currently don't arrive, I've read the SMTP logs and I can see that the issue is related to LGFL needing to configure a relay for us. The issue I'm having is that the address that Profile Manager is using is '[email protected]'. How or where can I change the domain of this sender address? Atomwide want me to give them an address to use but I can't figure out how to set this for Profile Manager. Any guidance is very much appreciated! Thanks - Rory.

Right, found a weird one that can occour when people inpropperly kill a Vista machine with multiple users logged in and have posted here for refference. When it is killed impropperly it can leave a chunk of data in the registry, when this happens it attempts to use rewrite the original registry which it does not have access to do. The key involved is located here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ and will take the form of a network SID with .bak appended to the end. When this is present it will mess up the logon process and cause the user to always logon with a temporary profile. To solve this both the .bak key and the identical SID key if present. You should also check the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\SessionData under each number to make sure that the system has not held sessions for the offending user account, the best idea is to delete each of the numbered keys under here that refference the offending user which should after a reboot resolve the issue.

Hi We are having some pretty major issues with roaming profiles at the moment and I wondered if anyone had some advice.... We are getting approx 50 users come in per day asking for their profiles to be reset because they are corrupted. It's not a permissions issue as far as I can tell because the problem has only been in the last couple of months but has been working for 6 months prior to that with only the occasional problem. I've installed the UPHClean fix from the very beginning but this doesn't seem to help. The station GPO's are configured to not cache the local profile (i.e. delete at logoff) This seems to be working ok on the stations I have checked. Any ideas anyone? This is driving me nuts at the moment

Morning All, I'm in the process of setting up printers on Group Policy, this is my first time doing it in an environment using Roaming Profiles. The problem is, when a user logs on to a machine with a printer targetted to the machines' OU, that printer installs, but when the user logs off and logs on to another machine in a different OU they get the printer targetted to that OU too, so eventually the user will have every printer available installed, instead of just the ones relevant to the room they are in. I have tried adding 'Delete All' to the policy (see attached screenshot) and putting it at number 1 in the order but it still doesn't work reliably.. Any advise would be great please! Cheers Scott

I'm having trouble getting staff users logged on to our schools new Windows 7 machines. Currently (on our winXP machines) users logon to a shared profile as managed through AD with the user profile paths all pointing to the same file. Write access to this profile is restricted. Our server is Windows Server 2008. Once a Windows 7 machine is added to the network and put on the domain any staff that logon are given a temporary profile that is deleted once logged off. I'm not sure where the issue lies, but this is not a simple "Go in and delete the profile" issue, because users do not have profiles there to delete. I have tried switching off temporary profiles through the default group policy, which just leaves users with a "Windows Profile Logon Service" error once their username/password is entered. Do I need to change something with our old shared profile to make it Windows 7 compliant? Are there other reasons why Windows 7 would not like our current setup? Once our users can logon I will then look into restricting access to the local machine, as our preferred way of working is to keep all the data on our server and backed up, users are given a home directory that is on a network drive. This is giving me a real headache since i'm replacing all our old WinXP machines with Win7 machines while trying to keep the setup the same. Thank you for any help.

Hi all, I'm currently investigating if it is possible to have students profiles roam with them in our school network. Currently we do not use roaming profiles, (too much network traffic), and we have no interest in projects like Weave (too much internet traffic, and not the direction of the school). What we need is a way to have users bookmarks, tabs, etc, follow them around the school, and possibly a way to insert an unchangeable section into everyone's bookmarks containing read only bookmarks. I know this last one may not be possible 'yet'. Anyway, what I think may solve the problem for me at this stage is to create a GPO that redirects '%APPDATA%\Mozilla' to each users home directory. IS THIS POSSIBLE??? That's my main question at this stage, as that's the path I can see will solve the problem. Any other ideas anyone?

Hello all. We use cubase for music lessons and have incorporated it's profile requirements into the student mandatory profile. Trouble is it's massive and students not needing to use the music PC's have to wait to download this massive profile when logging in. Is there a way to state that if using a music PC, load this profile else load normal profile. By the way, my scripting is terrible, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks Graeme

Hello, We are having an issue with Sage Payroll (v21) when we try to use it with Mandatory Profiles on Windows 7, If we use a roaming profile it works fine however we need to make the change to Mandatory profiles for students. When we fire up Sage Payroll on a machine with a user that has a mandatory profile Sage Payroll will start in restricted mode Has anyone else ran into this issue and did you find a fix for it? Thanks

Hi, lurked for a while, signed up today! The issue I'm having is we have a classroom using a lapsafe, running 12 laptops all trying to go through a wireless access point. This room happens to be next to a house that has an unsecured wireless connection. What happens is the laptops seem to keep going to either one connection, a lot of time the unsecured network - the unsecured access point must be way more powerful than our access point in the same room. The students are not able to log into the domain a lot of the time, even though the wireless is turned on and signifying that it is working. The college access point is of course saved onto the laptops as the default connection for these computers. Is there any way we can somehow 'lock' the one wireless connection to each laptop? So it refuses to join the unsecured network no matter what? Cheers!

Grant User Group Permission on User Profile Folders using "icacls" script
Guest posted a topic in Scripts
Hi im currently trying to save myself hours worth of work by adding permsions to user profile folders so that teachers can access the students work from a drive map. I have 100+ Users i need to add a group permission to their "Desktop" "Documents" "Music" "Video" "Favorites" User folder I have a txt document that currently reads the following icacls "E:\Pupil Profiles\Users\User.V2\Desktop" /grant "Drive_PupilProfilesDrive":(OI)(CI)(M,DC) icacls "E:\Pupil Profiles\Users\User.V2\Documents" /grant "Drive_PupilProfilesDrive":(OI)(CI)(M,DC) icacls "E:\Pupil Profiles\Users\User.V2\Music" /grant "Drive_PupilProfilesDrive":(OI)(CI)(M,DC) icacls "E:\Pupil Profiles\Users\User.V2\Pictures" /grant "Drive_PupilProfilesDrive":(OI)(CI)(M,DC) icacls "E:\Pupil Profiles\Users\User.V2\Videos" /grant "Drive_PupilProfilesDrive":(OI)(CI)(M,DC) Pause im wanting to apply the group "Drive_PupilProfilesDrive" permissions to access the folders. i have tried the command prompt and works fine. is there any way of adding *.V2 to the script so that it will apply to every student in the Users folder? is that possible from this?- 13 replies

We have roaming profiles for all users in our school and occasionally, a few users log in to a computer to experience a blank desktop with no icons? Any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be much appreciated! There are no error messages. The issues only plague the user rather than the computer. Thanks !

Hi all, don't you love roaming profiles? Right well we have a 2008 R2 system using Roaming profiles. Each student is setup to \\servername\logons$\%username% and the same is for the GPO setting in Computers\User Profiles to point to the same path. Some google sites have suggested that it should be \\servername\logons$\%username%\ (with that extra back slash at the end). I am correct in asuming that Roaming profiles take their settings from GPO and no - pre build profile is required? like the mandatory. This seems to work well BUT XP clients are having issues, where there is no desktop/start menu/ no GPO settings are copied down. You can imagine I am pulling my hair out, I have gone through all the settings and cleared out the XP profiles just incase they are causing the problem. Does anyone have any ideas? we switched from mandatory to roaming because we had the opposite problem where XP clients worked fine but Windows 7 was randomly not working and students were required to log off and back on possibly up to 3-4 times before it worked. Any help would be great edit: When it goes very slow for XP clients that is when it struggles to properly login. Have done even more testing and one minute it works fine, next problems occur. The slow ones seem to sit there for about 5+ minutes where the ones that work are pretty instant.

Hi, I've posted something similar to this before but as yet still haven't found a solution that I understand so i'm going to try again. In school we have a server running 2003 but now recently we've upped all our machines to Windows 7. Since doing this whenever a user logs onto the system it logs them on with a temporary profile. The confusing thing for me is that it doesn't seem to do it on some of the other Win7 machines we have... The staff don't use profiles to log in and it even does it with those but again- only on certain computers. The students have a profile and i've noticed that a .v2 folder has been created for those so i also wanted to know how to transfer the profile settings from the XP profile to the Win 7 profile. Thanks in advance.

I am sorry to bring this back up as I know there have been a few threads about it before .... but we cannot find a solution. We are using mandatory profiles for our students, and they get copied to 'C:\Documents and Settings\' on log on. On log off the profile is supposed to be deleted. This has been working fine previously until not long ago. Because they are not being deleted multiple copies of the profile are being created, such as username.domain and username.000 etc. The files that are being left behind, therefore the profile not being totally deleted are: C:\Documents and Settings\*Username*\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\index.dat C:\Documents and Settings\*Username*\IETldCache\index.dat C:\Documents and Settings\*Username*\Cookies\index.dat We have GPO set to delete profiles on log off, we run the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service, we also have a script that runs ... and it just seems impossible for these profiles to be deleted properly. We run Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP. Any help is gratefully received. Many Thanks Tom

Howdy all... We've been battling (as many have) with long login times in our PC classrooms for years. We have finally managed to get things down to about 2-2.5 minutes, but have hit a roadblock trying to get things down any further. Glorious stories abound about sub-20-second logins. Our faculty have apparently heard this as well and are insistent that we attain this holy grail. Would folks be willing to share their average login time for public labs and perhaps some high-level information as to what was done to attain it? I need to present some benchmarks to management on what other schools experience so we can establish what "normal" is. We have a Win 2008/2003 R2 domain and Windows 7 clients. We map only a couple of DFS drives, have a total of three GPO's and map printers via a VB script in the startup folder. We establish the default profile pre-imaging the lab machines and ensure the user profile is wiped on logout. Only folder redirection is for mydocs. tia. -brian

I currently use Windows Remote Assistance (msra.exe /expert) to connect to, view and control users' computers if they have a software problem. This works great with users who have roaming profiles - but not for those who have mandatory profiles. When attempting to connect to a user who has a mandatory profile the following error is displayed on the user's screen: "There was a problem starting Remote Assistance Remote Assistance is unavailable for the current user account. If you are using a Windows Guest account try logging in with another account. If you are not using a Guest account, try restarting your machine." The Remote Assistance on the initiator's PC times out after a few minutes. The problem appears not to be our mandatory profile; I have created a new mandatory profile using the 'default' user profile and this still failed. When the ntuser.dat extension was changed to .man the error above was displayed and the connection would not be made. After rebooting the PC, changing the ntuser.man extension to .dat allowed the connection to be made OK. i.e. the problem appears not to lie within the content of the ntuser file or profile, but the way in which Windows interprets the .man extension - apparently placing a restriction on Remote Assistance connections. Does anyone have a solution / suggestions that may lead to a solution to this? We are using Windows 7 64bit Enterprise with all the latest updates. The roaming / mandatory profile is hosted on a share which the users have full control (share & NTFS) over. Thanks in advance, FW.

I'm having a profile problem... When the user 'public' logs onto the pc i keep getting an error that prevents them from logging on and there is always a filename that is too long that is causing this to happen. If i log on as administrator and delete the local profile everything is ok for a while. Then eventually it will happen again... What could it be? And what could i do to sort it out?

Hi, Wondering if anyones got any ideas about this, Ive been given a note from Special Needs asking if a new lad who has trouble seeing can have the following: Personal profile needs to be set-up on the system so he can just log on and have the correct settings: Font = Arial Size = 32 Background = Light Grey I was just wondering if anyone has done this through GPO or through his roaming profile? Thanks all!

Hi we currently use roaming profiles at our school. We have the desktop and my documents folders redirected with Ranger software. I have a problem with slow logins. I think this is down to application data that was 56mb, due to java in the user’s application data. If I use mandatory profiles the users will encounter problems when login into different machines with software on them. Please can anybody give me any advice? Regards

I upgraded us to vBulletin 3.7 Beta 4 last night. This allows users to add comments to images in gallerys now as well as upload a background for use on the now enabled, customise profile options. For a example of what backgrounds look like see my terrible example at my profile page. Also now in your profile you can set your country flag and also your region/state flag (if available). If your country/region is not listed please can you obatin a copy of the flag in the dimensions (32x20) and post it here (in gif form) and I will add it. Comments/bugs please post here also. Enjoy
