Right, found a weird one that can occour when people inpropperly kill a Vista machine with multiple users logged in and have posted here for refference. When it is killed impropperly it can leave a chunk of data in the registry, when this happens it attempts to use rewrite the original registry which it does not have access to do. The key involved is located here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ and will take the form of a network SID with .bak appended to the end. When this is present it will mess up the logon process and cause the user to always logon with a temporary profile. To solve this both the .bak key and the identical SID key if present. You should also check the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\SessionData under each number to make sure that the system has not held sessions for the offending user account, the best idea is to delete each of the numbered keys under here that refference the offending user which should after a reboot resolve the issue.

Hi, I've posted something similar to this before but as yet still haven't found a solution that I understand so i'm going to try again. In school we have a server running 2003 but now recently we've upped all our machines to Windows 7. Since doing this whenever a user logs onto the system it logs them on with a temporary profile. The confusing thing for me is that it doesn't seem to do it on some of the other Win7 machines we have... The staff don't use profiles to log in and it even does it with those but again- only on certain computers. The students have a profile and i've noticed that a .v2 folder has been created for those so i also wanted to know how to transfer the profile settings from the XP profile to the Win 7 profile. Thanks in advance.

We are getting some agency staff in to cover a couple of people who are off sick in the IT department. Never really had a need for this before, and previous managers never really looked into this. Whats the best way to go about giving them access to the system. I have no qualms about giving them their own logins so they can access applications and do day to day stuff, but we also access servers with the administrator account and domain password. Do i duplicate the admin account and give them that if they need access, do i avoid them doing any admin work all together, or do i draw up an agreement with regards to use of our network and passwords?

Users have been logging on to some Win 7 machines without a problem for ages but now, whenever ANY user logs on, it logs them on with a temporary profile... This is only happening on 5 machines in our PPA room. A new switch has been added in there (managed) recently. Could it be that? When I log on as a domain admin- it logs on without a problem... Nobody is using roaming profiles.
