Hello, We are looking at re-furbishing our ICT suite and replacing PC's in school etc... and wondered what the cost may be to implement some kind of virtual computing environment? Our network is getting a bit full and the cost of installing new network points and switches, new computers etc... would be quite high. What would it be weighed against developing a virtual computing environment? Am I correct in thinking that if we have a virtual server a workstation could log on and use any operating system? Also- would all users see the same desktop and be able to use the same programs? I have more questions for later... J x

Many years ago leasing seemed a popular solution. Are any schools still leasing - especially in the current financial climate?

I see lots of threads on this community asking for help/advice/prices for every aspect of the schools we work in. Be it hardware, licensing, internet lines etc. But..... What about us?? What kind of lovely geeky setups are you all running in your offices? Are we just left with slow machines that need upgrading too? Who has some good IT office setups? How many monitors? What OS's and purposes? Discuss...

Can someone please clarify to me what the different Fedora desktops are used for and/or why they are good. Thanks EDIT: title should be Fedora 20, different desktops.

Hi I would if someone could help with this... I have a server 2008 R2, 7 staff windows 7 laptops and 60+ windows 7 pc for pupils and staff to use. The server is setup for redirect of documents, start menu and desktops. The pupils has a separate desktop, start menu redirections to the staff. The school would like some changes done. The staff laptop to be setup so the desktop and start menu are synced so they can be taken off site so they are the same as when they are at school. I have got the documents syncing fine which was the easy bit. Now here is the problem. The school does not want the staff to write to the desktop and start menu. I have been trying out a few things with robocopy, which seems to be working. I can get the desktop and start menu to copy to local folder on the laptop and when the laptop is off site the desktop/start menu are usable as i want. However the staff can write on the desktop, which i dont want. When the laptops are brought back into school, the robocop script runs and sny newly created files/folders are lost. As this server was setup for redirecting (pupils and staff) and not for syncing. Is there an easy way i can get want the school requires with out doing major changes to polices. Thanks for all your help Andrew

HELP! We've migrated 2 DCs over to 2008R2, the first went over no problem after following a books recommendations, the second seemd to go over fine, until we realised that we couldn't see the shares from a remote PC. Basically the book said to DCpromo, change names and IPs of old and new servers, this worked on the first server and had no reason to doubt the book.

Hi All, While have already taken several cost saving measures there are a few other things which may need to be cut. Currently we supply every teacher a laptop, we also supply desktop computers for every classroom. I think that realistically this is unsustainable and unnecessary moving forward. What do you do in your school ??

Hi We are looking to get some new desktop PC's and was just wondering where everyone got their machines from (if you don't build them yourselves!)? Thanks in advance. Regards Andrew

Hi all Do any of your schools lease the desktops / laptops? if so who do you use?

I'm starting to put together a test rig for my migration to 2008 and 7. I'm going to have to do compatibility testing and GPO tweaks. I reckon that I should be able to shift everything straight to 7 from XP though which should make life a huge amount earlier. Anyway... the question I have is this... how do people 'do' redirection of app data, desktops, start menus, etc.? With my current XP clients I use a default user profile stored in the NETLOGON share. Staff and students then get slightly different Desktops and Start Menus (redirected via GPO). Nothing is done to App Data. I've heard stories though about wierdness with certain re-direction scenarios so, rather than re-invent the wheel, I thought I'd ask for some examples
