I have a RM Minibook 120 that gets stuck on the RM splash screen and will not go any further regardless of what buttons i press on the keyboard. I did a bit of googling and it suggested that the BIOS/CMOS battery may need replacing. However, I can't figure out where to get at it. I can remove the hard drive and ram easy enough but have no idea where the battery is located to be able to replace it

Hi Guys, I'm looking for suggestions for things I may have missed here: One of the schools I look after recently purchased 105 HP Mini 210-1001SA laptops (1 per child in Y3/4/5). I've created a W7Pro WDS image, and applied it to each one of the laptops, and they've all worked fine apart from 6 or 7 which have been causing me major headaches with their wireless connectivity - they'll either connect for half an hour or so then drop the connection,or they'll report that no wireless connections are available. Other laptops in the same location report the school WLAN and a couple in houses nearby, even when those 6 or 7 stop. So far, I've done: Swap Cards between duffers and Known Good Laptops - still N/G Reinstalled Drivers - still n/g Reinstalled Windows - still n/g Disabled all Power Management - still n/g Upgraded BIOS on laptops - still n/g Upgraded firmware on WAP - still n/g Tried different WAP - still n/g Networking works fine if I plug in a cable, and the affected laptops can use a USB wifi dongle OK. I'm thinking if I put *nix on a pendrive and see if they work that way it might prove it's the cards. Any suggestions gratefully received, particularly as to where I can buy the cards from as HP's response is "Oh, you've put your own OS on? Well, your warranty is void then..." and to put the phone down on you! Guess I won't be buying any more kit from them, so suggestions as to nice netbooks, desktops and servers as well please! Cheers, Rob

I've been contemplating getting myself a new laptop as I've been getting frustrated with the display quality, battery life and weight of my current 14" model. Initially I'd been planning on getting a lightweight ultraportable 11-12" model. Possibly something like a Dell M101Z or an Asus ePC 12" for around £500. I guess my main criteria was for something as light as possible , 4 hour+ battery life, NO CD drive and around an 11/12" screen with resolution of at least 1366x768 (I can't stand the 1024x600 you get on a lot of netbooks!). I know it's a bit of a jump up in price but I've noticed that you can get a MacBook Air 11" for around £800. I've never owned a Mac before but having had a play with one in the store for a bit last week it struck me as being exactly what I was looking for in an ultraportable laptop. Has anyone on here had a chance to play with one at work or own one? If so how are you finding it?

Good Morning all, I've had a primary school I work with ask about using tablets as their primary machine type. The head wants iPads, but is happy to go with Android. I personally don't see how that's going to benefit the kiddies (whole new learning curve from their home Windows machines, plus no keyboard/mouse). Does anyone know of a successful implementation of tablets and touch devices in primary schools (or any school, I guess) as opposed to having Netbooks, which I'm seeing a sharp rise in, Notebooks or the faithful PC (including thin client)? My own thoughts are: 1. Cost. Surely purchasing [x] tablets and maintaining [x] tablets over time will become more expensive than some budget netbooks? I've seen some 2Ghz 2GB Win 7 Pro Netbooks come in at a few hundred (because of separate £80~ Win 7 license). 2. Learning Curve for the smaller kiddies. 3. Do they connect to a domain? How do they store kids' work? 4. Learning to type -- forget about it. 5. 30 kids...clambering over a touch device. Asking for trouble (scratches, blemishes, drops, knocks). At least with a PC they're only going to be fighting over the keyboard/mouse which are less expensive than a curly wurly these days. 6. Lack of software -- Yes, you can get FREE and PAID apps, but can you get your standard Clicker 5, Logo, etc...? 7. Security -- can these devices use proxy settings? (I'm assuming yes). Are they susceptible to viruses, and other common problems? Can they be passworded with a user base (ie-, pupils, staff, admin, or each individual user -- AD integration with Server 200x)? All of which are cons. The only pro I can think of is that these kids will be using touch devices for the rest of their lives. Teach em young. That said, the teachers need to be able to use them as well and, without being too harsh, most of the teachers I see daily aren't that capable with a PC.

Hi Folks, every year we purchase devices for our Yr5's, they then pay a little every term and own the device after 2 years. This year it appears Net-books aren't as popular (judging by availability). So I was wondering what people are using. We use Google Apps but don't really want to use Chrome books. We have the office suite available via 2X/Citrix but I find this a pain to use on the iPad. There doesn't seem to be central management for Android devices. Essentailly lots of pros and cons for each device and no obvious winner. Is the MS tablet robust enough for 9/10 yr olds? What does everyone think? Thanks Darren

No idea if this is the correct forum for this but I'm hoping someone can help. I have over 100 Toshiba netbooks in school that are labouring under the weight of age, and some Chromebooks that everyone is fighting over!! I have the bright idea of installing Chromium OS on the netbooks and whilst limiting their function, making them faster and more responsive - also giving a more 'unified' experience to the children. We have a Google Apps domain and the money to purchase more chromebooks is just not there. I have used the builds and instructions from Arnold the Bat's website and have got Chromium to work from a USB stick on our NB250 and NB300 netbooks (the NB510s are still a work in progress) EXCEPT When the netbook boots, the wireless starts up and is enabled, up to the point where the Chromium login screen loads, when it immediately becomes disabled (It's Atheros, not Broadcom) with no way to turn it back on. However when you attach an Ethernet cable and a LAN connection is established, up comes the wireless and connects - and stays connected when the netbook is detached from the LAN. The wireless remains connected until the netbook is restarted. So not a driver issue, maybe? My problem is that I have no experience with Linux/Chromium/Chronos and not a clue how to attempt to alter the default behaviour and I am hoping some very kind person can point me in the right direction. I have experimented with different builds downloaded from the website, to no avail. Any ideas gratefully received, thank you.

I am a Tech at two elementary schools and have been put in charge of ordering replacements laptops for our Mobile carts (Carts filled with about 20 iBooks hooked to power and printer, etc.). We have decided to purchase Netbooks to replace the iBooks and I have narrowed it down to three that would work for us and have done so much research on them that it would be nice to have the opinion of others working in the field. Toshiba NB505 HP Mini 110 Asus Eee PC 1001Pxd I have about 100 I need to order between the two schools. I think I am leaning toward the Toshiba or HP, as I have read reviews about netbooting being kind of a big pain on the Asus. Not too fond of all the bad customer service reviews with Toshiba and HP either. All we need them for is basic computing, Internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and maybe 1 or 2 small educational apps. Does anyone have an advice, suggestions, etc. to help me decide? Also, all come with only 1GB memory, do I upgrade right off the bat, or do I wait a year or two?? Thanks for any help, I am a Tech, new to working in a school district....Corporate work experience....Totally different! Thanks again!

Our ICT department would like to purchase four netbooks. They've decided on the Toshiba NB300 (but I'm sure they could be persuaded otherwise). They need to order them by Friday 26th March. Thanks

Thought I would try again in here as my last thread in Hardware went unanswered. Has anybody used one? What is the battery performance like? How do they compare to other netbooks? What are your experiences with the warranty service?

Hello all, This is my first post on Edugeek. I'm just wondering if anyone has any solutions to make use of some old netbooks we have laying around.. We have considered converting these to some form of Chromebook using Neverware's CloudReady which we use on some other devices, however these netbooks only have 4GB HDDs that are soldered on (fantastic I know...). We would need something smaller than 4GB after install. Has anyone re-purposed something with 4GB HDDs to make use of today? Even if these are just for quick internet access and Google Docs this would be useful for now. Thanks, L

We have 32 Fizzbook Spin NL2 netbooks that we need to get rid of so I can re-use the trolley they are currently stored in. They're showing signs of age and some are missing the stylus although all do work - they're very basic and the Atom CPU is showing its age but they do all switch on. They've been upgraded to 2GB of RAM, have Windows 7 Pro (with product key inside the battery cover) Specifications can be found here:Specification Any sensible offers accepted.

I have a Stone netbook and the cursor is moving by itself, and when the touchpad is used the mouse moves erratically, there is no updated drivers to install for the touchpad What else can I do to Fix the problem??????

Ive had my EEE PC 1000h for about 6 months now - as it was with the default XP install it was fine, no problems. I then decided to upgrade it to Windows 7. After getting all the neccessary drivers it was also working OK. The problem came once I installed the Asus 'Super Hybrid Engine' for managing system performance. On 'Auto' mode its fine, and on 'Power Saving' mode its also quite happy. But when I select 'High Performance' or 'Super Performance' the system completely crashes and I get awesome fuzzy colourfull lines going down the screen (graphics error me thinks?). All I can do then is a battery pull. I have seen the 1000h model run Windows 7 with the 'Super Hybrid Engine' before with no problems. Could it possibly be the GPU on my netbook or a dodgy OS build? System Specs: Windows 7 Proffesional x86 2GB DDR2 RAM standard everything else. Any suggestions appreciated cheers. Chris

Hi Edugeekers. I'm interested to know if anyone out there is using the Lenovo x100e netbook/Notebook? and if so, what do you think of them? We are looking at putting in our first classroom set of laptops, and having evaluated a number of 10.1" models, the feedback from the kids is that they want a bigger screen. The x100e seems to fit the bill, but nobody seems to have an opinion. Any thoughts, or other recommendations? Thanks John

For those who have not heard of the Pixel Qi screen it is a new type of extremely low power use LCD screen that can be used without a backlight in direct sunlight or in an ultra low power and refresh rate ebook reader mode. It also supports standard use with a backlight just in case you need it. This means that it makes your netbook usable and easy to read from in full sunlight and saves you battery power making for longer runtimes. An aftermarket screen has been released here Pixel Qi display that will let you replace the existing screen in your compatible netbook with one of these. Currently it supports the Samsung N130 & Lenovo S10-2 plus any other that use the same type of LCD. It may not be worth it unless you need these features but if you are needing to replace one anyway it could be worth looking at one of these as an alternative.

I've been thinking about a netbook to carry around with me for web development for a while now and just as I'm about to buy one Samsung launch the NB30 education netbook which is "toughened" and hopefully means it'll survive more that six months of trips to school and back. Rubberised finish, spill resistant and freefall sensor. Not only does it sound perfect for my bag, it sounds great for those of our students- unconvinced about netbook use in trolleys as yet although I'm sure someone will tell me how well this is working for them. Regardless of the whole netbook/laptop debate I can't wait to see one at Bett on Saturday, although there's a distinct danger I'll buy one on the spot. This one apparently has a new keyboard design, Samsung are traditionally very good in this area, so it will be interesting to see how easy it is to type on (size decent travel etc) and if the traditional primary school problem of small fingers prying off keys is likely to be removed (do you think they'll mind if I break the one on the stand). Article here.

NorhTec - Products http://www.norhtec.com/products/gecko/geckoedubook2.jpg Looks like an interesting concept, they do offer a LiON battery pack option as well and the AA option uses recharcable AAs that recharge in place.
