Dear All Is there anyone who is presently using SIMS Options please? We are in the process of setting it up and are trying to understand how users are invited. Does it have to be the student that chooses their option or could it be the parent? If there is anyone who I could have a chat with that would be great. Many thanks in advance Jay

Hi, We plan to use SIMS Options Online. As far as I can tell, students need to have the student box ticked and Parents need to have the Parent box ticked in Product Admin before they can access it. Other than clicking 3500+ times, once in each box, how do you tick the parents box for all parents and the students box for all students (or better yet, all students in a year group and all parents of students in year group)? Thanks. David.

Hi all, We have an issue with Capita SIMS. Basically when we open SIMS there is a button in the top right corner named 'Documentation'. When we click it, an error appears in the bottom corner telling us that the Index file is missing. Has anyone seen this before? If so any advice would be very helpful. Thanks, Rob

Hi all, Capita are doing an online survey to help develop and improve the SupportNet website. It's really important if we want changes and modifications that all SIMS users go on and cast your votes. It's very limited and just allows you to allocate up to 100 points between 14/15 areas for improvement, nonetheless it's a great chance to get some feedback consolidated and hopefully listened to. SupportNet Click on the Support menu and then Surveys. Choose "SupportNet 2.0 Online Consultation" Allocate your points and submit. I particularly think areas 2,8,10,11,12, and 13, warrant some pushing... but, whatever you think, go and vote, these opportunities don't come about often. so go forth and vote as you have to log in, the link below may not work, in which case use the link above and after logging in follow the menu route. http://support.capitaes.co.uk/user/surveys.asp?status=list

Hey. I know this topic has been covered ad nauseum, but I'm building a web gateway that extracts information from SIMS's SQL Server database; but I don't want to go through SIMS to get it. That means no SIMS SDK or anything of that kind. I don't see the need for those extra levels of abstraction. I just want to connect directly to the database, run some queries, then do whatever I want with the information. I've already had some success, and the project is going pretty well. Our LEA has given us its full support. Now, we only want to pull data from the database - there will be no writing back to it. Capita are aware of our intentions, and their response was: "We don’t support the schema as that implies direct connection to the database. We would rather the school use IMS or the Command reporter." So, they would rather we do things their way - but why wouldn't they? From what my LEA has told me, much of the talk on here about Capita rescinding their SIMS support if we circumvent their software is just so much scaremongering. Anyway, regardless of the Capita issues, we've been given the go-ahead by the LEA to look into this. It's going to happen. So, I know a lot of folks have had some success in this area already (penfold_99, I believe, with Moodle integration; and the chaps at SalamanderSoft who did a lot of work for Twyneham, to name a couple); and I was wondering if anyone has managed to do any extensive mapping of the SIMS/SQL relationships, perhaps using the SQL Server Profiler or something similar to log the requests that SIMS is sending to the database. We're really looking for people to collaborate with on this; and we would be massively appreciative to anyone who has already made substantial headway into mapping the relationships who might be willing to help. I know you're out there Thanks in advance, -Gdn

[sims] SIM.ini problem - cannot be located or is incomplete
marsdenprimary posted a topic in MIS Systems
Hi, We are upgrading our admin system machines here at school and instead of forking out over £1000 for Oneconnect to come in and upgrade them from XP to Windows 7, I thought i'd do it myself. All gone well except installing SIMS and FMS! SIMS is on our server. Gone into our S: drive, sims setups, found the SIMSInst file but that doesn't work- it says the 'Infrastructure is missing' so i tried the SIMS Application setup. All went well but on launching it, it says: The SIMS.ini file cannot be located or is incomplete which means the system cannot be automatically updated. What is going wrong? Help very much appreciated! xx -
We're looking for someone to join our team in Milton Keynes to deliver specialist training and support for school managers and staff in the use of the SIMS administration software. They'll be a team player who understands schools business/system processes and can deal with customers and third party suppliers. They'll work alongside existing staff but have responsibility for specific areas in SIMS/FMSsuite. The ability to support other SIMS and non-SIMS software modules is required along with the ability to develop and deliver training courses. They’ll assist with the QA and testing of new releases as well as producing system/user documentation such as helpsheets. This is a full time role with a 37 hour, Monday to Friday working week. Surely there must be a better way to resolve this dispute? Education Software Solutions (ESS) has asked the High Court to intervene in a row that risks disruption at 1,100 state schools in Northern Ireland. Capita sold the SIMS software to ESS, set up by the private equity firm Montagu, for £400m in 2020 as part of chief executive Jon Lewis’s efforts to reduce a £1.1bn debt burden. The outsourcer continued to provide the software to schools in Northern Ireland under licence, but ESS claims that permission expired in March. Capita disputes this, telling the court it accepted “commercial terms” for an extension of the licence proposed by ESS during a phone call. ESS wants the High Court to declare that no valid extension was made and have threatened to apply for an injunction forcing the software to be deleted across Northern Ireland. Around 1,100 Northern Irish state schools could be forced to delete copies of the software provided by Capita, which ESS claims are effectively pirated. Further information on this dispute and the court claims/counterclaims can be found on the WhichMIS? website at whichmis.com

Hi, I wonder if anyone else who uses SIMS Agora can confirm they are able to generate invitation codes for parents today? We can't and haven't been able to since yesterday afternoon. I logged it with Capita yesterday but don't expect any response. If this problem affects all/multiple schools then I won't bother to chase it, if it only affects us then I will have too. To recreate, while logged in as an admin user, in the Users screen, select a student, find the parent you wish to invite, click on the 'Generate Invitation Code' button and see error 'Unable to perform requested action' next to the email button. This happens for us with new parents and parents who already have an invitation code. We can still generate and send invites to employees. Anyway, if you can confirm either way that you do or don't see this same issue, that would be very helpful. Thanks. David.

Hello fellow edugeekers/SIMS frustratees, One of our receptionists has been noticing a significant lag in a few of the modules within SIMs, specifically when she is doing any work on attendance and with some reports. There are no errors thrown up, other parts of SIMS and the computer work fine. This is a recent issue and not a long-standing one with her account/her SIMS installation. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone, Right, today, we are supposed to be rolling out the new SIMS 2013 Autumn update but it isn't showing up in SOLUS 3, even though Capita said they would make it available to us. Is this a problem on our end?

Hi, Forgive me if under wrong head....happy to be corrected. Our LEA migrated to OpenHive just before Easter and in May my ability to use the inbuilt FTP publish in NetObjects Fusion (2012) and Serif WebPlus (x6) stopped working. At time of writing we are at week 10 of investigation into this issue. Does anyone in other LEAs using OpenHive have the same issues? Or if not can you publish via internal FTP from web authoring programs without FTP advanced config. And if in West Sussex - and you can publish from web authoring programs without FTP advanced config - how did you get around the issue? Cheers Dave

Hi, Since August 2013 we have been 1 school (1 school number) with 2 sites (4 miles apart) but because the results of one of the sites was adversely affecting the other, the schools are splitting and we've been given a DFE number for the newer site. We are now wondering what to do about SIMs:- 1) Can we run two school from one SIMs? 2) If not, how do we create another instance of SIMs? 3) How do we transfer existing BGA pupils to the new SIMs? At the newer school we have a DELL/VMWare virtual environment with our current SIMs server virtualized and more than enough resources for a second MS SQL server. A 100Mb/s P2P will remain between the 2 schools. Has anyone been through this kind of restructuring? Many thanks

Hi All, I was just wondering if anyone has any experience working with Capita as a technical partner? We are looking at developing some of our internal systems to write information back to the SIMS database, in particular the Behaviour Management section. The school is looking to become a technical partner as we support a number of other schools within our school partnership trust. Thanks

Groupcall Emerge iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch app for MIS access.
vikpaw posted a topic in MIS Systems
I started writing this as a comment to the article linked below, but it got very painful really quickly, especially with no preview, so here it is in it's own thread: OK So initial feedback from showing the BETT video (EduGeek.net - BETT 2010 - Capita and Stone Computers Demo) of the SIMS app to staff and management has been very positive and i've been doing some digging, asking some questions of my account manager (who checked some things with Groupcall) and i thought i'd share the responses for anyone that is interested. Answers have been reworded slightly. I'd like a demo on my phone to test. I was hoping for this at BETT, but it was not offered. Is it possible to try it out? -> Demo link to follow Contact your account manager for info. If i install to my personal handset then decide to leave, can it be remote disabled? -> Each device has a unique installation and can be remotely locked/disabled. Follow up: I'd like for it to auto disable if not synched for x-days. It appears from the settings the different DBs have expiration times but i think that just controls when it next synchs. At secondary pricing I'd need 28 units minimum before it's worth getting a site licence, but i only want to try it out with 1/2/5 initially, how will that work if i later add many more? [secondary: £299 1st device, £99 after that. £2995 site. Primary: £195 1st device, £99 after that. £1995 site.] -> Once a number of individual school licences reach the equivalent of the site licence, the school’s licence will automatically be upgraded to a site licence. [therefore cost is capped.] Follow up: What affect if any is there for a dual Primary/Secondary site, where most of my students are Primary (2/3). Usually new modules require installation / training, at additional cost. What is the hit? -> Training is optional since Emerge is so intuitive. Remote training can be provided if desired. On-line training materials are available and will be sent to existing customers on receipt of payment. Groupcall is in the process of creating a range of training videos I'd like the nurses to have access too. When will medical / behaviour be available? -> A number of profiles are currently available, however we can add / create bespoke profiles as requested. The additional of medical information is available now. Groupcall intends to add the facility to write back behaviour information in the next release (due April 11) Assessment information is currently under review, and we’re hopeful that it’ll be added before the new academic year (Sept 11), however this is yet to be specified or confirmed. Can one device be used with multiple logins, i.e. I can have a shared iPad for Heads of Year to use? -> Yes it is possible to set this up using the Emerge management console which will be installed for the school to manage. Any idea on timeframe for other devices i.e. Android, Nokia, etc. -> Not defined yet - but hopefully an Android app will be available in the next few months, followed by WM& and then Java. ============================ Further queries and thoughts posed: iPod Touch 4 is currently around £150 here for an 8GB. I think 3rd gen is cheaper still. Will it work on that? Is the pricing annual? Or is there an on going cost? The demo, appeared to have a limit of around 50 students on a search, but i may be wrong. When searching it finds the character / combo in any part of the name, so 'al' returns 'sally' and 'wallis'. That could be a limitation for me! Can it access UDGs so when used for a school trip all info is in one list? Any recommendations on management software to lock down usage of the devices? On this i'm thinking one of the synch charge cases / racks seen at BETT2011 would do the job. They could all be restored from backup to prevent rubbish being downloaded. Any useful apps though could be added for all. I'll be looking at other threads regarding this, as i'm sure it'll be an issue when kids get given iPads; dont want them playing Angry Birds! Hi peeps, Need to know what version of FMS you are running, and which version of SIMS you have alongside it. I think we've been a version out for a while and after last nights upgrade from August 09 to Autumn Update (Autumn Main is wrapped in i guess) i think we're further out of date now. My FMS shows 6.120 but i think August 09 should have had 6.124 with it, and Autumn Main brings it to 6.128. Checked SupportNet but couldn't easily find an answer except that 6.124 may have been pulled due to some error? I've logged a case and probably just need it to be pushed to me by SOLUS, but as always a Heads Up from EG brings peace of mind. I don't see why it wasn't just available by SOLUS as previous ones were. It could be because i seem to have skipped over Autumn Main that this is happening. Right, going to go look for the SOLUS 3 manual so maybe i can push some updates out in a hurry while i wait for UK to wake up

Hi. Has anyone else used Capita myaccountsupport@ email address and managed to get their issue resolved? I emailed in June 2019 to request a MAT wide account and a month later had a response asking for further details which I responded to, but since, nothing. I have sent follow up emails, which never get responded to and contacted our Capita account manager who hasn't replied either. At the moment I've no ability to renew annual entitlement for any of our schools as none of the existing accounts work anymore. Anyone had success? Meldrew.

Hello all, In the Christmas Holidays, we had a new SIMS Server installed by a c®apita engineer. Since coming back, we have found that No One can edit the S Drive. Not even the Domain Administrator (unless your logged directly onto the server). We have tried giving certain people & other domain admins "Full Control" over the network share but this still doesn't resolve the issue. We have logged the job with Capita however, they are very very slow and have already been waiting since the 2nd January. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on this one? Thanks in Advanced, Charlie Manor School Sports College

I am having some trouble with SOLUS 3 throwing the following error: "Object already exists". The first time I encountered this was when I was trying to deploy the latest SIMS update (above image), but after investigating, the error message comes up in a number of other places in within SOLUS (below image). Such as just clicking on 'Configure Workstations' or trying to edit the database targets. Unfortunately, this is a school I have only recently started supporting and I haven't come across this error anywhere else! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Has anyone else experienced issues with logging into the SIMS Teacher App management console? We have been trying to access it since having our licence reactivated in April but receive the vague error message of: 'An error has occurred and it has been logged. If the problem persists please contact your Capita SIMS support team'. Our support company has been trying tirelessly to troubleshoot this issue and the problem has been escalated to the Capita 'problems' team. Our support company have looked at firewall ports on the broadband server, watched the traffic as we tried to access the site, deleted the app and reinstalled, made sure there are no gaps in the activation code. From the installation instructions we have whitelisted all of the addresses listed. There have also been reams of Azure addresses added to our broadband filter. We have also compared settings against another school up the road from us where Teacher App is working fine. I emailed Capita Monday and called yesterday to ask them for a new licence/activation code but the person I spoke to was extremely unhelpful and would only refer me back to our support company - even when I asked about issuing another activation code as they were the ones to issue the original direct. I completely understand that I need to speak to our support company for general support issues, but when the matter has escalated to Capita's problem team and it's a licence request, I would expect Capita to be more customer friendly and helpful. The person I spoke to was utterly robotic in his response to me saying only 'you need to speak to your support company. Capita do not support your school'. My basis for requesting a new licence was the last comment on this Edugeek thread where it worked for them. EduGeek.net - Forumsmis-systems/151513-sims-teacher-app.html I feel like we're in a similar position as our licence, issued in October 2015, had expired and we renewed late. Adding to that we moved SIMS over to a new server over Easter so it was an updated system, including the SQL version. Trying a new activation code is at least worth a try to see if it resolves the problem. I had to finally tell SLT that Teacher App isn't working as we're due to buy iPads for a group of teachers to try and use them for the new tracking targets for pupils. SLT are understandably not pleased with Capita as they are aware of all the troubleshooting I and our support company have done on this. They are talking refund now. Apparently there are other schools in a similar position in our County and I wondered whether anyone else was having the same problem.

Hi, I was raising a new incident with Capita support net this morning. Half way through I got an application error with the website, so I swore and clicked 'Issues for site' to see if it had recorded anything of the issue I was raising when I was shown a list of incidents I didn't recognise. Looking closer they were issues for another school, one in East Sussex I've never heard of. Clicking on the incidents themselves just gave me a message saying that I wasn't allowed to view this incident (fortunately), but not good. Now to report the issue to capita somehow. Meldrew
