I'm Rob, I was advised to come here by my 'boss' to build my knowledge of IT as well as the community attached to it. I recently enrolled on an IT Technician Apprenticeship at a local school. However, it is going to be late September before I can actually take the courses recommended for my job. As such I am trying to build my knowledge through my own means (books, youtube, Windows etc.)

If you have any advice or tips I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks :)

  1. Silly me, turns out that it wasnt working after the fixes I tried because I did not have the correct drive mapped.
  2. That also seems to be the case on our system. Did you manage to get it working? I have made a copy of the Index file so that it is in sims\documentation on our sims server, but it des not seem to have made a difference.
  3. Hi all, We have an issue with Capita SIMS. Basically when we open SIMS there is a button in the top right corner named 'Documentation'. When we click it, an error appears in the bottom corner telling us that the Index file is missing. Has anyone seen this before? If so any advice would be very helpful. Thanks, Rob
  4. Spot on Thanks very much Steve. Might wait until Half term to play with this just in case. Cheers
  5. I was fairly sure that was the problem but it's always nice to get an outside point of view (which is no doubt much more experienced than my own). Would I solve this by doing the following in Exchange Management Shell - Get-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory -server server.school.local | Set-AutodiscoverVirtualDirectory -ExternalUrl ‘https://post.school.location.sch.uk/Autodiscover/Autodiscover.xml’ -InternalUrl ‘https://post.school.location.sch.uk/Autodiscover/Autodiscover.xml’ I am not sure if the 'server.school.local' should just be 'server' instead. Thanks again for your help
  6. Thanks for the heads up Didn't realise it had kept the original. Our SSL has the friendly name of Post SSL and supports https://post.school.location.sch.uk/owa Or did you mean that actual name of the domain? Thanks again
  7. Hi all, We have been having this issue for as long as I can remember. Whenever we start up Outlook, we get the following security message. I have been reading up on the issue but since this is well outside my usual job, I'd like a bit more insight before I take action. As you can see from the image, Outlook is looking for server.school.local (I have edited this name obviously). We have just bought an SSL certificate for our OWA. So the 2 names compared are as follows - Internal Outlook - server.school.local Web App - https://post.school.location.sch.uk/owa From what I have read, the way around this problem could be to set up a SAN on our SSL (which I have no idea how to do). Or, to use the Exchange Management Shell to change the Autodiscover settings. As I said before, this is outside my comfort zone so I'd like to get this right first time round if possible. If anyone can offer any help or specific details of how to proceed they would be very much appreciated. Also, we are using Exchange Server 2010 and IIS 7. Many thanks Rob
  8. Sorry for the really delayed reply. We needed one SSL for our external email access as it is an https site but we now have that all sorted and working fine.
  9. Hi all, So first off, I don't usually deal with licensing so this is a little outside my comfort zone. We are looking into buying an SSL certificate but I personally am not sure how the whole process works and so I do not know if we can get away with just buying 1. So onto the question. If we were to purchase 1 SSL for our domain, would this cover out website, VLE, email and also our OWA? As I said this isn't usually my thing so please try to use small words Many thank!
  10. Ok, this question might be oddly placed, but here goes anyway. Is it possible to fill in a cell, depending on the value? For example if I type A, can it automatically change to Advanced? And B to Basic and E to Early and so on. Thanks, Rob
  11. Hi all,Our issue is a very annoying one. We are setup with youtube for schools and it was working perfectly until recently. For some reason, students can now see the full version of youtube, instead of the educational version. We use Smoothwall as our firewall and they have been dialled in for hours trying to solve it. The did manage to hide all the comments so we know that the connection between the two is working fine. I am not sure if it is a problem with youtube for schools as a whole or just our account, but it would be a massive help if anyone could give us some guidance. For any more information please ask. Thanks, Rob
  12. Now here's a fun ol' question. Basically we now have Office 365 and want a students home area to also be their Onedrive. We have managed to set this up for multiple users on a single machine, and it remembers their settings on that machine. However with around 1600 users, we cannot do this every time someone logs onto a different machine for the first time. So we need to try and automate the following process at logon (this is where the fun begins)! Create the folder C:\Users\%username%\Onedrive\Onedrive Log into Onedrive depending on the user who is using the machine Tell Onedrive to use C:\Users\%username%\Onedrive\Onedrive as it's own drive Finish Onedrive setup Exit Onedrive so that it is not running Delete the final Onedrive folder in the path above Run a set Cmd mklink command as admin, which points the now deleted folder to the users network drive (we already have the cmd command written) Reopen Onedrive Accept the changes made (basically click OK) So yes, lots and lots to automate and I know this is very very ambitious. If anyne out there fancies taking on this mammoth task and try to offer some help, please let me know Thanks!
  13. Hi all, We just signed up for Office 365 and noticed that Microsoft has increased the storage allowance to 1TB...which is insane...but anyway my main question to you is - Do you use Office 365 as your main storage system? If so, what are the pros and cons of both the management and security? Thanks
  14. Managed to get everything up and running, now the problem is that I have to setup a proxy url for onedrive to allow our FrogLearn VLE to work alongside it. Any ideas how I would go about this?
  15. Thanks for posting this, made me realise that actually we have no license for online services, only the software downloads. Going to work on getting O365 Education A2 up and running
