Hi all We are trying to use the InVentry Anywhere app and are getting mixed results. It doesn't seem to like connecting via our WiFi at all but through 4G we can log in, the app will correctly sync with the InVentry anywhere server, and will pull down who is currently signed in, your correct sign-in status etc. but when we try and sign-in/out via the app it says it has done so but seemingly fails to push that info back to the main console. We have opened the ports they requested on our firewall and have whitelisted the domains they asked for but the issue remians Has anyone else successfully got this to work and what did you need to do if so please? Cheers

Hi all Does anyone have a list of the IP addresses used by the app Shush and any other Whisper type app? Our smoothwall bundles them all in to a category along with genuine social sites/apps which we don't want to block, so I've got to resort to IP blocking. Looking at it, the app doesn't seem to do anything much other than communicate with the Apple servers. Olly

There is currently a known issue with the Apple Volume Purchase Programme (VPP). There are no technical articles from Apple on the subject (???), hence the reason I felt the need to post... When attempting to purchase certain apps, with a quantity more than 20, you will receive the following error message: Purchase of this item is not currently available. This item is being modified. Please try again later.@@debugPriceInfo@@ I have spoken with someone from Apple Education, and they have confirmed that this is a known fault, and that it has been affecting the purchasing of certain apps since the VPP was launched outside of the United States. The only current (laughable) workaround, that Apple have suggested, is to purchase 19 or less of the affected apps (at the full price). They won't offer a refund for any amount over and above what you should have paid whilst waiting for them to resolve the issue. They have also provided me with a link to report the issue to Apple: https://ssl.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/vpp-edu/ I recommend that anyone experiencing the same issue report it to Apple. They are currently unable to provide any information as to when the issue will be resolved. Some of the apps affected are as follows: Garageband iPhoto iMovie Sketchbook Pro for iPad Linguascope French Vocabulary Trainer Linguascope Spanish Vocabulary Trainer MathBoard ...although I'm sure there are many more! Yet another example of Apple launching a system (Maps) before it was working properly. From my conversations with Apple UK, they appear to be equally frustrated with the situation!! Last bit of information - don't expect email receipts for any purchases made through the VPP any time soon. We received some the next day, but some 3-4 weeks after the purchase. Yet another known issue so I've been told.

We are trying to get the reading eggs app (https://readingeggs.co.uk/apps/) to work on iPads - through our Smoothwall S4 device. We have been on to Smoothwall support and they've been great, but all we have found is that in order to get it to work we need to do one of the following: - Disable Google Safe Search - Disable HTTPS Inspection Neither of which are an option really! We have the list of URL's and IP's that reading eggs need unblocking (which is pretty extensive btw - i'll put it at the end of this post!) - butting these in the exclusions doesn't seem to resolve it, so i'm looking to the wonderful people on here! There are a lot of Smoothwall appliances out there, and they even sponsor this group! SURELY there is one user out there with reading eggs on a Smoothwall site.... please ... ANYONE! Our internet is provided through link2ict/ bgfl in our birmingham school. Since purchasing iPad's last year we have had so many problems with download apps and updating ios on them. We was given an alternative proxy by link2ict which worked for a little while, but now appears to be dead. I've logged a call but had no reply. Has anyone else had this problem? Or found a solution?

Groupcall Emerge iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch app for MIS access.
vikpaw posted a topic in MIS Systems
I started writing this as a comment to the article linked below, but it got very painful really quickly, especially with no preview, so here it is in it's own thread: OK So initial feedback from showing the BETT video (EduGeek.net - BETT 2010 - Capita and Stone Computers Demo) of the SIMS app to staff and management has been very positive and i've been doing some digging, asking some questions of my account manager (who checked some things with Groupcall) and i thought i'd share the responses for anyone that is interested. Answers have been reworded slightly. I'd like a demo on my phone to test. I was hoping for this at BETT, but it was not offered. Is it possible to try it out? -> Demo link to follow Contact your account manager for info. If i install to my personal handset then decide to leave, can it be remote disabled? -> Each device has a unique installation and can be remotely locked/disabled. Follow up: I'd like for it to auto disable if not synched for x-days. It appears from the settings the different DBs have expiration times but i think that just controls when it next synchs. At secondary pricing I'd need 28 units minimum before it's worth getting a site licence, but i only want to try it out with 1/2/5 initially, how will that work if i later add many more? [secondary: £299 1st device, £99 after that. £2995 site. Primary: £195 1st device, £99 after that. £1995 site.] -> Once a number of individual school licences reach the equivalent of the site licence, the school’s licence will automatically be upgraded to a site licence. [therefore cost is capped.] Follow up: What affect if any is there for a dual Primary/Secondary site, where most of my students are Primary (2/3). Usually new modules require installation / training, at additional cost. What is the hit? -> Training is optional since Emerge is so intuitive. Remote training can be provided if desired. On-line training materials are available and will be sent to existing customers on receipt of payment. Groupcall is in the process of creating a range of training videos I'd like the nurses to have access too. When will medical / behaviour be available? -> A number of profiles are currently available, however we can add / create bespoke profiles as requested. The additional of medical information is available now. Groupcall intends to add the facility to write back behaviour information in the next release (due April 11) Assessment information is currently under review, and we’re hopeful that it’ll be added before the new academic year (Sept 11), however this is yet to be specified or confirmed. Can one device be used with multiple logins, i.e. I can have a shared iPad for Heads of Year to use? -> Yes it is possible to set this up using the Emerge management console which will be installed for the school to manage. Any idea on timeframe for other devices i.e. Android, Nokia, etc. -> Not defined yet - but hopefully an Android app will be available in the next few months, followed by WM& and then Java. ============================ Further queries and thoughts posed: iPod Touch 4 is currently around £150 here for an 8GB. I think 3rd gen is cheaper still. Will it work on that? Is the pricing annual? Or is there an on going cost? The demo, appeared to have a limit of around 50 students on a search, but i may be wrong. When searching it finds the character / combo in any part of the name, so 'al' returns 'sally' and 'wallis'. That could be a limitation for me! Can it access UDGs so when used for a school trip all info is in one list? Any recommendations on management software to lock down usage of the devices? On this i'm thinking one of the synch charge cases / racks seen at BETT2011 would do the job. They could all be restored from backup to prevent rubbish being downloaded. Any useful apps though could be added for all. I'll be looking at other threads regarding this, as i'm sure it'll be an issue when kids get given iPads; dont want them playing Angry Birds! [sims] Exporting Students to CSV - Header Names / Sample Data?
danmace posted a topic in MIS Systems
Hi All, I'm building a web and mobile app for my school that will require an import of SIMS data in a CSV file - that's the easy part!!! Trouble is, I don't have access to SIMS or a test / sample file - basically containing the header names like "DOB" or "Forename" etc. I was just wondering if anyone had a sample file or if anyone could give me a blank file? (just headers included) Thanks, Dan -
We’re demonstrating our SIMS integrated parent app capability this term – including new customisable links features, dinner/menu bookings. Edugeeks are invited to join us for the two hour session (9-11am), so let us know and we’ll book you on. They’re free sessions: 18 May London / 23 May Birmingham / 24 May Manchester / 25 May Bristol. We’ll cover how to cut text costs by moving to app messaging; how to reduce payment transaction charges; instant publication of reports and timetables from SIMS; achievement and behaviour reporting; cashless caterer and SIMS SM integration; feedback from parents and how to maximise parent take up. If you can’t make the sessions give us a shout and we can set you up as a parent so you can download the app and have a play.

Is it just me, or is there no communication between central government and the MIS companies? We need to implement 2 big initiatives in the next 12 months and the only way I can see of doing it is to pay for a custom web app that does the job properly, with the UI and reporting we need and which somehow (and we've all read plenty about the problems involved in this) talks to the MIS... Example #1: Has anyone found a sensible way of recording assessments under the new APP scheme? I talked to a Serco rep about it several months ago and he wasn't aware of its existence. "ALFIE", their KS3 assessment tool, seems to be an application for making tests, which kind of misses the point completely. We will be reduced to paper I think. Example #2: Online Reporting (in place for September 2010 please) requires parents to have access to progress/attainment, attendance and behaviour information. In Eportal we have Lesson by Lesson, we have Behaviour Events, but the best we can do with assessment is a grade or level. We would like therefore to record more detail about individual assessments (i.e. some free text) and do away with annual reports. Unfortunately, as far as I can see both Serco and Capita still see reports to parents as a piece of prose written termly or once a year. The last Serco rep I spoke to recommended Markbook, but I can't see how that lets us enter text (e.g. a next step). Thinking even further ahead, shouldn't teachers be able to specify an activity online or on the VLE as a next step? That would just need a field which allowed hyperlinks... I suppose the frustrating thing is that we shouldn't be suggesting developments - we should be wowed by what the companies themselves come up with! Isn't that meant to be the point of a competitive industry? Clever solutions to problems? I can't believe high level meetings don't take place between the companies and civil servants/ministers to let them know what schools are going to need to implement. Any schools with the answers (or indeed reps from the MIS firms telling me I've got it wrong) please reply...

We've got a handful of Android phones in our work place which I look after and I'm trying to keep track of there whereabouts more efficiently with the use of Lightspeed MDM and Android Find My Device. Both are installed but I would like it so users can't uninstall them but can still use the rest of the functionality of the phone. I did try some apps and one called AppLock can prevent uninstalling but it also stops users from installing apps as well which isn't ideal. Has anyone else got a similar set up or a more ideal solution? I'm open to suggestions.

Hi, I have a Fortinet Firewall/Filter and want to block the app "Yellow". I've tried emailing their support several times and get no response. I wondered if others have managed to block this app before? And if so, could anyone tell me the URLs that it uses so that I can add it to our blacklist? Although the category "Social Networking" is blocked, and the app is set to be blocked on the "application control" policy on Fortinet, it still seems to be working. I know that the app uses Snapchat aspects (which is unblocked currently), but we'd like for "Yellow" to be blocked separately if at all possible. Thanks in advance, Ash

Interesting one here. We're looking to build our own web application via HTML and PHP for a support help desk. Does anyone know whether it'd be at all possible, to when a user logs in to Office 365, use those credentials to log them into our web application? So this way we can track which user it is, without them logging in twice. Any help at all would be appreciated. I've created PHP/MySQL web login systems before but nothing like this where we'd be connecting through another system. Cheers. Nick

I am currently trying to install Cisco Meraki System Manager on a set of 6 iPad 1s (iOS 5.1.1). I have tried on all of them to access the app store, but things are not showing up properly when I enter the Apple store. I have attached a screen shot of what I am seeing. It is not just the 1 iPad it is affecting. I have tried all 6 iPad 1s and still have the same issue. I know it is nothing to do with the wireless connection as I can access the app store on iPad 3s. Has anyone else had this issue, or do you know if Apple have cut access to the app store on older iPads? Many thanks

Hi, As a bit of background, I am writing an app at the moment for students, staff and parents to use as a communication tool with school. Its based around homework really, but with other facilities built in too. One of these other facilities is the ability for students and parents to see the students timetable. The way I've tried to do this is to create a report in SIMS giving students, their classes, when these classes are timetabled and which which teacher. I then use SIMS CommandReporter to extract this data and import into a database that I can then query to reproduce a timetable for a student. This looked like it was working fine, but during trials with students, a few students reported that their timetable was incorrect in the app. Upon investigation the results showed that the SIMS report included some students apparently being taught 2 lessons at the same time. Speaking to the timetable person here, (my knowledge of how to use SIMS is very patchy I should admit) this is correct and in SIMS itself, they have to tick a box to say which of the multiple classes the student actually attends (I think in this particular case, the student was in an intervention class, so rather than attending mainstream English, they attend the intervention class). I think this tickbox was called 'assigning' the class to the student. I went back to the report fields available and unfortunately there isn't an 'assigned' field that I could pick up and use to exclude classes that they don't actually attend. Its a bit of a long shot, but I wondered if anyone knew where to pick up this attribute and/or another way to automatically export student timetables from SIMS such that this could them be imported into a database. Many thanks, Meldrew.

Good morning, This is a bit of a puzzle for you. A member of staff used to use an app on their iPad for recording things such as handwriting to demonstrate to class. They no longer have it but cannot remember the name of it. All I have is a video of them using it and I have posted a screen print of the tool bar below.. It would be great if you can tell me what it is. Thank you in advance.
