If I use LANSpeedtest against a network share I'm only getting 700mbps write and 350mbsp read. Thats 85 MB/s ish on the write. All switches are gigabit Cisco's going down shortish lengths (<50m) of CAT5e. All server NICs are at least duals mostly quads. Cient NICs are all gigabit. Why is it so slow ?

Looks like the new faster EduGeek could not have been better timed, Google has just started using page load times as one of the metrics for its PageRank system. Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Using site speed in web search ranking For the moment speed is not too heavily weighted and affects only about 1% of the sites that are crawled but it is Google's aim to speed up the web so this may change depending on their results.

I do like a number of the improvements and fixes that have been included into the RC but have to say that the speed has definitely gone down hill from the beta. The test box that I have running it is slower running the W7 RC than it is with Vista. It may just be specific to the system and to do with drivers or something but it is not encouraging. I even get mouse stalls where the mouse stops moving for short periods of time when the system is doing something challanging - like changing to a resize cursor at the edge of a window . I had none of these issues with the original beta so I hope that this kind of nonscence is ironed out before release or at least only affects a very few machines. The system if kind of old but should cope, its lowst rateing is a 3 so I kind of expect more from it. I do like the maths entry program though, that looks very useful for entering formulas and the like.

Hi All, Now that the evenings are starting to get lighter, me and a few friends had the first "after work" flight of the year. I have never been to these ruins of old Cornish mine buildings so decided to explore via FPV. I used some smaller and lighter Lipo batteries for more performance on some of the flights at the cost of less air time but increased fun factor. Best viewed full screen @1080p

Hi All, Since its been nothing but bad weather lately and when it is sunny I seem to be working I thought I would put together some of the antics I've been up to FPV in the wind. Some flights were done with Tls Tony as my spotter which he did an excellent job after he got used to my style of flying The wind that day was very strong as well. I had to add my little wobble at the end, I had been fighting the wind in the Leat and hit with a gust of wind as I left under the tree (quadcopter) and that started my (myself) wobble off trying to keep my balance and it carried on until I landed lol great fun. Hi All, I got a chance to revisit Wortha Farm and fun some via FPV. It was a beautiful day but I was haunted by the ever present wind. I got plenty of turbulence coming off the banks of the stream while I was low down which just made it even more fun. There was no damage caused by the crash as you can see in the photo at the end. Good Morning everyone, We've had generally slow internet access for ages, which we're sure (following various tests) is a result of something inside school. We do have what I believe to be a strange network/DNS setup (but it may be perfectly normal) so allow me to explain: Our three DCs are normal DNS servers, each replicates etc etc. These are SCS1, SCS2 and SCS3 for the purposes of this thread. They resolve internal DNS fine. However nothing on our LAN has access to the county WAN/ISP feed other than our Censornet proxy server and mail server - these have two NICS, one on each. Thus no DNS request for an external domain will resolve from a workstation. Censornet (linux based) has to have an internal DNS as its first DNS otherwise it fails to identify our workstations via reverse lookup. It does have second and third DNS pointing to County, but being Linux it always tries them in order whereas windows has specific DNS servers per NIC. Thus when the internal domain lookups timed out, Censornet then tried looking to county and immediately got a result and displayed the page. Over christmas, I came up with a plan which seemed logical. I had our server support team install secondary DNS on the mail server (which has LAN and WAN nics). SCS1,2,3 now have a forwarder set so any external domain requests are forwarded immediately to Mail1. Censornet points directly at Mail1, so it can lookup external domains, but also can resolve internal stationnames. Now, first set of questions: a1): Does this seem ok as a DNS setup? a2): Should Mail1 receive updates periodically from SCS1,2,3? There are a couple of stations which don't have PTR records on Mail1 but do on SCS1,2,3 until I tell Mail1 to reload/transfer the zone from master. a3): Which should I be doing - Reload or Transfer - in this situation? a4): Is there something I should check to see why this isn't happening? SCS1,2,3 are set to notify all the NameServers listed, which I understood to mean Mail1 should therefore request an update when it is notified? Secondly, when I set this up at Christmas our internet speeds soured through the roof (as Censornet no longer had to wait for internal DNS to timeout). However they have dwindled to a snails pace over the last two months. Until yesterday evening - I was reloading the zone from master and managed to crash DNS on Mail1, so I restarted the DNS service. I came in this morning and internet access is back to full steam ahead. My thoughts go back to our old ISA server which we had to periodically restart to maintain internet speeds. b1): Why does it appear that I need to restart the DNS service on mail1 periodically to maintain internet access speed? b2): Is there something I can change to stop this happening? I'm happy to schedule it every weekend or suchlike if neccessary but it strikes me as odd. Sorry for the long post - I hope someone can cast some ideas in my direction. TIA, Peter

Hi, I have been having this really annoying issue where the internet seems to drop to an unusable speed say 0.4Mbps. When I do ping tests these either drop out or take an unusually long time. I can still ping the router no problem. Each time this happens i have been going to the router and performing a Cross over test and the speeds are coming back just as they should with no drop in speed and all ping tests are coming back. the router has been replaced two times and upgraded to a Cisco 2800 series; however this issue keeps occurring. I have been onto the main switch and even reset this to its default settings. I also reset the router and this does not improve the speed. any help will be much appreciated as the slow internet is driving me mad! Not to mention all the teachers! Thanks James

Hey All, So, we are with RM, we have 100Mbps leased line. At this school, mot mornings there is a real lack of speed. It looks intitally like a DNS issue but isn't. - Speaking with RM, they are saying that the bandwidth utilisation is 100%. They also say that the service utilising this bandwidth is "Google Update". The odd thing is that it happens early morning and settles at lunch time. - We cannot see anything on this network that even remotely looks like this anywhere on the network. Any advice would be brilliant, this school is really suffering! PS - We have just had all except the core switches changed from Cisco to Ubiquiti. Could be something or nothing.

Hi folks, We're upgrading our server and just wanted to know if you thought this price and spec was ok? Never really bought a server before. The only issue we have is this is coming from our local authority so we're a little tied into it...let me know what you think. x SERVER SPECS: HP ProLiant ML330 G6 E5606 2.13GHz/4-Core/8MB/80W Processor, 4GB RAM, DVD, Dual NIC, 4 x Hot Plug HDD's, 460W PS Server 300GB 15k SAS Hard Drive x 3 P410 RAID 5 Controller x 1 Server Config & Diagnostics 10+ items x 1 Support: HP ML330 5yr x 1 Backup Exec Windows Server x 1 SAS HBA for tape backup x 1 SAS Cable x 1 Ultrium 2/3/4 Cleaning Cartridge x 1 Internal Ultrium 4 SAS Tape Drive x 1 Ultrium 4 Data Cartridge x 8 TOTAL: £3941

Hiya, Just looking for some advice if I could please? I want to upgrade the current HDD, running my operating system on my Desktop PC, to an SSD. Now obviously I am looking at this upgrade to speed my PC up ... as running Windows 7 on an IDE drive (yes, I know) rus a bit sluggish. Now my question .... what other factors do I have to think about, if I'm looking at this upgrade from a speed point of view. Is the memory, CPU, etc going to counteract what I am doing, and therefore, me not see a difference? I cant tell you the exact specs of my machine, my memory isn't brilliant, and I'm only 18 ... but this is a rough guess ... : Core2Duo Processor (I'm pretty sure its an E6 model, so lets say its between 2GHz - 3 GHz, 1333MHz RAM (4 GB [3GB Usable 32Bit Operating System] DDR2 PC2-5300 @ 667MHz) Are there any other factors that I will have to think about, and with them specs do you think I will notice a difference in the speed of my operating system. Thanks in advance Tom

Good Afternoon Edugeekers! There appears to be an increasing trend in a lot of the clients I maintain reporting "slow networks". On deeper questioning I think its really the schools broadband connection (supposedly 10mb) thats at fault. Almost all of the networks are running with Gigabit switches (there may be the rare 100 speed switch as a n/w extender dotted about), and all are on Win 7, Server2012R2. Wifi on a couple of sites is provided by Ruckus but the majority are powered by Unifi (love it). What I had in mind was to go from room to room with a laptop and running a PING to the DC as well as Google for example as well as running an online Speedtest - but not sure though if that would really help as technically thats between the router and an external server(s). I'd also check the NICs are indeed connecting at 1000mbps from the wall socket as they aught to be. I want to run tests that will prove that the internal network is running at full speed and that it is definitely the broadband thats the fault. What I'd like to ask to ask you is what other software or tools would you have to hand for thorough top-down infrastructure testing. For example is there a more advanced Ping software that can delve deeper into the cabling for example? I look forward to your suggestions and learning some new tools, Many thanks in advance Canaan

OK, I always set aside a small budget for my skunk works or (let see what this is like) So I invested in the fastest HDD I could muster. I was going to build a super fast WSUS machine.. I purchased the Kingston Predator PCIe HyperX 240GB 1400MB/s read 600 Write. I plopped it into an old HP ML110 (So not PCIE2, so a hit on its top speed out the bat) I installed server 2012R2 (in like 15 minutes) already looking good... Anyhow it's the logon times that blew me away... I haven't run a speed test on this drive yet (I expect a penalty because of the bus type) but my crusty old login is just stunning... it's like looking a time lapse of a normal login all the same things happen but without any delay the whole PC runs like that... It is like no PC I've used before.... Anyhow early testing and just WOW... I may get one for my home PC... £200 for 240GB though! Hi All, I am in the middle of a major upgrade of our network and its systems. During this we are re-imaging and rebuilding all the workstations. I have been talking to some colleges and they have achieved a great speed boost from running VB Scripts to move task to run at shutdown etc.. I am no great code developer so I am wondering what you guys do to make your boot and login times faster for your end users? Any suggestions would be great. I have done the obvious and to be honest they are not bad, but the college has been through a bad IT year due to lack of investment and we need to show and massive increase for september. Many Thanks for any suggestions.

Hey all, Well it seems ive gotten a bit over my head. I have an xserve (early 08) with 3 750gb sas drives in a raid 5 4 gb of ram. This server is used to login students and teachers (roughly 500 users although probably only about 90 login at once). Im experiencing odd speed issues although 1 lab seems to work great for some reason and having a hard time figuring out what to look for on the server as far as what could be causing the slowness issues. All users are network account users and with the exception of the 1 lab that works fine it takes 3-4 minutes to login. The server is currently running os 10.5.5. Any help or pointing me in the right direction would be appreciated. -Mactech03
