Hi there, I've developed a software application that utilizes the Ping command to help you check whether the computers you manage on your network are connected and in operation. What makes it special is that it presents the results of continuous monitoring over a period in a calendar format. This helps you identify whether each computer's online status follows a certain pattern. For instance, have you ever wondered why a computer that should be online during weekdays suddenly isn't? Or why a computer that's supposed to stay offline during the weekend has a record of being online? Furthermore, this is a portable, green software, which means it doesn't require installation. You can find the download link (hosted on Google Drive) and the official instructions page here: [Download] [Official Page]. If you have any suggestions for improving its usability, please feel free to share them with me. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. I'd like to apologize in advance if recommending this software violates any rules or guidelines. If there are any issues, kindly let me know, and I will promptly remove this post. Thank you!

www.Pigcat.co.uk Pigcat is a free network monitoring application created by myself. It uses PHP/MYSQL and is packaged with a web server. The aim was to create a very simple network monitor that I can check on my phone and displays the status of all websites, servers and network devices I'm responsible for. Main Features: Monitor any network device that responds to a ping request Monitor Windows Server CPU, Memory and Disk usage via WMI Monitor websites actual uptime by checking for text on the page Interactive graphs for historic data Mobile friendly interface Secure settings section Feel free to give it a try and let me know if you have any issues. Hi HP/Aruba switches. We have about 30. All are on the same VLAN as the servers. We have a set server as the IP manager for the switches. I was trying to change a port's VLAN today but was unable to connect to the switch I needed. Also unable to ping it. Can ping and connect to all the other switches in the same cabinet/comms room from the same server. Can ping the same switch from all the other switches I can connect to from that server. Can ping every switch (including the one that I can't from the server) from my workstation which is on a different VLAN. Cannot ping this one switch from any server on the same vlan as the switches. Haven't yet tried to connect to the switch directly via a cable but I'm hoping that works or we're a tad screwed. Any ideas as to why this might be happening? I am not a network expert in anyway. In theory all the switches have exactly the same config as far as management and VLANs are concerned. I wait expectantly TIA

Hi Guys, First off, I have only been working as an apprentice technician in a school for about 3 weeks now. I have been tasked with updating the Kaspersky anti virus on 229 computers which need it. However I am having a problem. I have physically turned on all the machines which need updating, and then I will use Kaspersky to remotely update them all. The problem is, 95-100% of the time, Kaspersky is unable to communicate with the computers, and also I am unable to ping them. They are definately turned on and are all plugged in as they should be. They can even log on to the network. So then why can't the anti virus find them? Using windows 7 on all computers and windows 2008 R2 for the network. Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks

Were having a few problems here with servers going down overnight (when no one is here) and at weekends. Now the problem with the servers is with the suppliers, but in the mean time it would be good to be notified when they went down. Just wondering if there is a simple programme that can be run in the background to ping the servers and send an e-mail when they go down. any ideas? mb

Hello all, We have recently created 3 new wireless networks at our school. Everything seemed to work fine but now our windows 7 computers take a long time to log in. While troubleshooting I found 2 odd things. 1st- in command prompt when i do "ping server" most of the computers return the wrong IP address. They all give 1 of 4 IPs (the right IP, the IP to our Student wireless network, the IP to our faculty wireless or the Ip to our guest network). When searching this issue i found out this " When you perform a ping that uses a name instead of an IP address, the name has to be resolved to an IP address. If the name is that of the server, the IP address is returned as an address from the network adapter that is at the top or bottom of the network bindings order. This usually will be the last network adapter that was installed, and this may not be the interface that you expect to be used. Therefore, the ping command returns an incorrect IP address." Ive tried this soultion and nothing changes. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/981953 However, after spending hours tinkering with the binding order in every order possible they all still comeback wrong. I've tried flushing DNS on the computers and still they come in at random each time (1 of the 4). 2nd- When i do "ipconfig/all" everything comes back correct. EXCEPT! that for the fact that the IP "lease obtained date" always has a crazy date some say 1879. Any suggestions? Please and Thank you!!

Very new to DNS - never really done anything much with it before so trying to pick bits up as I go along. So.. I can't ping google, or any other website external from the network. I can however access the websites? Is this something simple?

Hello, all.. Caveat here - I'm not an Infrastructure person. I'm primarily desktop. So any laughably poor explanations abobut the comms setup are down to that I'm having an issue in at least one of my schools. It may be happening elsewhere, but the nature of the issue means it's difficult to pin down. In a nutshell - I have workstations which seem to be losing their WINS/DNS registration FAR too quickly. To describe the symptoms, I'll use an example of a made-up workstation called OFFICEPC01 with a made-up IP address of 10.11.12.13 MONDAY 11am - OFFICEPC01 powered up From my (or any) workstation located in the school, I can open CMD and PING OFFICEPC01 and I'll get a reply from 10.11.12.13. I can connect to OFFICEPC01's ADMIN$, look at the registry, files on C: from the comfort of my workstation. MONDAY 2pm - OFFICEPC01 switched off From my (or any) workstation located in the school, I open CMD and PING OFFICEPC01. I get a request timed out from 10.11.12.13 Pretty much what you'd expect. TUESDAY 11am - OFFICEPC01 still powered off OFFICEPC01 has been switched off since yesterday. From my (or any) workstation located in the school, I open CMD and PING OFFICEPC01. I get "Unknown host". In other words, the WINS/DNS resolution is gone. If I power OFFICEPC01 back up, then it's business as normal. This loss of WINS/DNS isn't happening to all PCs, but it IS happening. I can reproduce this with an ICT suite - power them all up on Monday. It's pretty much guaranteed that if I try to PING all 21 on Tuesday, at least 5 will return Unknown host. Weirdly, I can take this to the other extreme - I can have a PC powered off for weeks (during the Summer break, like now), and WINS/DNS will still resolve its name. I should say that PINGing the FQDN doesn't produce any different results. PING OFFICEPC01.school.authority still produces the Unknown host. In terms of our setup, we have 2 DHCP servers - both living in our DC. I believe(!) that 1 is the main DHCP for one half of the authority, while the other is the main DHCP for the other half. I believe(!) that should DHCP1 fail, DHCP2 is meant to kick in.. I'm not 100% certain on that, but I can confirm if need be. In terms of WINS, we have 2 - WINS1 and WINS2. WINS1 lives in a High School (the one I'm in) and is the primary WINS for half the authority. WINS2 is in the DC and is the secondary for that half of the authority. These 2 roles are mirrored for the other half of the authority (as in WINS2=Primary, WINS1=Secondary) In terms of DNS, we have 8. One per High School and one in the DC. Each High school and its linked Primary have the High School DNS as the primary DNS, and the DC one as the secondary. All workstations and their IPs are setup using DHCP. We don't use statics for anything except servers. Which live on a different VLAN from the workstations. The worksations can have 1 of 2 different VLANs assigned to them - Admin or Curricular. The host name loss issue described above happens to workstations on either. I don't know if that's enough information - please shout loudly if you need anything else. Cheers, Gerard

Whenever our internet connection fails, I have to run through a series of checks, namely: 1. Check I can ping the edge router in school 2. Check I can ping the headend router at RM 3. Check I can ping the DNS server/Exchange Server etc... at our LEA 4. Check I can ping the RM proxy Depending on the results of the above, I will then connect through to the switch on which the edge router connects and run various pings from that. Eventually, I narrow it down to a) Bust switch b) Bust edge router c) External issue Now, are there any perl gurus out there who could code up a script that checks pings and their results? Also, is it possible to script a telnet or ssh session, and running a command on that session, looking at the result it returns? Cheers in advance...

I have a share on my Win 7 machine. I've just tried accesing it from an XP machine and it can't find it. XP can't ping the Win7 machine either. This has started recently. It was all working a few weeks ago. The share is for making msi packages with WinInstall. I've been using it all year no problems, today I've tried to use it to make an image and XP machines can't see the Win7 share or ping the Win7 machine. I think some windows update may have broken it. Previously the firewall was switched off in the domain profile. I've switched it back on and set an exception rule to allow ping - still no joy. Any ideas? Thanks.

An interesting one this. I've recently set up a second 2008 based forest (say 2008.local) alongside the current 2003 forest (2003.local), both running at 2003 functionality level as they have a two way trust between them. DNS wise, I've zone transferred one into the other and visa versa and everything appears cool in the fact that I can ping addresses in the other forest, both client machines and servers. DNS is on both servers, DHCP is on 2003.local and both machines have static IPs. The problem is that after a few days I can no longer ping the domain name 2003.local from 2008.local but I can visa versa. I can also still ping client machines from and to both forests fine. The error that I'm greeted with is the standard 'Ping request could not find host 2003.local. Please check the name and try again'. The only way to temporarily fix this at the moment is to restart the 2008.local domain controller every so often! What do we reckon?

We're probably the last school in the history of the world to make the leap to DHCP (no giggling at the back, there was a good reason for it). Anyway I used to use Angry IP Scanner to check various machines were switched on. This was easy because our IT suites had predictable sequential IP addresses. I now need something that'll work on a list of computernames. Any ideas people.
