Hello all, We have recently created 3 new wireless networks at our school. Everything seemed to work fine but now our windows 7 computers take a long time to log in. While troubleshooting I found 2 odd things. 1st- in command prompt when i do "ping server" most of the computers return the wrong IP address. They all give 1 of 4 IPs (the right IP, the IP to our Student wireless network, the IP to our faculty wireless or the Ip to our guest network). When searching this issue i found out this " When you perform a ping that uses a name instead of an IP address, the name has to be resolved to an IP address. If the name is that of the server, the IP address is returned as an address from the network adapter that is at the top or bottom of the network bindings order. This usually will be the last network adapter that was installed, and this may not be the interface that you expect to be used. Therefore, the ping command returns an incorrect IP address." Ive tried this soultion and nothing changes. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/981953 However, after spending hours tinkering with the binding order in every order possible they all still comeback wrong. I've tried flushing DNS on the computers and still they come in at random each time (1 of the 4). 2nd- When i do "ipconfig/all" everything comes back correct. EXCEPT! that for the fact that the IP "lease obtained date" always has a crazy date some say 1879. Any suggestions? Please and Thank you!!

Unfortunatly, I have not resolved this issue. However, I don't know if you use a freezing agent like deepfreeze or clean slate but i found that if you disable this protection and create a general log in ie: Student, Teacher ect... then log in and re-enable the protection that profile will get cached and then be able to log in in seconds. Other than that quick work around or CNT-ALT-DLT i have not been able to solve this issue. Please if any of you solve it please let me know.

This is a re-post from a problem posted last year that was never resolved. I recently installed Windows 8 on 24 machines. The problem is the computers take forever to log onto the domain for first time users but all the users are first time users because we use deep freeze. I have disabled the 'Show first sign-in animation' GPO and enabled verbose mode. All verbose reports is "preparing windows" When I domain join one of these suite computers during a users first login I get the following screen This screen stays for a long time - I recorded 5 minutes several times. I don't believe this is a DNS issue because the DNS settings are the same throughout the campus and Windows 7 and XP both log in to the domain within seconds. I even updrafed 8 of the PCs to windows 8.1 to see if that would resolve the issue but it has not. Entirely by accident one of the students realized that if you press CTRL + ALT + DEL to interrupt the Preparing Computer screen you can then access the desktop immediately and everything is fully functional. This makes me think that there isn't any vital config going on during this preparing computer stage and it is probably hanging. Has anyone else encountered this? I am not sure what to do about this long login wait. Thanks, Joe

@DMcCoy I thought the same but why then when i click Ctrl + alt+ delete at any moment during(even the very begging as soon as the words appear) " Preparing Windows" is it able to load the desktop and a fully functional start menu?

This maybe a dumb question but: I know windows 8.1 has the ability to boot to the desktop. Now my problem is i want to set this setting for every user that logs on to the PC from the domain. How do i go about doing this? I tried setting it in both local and domain admin accounts but those setting do not apply to everyone else that logs on.

Dont Do it!! Haha we have 25 windows 8.1( were originally 8) pcs. Troubles? where do i start: first off the kids and the staff hated Windows 8 because of its completely new OS design. No start Menu, bulky tile menus made it difficult for students to find what they were looking for. We also had an issue were when the machines were left idle for a certain period of time the connection to the server to login got disconnected and we would have to restart the machines. I thought maybe it was just windows 8 so i decided to upgrade them to windows 8.1 As far as i know Windows 8.1 can not be pushed out via WSUS(to do multiple computers at once) so i had to update each computer manually buy using the Microsoft app store. It about 3 hours per machine to update to windows 8.1. Now everyone liked windows 8.1 a lot better it runs better than 8 and kind of has a start button now. The menus are a little bit more user friendly. Now my biggest gripe with 8.1 is it is now taking my machines anywhere from 3-4 minutes to login. In comparison to my 100+ Xp and 7 machines that log onto the network in seconds. Now i know some of my trouble may be the result of my environment but over all id say stay away from Windows 8 and 8.1 and stick to windows 7.

They seem to get the IP's in time. I never thought of that as a problem because our Windows xp and Windows 7 machines log in in a heart beat and are fully functional( meaning they are connected to the network). Hello All, This is my first post here on Edugeek! I have a fairly complicated problem i need your help with. Ok so I inherited a schools network heres a little info below Server: Windows server 2008 R2 We do not use roaming profiles we have ~100 Xp machines (work like champs) we have ~30 Win 7 machines (also work like champs) we have 25 window 8.1 machines that are a thorn in my side All our computers run a "clean slate" program that reinstates the hard drive to factory form at the end of each day so no matter what the kids do the computers will always remain "brand new" Question: I have 25 windows 8.1 computers that take 3-4 mins to start on each hard reboot! as you can guess this is a pain in the butt. It used to take even longer because of the "first sign-in animation" where windows explains how to use Windows 8. However, i manually disabled this function. Windows 8 take almost 1:30 "preparing windows" but if you press control alt delete it boots straight to the desktop with ease. This leads me to believe nothing is actually happing when windows is being "prepaired". I found a very very similar post by @AndiMarv here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-8/111717-windows-8-domain-login-issue.html but that was never resolved. Does anyone know how to remove this seemingly unnecessary step in the boot process? Any help would be greatly appreciated
