Anyone aware of ways that access can be limited on certain applications on Server 2008? I need my technicians to be able to access Active Directory and various other things on the servers like event logs, but there are some things I do not want them accessing like Group Policy, Exchange Management, Sophos Console. I know the obvious thing to do is to tell them not to use the applications but I don't suppose anyone is aware whether you can password applications like this?

Dear all, Can anyone recommend a good caching and filtering system? We currently use RM Smart Cache and it is just awful. I am looking to change to something else that actually works! I have used Smoothwall School Guardian in the past which I liked. However I am not sure if they do caching or just filtering. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi all, I have been asked by SLT if I can arrange to go and see an Independent School that uses ISAMS with some colleageues (from Admin, Finance and Curriculum). We are thinking of getting this product but before we do we would like to hear some experiences of it from another school that use it across the board. We are based in Kingston, Surrey so would be looking for a school that is not too far away. It needs to be an independent school (up to 13 only) that uses ISAMS. Is there anyone that would be willing to take us for a couple of hours? We would also need to see your Finance department and Admissions / Admin, as well as speak to your Director of Studies or someone else high up on the curriculum side. Many thanks.

Definitely too long. I am after something more basic. This is the annoying thing about it. All the courses are really official and too long! I just want to find a small training centre / classroom environment where they do this with a small group of people who have limited knowledge and skills.

Does anyone know of any good one or two day basic AD training? I would like to send my technician on something. Something that incorporates a little bit of policies maybe. Preferably in the South East region. I know there used to be a woman named Sarah Something in the Reigate area but she doesn't do it anymore, which is a shame as she was really good.

Hi all, I am looking to send my technician out on a school visit for a day as he does not have much experience of seeing other schools in an ICT environment and I think he will benefit from a bit of real experience! He has been an IT Tech here for a few years but then I came along(!) as IT Manager and moved all the systems over from RM to Vanilla. He has never had any experience of this and is used to just calling up RM whenever something goes wrong, so as you can imagine he can struggle at times with certain things. I just want him to be able to see another school who are similar to us, see the way they work and how they prioritise jobs and get things done. He lacks in being proactive so if there is anyone out there who feels proud of their hard working IT department and would like to show them off a bit, then I would be grateful if you would offer to have him shadow one of your technicians for the day, just to see the general things that come up each day. In return I am happy to have one of your technicians on another day. It's all good for the CPD! They type of school I am looking for would meet the following criteria: A department of two or more IT staff Server 2008 preferably (not essential) Non-RM network A large amount of daily support jobs coming in In Surrey (or even Kent as that is where he lives) Fairly large school (about 400 or more students) Preferably an independent school, as we work in one, but this isn't really important. If anyone thinks they might be able to help I would really aprpeciate it. Please woulod you PM me in this case. Thanks.

Jon Boy: Thanks for that - but it didn't work after disabling the policies then trying again, rebooting, logging off etc etc.

We are using roaming profiles with Windows 7 (and some Vista). I do not use scripts to map the drives but use the group policy setting: User Config / Preferences / Windows Settings / Drive Maps.

Yes I can manually do it no problem. So there's obviously not an access issue. The strange thing is that I created a test account in the same OU as all the other students (with the same security rights) and that one sees all the drives fine. It's so odd!

Dear all, I am hoping someone can help. Yesterday I was trying to set a policy to disallow students from browsing the network and typing in a UNC path to the server, ie \\servername. I enabled the policies "Remove Run from Start Menu" and "Remove Network Icon from Start Menu" and initial testers. However when the students logged in they weren't getting ANY mapped drives at all. Not even their home drives. Therefore this morning I have changed those policies back so they are not configured. However the students still cannot access their mapped drives and I am wondering if there is another reason for this or maybe I have changed something without realising it! They basically cannot see any mapped drives but can see the CD drive as normal. (C drive is blocked but it's supposed to be). Is there any other policies that stop users being able to see mapped drives that maybe me or my technician may have accidentally set?
