This morning I finally pulled the plug on our on premises Exchange 2007 server, uninstalling it before killing the Server 2008 VM it was hosted on. Our move to Office 365 was completed 3 weeks ago, so the VM was on borrowed time. As I uninstalled Exchange, it took me on a trip down memory lane. It was originally installed on a decrepit Pentium 4 server, later moving into a Citrix XenServer environment before finally being migrated into Hyper-V. It was originally installed to replace an abomination of a setup that used Pegasus Mail, Mercury SMTP server and some other crazy Novell Netware shenanigans to give the school email. No webmail, no mobile access, no standard usernames etc. In the last 7.5 years of use, the server has generally run very smoothly with very few hassles or issues in all that time. Millions of emails were sent, received and collected into mailboxes, mailboxes came and went as staff and students came and went. Occsaionally there were times when the ISP smarthost we used to deliver mail had issues and we couldn't send and recieve mails for sometimes 2-3 days. Or the times when the ADSL line went down due to external factors and mail couldn't flow. It was the first time I ever ordered a SSL certificate and I remember all the joys around getting our domain in shape to have the certificate issued by Comodo. Brave pioneer staff members started hooking up their BlackBerry's for mobile mail, later moving to iPhones and Androids. I can never forget all the frustrating times trying to get this or that early model Android phones to behave when connecting to Exchange, or telling people that when your password changed at school, you had to update in your phone as well or mail wouldn't work. Fighting with the quirks of OWA in later Internet Explorer versions and trying to explain to staff why their mail wouldn't look right in any other browser. Explaining for the umpteenth time that no, you couldn't get a graphical signature in OWA, it's a limitation in Exchange and there's nothing I can do about it. She's gone now, but will be fondly remembered for the hard work and being there in the "early days" :sniff :sniff

Its baffling us, and we have tried pretty much everything - updates, etc. It started when we had a large amount of the 'autorun' virus so Sophos was hogging all the memory. We have since put sophos on its own server, but we still have this problem. Has anyone experienced this before? mb

Does anyone know what the best practice for this setting on clients is? When should I use it? When should I not? What are the Pros/Cons of this setting?

Hi all Just a little question for you. Is there any worth to doing a Exchange 2007 training course that deals primarily with configuration? The reason I ask is that installing Exchange 2007 is pretty easy and with their Best Practices Analyzer tool, you can get pretty much everything as far as setup goes sorted, but where I'm a little worried is the actual config of Exchange goes i.e. how do I know if i configured everything correctly? are the send connectors setup correctly and do i really understand how they work? did i manage to move all the databases and files to the appropriate iSCSI storage places? etc, etc.. Naturally there is a wealth of info out there but I'm that sort of paranoid kind of person that makes me doubt whether everything I've setup is correct and safe from problems. I found this: MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Configuration - Microsoft Certification Training - SEEK Learning UK that looks to be the kind of thing that would echo what I was after. Has anyone been on one of these courses or anything similar? Was it worth doing? Incidentally, I've had a bit of training that covered the overall stuff i.e. various scenario's, do's and dont's and general stuff, but its the configuring side of things that I'd want to know whether its worth it [or not]. Cheers Nath.

Hi People, I hope someone can help me out here, I have setup a new exchange 2007 server on a windows 2008 member server in a 2003 Active directory. The installation finished ok, all the services have started, I chose the typical install with outlook 2003 clients connecting, and generally left everything stock. I have created all my mailboxes setup a few computers with outlook sent emails and nothing arrives in the inbox. The information store is working because when I login as the same user on multiple computers I can see the sent items folder contains everything that's been attempted to send thus far. I don't see a SMTP service is that right? I don't get any NDR's unless the time-out is not set. Pretty much everything is default

Hi, URGENT HELP NEEDED! we have a client we look after at work that is having mail routing problems. Internal mail in fine, it is simply anything that is leaving the organisation or coming into the organisation. I am pretty new to exchange and have been lumbered with this problem and am under pressure to get it fixed. below are the results of another engineers testing smtp port 25 Testing inbound SMTP mail flow for domain '[email protected]'. The Microsoft Connectivity Analyzer failed to test inbound SMTP mail flow. Test Steps Attempting to retrieve DNS MX records for domain 'DOMAIN.com.au'. One or more MX records were successfully retrieved from DNS. Additional Details Testing Mail Exchanger mail.DOMAIN.com.au. One or more SMTP tests failed for this Mail Exchanger. Test Steps Attempting to resolve the host name mail.DOMAIN.com.au in DNS. The host name resolved successfully. Additional Details Testing TCP port 25 on host mail.DOMAIN.com.au to ensure it's listening and open. The port was opened successfully. Additional Details Analyzing SMTP Capabilities for server mail.DOMAIN.com.au:25 SMTP Capabilities were analyzed successfuly. Additional Details Attempting to send a test email message to [email protected] using MX mail.DOMAIN.com.au. Delivery of the test email message failed. Additional Details The server returned status code -1 - The operation has timed out. Exception details: Message: The operation has timed out. Type: System.Net.Mail.SmtpException Stack trace: at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.Send(MailMessage message) at Microsoft.Exchange.Tools.ExRca.Tests.SmtpMessageTest.PerformTestReally There have been multiple tests run, some email gets into the exchange server, but can take several hours. I have had an email from an engineer that is now on annual leave to tell me what he has tried to do, some of which is: - Disable Antivirus services - Enable POP3 and IMAP4 services - Restarted MS Exchange AD topology and Information Store services - Reboot server - Disable Windows firewall private and Public profile - Created new recipient connector - Created new SNMP connector for port 587 - Changed FQDN of all recipient connectors From remote.DOMAIN.com.au to mail.DOMAIN.com.au and vice versa - Changed remote server Ip addressed range to allow all connection for recipient connector All have been tried and tested yet no joy. he suspects maybe MX hosting service provider issue where email gets delayed or dropped. but not sure where to go with this. Any advise people? thanks in advance!!

Hi, We allow students two methods for bringing files in to school currently (until we decide on a VLE), first method, usb pen drives, second method email. Due to misuse of email during lessons and teachers struggling with tools such as NetSupport for blocking pages we have come to a point where we are now using transport rules to block KS3/KS4 students emailing other KS3/KS4 students. The rules currently block (silently drop) emails sent to KS3/KS4 students from outside our organisation. The rules currently block (silently drop) emails sent from KS3/KS4 students to anyone outside our organisation. The rules currently block (silently drop) emails sent from member of distribution list ( KS3/KS4 email group ) to a member of distribution list ( KS3/KS4 email group ). So basically KS3/KS4 students can email their teachers and KS5 students (on pain of being beaten up I suppose!). This is working, and working great, except I would like to permit them access to email themselves if possible. I realise that if Student1 were to email Student1 although they do not receive the email they will still have the mail (with any attachment) in their Sent Items. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with any ideas how we can work the transport rules to permit Student1 to email Student1 without being able to email Student2. Looking forward to your responses!

I am a bit confused here. We have Exchange 2007 on site and it has generally run alright for the years I've been here (it was in place when I arrived), and every now and then when we have a planned power outage, something seems to go wrong with it when it's powered down. This time round, TLS has apaprently stopped working. When I try and email in from my gmail account I get told that "The error that the other server returned was: 454 454 TLS currently unavailable (state 8)." and it takes 24 hours for the message to arrive. This seems to be by design with regards to gmail, to alert to problems, although it was never a problem before. When powering back up this time I removed the old domain controllers that had been demoted last week, so that may be relevant. I also deleted an expired Web Server certificate from the email server that had been issued by an enterprise CA that I destroyed a couple of weeks ago (it was easier than moving it from 2003 x86 to 2008R2 x64 given that no valid certificates were out). Initially, after power up, Exchange wasn't accepting external emails - I could email around the organisation, I could email out, but nothing was coming in. I had to allow all permission groups on the Default and Client receive connectors to get that working again; no idea how it had worked in the past but this is a common theme with this Exchange server and power outages. I've tried running Enable-ExchangeCertificate -service:smtp for the certificate the server currently uses (GoDaddy, for the OWA etc.) and Exchange tells me it is using that certificate for SIP.W (i.e. everything) but the TLS is still not doing anything. Can anyone who actually knows something about Exchange shed any light on this? I'm just very confused that it worked before the power outage and doesn't anymore (and yes, I am considering Office 365 in the new academic year, funny you should ask)

Hey Guys, Been racking my brain with this one all night. I'm trying to prepare my AD Schema on our Exchange server. I m running the exchange server on Windows 2003 64bit and my AD is sitting on a Windows 2003 server. When i try to execute the 'setup /prepareschema' command i get a pop up box with the message 'Go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components.' I have installed .net 2.0 with service pack, Powershell, and Windows 2003 SP2. I m in the middle of installing .Net 3.0 to see if that makes a difference. Any assistance would be very helpful.

we have just given email to students and to start there were no problems but recently we have had students email the whole school and with it the email addresses of everyone else in the 'To' section. Is there any way that i can hide all the names, so if they send an email like this again then nobodys name is shown?

We have just moved from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 and noticed that the biggest change is that you dont use AD to monitor mailboxes. So we've just been creating the mailboxs by adding new mailbox. Is there some one that i can use AD to create a new user and it creates a mailbox for that user without the need to create a new mailbox after the user has been created?

We have VSS making shadow copies successfully twice daily. When SBS runs the SBS 2008 Backup for the drives, it does not backup the Exchange mailbox databases. As a workaround, I created a script that dismounts the Exchange mailbox databases, performs the backup, and then remounts the databases successfully at night. The mailboxes are in a dismounted state for approximately 45 minutes. I would feel much better with a full solution instead of this workaround. Any ideas? Thank you.

OK I've got my users sync'd using dirsync to my pupils OU and I now have 815 pupils sitting on o365. I've manually activated a test pupil, located and given the Student ProPlus and A2 plan with lync, sharepoint and onedrive. NO Exchange (yet) Q1: I login as the student and the onedrive is not available? so none of the online word etc is available. How do I enable his onedrive and will I have to do this en-mass for every pupil later in powershell? Q2: How do I get powershell to talk to my office 365? I'm looking at scripts on the forums I think it's doeable.. I've added the department "pupils" to my pupils and that should sync in a few hours... Q3: I have onsite Exchange 2007 what are the broad steps in getting pupils accounts over to O365 with in mind that I "MAY" move staff over later? Anything I should be doing right away before I give pupils the news about free office?

Hi All, I have recently noticed that when I go on Disconnected Mailbox on our EMC it says "There are no items to show in this view". I have tried Connecting to Server Un-mounting then mounting the Disconnected Mailbox database in the Database Recovery Management tool Running the clean-mailbox database "Database". this comes up with the message "The mailbox database you specified is a recovery mailbox database, you cannot apply this task to it." I've been googling this for a day and have got no where. Has anyone ran into this problem before and if so please tell me you found a way to resolve it. Cheers Dan

Hi We have exchange 2007 and outlook 2010 in our network. We have a mail box called “CPDS” within our organisation. I would like to achieve 2 things: 1) Any one emails [email protected] mail address, this mail must be forwarded to a distribution group called "CPStaffs” and within the "CPStaffs” distribution group there are 4 recipients. 2) Also any one emails [email protected] mail address,a CC must go to the another user mail address within the same domain ie [email protected]. Please help, is there a way to achieve this. Any tutorials much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Just wondering the impact of changing our domain name (currently a .sch.uk). We run MS Exchange 2007. If we were to register a new domain (or speak with nominet), I'm guessing MS Exchange could still run under the old domain name & just forward mail to the new domain. Could this be hosted on the same server or would it require a different server? Open to thoughts & suggestions! Andy P.S. Also after a domain registrar who can handle .sch.uk domains where I'm able to control the DNS online?

Hi All! Does anyone know whether it's possible to set the Out Of Office to activate based on the Calendar entries rather than just setting it On/Off or manually scheduling it each time? I use my calendar for all my meetings etc. and would love it to activate automatically when I'm out of the office or off-site etc. Thanks in advance, Rick

[ms office - 2010] Outlook 2010, Exchange 2007 Public folders
karls5 posted a topic in Office Software
Hi We have a problem displaying Home page assigned Public folders in Outlook 2010. We have Exchange 2007. We have a public folder, which we have a home page assigned to a webpage that displays room bookings. It displays fine on Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007, but does not display in Outlook 2010. It just displays a mail pane. When you right click a the Public folder and bring up the Home Page, there is no address assigned and it is greyed out. If you create a new public folder in Outlook 2010 and try to assign a home page the same happens, it is greyed out. Has anyone else had this? Thanks -
Morning everyone, We have ran into a little problem with our Samsung Galaxy phones. Before we use to run all blackberry but now (thankfully) we have moved to android. My problem is that when we had the blackberry's we could see the "other" contacts in our outlook on the blackberry's. Now we have moved we can only see the standard Home, Mobile, Business on our phones. Any ideas how to fix this without going through every contact on around 30 peoples outlook? Rick

Hi all Here's a little interesting one. We have a user that, for reasons I cant go into, would (if its possble) like to use a shared mailbox as his default mailbox rather than his own mailbox. Cant seem to google anything on doing this, as crazy as it sounds. I wager that I could do something like a rewrite kind of Transport Rule to make it appear that he's sending from this shared mailbox, but just wondering if anyone knows or can suggest a proper way to do it. We are on Exchange 2010 btw, but alot of things from Exch 2007 would apply so if u have a suggestion basd on 2007, I'm all ears too Many thanks to any that can help us with this little monkey

We are upgrading to server 2008 R2 over the summer. The current exchange server is on server 2003 x64. Is it a good idea to do a simple upgrade on this server or is a fresh install better? With Service pack 3 for Exchange 2007 supporting 2008 R2, is it a better idea to migrate the data from the old 2003 server to a clean 2008 server? If so does anyone have any experience of this?
-
A couple of years ago we were lucky enough to have RM come charge a tidy sum to install Exchange 2003 onto our CC3 network. (Please no rants about 8 gig C:\ and RM's commissioning policy, we're all better than that aren't we?) The server was so underspecced it is now on it's last legs using all possible processing power. Anyway that's the problem now for the solution...... We are in the process of virtualising and want to move over to exchange 2007. We have more than sufficient processing power to have as many servers as we need. Wondering if anyone out there has migrated from Exchange 2003 to 2007 in a CC3 environment before? and how did you do it? Have a CC3 domain with 6 DC's & 1 exchange 2003 member server. Can make as many new servers as required.
