Our Performing Arts department has a requirement to compress videos, as the exam board has a limit of 600MB (I assume this is per video, and that some videos are larger than this). We have VLC installed on all PCs, so that may be the best way forward; does anyone use this? I found a guide at https://www.capcut.com/resource/vlc-compress-video#3 ways to compress video with VLC Media Player however if anyone has a guide for teachers, or any suggested settings, or any experience of doing this, that would be great. Ideally I want the process to be carried out by the Performing Arts subject leader, who will be submitting the video, so the process can't be too complicated, otherwise they may ask us to do it, which adds a layer of complexity (and, potentially, responsibility!) Alternatively, I see there are free sites online that offer to resize videos; can anyone confirm if any of these suits are suitable and offer good enough quality? This could be for all sorts of uses; performing arts performances to exam boards is just one example that has cropped up for us. I did try searching for an existing thread but didn't see one. Many thanks in advance!

Hi all, I've got problem with hardware compression on my backup Exec setup. I've checked this thread but although that seems similar it doesn't strike me as being quite the same. I know the files I'm backing up compress very well (tested this by compressing to .7z using 7-zip). However, when I tell my software to hardware compress, which my drive supports, I get 1.01:1 compression at best which is virtually useless given that my tests show it should work better. (admittedly hardware compression and 7zip will be using different algorithms). Any advice appreciated. Hardware: HP Ultrium 1760 width LTO4 tapes (800GB, 1.6TB compressed at 2:1) Software: Symantec backup exec 11d OS: Windows Server 2003 Files: images, "office" documents Jonathan

Has anyone written anything to scan folders on your file server and compress video files that are poorly compressed, from ipads, phones etc? First issue I've thought of is working out which videos haven't been compressed well already.

Hi, just thought I would put a post up about the Compression on the 7110 as I am just playing in the simulator dragging students home drives (copies of obviously) onto it to see how it compresses a selection of randomness as it were and WOW I am impressed. I grabbed 17 student home areas, curent size around about 750MB, compressed down to 430MB so thats a good compression. I will be honest and say that I have got the top level of compression on with that, so the CPU is taking a hit (got big rain drops on the front for it at present copying over some sample media studies folders full of premier files etc) so I know its stressing it, so maybe top level isn't the best for day to day running but you can switch it all on the fly which is a great feature (top level may be good on day 2 day running when not moving over large GBs of files perhaps?) Anyway, with that compression on a random selection of home areas this could be a good space saving tool as well as flexible and powerfull storage
