VNC. Why do school techies dislike it?
iaatkinson replied to visualman's topic in Educational Software
I completely agree with you on this one... I will rephrase my badly written post! The idea was conceived by a couple of chaps who had experience managing school IT infrastructure. The product has developed over several years with input coming via their forums and support desk, allowing educators to suggest features and changes. This on top of a stable product, makes it an ideal choice for what you are trying to achieve here and I am using the product to do just what is described. -

I wouldn't use VNC - for me it allows too much access, even witht the client sat there idle. We use Impero and I could not champion it enough. It's a product I've been with since V1.0 and it's best in my opinion as its been written by people who worked in education! The broadcast facility would enable the staff to deliver full screen copies of any work on their screen, straight to the pupils laptop etc. Not to add the fact that the logging, hierarchical web filtering, file send and remote log on etc are all valuable lab management tools. -
We are looking to appoint an experienced Senior IT/Development Technician to fill a vacancy in our hard working team. Previous educational experience is compulsory as the role will entail working across multiple sites within our area, supporting local primary schools. Candidates will have a strong working knowledge of both Server 2008 R2/Windows 7 and have an interest in web/content creation. Previous experience of Cisco network hardware, Adobe Creative products and Lion Server/OS X is desirable. Responsible for: 2 x IT Technician 1 x Media/Helpdesk Technician This is a permanent, full time position working 37.5 hours a week with 25 days annual leave. Use InTouch - it has all the features of Schoolcomms but has the added ability to be run from most of the student focused modules of SIMS. If you are logging behaviour, reward, detentions etc you can email/SIMS message/text all contacts (staff, parents, students) involved and use templates as you would sending mail merged letters home. We have ours set up to use email by default so that all receiving staff get the messages about targeted students, late registers, emergency call outs etc, straight into their outlook. Have only had it a few weeks and there were issues to start with - its is fairly resource heavily is you already have a lot of home screen widgets configured in SIMS. Ian

Vikpaw - sorry when you say hotfix is it a patch that is available or simply the generic solutions provided on the supportnet solution? Many thanks. Ian

Hi Folks, Thanks for this - any news as to why? Our LA support team have no idea what the issue is and are suggesting macro settings in Word - needless to say this doesn't work! Many thanks.

I am having the same issue - registry looks fine, standard notebooks are fine and inbuilt content is all ok. The issue happens when inking occurs either within the ink layer or straight into the notebook. Can anybody suggest a fix other than trash the notebook and start again? What OS are you guys using?

SMART Notebook 10.8/Product Drivers + Windows 7
iaatkinson replied to iaatkinson's topic in Educational Software
Hi, Richard - thank you for this, I had a similar issue with 10.6 and several reg keys later the issues was sorted. 10.8 appears to be a different kettle of fish. Sted - Interesting, I will look into that also, we are using 32bit but there does seem to a common theme. Ian- 6 replies

SMART Notebook 10.8/Product Drivers + Windows 7
iaatkinson replied to iaatkinson's topic in Educational Software
Hi Richard, Thank you for that - I am using clean build Win 7 Ent machines, imaged via WDS (lite-touch) then using a single GPO to apply our base software on a target basis. All seems to install fine (although yes can take 15+ mins due to volume of software) but for some reason, even though the product driver is installed and listed, the board still either stays red or flashes green. Any idea? Ian- 6 replies

Hi Folks, Having issues with Windows 7 and SMART Notebook 10.8 - the correct device drivers are installed via GPO with item level targeting. Issue is that now some of the units are picking up USB power (via the USB speaker hub) but not picking up the SMART product drivers (light flashes green). Intermittently users get a solid green light and are able to work ok. Users that have worked fine for several lessons are now reporting that the boards are unresponsive. Any ideas or similar issues?
