Morning, I currently have a load of HP Procurve 1800's 24/G and 1810's 24/G edge switches. They have done a fine job and when any have failed have been replaced without quibble. I am looking to buy a couple more edge switches but 1800 series are obsolete now. Any recommendations around the same pricing? Not had great experiences with Netgear over the years, so anything else would be good!

Hi folks, please help me regain a little sanity, and reduce further hair loss! I have a case open with Netgear about this but thought it worth asking here in case anyone has seen anything similar. We've just replaced a single core switch with two, split over two sites and linked via 10Gb fibre. There is an M5300-52G3 and an M5300-28GF3 linked as a remote stack via 10Gb fibre and managed as a single stack. Each has a number of GS7xxTP PoE switches attached for wifi access and some GS748Ts for wired access. The ports that the access points plug into on the 748TPs are configured as tagged for VLANS 10, 20, 24, 28, 32, untagged for VLAN 3 and have a PVID of 3. The 748TP trunks back to the stack have all VLANS tagged. On the stack trunk ports connected to the 748TPs the VLANS are all set as tagged.

VLAN SSID/Auth type Subnet Purpose

3 N/A 192.168.2.0/24 WiFi AP management

10 Dom/PSK and Dom2/RADIUS 10.xx.yy.0/22 Main campus VLAN

20 Student/RADIUS 192.168.20.0/22 Student wifi

24 Staff/RADIUS 192.168.24.0/22 Staff wifi

28 Guest/PSK 192.168.28.0/24 Guest wifi

32 Tablet/PSK 192.168.32.0/22 College Tablets

There is a Windows Server 2008 R2 DC running DHCP for all scopes and NAP for RADIUS authentication. It is plugged in to a port on the 52G3 that is a member of VLAN 10 only and has a PVID of 10. The switch stack is configured for DHCP relay and is using static routing between all of the VLANS mentioned so far. The issue I'm having is that everything on the PSK authenticated networks and also on the RADIUS authenticated parts of VLAN 10 is fine and dandy but on VLANs 20 and 24 a lot of RADIUS traffic seems to be going missing. Access points connected via the 52G3 mostly seem to be working okay (95% of clients authenticate successfully) but RADIUS connections from access points connected via the 28GF3 don't seem to be making it over the stack link to the server; most but not all fail. Consequently almost nobody can connect to the correct wifi on that site. Bizarrely, a few RADIUS requests do manage to make it across so it's unlikely to be a misconfiguration, else none would make it. We're currently working around the issue by attaching staff to a less secure wifi VLAN that uses PSK. Our previous core switch, a forerunner of the M5300-52G3 called GSM7352Sv1, had exactly the same configuration apart from stacking and worked flawlessly so I'm convinced that the server and wifi side of things is not at fault since nothing has changed on them. We replaced the single core switch to reduce the number of fibre runs that traveled a long way over a main road and back again and terminated most of the fibre on the M5300-28GF3. Anyone got any ideas what might be going on here? I'm completely stumped!

Hey all, basically I'm looking to replace a setup here thats become a nightmare. In one of our offices we've a meeting room with two projectors, that are connected to a PC and also two floor boxes with VGA inputs This is all controlled by a Crestron multi switch system with a touchscreen remote - I'm sure at one point this was very shiny and new and lovely, but its a flaming nightmare to deal with. I've now lost my rag with it as its started to require a reboot before each use... So, I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a multi-in/mulit-out AV switch system - preferably with nice big hardware switches ;-) So I'm looking for at least three inputs and two outputs - Ideas?

Have a difficult one here. Does anyone know the reset procedure for the HP 352 HP 30-10010-02 Switch. We've tried the defaults, but no success. In desperate need of accessing them ASAP HP will reset but at the price of £200 per switch and we have 4 to do. Currently running a BruteForce attack but need a quicker method. anyone?

Hi, I'm looking for advice re connecting our main switches... To cut a moderatly long story slightly shorter, we have a Windows 2003 Domain, and we're currently running pretty much all 'dumb' d-link des-1024's switches on our site, with most being connected to one of our two core Procurve 1800-24 switches. Because of the impending installation a VOIP phone system, and replacing the wireless LAN, I will be changing most of the d-links with either Procurve or Netgear 'Smart' POE/Gigabit switches for their VLAN/QOS capabilities (also a good excuse to run gigabit to the workstations too). What I was wondering was how best to connect the switches when they are replaced: 1 - each sub switch to the core switches 2 - 'daisy-chain' one switch off the other from core switches down. I am also moving the servers from their current location (my tinitis-ridden office ) to a dedicated server room which will be linked to my office via 8-core fibre (which i will probably trunk to provide 2Gbps between the two rooms with the Procurve 1800s). Half the school is cabled back to my office and half to the new server room. Another question: Do people reckon Procurve 1800s are good for cores, and if not, any suggestions? Thanks

Ever want bigger switches and the ability to run all hosts on a single subnet without performance degredation. So did some researchers who have devised a way to make layer 2 switchind scale well beyond current barriers. University of California researchers are presenting a paper describing software that they say could make data center networks massively scalable. The researchers say their PortLand software will enable Layer 2 data center network fabrics scalable to 100,000 ports and beyond, and they even have a prototype running at the school’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering’s Jacobs School of Engineering. This inclueds a system that uses psudo MAC addresses to remove almost all of the nasty broadcasts that choke current networks at this scale. How to build a 100,000-port Ethernet switch - Network World The question is: How do you rackmount a 42u switch?

We're just about to add a couple of sites to our existing campus which will require at least an additional 2 fibre connections on our main core swich (currently full). We've also got a new blade chassis (on gigabit ethernet connections) that's hanging off a switch connected to the current core switch. Obviously this is far from ideal so I was thinking given this expansion now would be the ideal time to start looking at a replacement core switch so we can return to a full star network topology with all of the servers hanging directly off the main switch. In terms of connection we'd need the following as a minumum :- *At least 14 Fibre Connections (to cope with current servers and uplinks plus future expansion) * At least 10 gigabit ethernet ports Currently all of the switches on our network are 3com (a mix of 4900s and 4400s). If we needed to I think we might be able to buy additional stacking units but given current developments (and likely future ones) on the site I think that a new core switch would be the better more future proof option. I was thinking about something like the 3com modular chassis below fitting with a gigabit module and a fibre module :- 3COM 3C16894-UK 3Com Switch 7754 4-Slot Chassis Bundle http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase&sku=3C16894 it's difficult to predict what options we might use in future (VOIP,PoE,80211N) but does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives to the 3com above and are there any features we should be looking for in particular? Would a modular option be the best bet or are stacks perhaps untimately more flexible? Any recommendations/advice would be appreciated? TIA

Hi all Hope we are all ok. We have recently move over to Meraki from a mixture of HP and Ruckus Switching and Wifi. We have replaced the full stack with Meraki, if any one is interested in a number of HP switches (mainly edge, some modular cores) please let me know, or if anyone can recommend a company that buys at realtivly good prices that would be great. I am aware of this thing they call eBay too ;-) Thanks Edd

I'm trying to rule out a switch problem or more a do we need to upgrade question. As far as I'm concerned the network is running fine. Wired wise I can see no issues as such. Its just the Wifi that is causing problems. But I have a guy onto that. I have attached a simple network diagram, as far as I am aware they are all 1000mb switches except the 2650 and 2626 ( is this correct? ) and these 2 switches have very little coming off them. I'm just wondering if there is anything there that will cause network issues ( wifi ) or if the core infrastructure is ok and its a AP issue. NO VLANS

Hi Guys and Girls. We are looking at upgrading our backbone and server room switches from Netgear GS724TS to something with a bit more throughput such as HP 1910-48G showing 104Gbs. Can anyone recommend this switch or another switch that would suite the bill. We would like high throughput, 48 x 1GB Copper ports and room for 4 SPF modules. We can get the 1910 for £350 and the modules for £135 so something similar price would be great but we can stretch to £1,000 for the 1 switch and 2 modules if need be. Thanks in advance for recommendations or suggestions, Thanks, Tom

Hello all, We have an aging 5308xl core switch with only 8GbE ports and 4 SFP sockets (plus 120 10/100 ports), which is severely limiting our options for connectivity to other switches. The XL modules for it are quite expensive in comparison to newer models, so I'm looking at replacing the whole thing, and may be able to claw back some money by selling the old one on. I've had a look costings for what we could replace it with, and the cost effective options that I've seen come down to a choice between: 4160GL E4208 (VL) E5406 (ZL) What I could really do with, is someone to explain what the difference is between the models, especially between 4xxx and 5xxx models, and whether any of it is important to us. I'm open to suggestions, budget is undecided but around £5-6k to provide around 70GbE and 6 SFP ports. Lastly, I ought to mention our core switch is used for routing, in case that makes any odds.

Evening guys, We've just received our 4 free GBIC modules from Netgear - part of a promotion that was running the other month. So we plugged one into our new Netgear switch - a GS724TS and connected it to the network - it didn't work. So we plugged it into our new 48 port switch - GS748TS - and it didn't work. So we tried the three others and not one of them worked. So we moved a DLink GBIC module from a DLink switch and plugged it in - ahh it worked. Has anyone got any idea what we need to do for the Netgear ones to work? At the moment they are just dead. Do the switches need to be turned off and then on with the gbic modules installed? I assumed they were hot pluggable like the DLink ones are. Any help appreciated, Gareth

Just need to see if i have diagnosed this correctly. Everything was fine before the holidays, but now we have no network. Our Ip provider says they can see into our network up to the router but they cant see to the switch. I have been in the sever room and restarted the switch a few times and nothing has worked. The switch showed that the cables are linked but on the activity setting there is no lights showing. Ther is no fault light displaying on the switch. I have swapped the cable from the router to the switch and also tried a different port on the switch. I have then logged on to to computers that are wired to that switch set them to static IP's 10.x.x.210 10.x.x.211 gave them the same subnet mask and default gateway. mask 255.255.240.0 I then tried to ping one from the other and got a request timedout?? so does this meen it is the switch? TIA

Hi, We have got one of these not being used, a cabling contractor supplied it last year, but the LEA weren;t happy and gave us a Cisco switch. It has sat turned off in our cabinet for about 10 months, thought it was about time I got rid of it. Worked fine when I turned it on this morning and connected a few machines to it. Complete with power lead and front/side brackets. Might also be on Ebay as well (will update with link). Any offers, maybe £50, plus £10 postage? ? More info: Answer
