We're replacing our supplier provided router with an L3 switch later this week, I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing, however, if anyone could give my plan the once over that'd be much appreciated We're not so much replacing it but having it reconfigured to provide an L3 point to point link with a /30 and hosting the gateway IPs ourselves to allow for the creation of VLANs 1) Create VLANs and assign addresses in the desired subnets 2) Create static routes for each subnet back to the supplier provided router 3) Create ACLs so as to restrict traffic flow between VLANs Any help is greatly appreciated

Hi, I've never done it before and need help setting up a belkin wireless router to broadband. Thanks

I've got a new Cisco 2851 with 20mb of a T3 going in one end, and two gigabit ethernet ports coming out the other. Our student net is currently plugged into one of those ports, and nothing's on the other. Soon we'll move the faculty/staff net over to the unused ethernet port. It's currently on a different router with a different pipe. Output of "show version" starts with this: Cisco IOS Software, 2800 Software (C2800NM-SPSERVICESK9-M), Version 12.4(3g), RE What I want to do is split our 20mb connection to 15/5 between the 2851's two ethernet ports. Our student net would get 15, and our faculty/staff net would get 5. I'm pretty sure I can configure the second port to get the network up, but I'm not confident with limiting the bandwidth usage. Here's my guess at the rate-limit command: config terminal interface g0/0 rate-limit input 15000000 24000 24000 conform-action transmit exceed-action drop rate-limit output 15000000 24000 24000 conform-action transmit exceed-action drop Does that sound right? Do I need to provide more info?

HELP! Trying to get on to the router (Cisco) but it does not appear to have previously been documented when initially configured. Any suggestions?

Hi all. Back to basics network advice required here. Like most schools here in NZ we have seen a huge uptake in internet usage over the last year. We currently have a single 2mb Telecom SchoolZone connection for our internet access and web filtering, and over the last few months have experienced some pretty severe bottlenecks. Senior management are concerned that when the internet connection is saturated because of use in the classroom, it is affecting the 'business' side of the school, and they have asked me for an interim solution until we move to a fibre connection (hopefully at some point towards the end of next year...) My thought is to purchase a standard business DSL package (which will obviously come with a router), stick that on the network, and use DHCP Reservations and the 'Router' option to point the office/administration PCs to that router for internet. I'm confused about DNS however. My DC, which is issuing DHCP addresses to my workstations has it's gateway set to our SchoolZOne router and all existing internet traffic goes through this. How do I configure DNS on the DC and workstations to still use the DC for it's primary DNS, then forward to the new router for unresolved queries. Does that make sense?

i have a sagem router which i got from sky, im now on virgin, the internet has been activated but the sky router won't work, how do i make it work with virgin? Virgin have told me it can be done but won't tell me how, Please help thanks.

We need to buy few switches as we are upgrading our network. The switches should be able to support BYOD, VLANs, VOIP, IP Cameras, Lync etc. So we need two for the core and 6-8 for the edge network. The switches will support 50 staff and 300 students. Can someone recommend what is best for our needs. Please ask if you need more information. Here is the main thread. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/111470-help-me-design-our-network.html

Hi, I am pulling me hair out trying to configure a separate VLAN to isolate a YouView Box from the rest of my home network and I am not having much luck. This may be a basic misunderstanding my me and I may have just create a bridge. I am using a BT Home Hub that does not support VLANS and it connects to my Cisco 220 switch where I am trying to configure VLANS. I have two ports that connect my ADSL router to the Cisco 220 Switch - they are GE10 and GE13. My idea is that the default VLAN (VLAN 1) connects to the internet via GE10 and that works fine. My Youview box connects to GE9 so I thought I would isolate the YouView box, just giving it access to the internet by creating a VLAN with GE9 and GE13 in only and excluding those from VLAN 1. But as soon as I create my VLAN the YouView box is no longer capable of connecting to the broadband router. Originally this started out as trying to solve the problem of the Youview box using multicasting and flooding my Sky Q box and causing Sky Q to stop working whenever I streamed on Youview. I have temporarily overcome that by disconnecting the GE9 and GE13 cables and connecting them via a separate Netgear switch. That stops the flooding but I can still ping the Youview box from my home network which suggests it is not isolated. A Am I missing a fundamental point about the router - do I need the router to also support VLAN ? See config attached. Any help gratefully appreciated.

We have BT fibre to school (expensive business version as we are in the sticks), BT fibre terminator, followed by their Router which passes IP address through. Inside that we have our router, non DHCP, behind that we have our switch and server 2003 doing DHCP. Our ISP is Demon and we have our main IP address plus some others that we have never used. Am in the process of changing our (Netgear) Router to a Draytek Vigor for performance and VPN reasons. If I set up the Vigor to one of the spare external IPs and sit it behind the BT Router, should I be able to test the port forwarding and VPN in parallel to the running system? Otherwise I have no downtime now to play with it. Once the Vigor is up and running it supports secondary IP, so I can use the different external IP addresses in one Router. Thanks in advance

Hi All, I’d like to know what is the best practice of editing and managing CISCO switch and router access control list (ACL)? I’m now connecting using the blue console cable into the device and then use putty to connect to the console COM1. 1. I enable logging then “show run” 2. Keeps pressing the keyboard to go ahead the “- - more- - “ delimiter 3. Open Notepad then edit the log to remove the “- - more - - “ keyword 4. Make necessary changes 5. Quickly Select 15 lines then Copy paste into the conf-t prompt (to reduce the input buffer limit and avoid timeout) 6. Make sure that there is no spacing or copy paste error in the step above then “write mem”. I wonder if there is a smarter or safest way in doing this to manage large scale network because copy pasting hundreds of line and verifying it one by one through putty and pressing the keyboard is too cumbersome. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AWT

My wife is a high school teacher in a district in which each student is issued a MacBook Air laptop. The school has wi-fi throughout, but the signal in my wife's classroom is chronically weak. IT folks for the district have been either unwilling or unable to solve the weak signal problem. There is a hardwire connection (Ethernet) in my wife's classroom and I would like to connect a wireless router to that so the students can have Internet access in the classroom. Can someone suggest a good, reliable router for this purpose? The maximum number of students in the classroom at one time is 35, and usually 20-25.

Hello everyone, I am currently trying out pfSense (as recommended on here) and think it is great - much more feature packed than others I have looked at. My question is: I have a web server sat behind the pfSense firewall, and want to be able to access from "outside". My network setup is as follows: 10.0.10.0/24 -> pfSense -> 10.208.208.0/21 -> router. The 10.208.208.0/21 is our LEA assigned range. The LEA have opened up a port so that when we type https://intranet.school.lea.sch.uk it goes through to 10.208.208.40. I would like it so that when requests for the website come through to 10.208.208.40, they are forwarded through the pfSense to 10.0.10.20 for example. Is this possible, and can it be done without having to implement NAT on the pfSense box? I have tried setting up a rule as follows: Protocol: IPv4 TCP Source: 10.208.208.40 Port: 80 (HTTP) Destination: 10.0.10.20 Port: 80 (HTTP) But can't get it to work I hope that the above makes sense to someone. Many thanks. J.Worth.

Hi all. I'm wondering if there is a 'best practice' with regards to DNS Forwarders and Root hints in general? I'll describe my situation and perhaps it'll make it clearer what I'm looking for. We have an AD domain, Server 2008 R2 native. 2 DC's handling DHCP and DNS. On those 2 DNS Servers, I have forwarders setup for our 'schoolzone' ISP's DNS servers, so obviously any DNS queries that are outside of my AD get forwarded to those DNS servers. This all works fine and as expected. Recently however, I have introduced a second DSL router onto the network, to separate the traffic from our 'admin' side of the school from the 'teaching and learning' side of things. I'm using DHCP reservations to dish out IP addresses to my admin PCs, and DHCP option 003 to specify the new DSL router as the router. I have added forwarders for the DSL's ISP to the internal DNS servers also. The result is that although internet access for the admin PCs is working, it is very slow. I think this is due to the fact that the 'SchoolZone' DNS servers are private only to traffic from within the SchoolZone network. i.e from our SchoolZone router. So what happens is: - admin PC requests DNS resolution for an internet address - Internal DNS servers cannot service the request, so they forward the request to the schoolzone DNS servers first - traffic is going out through the normal DSL router, so cannot connect to the schoolzone DNS - Attempts this twice (once for each SchoolZone DNS), fails - Finally gets to the third DNS forwarder in the list which resolves the address and the page loads So my question is should I perhaps remove the forwarders from my DNS servers and rely on root hints only? Or would this be worse? Or should I be configuring things differently? I don't currently have the option to setup VLANs etc. Hope this makes sense. Thanks
