Hi, We have setup a radius server on Windows 2008 r2 and smoothwall express 3.0 we want to use radius auth on smooth wall and so set that up. How ever when we try and go thru smoothwall it challenges us for the username and password as it is meant to do but then it keeps on challenging us time and time again and then denies access to smoothwall. It as if the user name and password are in correct, however when we set up a radius test on our ruckus controller(it has a radius test feature) it works. Is there something we are missing to do? Is smoothwall express and win2008r2 not happy together? Do we need to MOD smoothwall in another way? Thanks in advance Stuart

Not sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but hopefully someone can help or direct me elsewhere. This forum came up in my Google search and I'm amazed and a little annoyed I hadn't found it earlier. Looks like a gem of a place. Anyway, on with the question .... I volunteer at a local Community House a couple of days a week, and we have just moved to bigger premises. We had a meeting with the Department of Human Services Victoria yesterday and they now require us as part of our compliance to get some room booking software to be able to track the use of our seperate rooms. We need * Multiple rooms (currently 7) * Hourly blocks able to be booked * Colour coded for the use (why the dpt wants this I don't know, just to look pretty?) * Ability to generate a usage report that will give us the total number of hours booked per room and/or in total Department prefer web based. As it is a not for profit, there is no budget for this. So costs will need to be minimal - free even better. So far I've looked at https://www.classroombookings.com/ and have set up and tested this fine on my own domain. The not for profit does not have FTP access, so I may need to host it for them - which isn't a problem unless it starts to run into space and bandwidth. This app does not fit our needs however as it does not allow for the usage report to be generated. I've spoken with the developer on Twitter and he has suggested https://mrbs.sourceforge.io/. Which I am not familiar with and it seems a little more complicated to install. Hmm ... has anyone used this? Would they recommend it? Or would you recommend something else? The House has a WordPress website and I have been through the majority of the plugins available but none of them seem to fit our needs. Most will only allow you to book appointments, and you can't seem to book multiple appointments per day. Or they are designed for motels/bed breakfast and you can only book per night. Or they are untested and compatibility may be an issue with our version of WordPress. Can anyone make a recommendation or push me towards the right thread?

Hi I'm curently working as an ICT Techncian in a school and have recently passed my MCDST. I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what would be the best qualification to pursue next. I was thinking about the MCSE but I'm not sure if there are any other paths that could be lucrative. I do want to work my way up to being an ICT Manager but I was also thinking I may like some qualifications in programming. And maybe even some (Dare I say it) Mac/iOS qualifications. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi all, we've been using 2Simple's 2Animate for basic animation projects in Year 2 and 3. It does the job but I'm looking for something similar which is based online so that I can use it on our Chromebooks. Year 2 usually do animations of Tudor houses burning down to tie in with their Great Fire of London topic. I've had a look but what I've found so far is a bit too complicated for the little'uns! Any suggestions? Thanks very much in advance!

Hello Everyone, I am 2 weeks away from starting my new job, as a first time Network Manager at a secondary school. As excited and overwhelmed as I am when I was offered the job, I think the nerves and reality has definitely hit, and I really don't want to mess this opportunity up. I am 21 years old, and I have worked as an ICT Technician since I was 16 which I started out as an apprentice. Network Manager has always been something to aim for, I just can't believe I have got the role much earlier than I thought. I am looking for any pointers, advice, do's and don't and general experience of doing this role. I have been to look at the school, and I have a good understanding of the technology that is currently there, and its certainly an exciting project to take on board as there is a lot of work that needs doing from an IT perspective. The current IT team have been running the show for the past 5 years, just 2 technicians, as the school didn't have the budget to replace the Network Manager. This is great as they understand the building, the staff and the way the school ticks more than I do. So far, my list of things to look at when I first start are: Making sure backups are functional Updating / checking Network Documentation Reviewing contracts / services the school has Understanding the Staff with any IT issues they have This seems like such a small list to me, but I feel they are important. I understand as part of this role, I now become the person people come to when IT doesn't go to plan, and its my job to take responsibility for both my team and the issues we face, but it also should be such a good opportunity, and I am hoping to learning a lot of experience. I do apologise for the long thread, I will look forward to any replies. Best regards James

Hello, could I ask you guys for a little advice please? I've worked as a 1st line support for 5 years, but I want to get a new qualification to improve my chances of finding work as I'm currently between jobs. I'm thinking MCSA at the entry level, such as Desktop or Server qualification - I'm just a bit overwhelmed by how many website seem to offer them, and it's not cheap. So can anyone recommend a website that offers this kind of MCSA and is well-run and trustworthy? Ideally one that you or a friend has used successfully (gained the qualification.) P.S. As a side note I'm also interested in what are considered the best entry-level web design or HTML courses. There seems to be an endless parade of services offering these and the online lists of the 'best' sites are often 10-20 sites long. Can anyone recommend a good entry level qualification, and a site to do it on, which is also going to have some value to an employer. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I've been asking a few questions here recently, and about to ask another! Background is that I work with a small local IT support company and we've recently taken over a small business (5 employees). Their servers are running Server 2008 Standard (3x Servers). They have 1 domain controller with just AD, DHCP and DNS installed, the second is the "admin" server i.e home drives, sophos and printers etc go there along with terminal services (remoteapp). Last is a web host which hosts the "/tsweb" page and acts as the gateway and broker for the session connections. Currently, on their firewall they have port 443 and 3391 open which goes to the TS Gateway. The firewall is Sophos UTM and they have all networks allowed, apart from Korea, China and a few others (13 in total I think). My main concern is that this server isn't in the DMZ, however they get virtually no traffic and it only goes to the login page which required AD auth so how big of an issue is it leaving it out of the DMZ? The servers are virtual and Sophos runs inside of a VM on an HP DL380 G5. Their backups go to a NAS which is in another part of the office. I want to get this offsite eventually however works well for them currently. The AD side of things is done very well currently, with no scheduled tasks going via "Administrator" and about 25 security groups. I'm just after some general advice on how to protect the network better. They are looking to expand their main office and have some members of the public coming in whilst sitting in reception. They have UniFi for wireless and standard layer 2 switches with 2 vlans on (2 and 3) - 2 is the main network vlan and 3 is one that was going to be for the guest wireless but never configured. If you could give me some advice with going forward in regards to the overall setup that'd be great. We are going to upgrade to Server 2016 eventually however would like to get security sorted first. Anything applicable to small business security tips please post below! Thank you. Whistler

We have been using Doddle as a VLE for nearly three years and with the renewal coming up I am looking at options for the future. Generally we have been happy with Doddle but there are some pros and cons: Pros Worked well for three years pupils, staff and parents are all reasonably happy parents set up their own accounts and doddle manage them content provided all ready set up for use Cons cost no control or view of parent accounts difficult for pastoral staff to view pupils inflexible set up separate set of credentials Can anyone recommend options for VLEs? Thanks Mike

Hi all, I've been asked to sit in on interviews for a computing and ICT teacher for years 6-11 tomorrow. I can interview for an IT position, but for a teacher's position, now that's a different kettle of fish. What sort of questions should I be asking? Any advice on what to look out for or interviewing techniques for this one? Have any non-teaching IT people been asked to sit on this type of interview before, I'd be grateful for the advice? Thanks in advance

Hi Advice needed! Im wanting to deploy all my software in school via a centrally managed console on my server, at the moment i currently install all the software i need by incorporating them into my images on WDS. but this isn't flexible enough for me. also need to be able to push out any plugins updates ie flash, java etc... now my 2015 budget is about to start and i need to get costings for a good program, I'm currently looking on Google and its coming up with tons of software that will do all this from a centrally managed console, now my question is, any recommendations??? I'm running a W2K8 R2 Environment with Win 7 Pro x64 Client Domain. take into note, not all of my software are in .msi format and some are in .exe so need to be able to deploy these as well, not sure if they can be run silently either, that i will have to find out along the way Not sure if ive posted in the correct area, couldnt find anywhere in the forums main page to post this related thread, nor could i find a previous post similar to this. sorry to admins!

Hello all, Hope this is in the right section (sorry Mods if not) I am in a primary school which needs its server upgrading as the last servers MoBo through its legs in the air and died. Im temporarly using a Pentium D 2.8Ghz with 2gb RAM + 2x500Gb SATA2 which is proving to be a bit guttless when it comes to intense situations. Im looking at a budget of about £600 but that has to include CPU, MoBo, RAM, Hdd and PSU Ive been looking at CPUs and MoBo's and its a bit of a mine field out there. I was looking at a Intel Xeon X3230 S775 2.66GHz 8MB 1066FSB but then was scared off by the 'EM64T' hardware and software requirements (but i will be running a 32bit version of server2003 so im not sure if that affects anything). Another CPU ive been looking at is the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz 6MB Cache S775 1333MHZ, would be brilliant as a fileserver but it will also be the domain controler so maybe only 2cores is stretching it abit. Does anyone have any advice as to what chip and mobo to go for, any help would be much appreciated Thank you in advance P.S did I mention that this has to be ordered and payed for by the 30th of March (10 days!)

Hey all, I've been speaking to @russdev about how BrainPOP UK might work in a VLE. He suggested I might want to throw it open to the Edugeek crowd to see if anyone wanted to try BrainPOP in their VLE and tell us how they did it? You've probably never heard of us (which is fine, we're small and new). We're essentially a cross curricular animation content supplier where the content is accessed via the browser (Flash based, SSO, subscription). You can find us all over the internet so I'll leave Google to do it's job if you want to know more. I'm happy to offer cool merch freebies to any NM or VLE Manager who wants to give it a go + a free 6 month subscription to BrainPOP UK resources to the school of your choice. All we want to know is: how could/did/didn't you get BrainPOP UK working in your VLE and can you tell us that story step by step (even screenshots/capture if you're feeling particularly generous) so we can tell our users how you did it? Or any ideas you have about making that integration easier? One thing we can do is create automatic authentication URLs into specific sections/pages of the site. We could supply links to specific pages, e.g. drilling down to the Science category page, or even a specific resource. If anyone is interested we're looking for the usual suspects: Kaleidos, Sharepoint, Fronter, Moodle, Frog and so on. We want to understand it from those working in schools with VLEs every day. That's the perspective we want. We'll set you up a 30 day free trial and leave you to it. We can answer most things in this thread or by email/twitter (@brainpop_uk) if you want. If you're interested PM me or email infoatbrainpopdotcodotuk This is a genuine request - huge thanks to anyone who offers to lend a hand! Chris Chief Operating Officer, BrainPOP UK

I’ve just had 2 different companies phone me to try and sell me 'cloud' storage and SaaS facilities. I told them that I wasn’t interested because of the security etc but is it just me? I want to embrace it but just can’t see it working. Can someone please tell me that I’m right or is this the way forward? Cheers

Hi, I do the admin for a large sports school in Hong Kong. 40 different venues , 40 coaches and 20 age groups. I am looking for some software that can deal with our class timetabling. It also needs to track the hours coaches work. If it can do other stuff too, great, but if it can do timetabling and coach hours - that's my main headache. Standard school timetabling software has a number of problems in dealing with our situation. Our venues are not really like classrooms. They are like a remote building on a large campus with lots of classrooms with different age group classes running simultaneously within it. Venue is king in our world. We book slots (as per their standard time slots), and they are the most immovable part of the schedule. The coaches can be shuffled around if needed. A class of kids cant move venue either ... but they could easily move from 'room' to 'room' within a venue. Any suggestions would be really, really welcome!
