Hi all, I'm currently working as a Tech in a new-build academy - it's great place to work and I really enjoy doing it (have been for two years). Everything seemed sunny. However, someone recently asked me that classic question "Where do you see yourself in five years?" And to be honest, I couldn't answer. I don't plan on being in a school in five years, but then again, I haven't necessarily planned for anything else! So... I want to ask the people of edugeek, what sort of career opportunities (outside of education) does being a IT Tech facilitate? Do you have any examples of Techs who have gone on to weird and wacky (or relatively normal) things after leaving the school environment? Working outside of IT arena entirely? Share those pearls of Wisdom

Hello, Would you prefer to be the sole support of several Primaries or a junior tech at a secondary school? As a part of my degree I have to go on a placement. My choice is either to stay at the school I currently support and add a few feeder schools to my list or to go for a specific placement job at a secondary school. So far in my career I have always done the solitary support and so the secondary schools' job appeals because it might be nice to see things done differently and learn. On the other hand, the Primaries do have an advantage in shorter hours/flexible working time; the secondary placement is pretty much set(full time, doesn't work that well around the kids). Money doesn't come into the equation. Which would be better for the experience? Bearing in mind when I finish my degree I actually want to do the job I do now - part-time hours just to occupy the brain (and I guess to prove to myself I can do something well) - not a money-spinning career working all hours. AAAAAAHHHHHH! Which would you rather do and why?

I don't know if anyone works for an independent school here, but it's got to be worth a try. I'm feeling a bit restless and wondered what the big differences are between state and independent schools, from our perspective. Is the attitude different? What about budgets, pay and benefits, etc? Do you find technically that you do things differently at all? How about your link to the outside world, since you probably don't use a grid for learning? Anything welcome, I just can't make my mind up. Cheers.

About the job: Working in a very large state secondary school with very well behaved pupils (honestly!) you will provide general ICT technical support. We are currently looking for a technician on a temporary basis, most likely until the end of summer term 2010, although there may be the possibility of the role becoming permanent. The school has a single WS2003 AD domain with around 700 XP clients and 2000 users. Servers are mostly WS2003, with one running 2008. The move to Windows 7 on the desktops is scheduled for summer. MIS is SIMS.net with direct support from Capita. Pay may be negotiable depending on experience, but is likely to fall in line with Bolton's standard ICT Technician pay scale unless you prefer to work self-employed and bill on an hourly rate. We are looking to take someone on as soon as we can get their CRB processed. Hours: 37pw About you: Ideally good (1+ years) experience of IT support in secondary schools Familiar with AD, XP, SIMS, Office 2003 Microsoft certificates by no means an essential, but mention them if you have them 2 good references from previous employers, including your most recent/current. Next steps: Please PM me with contact details urgently to register an interest. I need the PMs ideally before midnight tonight. Apologies for the short notice, but we are working to tight deadlines.
