Hi, I'm looking for advice re connecting our main switches... To cut a moderatly long story slightly shorter, we have a Windows 2003 Domain, and we're currently running pretty much all 'dumb' d-link des-1024's switches on our site, with most being connected to one of our two core Procurve 1800-24 switches. Because of the impending installation a VOIP phone system, and replacing the wireless LAN, I will be changing most of the d-links with either Procurve or Netgear 'Smart' POE/Gigabit switches for their VLAN/QOS capabilities (also a good excuse to run gigabit to the workstations too). What I was wondering was how best to connect the switches when they are replaced: 1 - each sub switch to the core switches 2 - 'daisy-chain' one switch off the other from core switches down. I am also moving the servers from their current location (my tinitis-ridden office ) to a dedicated server room which will be linked to my office via 8-core fibre (which i will probably trunk to provide 2Gbps between the two rooms with the Procurve 1800s). Half the school is cabled back to my office and half to the new server room. Another question: Do people reckon Procurve 1800s are good for cores, and if not, any suggestions? Thanks

Hey All, A bit of a random question... I was just wondering what the Cisco Color Codes for Cat5 Sheath are? I know Data is Blue... how about POE, VOIP, UPLINK??? Cheers DK

I have been given the task of installing a bird box camera thing that one of our teachers has purchased. It is a bird box with a night vision camera that fits inside. It comes with 20m of cable and therefore needs to be within 20 metres of the projector they wish it to be connected to. I was going to just connect it up to a TV in the hall, but they want it on the projector. The hall is nearly 20 meters to the projector, so I guess I could get extention cables similar to the cables for CCTV cameras they sell in Maplin. Im thinking that the best place would be near some trees or something, but the nearest trees are at the other side of the carpark, so my only other idea is to suspend a metal cable between the building and the trees at high level, and fasten the camera cable to the metal cable, as digging a trench is not an option. Has anyone else got one of these systems and any ideas on where to place it. I am no expert on birds, so am not sure where to place the box for them to want to go in it, and i dont really want to go to all the effort of installing the thing if the birds are just going to turn their noses up at it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

got one of these for USBC diagnostics. it can do the obvious monitor the voltage and current draw in line. BUT it can read the emarker chip on a passive cable and tell you the reported specs on a given USBC powersupply. cable test, showing that it is not a 20Gigabit cable but a 10... but it is a full 20v5a (100watt) cable that is 1m long.

I am hoping to get the wisdom of the crowd on how to best network my new house? I have done a significant amount of cat 5/6 cabling in the school I work down through the years. However, there aren't going to be wires nailed to the walls of my new house as there are in some of my classrooms :-) So what approach would folk recommend, in particular routing cables to each room? Thanks, Chris

Greetings, After getting very frustrated with a tablet (a Stylistic ST5010) I've found that my problem is limited to the cable that connects the hdd to the motherboard. It's a annoyingly unlabelled piece of cable which converts the regular 2.5" HDD to something very small (16mm). I've no idea where I can find such a part but need it to fix the tablet! Any advice accepted!

Hi all, Got fibres nylon cable tied to catenaries. Every 3-4 years I have to get someone in to reattach the cable after the ties break - heat and frost I suspect. Its that time again! Was looking at using steel ties to secure them. What do you think is the best thing to use? Any products you know of? Cheers in advance

Hi All, One of the SMT has a Sony Vaio VGN-AR51M laptop... low and behold, its out of warranty. Does anyone know of where I can source spares for it? I'm after the HDD Connector board and cable. I've spoken to Sony and I'm against giving them £200 to look at the problem and 'possibly' fix it. Thanks in advance, Ross

Hey all I had a question about our classroom's projector. When plugged into multiple laptops it still flickers between the multiple colours. It shows on the whole screen not just in patches (which I've heard is a good thing; it's most likely to cable other than a broken bulb hopefully). We can move the VGA cable around when plugged in and get it back to white but have to prop it up somehow against an object to keep the white screen. If it moves even slightly it jumps back to a random colour. The cable has been replaced and it still happens. To me it seems like the pins are loose or wonky but I've checked that out. Unless we've been unlucky twice and received a dodgy cable. One is a school laptop one is my personal one, and both work fine on other projectors in other classrooms. Could it be the lead again despite already being replaced or is it likely it's something in the projector itself? The whole thing is wired up through pipes seeing as it's for classroom use so it makes it difficult to check out leads or wires to see if they're loose. Does anyone have any ideas of what it is and how to fix it? Thanks! -Rachel
