Hello, First time post so I apologize if this has already been covered by another post. Has anyone found a fix to the RM Service Host not starting automatically? We have about 500 student computers and at least half of them don't start this service automatically. I can manually start the service using a script but with how often this service stops running, I'm almost running it every other day. We are currently running RM Console CC4.3. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, BeardedTech

This post is in relation to this thread, posted by my senior feeder school tech some time ago: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/networks/41382-drive-mapping-woes.html The workstations are all clean-build XP Service Pack 3, deployed from WDS and operating in a native Windows Server 2003 domain. As with all primary schools, there is the usual plethora of wonderfully reliable software installed (even workshark!) - but none of the usual crud bloatware that comes with PCs from new such as the inevitable free PDF utility, google desktop etc.. It seems the workstation service on these machines is terminating randomly - there are no entries in the system or application logs to indicate why the service is stopping, or an application that may be tripping it up. The service just.... .....stops. A reboot will bring it all back to life, but the fix isn't permanent and machines are having to be regularly restarted - not ideal in a classroom environment when all the teacher wants is for stuff to work as it should. Does anyone have any ideas? I have a feeling it's related to SP3 itself but can't put my finger on it and a quick google turns up nothing useful. Thanks in advance! Jim

Hello... I have virtualized terminal server on HyperV. All my remote clients use USB SC reader for certificate use. Now pay attention... the Server 2012 has new feature regarding Smart Card use: "Smart card reader detection logic has been added so that the Smart Card Service runs only when appropriate. On Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, the Smart Card Service (scardsvr) automatically starts when the user connects a smart card reader and automatically stops when a user removes a smart card reader and no other smart card reader is connected to the computer. On startup, the Smart Card Service automatically starts if a reader was previously connected to the computer but a reader is not currently connected to the system. If no smart card readers are connected to the computer, the service will automatically shut down one minute after the last API call into the Smart Card Service. If a reader was never previously connected to the computer, the service will not start automatically." And here is the main part... HyperV running OS doesn't support USB SC reader detection on remote client. When I insert the card nothing happens. The SmartCard service doesn't start (Automatic setting). RDP SmartCart share is enable on client. If I start service manualy then the SmartCard is accessible. But only for the time of my login. if I logout then the service is stopped. I also test it with logon to non HyperV server... the service starts with no problem. For now I solved the issue with task net start SCardSvr on 1 minute. Please can anybody help me with this...

Hello, I have run into a problem with a vb.net program I am developing, and was wondering if anyone could help. Background: The program runs as a service, which may be the root cause of my issue. I have found a couple of ways of getting the screen resolution, which all report the same thing. WMI version Private Sub getRes() Dim objWMIService, objComputer As Object objWMIService = GetObject("Winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate,(Debug,Shutdown)}") For Each objComputer In objWMIService.InstancesOf("Win32_DisplayConfiguration") Utils.WriteToEventLog("WMIRes: " & objComputer.PelsWidth & "x" & objComputer.PelsHeight,EventLogEntryType.Information) Next End Sub Easy vb.net version private sub getRes() dim Height as Integer = my.computer.screen.bounds.height dim Width as Integer = my.computer.screen.bounds.width Utils.WriteToEventLog("Res: " & Width & "x" & Height, EventLogEntryType.Information) end Sub More comlplex vb.net version private sub getRes() for each device in my.computer.screen.allscreens height = device.bounds.height width = device.bounds.width ..... All very straight-forward. Except that it reports back 1024x768 when the real resolution is 1280x800 If I run the code in a new project with a windows form, it reports correctly. So, how can my service get the resolution of the screen of the device that it is running on?

Hello All, I have a small web server application I've written in Python that goes and gets some data from a database system and returns it to the user as XML. That part works fine - I can run the Python web server application from the command line and I can have clients connect to it and get data back. At the moment, to run the web server I have to be logged in to our server as the administrator user and I have to manually start the web server. I want to have the web server automatically start on system start as a service and run in the background. Using code from ActiveState's site and StackOverflow, I have a pretty good idea of how to go about creating a service, and I think I've got that bit sorted - I can install and start my web server as a Windows service. I can't, however, figure out how to stop the service again. My web server is created from a BaseHTTPServer: server = BaseHTTPServer.HTTPServer(('', 8081), SIMSAPIServerHandler) server.serve_forever() The serve_forever() call, naturally enough, makes the web server sit in an infinite loop and wait for HTTP connections (or a ctrl-break keypress, not useful for a service). I get the idea from the example code above that your main() function is supposed to sit in an infinite loop and only break out of it when it comes accross a "stop" condition. My main calls serve_forever(). I have a SvcStop function: def SvcStop(self): self.ReportServiceStatus(win32service.SERVICE_STOP_PENDING) exit(0) Which seems to get called when I do "python myservice stop" from the command line (I can put a debug line in there that produces output to a file) but doesn't actually exit the whole service - subsequent calls to "python myservice start" gives me an error: and subsequent calls to stop gives me: I think I need either some replacement for serve_forever (serve_until_stop_received, or whatever) or I need some way of modifying SvcStop so it stops the whole service. Here's a full listing (I've trimmed includes/comments to save space): class SIMSAPIServerHandler(BaseHTTPServer.BaseHTTPRequestHandler): def do_GET(self): try: reportTuple = self.path.partition("/") if len(reportTuple) < 3: return if reportTuple[2] == "": return os.system("C:\\Programs\\SIMSAPI\\runCommandReporter.bat " + reportTuple[2]) f = open("C:\\Programs\\SIMSAPI\\out.xml", "rb") self.send_response(200) self.send_header('Content-type', "application/xml") self.end_headers() self.wfile.write(f.read()) f.close() # The output from CommandReporter is simply dumped to out.xml, which we read, write to the user, then remove. os.unlink("C:\\Programs\\SIMSAPI\\out.xml") return except IOError: self.send_error(404,'File Not Found: %s' % self.path) class SIMSAPI(win32serviceutil.ServiceFramework): _svc_name_ = "SIMSAPI" _svc_display_name_ = "A simple web server" _svc_description_ = "Serves XML data produced by SIMS CommandReporter" def __init__(self, args): win32serviceutil.ServiceFramework.__init__(self, args) self.hWaitStop = win32event.CreateEvent(None, 0, 0, None) def SvcStop(self): self.ReportServiceStatus(win32service.SERVICE_STOP_PENDING) exit(0) def SvcDoRun(self): import servicemanager servicemanager.LogMsg(servicemanager.EVENTLOG_INFORMATION_TYPE,servicemanager.PYS_SERVICE_STARTED,(self._svc_name_, '')) self.timeout = 3000 while 1: server = BaseHTTPServer.HTTPServer(('', 8081), SIMSAPIServerHandler) server.serve_forever() def ctrlHandler(ctrlType): return True if __name__ == '__main__': win32api.SetConsoleCtrlHandler(ctrlHandler, True) win32serviceutil.HandleCommandLine(SIMSAPI) -- David Hicks

A little mis-leading, but the Unifi as a windows service is no longer supported on Windows Server, only windows desktop 10/11... You can still run it in the foreground as an app.... So every reboot, you have to login, run the app and exit BUT not sign out.... This is why I didn't post this as an enterprise software issue.. Running the software from a user account profile is awful enough but as a foreground app.. Hi, We're a school based in South Manchester with a five year old Dell PowerVault TL2000 tape backup drive that seems to be going a bit poorly - backups regularly failing to complete with "dirty tape" errors on brand new tapes even after repeated changes of cleaning tape. Was wondering if anyone can recommend a (reasonably) local firm who might be able to provide a service? Any suggestions greatly appreciated, Steve

Hi All, I'm unsure if this belongs in Educational Software, or whether it's a fault with Impero or Windows. I have noticed in the event logs on some of our laptops on site that multiple instances of the following error occurs: "Event 7031, Service Control Manager The Impero Client SVC service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service" Even though it says it has done this 1 time(s), it'll repeat itself several times during a boot. It's running in Win7 Pro. Has anyone seen this error message before and known what's causing it, or how to reduce it's occurrence? Many thanks.

Hi all, So last Monday I sorted out the ntp settings for our PDC and all was well, time syncing from the remote time source and domain clients syncing from the PDC. Friday night the PDC was restarted and once again I am receiving time sync errors. So I run: w32tm /query /source - to which I receive the error that the time service isn't running - on this PDC as well as another 2008R2 DC. /query /source on the last DC running 2008 states the time source is the LOCAL CMOS CLOCK. On the PDC I use net start w32time - no service - its disappeared. On the PDC I then use w32tm /register - registers successfully then net start w32time - error: "The service start failed since one or more services in the same process have an incompatible service SID type setting" Google suggests setting w32time to its own process using sc config w32time type= own Running this command I can then start w32time - however when I try to configure it or do anything I receive access is denied errors - even though its an admin cmd prompt. Another thread on technet says the problem is because of the tapisvr service, no idea why but it says to change the service to a network service rather than a local service. Tried this, still w32tm won't start normally and is still access denied when using own process. Tried the basics, restarting, unregister / register of w32tm, etc etc. So any ideas? suggestions? other than throwing it out of the window!

Hi All, Please help me out. I've spent 8 hours on this and hoping someone else has the same issue. A windows update was approved by my colleague last week I believe and it's broken the MSI service on my machines. I can't install anything or update anything that requires an MSI. Normal fixes found on Microsoft's website and forums don't fix the issue. I'm almost certain it's a windows update issue. I can't find out what update it is though and I'm close to jumping out the window right down to the ground. Is anyone else having the same issue anywhere? Thanks Joe

We're looking around for a system which can help us manage our Reprographics provision more effectively and efficiently. In particular the sorts of things we'd want to be able to do are as follows: The system needs to allow manual input of job tickets by the reprographics technician (in addition to end users being able to submit files electronically) as we do still get plenty of hardcopy jobs in Reprographics For jobs where the cost would be above a certain value, we’d need jobs to be approved/authorised by the Head of Department of the person that requested the job, and we’d need that cost to be displayed on the approval screen When a job is accepted and approved, an email acknowledgement needs to be sent to the person who requested the job (which may be different to the person who input the job into the system) The system then needs to put together a job schedule in a FIFO manner but with the ability for jobs to jump the queue if special authorisation is provided The job schedule should be in a daily format so that the reprographics technician can see what jobs need processing today and can update the status of each one as it is done The system would need to have some form of reporting and/or dashboard for service level agreement monitoring The system would need to be able to work with our existing Sharp reprographics copiers We do already have PaperCut MF for our regular print management, but while it does have a Job Ticketing addon available for reprographics rooms now, it doesn't seem like this would meet all the needs described above. Can anyone offer any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks, Dan Jackson (Senior ITServices Technician) Long Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, UK. EDIT: I may have posted this in the wrong forum, I couldn't see a printing specific forum so could a moderator move it to a more appropriate place? Thanks.

Hello folks, Can anyone offer some input in to this?... Our school use a Smoothwall Advanced Firewall 2008, with SmoothGuardian and SmoothTraffic. We allow pupils to access games sites (miniclip, etc) at break times and during computer club hours. However, when they are accessing these, sites they take up a quite a bit of our available bandwith. I was wondering it is possible to use SmoothTraffic to reduce bandwidth for specific sites, in effect making them slower / less of a bandwidth priority during these selected times? Thanks!
