This post is in relation to this thread, posted by my senior feeder school tech some time ago: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/networks/41382-drive-mapping-woes.html The workstations are all clean-build XP Service Pack 3, deployed from WDS and operating in a native Windows Server 2003 domain. As with all primary schools, there is the usual plethora of wonderfully reliable software installed (even workshark!) - but none of the usual crud bloatware that comes with PCs from new such as the inevitable free PDF utility, google desktop etc.. It seems the workstation service on these machines is terminating randomly - there are no entries in the system or application logs to indicate why the service is stopping, or an application that may be tripping it up. The service just.... .....stops. A reboot will bring it all back to life, but the fix isn't permanent and machines are having to be regularly restarted - not ideal in a classroom environment when all the teacher wants is for stuff to work as it should. Does anyone have any ideas? I have a feeling it's related to SP3 itself but can't put my finger on it and a quick google turns up nothing useful. Thanks in advance! Jim

Question: What would be the best way to deny printing to a particular printer, from a particular workstation and username. E.g. Deny user 'Jon' to print from workstation 'PC-01' to printer 'Printer-01' Could this be done via a GPO, security settings via the security tab on printer in question, or by a script? We are a college and also use the print management software PaperCut NG. We essentially have workstations in an open access area with printing facilities, but wish to deny a particular user to print from those workstations to the open access printer. However, I wish for this user to print from the classroom workstations to the open access printer. Unfortunately, moving workstations or creating another user account is not an option. Any help is greatly appreciated. Richard.

I have been asked to enable mouse trail for an SEN pupil, I cannot see how this can be done easily. THe pupil uses different computers/laptops I cannot see how I could do this from GPO/RMMC Any advice/help please. RM CC4.3 network and windows 7 32 bit Workstations Stuart

Hi Guys, I am running a CC3 Network, I have created a standard RM Standard Disk, got it on the floppy and then booted to floppy, So, I choose to rebuild the entire station, enter in the station details, then it says: Found network card: Intel pro/100 ve network adapter Testing the network connection.... File not found: a:\lmhosts Initializing TCP/IP via DHCP...... Microsoft DOS TCP/IP 1.0a NET0132: Unable to find file: C:\Net\lmhosts Connection Failed. Press any key to reboot the machine and try again As anyone else had this problem or know how to fix this, I am very greatful, Thanks, James

Help and Advice needed please, I have just started a new technician job at a school that shall remain nameless for now, but I have inherited 2 problems that I hope someone can offer advice. Problem one: The schools wireless has been setup without any security at all, it is currently open to anyone who wants to connect. As soon as I had found this out I noticed that there are quite a few students bringing in their own devices and using them on the network. With no one checking for any virus or spyware etc. Fortunately to get out on the internet they have to supply their school username and password, so I'm hoping this is secure enough to prevent anyone from outside school actually sending illegal content or downloading inappropriate content, am I right in thinking this way. Also the schools antivirus seems to be preventing anything from attacking the schools computers but for how long. Problem 2: Some of the computers, laptops and even the switches are so old that they're not fit for purpose. The problem being though that the school bursar has had full control of the ICT equipment for such a long time that he is reluctant to let me take it over and he certainly doesn't like to spend any money on new equipment. It is painful watching the pupils and teachers struggling to use the equipment, so has anyone got any advice on how you would tackle this situation. Any advice on either or both of the problems would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hello Everyone, Thought I would let you know, after a Grewaling Past 2 Days that we have detected this Virus on our servers (Troj/DwnLdr-HKW) it killed the SVCHost.exe, which then killed off several services including, Automatic Updates, Server, Workstation, Computer Browser and the Event Logger Services. As you can imagine this caused no end of problems, and SOPHOS only identified the Virus at 4am(ish). Please be aware, as it creates random services which run C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs but when you look in the Registry, they are using random DLL's, which you then need to disable then stop the service, then delete the DLL's and Registry Settings. Hope this helps, Gaz
