Afternoon, I'm hoping someone will be able give me a hand at working out what backupexec license I'll need in a virtualised environment (Hyper-V). Our setup after the summer will be: 4x Virtual Server Hosts (Running 2008R2 Core - with the Hyper-V role) 3x Physical Servers - Forest Root / SIMS&SQL / Exchange Each of the Virtual Servers will host 3/4 VMs Our backup routine is and is based on BackupExec 2010 (v12.5) but there is money available to upgrade to 2012: Monday - Thursday - Deferential Backups Friday - Full Backup (then taken offsite) At the moment I have the following BackupExec Licenses: 1x Media Server License 1x Advanced Disk-Based Backup Option 8x Windows Remote Agents Would I need to purchase 4 copies of the Hyper-V agent or could i just install the existing server agents on to the virtual servers (not the hosts)?? The idea is to keep the exisitng backup schedule if possible. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Cheers Mark @ Kingsmead

Hi all, Just wondered if anyone has come across this issue before? We currently use Exec 2012 to backup our servers and we seem to be having an issue when incremental/differential backups are taken. (Physical Server backups are working perfect) We have a virtual machine and when the full backup is taken its backs up everything like it should however when it does an incremental/differential backup (Tried both) it seems to have the same file size as the full backup. I have checked the physical machine which holds the virtual machines and it has the agent for windows installed. Myself and my college can't seem to figure out how to solve it... Any help apprenticed.

Will make a nice gift for xmas. ftp://ftp.entsupport.symantec.com/pub/support/products/Backup_Exec_System_Recovery_Server_Edition/354933.pdf There's an awful lot of errors they much be proud of themselves! although, not an awful lot of fixes! ~_~ which does not suprise me to be honest Yay!

I've been getting this error in my backup logs lately and the knowledgebase at Symantec isn't much help (the 2 solutions don't seem to help). Backup- \\app1.sch4290.somerset.gov.uk\Shadow?Copy?Components - VSS Writer File SystemV-79-57344-65247 - A failure occurred reading an object. Directory User?Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders\testbase32\ was not found, or could not be accessed. None of the files or subdirectories contained within will be backed up. Any ideas how to fix it?

Hi, We have upgraded our domain controllers from windows server 2008r2 to windows server 2012r2. Since upgrading we have been unable to take full backups of these servers. It does backup data and i can restore data however the backups fail. I receive this error: Has anyone seen this before. Backup- \\DC1-SERVER.xxxxx-School.local\System?State V-79-57344-33928 - Access Denied. Cannot backup directory and its subdirectories.

After posting on a Symantec forum for help with Backup exec, I changed our backups from full(friday night-over weekend), differentials every weekday (using archive bit), to using the USN journal, modified time. It's still not backing up successfully and the differentials look as if they are trying to do a full backup! The Full backup has a a few errors I'm trying to resolve(missing files, snapshots etc), but > 99% is backed up(2.7 T byte). the original post on the Symantec connect forum :- << Hi, A little stage setting first:- we have Backup exec 2010 R3, running on our backup server (MS Windows server 2008 32bit, 2 intel 3.06Ghz Xeon processors, 2G ram), Full backups transfer rate varies between typically 450-1,800MB/min, to a ESATA connected WD My Book Essential (wdbacw0030hbk-01 3TByte drive). Unfortunately due to the length of time backups take(full backup off all our servers takes all weekend!), we've elected to do differential backups every weekday overnight. The BIG problem is the differential backup of our main fileserver is very slow 20-50MB/min. I've had a look at the backup logs and one obvious issue seems to be the very large numbers of folders its backing up, for example:- Byte count : 12,697,968,916 bytesRate : 31.00 MB/Min Files : 116,528 Directories : 1,326,746 Skipped files : 0 Corrupt files : 0 Files in use : 0 Q.How come the directory count is way higher than the file count? Any insight into the issue would be great, Thank you! >>End of Symantec posting. At first I thought Sophos anti-virus scheduled AV scans were changing the USN journal modified time so after reading a Sophos article ( search for 43898 USN Change Journal And Sophos), I changed a few registry values and though I might be in with a chance. No such luck, Mondays differential is still taking till Wednesday to complete! Has anyone come across similar issues? and know of any workarounds? Many thanks for any input! MrRubbs.

Hi I've recently started at a new school and the backup system which is currently in place (well, I reinstated since there wasn't one) has been outgrown I feel. (Having to start backing up on a Thursday to try and get the last tape in before I finish on Friday doesn't really seem ideal to me) So what I thought of doing was putting together a proposal for a D2D2T system and wondered what your thoughts on what I had planned were? Server HP ProLiant ML110 G5 - Dual-Core Xeon 3065 2.33 GHz, 250GB SATA storage, 1GB RAM @ £399 HP Midline - Hard drive - 250 GB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm x3 @ £82.99 each Windows Server 2008 Licence - Schools @ £56.80 Tape Library Quantum Superloader 3 Tape Autoloader - LTO Ultrium @ £1521.99 LTO Ultrium Cleaning Cartridge @ £39.99 Sony LTO Ultrium 2 Media x 10 @ £21.99 each Backup Exec Backup Exec 12.5 with CPS for Windows Servers Licence @ £372 Backup Exec 12.5 Media @ £36 Backup Exec Windows Systems Agent x 3@ £223 each Estimated Cost: £3344 Now, at the moment the system would need to backup 260GB on a full backup, however we will be getting a new SIMS server in shortly and potentially replacing one of the other servers over the next year, so I expect that to increase, however the question is does this go over the top. I'm not the budget holder and when asked roughly how much I could put towards this no figure has been mentioned so have just put down roughly what I found off various websites. Any ideas what could be changed to potentially lower cost (as I'll probably be asked to)? Cheers

We are planning to replace our current backup system(s) with something more suitable. At the moment we use a combination of BExec 9 (dates back to 2003), Windows 2003 backup, Windows 2008 backup, robocopy and a script. For media we use 1TB and 320GB USB HDDs. Most of our backups are differentials (full at weekend) and we have 5 Friday drives. Backup USB HDDs are transferred each day to a fire proof safe located at a different site. But can sometimes cause problems, especially during holiday periods. We have 4 sites and the connections between these sites have recently been upgraded to 100Mbit (from 2Mbit). The opens the potential for backing up over these links to NAS. But I my knowledge of backing up to NAS is very limited. I have looked at a QNAP unit which has 6 SATA bays (up to 6TB). One option is to use two of these, where 3 sites backup to a NAS at the 4th site, and the 4th site (where most of the data is located) backup up to a second NAS at one of the other 3 sites. My main concerns are: Whether we have sufficient bandwidth to backup the data over the links. The whole concept of backing up to online storage. Potential for hacker to delete the backups (although we could do regular transfers to USB HDDs for archive). How is this viewed or addressed? What is accepted practice. The most appropriate backup software (looking at Microsoft DPM 2010), but feedback I have seen suggests it is far from perfect and can be difficult to setup. I would prefere BExec 12, but we have 34 servers (although around 7 are due to be decommisioned soon), but that still leaves 27, and at £300 agent lisence per year, it would be very costly. Any advice from anyone in the educational sector (or otherwise), would be much appreciated. Many Thanks, Bruce. Leeds, UK.

I've have two B2D devices in a device pool, and set my backups to use that device pool. My weekly full backup at the weekend failed when the first device became full. I thought that the main benefit of using a device pool was that when one device became full, the job would switch to the next. I've just manually restarted the job, and it's started using the second device, the one with free space. I've tried Cascaided Drive Pools, which would appear to do exactly what I want, except that it's for tapes drives only, not B2D folders. Have I missed something? Is there a way of getting jobs to auto switch devices as they become full? Thanks.
