Hi all, I'm looking at a new Cloud to Cloud backup as our existing option has doubled in price, from what I've seen Redstor and Barracuda are the two big ones. What do you all use and which would you recommend? Thanks

I have a weird one for you all. Using an LTO drive on a remote agent machine. Installed media, ran inventory, found it was a used tape from other software so marked it as free. When that had finished I went into the properties of the tape to label it and also move it into a Media Pool. I have a backup job that takes mirrored data and creates a full backup to the tape, the issue is when the job starts on its schedule it hangs, create a brand new tape with a new id and sits in an unidentified media pool hanging the backup. If I then move that newly created tape into the selected media pool the job then continues. Why would it create brand new media when I have already ran an inventory, it has identified the tape and I have set it to the correct media pool. Any ideas on how to fix this??

Hi all, Just wondered if anyone has come across this issue before? We currently use Exec 2012 to backup our servers and we seem to be having an issue when incremental/differential backups are taken. (Physical Server backups are working perfect) We have a virtual machine and when the full backup is taken its backs up everything like it should however when it does an incremental/differential backup (Tried both) it seems to have the same file size as the full backup. I have checked the physical machine which holds the virtual machines and it has the agent for windows installed. Myself and my college can't seem to figure out how to solve it... Any help apprenticed.

Hi All, I am looking at virtualising our physical servers here over the summer and am interested to find out what others have in place. I have provisionally specced the following 2 x VM host 2 x SAN switch 1 x SAN 1 x tertiary backup server - to hold 14 full backups - circa 1 per server and 13 incrementals per server (using VEEAM) 1 x NAS for longer term backups using VEEAM Is this on par with what others have inplace or am I under speccing things.? Cheers Andy

Hi, We am after some advise on how others do backup's both onsite and offsite and how we should do ours. We have two sites in the trust. Current Solution: Site 1: Onsite - Vmware Data protection this is stored on a freenas box that is mounted to the hosts and is located at the other side of the school. The freenas server will be around 6 years old now, so it getting on. Offsite backup - Provided by a UK company, we pay 4.2k per year of 5TB of storage. This only backups file shares. Site 2: Onsite - Vmware Data protection this is stored on an old RM nas box that is mounted to the hosts which I am not sure how old it is as it was bough before we supported this site. Offsite backup - Provided by a UK company, we pay 1.1k per year of 500gb of storage. This only backups file shares and sims. What we would like: We like vmware data protection as it works fine for us and does not cost us anything extra as it comes part of our vmware licence. The offsite backup is currently costing us around 5.3k a year for both sites and with a shrinking budget we would like to get rid of this, current contract is up next month. We have thought about getting two new nas boxes such as a synology nas and having vmware data protection appliances replicate to each other so we would have site 1's onsite backups replicated to site 2 and the other way. Questions: Has anyone on here done a vmware data protection site to site replication? Would you replace vmware data protection with somthing like veeam? Can it do site to site replication? Or would you do it a diffrent way. We would just like to not have to pay 5.3k every year. Any help would be much appreciated.

(FROM SCHOOL PORTAL: 20/01/2011) Network at Risk Notification For Network Manager/Head teacher information: The CLEO network will be considered at risk on the following dates:- Thursday 20th January at 10pm for up to 2 hours. Between 5.00pm on Friday 21st January and 5.00pm on Sunday 23rd January. CLEO services will remain functional, however the network is considered at risk as there will be no resilient services whilst the backup servers are relocated during this period.

Hi all. We are using symantec backup exec 12.5 to backup server files. However it is missing out a lot of files relating to exchange. I've attached part of the log file to this post. Could someone let us know if they require backup or if they are just log files to ease or concern. We are running windows server 2003 R2. Cheers. servers full wednesday exceptions edit.txt

We are planning to replace our current backup system(s) with something more suitable. At the moment we use a combination of BExec 9 (dates back to 2003), Windows 2003 backup, Windows 2008 backup, robocopy and a script. For media we use 1TB and 320GB USB HDDs. Most of our backups are differentials (full at weekend) and we have 5 Friday drives. Backup USB HDDs are transferred each day to a fire proof safe located at a different site. But can sometimes cause problems, especially during holiday periods. We have 4 sites and the connections between these sites have recently been upgraded to 100Mbit (from 2Mbit). The opens the potential for backing up over these links to NAS. But I my knowledge of backing up to NAS is very limited. I have looked at a QNAP unit which has 6 SATA bays (up to 6TB). One option is to use two of these, where 3 sites backup to a NAS at the 4th site, and the 4th site (where most of the data is located) backup up to a second NAS at one of the other 3 sites. My main concerns are: Whether we have sufficient bandwidth to backup the data over the links. The whole concept of backing up to online storage. Potential for hacker to delete the backups (although we could do regular transfers to USB HDDs for archive). How is this viewed or addressed? What is accepted practice. The most appropriate backup software (looking at Microsoft DPM 2010), but feedback I have seen suggests it is far from perfect and can be difficult to setup. I would prefere BExec 12, but we have 34 servers (although around 7 are due to be decommisioned soon), but that still leaves 27, and at £300 agent lisence per year, it would be very costly. Any advice from anyone in the educational sector (or otherwise), would be much appreciated. Many Thanks, Bruce. Leeds, UK.

We are looking to change Backup providers and I was wondering where people would be willing to share who they use, How much space they are given as well as how much they pay so I have a few options. Thank you in advance!
